Noelle Kristen Beaudin (Hurdy Gurdy)
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 ต.ค. 2013
Consider subscribing to this channel if you dig what you see. All of the hurdy-gurdy pieces on this channel are tunes written by me. Sure, they're weird, but so am I. Yes, I am a beginner hurdy-gurdy player, but at least I'm not slapping my videos up on some Facebook group so that everyone has to suffer. If you like any of my tunes, you can email me and I'll give you a link to the sheet music. Maybe one day years from now I'll be really good, and then see you'll be like, well that was nice seeing her grow into such a good player. Because it's nice to wish nice things on people.
Tangled (Hurdy-Gurdy Duet)
Well, here is one of the first tunes I wrote on the Marco Gamarra Tenor, and not the one I have now (Isla has my original one). But since Death by Gurdy is working on album thingies, I decided to write a second part to this tune so that Max could play it with me on both of our tenors. Thinking back, when I wrote this tune I was so sad...super sad....so much bad stuff was going on, but now it's all changed and I'm no longer 'Tangled'. Woooooo!

With added bonus: modes! Yo, yo everyone! The fourth (count 'em, 4 baby!) video in the How to Play Hurdy-Gurdy for Beginners series is out! Wooooo! In this video we teach you about scales, modes, triads and inversions - the building blocks of all musical compositions - so if you know how to play these, th...
Billy Goats Gruff (Hurdy Gurdy tune) on the NG Petite Linotte
มุมมอง 55821 วันที่ผ่านมา
Hey everyone! This is the second little tune I've written on the Petite Linotte for my little students. One of them is a huge fan of the Three Billy Goats Gruff story, so this is a tune based on that story. In the middle, you'll hear the battle and the Troll getting knocked off the bridge. This little hurdy-gurdy is great for restarting coups! Thank you Jaap at Nerdy Gurdy for making such a gre...

Child's Play (Hurdy Gurdy tune) on the NG Petite Linotte
มุมมอง 673หลายเดือนก่อน
Yeah, so this is on the tiny little baby gurdy - the Petite Linotte - from Nerdy Gurdy. It's a HG made for children and I'm testing it with all my little ones, but you know what? This little instrument is fricking killer! I'm just gonna use it myself as it's super easy to transport and a nice fun gurdy to have. This was the first tune of 3 that I've composed on this instrument for my little one...
Come, Follow (Hurdy Gurdy round)

OK, this is the smallest hurdy gurdy and the largest and an Eaton in between. I am playing on Jaap's new Nerdy Gurdy for children - the Petit Linotte Max is playing on his Eaton. Steve is playing on his Nogaj, Lira Cello - a beast of an instrument! Together we're making a hurdy gurdy orchestra of this traditional round, whilst I sing the words to Come, Follow. This was a great deal of fun. But ...

Black Bunny (Duet version) - Hurdy-Gurdy tune

Hey everyone! You're probably sick of duets, but man are we having some fun! I decided to take my original solo tune - Black Bunny - and make it into a duet so me and Max could play it - and we could play it on the 'Nip and the Tenor to see how those instruments sound together. Hope you all enjoy it! Music for this duet is on www.gurdyworld.com/ Noelle Beaudin: Catnip-b by Radoslaw Malisz Max E...

Well here you go folks. This is a whole bunch of stuff to unpack. If you've studied some whacky bit o' history then you'll know what this title refers to, but also it's sort of a play on words, since my best friend, Roy, is also a bit of a super historian. But really, the piece is about the conversation between the two instruments, the darkness and the light, the rhythm of the chant, the Tudori...

I like that! I like the slow almost chromatic (?) runs! But now you’ve put the cat amongst the pigeons too! Its almost time for Marco to start the build on my gurdy and I ordered an Alto but hearing the tenor has made me wonder if that’s more what I want! Can you comment on Alto vs Tenor at all?
Two of my students have Gamarra Altos and I think that you would do well to stick with that order. I think the Tenor is a great instrument, but I think when you are starting out on HG it's good to start on an Alto to get used to how the instrument works first, and then yes moving to a Tenor (in addition to your Alto) is a great idea. His Altos are fantastic, but I'd also think about making sure you just get 2 melody strings and not 3 as that complicates things by 10000% 🙂
@@noelle-beaudin Great! It's so kind of you to help! Thank you very, very much 😘 I can't wait for my gurdy to be ready!
subscribe for ed!!!
Soulful.
The real question is where does the plumbus fit into all of this.
Amazing job you two!! Love it! :D
Thank you, Rochelle!
this is only the 4th hurdy gurdy video i’ve seen, but the tone on your instrument is the clearest and smoothest, most pleasing to the ear!
Thank you! The KNYS Instruments Catnip B and P are two of the best beginner models you can get for the money and it sounds amazing. The tenor model in this video is from Marco Gamarra and that is also great, but much more expensive.
@@noelle-beaudinit shows. sounds beautiful! i look forward to hearing more
Most excellent. Thank you !
Thanks!
Dunno why, but this put me in mind of The Cure and Mogwai.
I'm channeling the 90's post-rock vibe....
For some reason Tangled's tune sounds to me as if it could be a background tune to a nursery rhyme recitation (?!)
Sounds like a plan - find one and let's do it!
So melodic
Nice tune!
Thanks!
This is an awesome video. Now all I need is a hurdy-gurdy.
Hmm... I watched part 4 first, then came to this one because most of the way through that I was wondering what notes you have on the keyboard. Where is that covered? Although I watched you play a scale, I couldn't see which keys you were playing. Is it fully chromatic? Are the black parts also keys?
Sure. If you go back and watch the first 3 videos in the series, the keys, note names and placement are all covered specifically. Yes, the HG is chromatic, although there are some diatonic HGs out there, this video series covers the G/C chromatic HG specifically.
@@noelle-beaudin Okay. Thanks. I've watched 1 and 4, so far. This is what I find frustrating about video learning vs something written where I can try to skip through to find what I want to know, then go back. I find it hard to sit through something like this hoping it will get to the point I wanted to know about.
@@TooSlowTube I know, it is a pain. It sounds like you need Part II the most - and in the liner notes of the video there are markers for the places you can skip ahead to. If you need specific help, just book a time with me on deathbygurdy.com and I can help you out 🙂
@@noelle-beaudin Thanks. The last two thirds of part three were more what I was looking for. The black keys are hard to see in a video, so I wasn't clear if there were notes on black keys between the ones you were playing - and initially I thought only the white keys were keys, then switched to thinking only the black ones were. Might I suggest a labelled close up diagram of the keyboard, on your website? As someone who's never actually seen a hurdy gurdy, other than on TH-cam, that's the part that was least clear, to me.
Mouche in french means fly 🪰 A fly string ? And the string mount/rest is a chien .....dog in french
That's correct, but in that "fly" is a small sound, and the "chien" is the little wooden bit that rests on the soundboard and makes that loud "buzzing" sound when you want to engage it.
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing. Well played
I was just going to re-record this tune on the new Catnip P thanks for reminding me!!!
Thank you for the very interesting video, once again. I hope you will go on sharing tutorials on how to play this wonderful (yet demanding) instrument!
You are welcome!
Great! I enjoy your videos. I specially love to see the way your fingers move on the keyboard when you play a tune. Thanks for the scales book, I hope it will help me to develop the skills to get some tune on my gurdy someday!
You will, just keep practicing!
Thanks.
No, thank you! ;-)
Muito bom!
You are amazing! Thank you for your practical, no-nonsense tips.
Loved this! so excited to go through all of these.
Thank you! The next one is coming out soon!
Wow you explain it so good, so boldly, so clever, i don't understand nothing,..like we all know that much stuff like you do,..or we supose to read your mind,...ok...thats a trumpet,..and what is a trumpet,.?..i know that a trumpet is a blowing instrument,..not that little thing that you show,...
Yeah well it was only supposed to be a short for folks with previous gurdy knoweldge, not the whole explanation of parts. If you want to understand what a trompette is (not a trumpet which is different, and yeah it blows) you would be best to get familiar with the entire instrument via gurdyworld.com. In the FAQs section you can read about each part and then this would explain it for you better if that is what you are looking for.
Tous les 2 très mignons: la mélodie et la musicienne, Lucky Max.
Awwww, merci!
Wow perfect! So crisp. Those stops/ pauses were amazing- imagine the e medieval dancers waiting to jump into the rhythm again
Thanks! When I play the tune for my little kids, they crack up at the stopping part, and some wait in anticipation....!
Beautiful instrument and playing!
Thank you!

This video has the exact information I needed. This style of tutoring is what I need to get progressing with the gurdy. Thank you so much! I admit I snapped a melody string last year... got new ones
You are welcome!
Thank you. Now if would please tell us how a plumbus is made.
What is the name of the french instrument that works like a hurdy gurdy, but is a long rectangle?
Do you mean the Symphonia?
@noelle-beaudin I googled it, and yes that is the instrument. I've seen it once before but never knew the name. Thank you.
@@datsunlambchops4624 my pleasure!
Is this a 13 string??
No just six. 1 trompette, 1 mouche, 2 melody strings, 2 drones.
c'est superbe
Merci!
You invented a hurdy gurdy with no frills
Hola! Me encantan vuestras zanfonas, suenan de maravilla 😊 Os quería preguntar quien os las hizo y que modelo son, hace tiempo que me gustaría comprarme una. Me encantan vuestros vidios!
Hola! Tenor HGs = Marco Gamarra; Catnip B - Radosław Malisz (KNYS Instruments); Eaton Luteback - Chris Eaton; Petite Linotte - Jaap Brand (Nerdy Gurdy) 🙂
Wonderful that sound of ancient music!
@@josecarlosdeprada309 thank you!
I understand. I will (learning sufficient proficiency obviously 😂) be using it both traditionally but also potentially in a similar way to Stephan from the band Faun. Initially I thought it would be fine with everything micced up but then I thought it might be a good idea to separate the drones from the melody strings. Then splitting down even further makes sense because the expense of doing so is not that much more. May I ask please… and thank you for being kind enough to reply to my questions, it is greatly appreciated 🙏 So… does the gurdy you have with the preamp fitted have knobs or sliders, switches etc set into the woodwork or is it simply an internal amp outputting to a multiway socket requiring volume, tone etc to be adjusted externally? I’ve seen some gurdys with little sliders set into the side of the body at the back.
Then I think you are on the right track for sure. The blue box is the way to go as far as that is concerned!
@@noelle-beaudin thank you
@@martinjf467 anytime!!!
Thank you very much. Yes, I’ve already gone for 2-2-2 PLUS sympathetics. Also capos. But there’s a question mark about what to do about pickups. I think we are going for the option with multiple pickups and an off board mixer.
Yep, the "little blue box", I have that on my tenor. It's OK, but it adds weight and expense, and in retrospect I would not have added it had I known.
Interesting. Is that because you play mostly acoustically rather than via an amplifier with the use of effects?
@@martinjf467 No, I play both ways, but I don't see the value in the expense of it for what I'm doing. I could see the value of it if you wanted to isolate each mic and channel out to effects, etc. in the recording studio, but playing live with an amp it is not worth it for me.
Very good. I had reservations about Nerdys after someone else's video but tat looks playable.
Thanks! Yes, I can tell you that Nerdys are very playable, but obviously this depends on which model you are thinking about getting. In this case, this pre-built model is very well made, plays well (needed just some tweaking), shipped quickly and safely to me, has great support from Jaap (NG founder).
Thank you for your feedback ❤ I’m currently on the cusp of Marco beginning my gurdy I think so I’m due to finalise the spec now. I’m rather nervous of missing something important!!!
If it's an Alto: 2 / 2 /2 with sympathetics and capos should suit anyone just fine. If you need help or advice you can always contact me and I'm happy to help you! 🙂
Just wonderful as usual
