Canoe Camping with Beginners, Algonquin Park Backcountry
Fall 2023; mid September, as the leaves were just starting to change, over a year in the making, we were finally able to take James' mom and partner out on their first backcountry canoe camping trip. James helped Rosanna and Steve plan all the gear that they needed to outfit themselves, they collected gear all summer long in preparation. Unfortunately two weeks before the initially planned fall trip, Rosanna, broke her ankle! The excitement resumed next fall, the fall of 2023. Here we go:
We entered through Magnetawan, night 1 Daisy Lake, night 2 Misty, night 3 Little Trout Lake
They completed their first portages, set up their new tent for the first time (disclaimer: it is recommended to try before your trip!) pulled over beaver dam after beaver dam, were rained on, got lost in the forest, ate fresh caught trout cooked over the fire.. had the true Canadian wilderness experience.
Emma, friend porcupine and new doughnut floatie that does not float very well, are also featured in this short comedy - ahem, I mean canoe camping film.
Alternative title suggested by Rosanna and Steve: Camping with Seniors
Let us know if we should edit the title in the comments 😂
Thanks for coming on the adventure with us!

      James does use one now, he wasn’t doing a lot of fishing the first few years we had Emma because she was VERY difficult to canoe train.. and then to keep calm when fishing.. and James is an ultralight minimalist lol but she’s pretty good now so he’s fishing a lot more.

    Great video! I watch it a couple times a month when I need to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life! Two questions for you, if you don’t mind. What dates was this trip? I live in Oklahoma and I’m planning a fall trip and want to go peek foliage as you two did. What entry and route was this? After having seen the camping spot so many times in your video, I want to experience it for myself. My wife and I are heading to BWCA next month, can’t wait for the peaceful nothing all around. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos to share for us. Greatly appreciated. Safe travels and happy adventures friends!

    • @TwoPacksandaPup
      @TwoPacksandaPup 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Awe thanks Jeff! Honestly, we love sharing our trips for this reason, the videos can bring some peace and comfort when you can’t get out into nature. Tide you over until you can get out, or remind us of past experiences. This was Oct 2nd-5th but every year is different for peak colour. Weather sparks the start of fall colour changes and it shifts every year. This makes catching peak colour difficult because the best way to time it is to have flexibility, watch the weather and book last minute. Of course in Algonquin you have to book your lake and dates etc so we often leave things to the last minute and see what’s free, or just pick dates without regard for how the colours will be. Please dm me on Instagram.

    Just discovered via my sister. Love the trips, love Emma but the modern equip is fantastic. The Canoe I carried in the 60s was 70-80 lbs not counting the food pack. Have some suggestions for you if you don’t mind. Islands are ideal as the wind helps keep bugs & bears at bay, but you do need to get firewood on shore. You're strong enough to keep the paddle away from the gunnel so you won’t hurt your hands and could get more power by sliding you're lower hand down toward blade. But you guys are great if you want to ignore.

      She’s lucky enough that she swims almost everyday - without a life vest.. but when we’re on a trip, we all wear one. Period. We’re on the water for 6+ hours a day, often in new places, there’s no harm in safety and setting an example for others. Luckily it doesn’t cause her any discomfort 😊♥️ she swims at camp without one of course.
