Practice practice practice!! I need serious welding help with my el camino quarter.
How cool would it be if you guys could shoot me some welding advice in the comments 😍🥹 Just a girl trying to build some hotrods all by her lonesome. A quick recap on life then some practice welds. I am not proud, but I am honest! I need some help and advice on this whole mig welding thing! 😂😅 Always trying my best and always willing to learn anything that will help me build my chevys. Tackling both an El camino and a Nova! All knowledge is welcome!

I’d call that colour scheme “Colorado Cammo” 😂
Too much voltage
If you’re doing sheet metal, just tack and stagger. Solid welding is done on structural steel. If you do that on sheet metal it’ll just warp. Tack a spot then move an inch and do it again, then keep staggering until it’s done. Allow it to cool
Get rid of those sheets!! You’re gonna burn your house down!! 3m makes a paper to protect your glass from welding and grinding. And a welding blanket would help too. That’s just asking for trouble!!

Kirstie, I buzzed through the video. I'm going to type until my fingers tell me to stop. There are various levels of learning. One is frustration. That is easy to achieve and hard to get past. 1st item. Most of what you will do on the long areas of the panel is butt welds. Quit trying to do this on the floor. get a table to place your work on and get comfortable so you can control the gun and feel what it is telling you. I would get some strips of 1/8" metal and practice stich and then filling in on a butt seam. The mig gun is what many start with and it's a terrible way to learn. Many learn to make a nice bead with no penetration. You will be able to look on the back sides of your practice part and see if it shows heat. Then bend it back and forth and see what it takes to bend it. When you think you have the 1/8 down well, move to 16 gauge. repeat until you can do it laying down and then with the part vertical but you horizontal welding. When you get that mastered, move on to 20 or 22 gauge. I believe your quarters are 22 gauge. I think it's counter productive to try and learn on thin metal because of the difficulty of it. Your welder may have come with a chart that shows amperage and wire speed for metal thickness. If not, I would check Primeweld or Eastwood's website for info. Be very careful about burning your eyes or your clothing. There is a reason that many use a leather welding sleeve. Getting comfortable with the gun is primary to you having a chance to become successful. Welding very thin metal is an acquired art. If you pick it up in short order, you are very fortunate. When things don't go well, walk away and get a fresh start to avoid that frustration I mentioned. AND, if this doesn't go well enough, find someone who does it everyday to weld the visible seams on the panels. The bottoms that are hidden aren't subject to warpage like the big seam at the top. Your young and it might be easy to exceed your patience level versus the time you have allotted for this. Don't expect to have the results of someone who has decades of doing this. Don't be afraid to call in the calvary in times of war. :) That's a gross overview with entirely too much info left out. Best wishes and if you don't have another vid up before Christmas, Happy Holidays to you and the kids. :)
Lots of good welding tips in the comments. Plus I'm sure Brent and the guys in the shop will definitely lend you a hand. You are going to be a great welder in no time. Keep up the great work!
I have found when welding thin metals cycling the switch on the trigger more stops the burn holes from happening and also if you look at the inside of the spool lid there should be a graft for settings according to metal thickness
Clean the metal and dont use brake clean to do it. Movement speed and puddle control are crucial. Watching soneones insteuctional weld video is the easiest way to see how they control the puddle.
I think I got taught by braille
Look inside the cover, set it for 18 gauge, most old car sheet metal. Just do 2 or 3 second tacks 6 or 8 inches apart, let it cool and go between them, autobody is different than normal structural welding
You make it seem like a piece of cake and I love it!! Thank you some of the comments are hard to comprehend 😅 this one is in my lingo! Lol easy and simple ! 🫵✊️
Don't feel bad, thin metal can be difficult to weld. Is your gas a 75/25 mix? (Argon-CO2)
🥹 thank you, I sure tried, but I can't wait to get better! and yes 75/25!
Kristie, you rock! Just keep at it. Like everyone else says, keep it clean, practice, and more practice. Peace ❤
I HAVE a welder... but am NOT a welder! A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't!
😂🤣 I love this! Me too!!
Looking at the floor pan welds in the Nova, those are what is called a cold weld. Voltage and amps are too low and wire speed too fast. Inside your welder should be a basic chart of settings to get you started and adjust from there. On 18 gauge and lighter (meaning higher numbers) you'll want to tack weld every couple of inches from one end to the other and repeat until it's fully welded. For gas pressure inside the garage it should be set between 10 and 12 .
That makes absolute sense! Cold weld, never heard it but yeah I was burning through and just didn't understand at the time so yep that sounds like what I did 😅🫣 thank you for telling me what to do to fix that, I'm soaking this all in!
Look into Clecos. They are great for doing fit ups and holding your panel in place.
Definitely look up stitch welding. Its literally all tacks but warps metal less. Keeping the metal cool as possible is you friend. You're gonna do great!
I was super stoked when I seen you on State of the build! Another step in your TH-cam adventure!❤
❤️❤️ it was such a fun experience 🥹
Dont worry about beads on thin sheet metal youll have a tendency to cause major warping especially on big flat panels tack tack tack and move around then you can fill in between without concentration of heat and warping
This!! Yeah I was so tired I was just like ehhh do I wanna sand down the quarter right now? 🫣 I should of lol but solid advice I need to practice how to do a good tack before anything! Hope you've been doing good!!
Lots of good comments here. Take note of them. Another I can give is to find a table, bench or something to get off the floor. The more comfortable you can get, the more you can concentrate on the weld and settings and not be thinking about: My knee hurts, or my back hurts, or I can't hold still enough. Use both hands of you need to steady yourself. Even just a 2X4 knocked-together bench and a stool. Of course wood will burn, but just keep an eye out and a bottle of water handy and a fire extinguisher if the water won't do it LOL. Once you get the process down and settings worked out, THEN you can do better if you HAVE to be on the floor to weld something. If you ARE on the floor and welding overhead, put something in or over your ears. Those little glowing BBs will find your ear canal and you can't get it out. I have a couple welding caps that look like a Snoopy hat (WWI fighter helmet) with the flaps that come down over my ears just for that. Also be aware that hair will burn, keep it pulled back and covered as much as possible. Clamps, you can't have too many clamps. C-clamps of all sizes, vise grip type welding clamps etc. Yard sales, estate sales, look for things like that. Tools, clamps, an old small metal table that is just enough to set your practice pieces on to weld. Swap meets? ...maybe. It seems (to me) swap meet things are usually over priced. Save the swap meets for parts. And keep magnets away from the area you are welding. You can use them, just tack on the other end away from the magnet. Once the piece is in place, remove the magnet(s) all together. It does funny things to the welder. (steel wire/magnet? Get it?) It took me a little while to figure out what was going on when I got too close to my magnets. Also, heat will kill a magnet. I found that out at the same time. Sorry, I just can't seem to make a short comment. LOL Keep at it girl, you GOT this.
This was SO perfect! So much solid advice right here alot of which I had no idea about!!! This is one of those comments I screenshot because damn that's so great knowledge to read back over a couple times. Thank you so much for taking the time!! Getting off the floor is for sure step one,! I got this 💪
Your test bead welds actually look good! You do not want to run beads on sheet metal when you are welding it in for good. It’s only for testing the weld settings. It’s too hot for any sheet metal when you hold down the trigger that long with a bead. You do want to tack, always tack. The entire weld, all the way around should be nothing but small tacks spaced a few inches apart. It’s the ugliest form of welding but it’s what works with thin metal. The little red hot circles of a tack should never be bigger than a nickel, if you have a red hot bead that is an inch long or longer, it’s going to burn through. DANGER- that (tin metal) is galvanized metal. Do not weld that. The vapors are poisonous. You can see the poisonous vapors as a white smoke on the metal. You got this! Doing well and the welds look good!
Thank you so much for this! See here I am killing myself 🫣 I had no idea. Feel stupid but I'm learning alot from the shame haha. Thank you for taking the time to lay all that out for me! Alot of solid knowledge this comment was definitely screenshotted for future use! I so appreciate the support and not roasting me 😅 I deserve it thooo
I thought it was smart of you to not grind the welds on the floor patch ….. its not a beauty contest …… which i am sure YOU could win 🏆 lol😊
🤩 so you're saying I did at least one thing right? Lol jkjk You're the best
Oh yeah, cover all glass when grinding and welding or the sparks will melt into it....
Keep in mind if you don't weld a lot, the welding wire will tarnish and give a bad dirty weld. You can buy little wire cleaners that look like a little sponge that you run the wire through as it feeds to help clean it. Also the gas in the bottle if it sits to long separates and gives you a horrible weld. If you don't weld much regularly its better to use a smaller bottle so you go through it more but have good gas. The others gave great info on settings, cleaning the work, and stich little at a time, 6:56 and how far to keep the tip away from the job. It just takes doing it and adjusting. You got it. 6:56
This makes so much sense! Wow thank you for this knowledge!! Like this is what I mean who knows how many hour long videos I'd have to watch to get this knowledge right here. Thank you for taking the time! Screenshotted this info for sure! 🙏
Check out welding tips and tricks on here he is probably the best guy to watch on TH-cam
It's just called welding tips and tricks? Hmm I can't find it 😭
It appears you are not getting enough gas to your weld. When you pull the trigger on your gun (not welding just let the wire come out by itself and cut it off), look at the gauge that is moving on the gas tank. You will want it to be 15 minimum, I generally run 20-25. More gas = cleaner weld but you will consume your tank faster. Your welds also look a bit hot as in the voltage can be dialed back a bit. I weld a lot of sheet metal with a Lincoln 140 which only has 4 voltage settings, I use the lowest 95% of the time. The weld itself actually looks pretty good if you get your settings dialed in. The wire speed looks right. When welding 2 pieces of metal together, it is slightly more difficult as you need start the weld on piece A, go across the gap, to piece B, and back across the gap...like drawing a little tiny "O"...everyone says "C" but I go all the way back around. When you do those quarters, place a single weld about every 6" then let it cool for longer than you think it will take (air blown on it helps) then come back and put another weld 6" apart, it will take a very long time to weld that completely but if it warps you are in for a nightmare so slow is critical. I put my hand near the weld after a few minutes and if I feel any heat at all I let it cool completely down before I start my next set of stitch welds. Also, be careful with your grinding of the welds as it creates a lot of heat too; I know this from experience and warping a panel is not something you want to deal with.
Wow this is brilliant!! Thank you so much forbdropping your knowledge here for me. Let me tellbyou that I definitely screenshotted it and am gonna be reading that a few more times. Super easy to understand and I can tell you've done this alot. Just thanks so much! I've heard c alot but the O does make more sense to me! Thanks for not obliterating me on my welds and still trying to drop a compliment in there 🥹 I tried but wow do I got so much to learn. This was a very helpful comment! Thank you again!
The weld in the bottom middle looks great plus you got alotta more time to practice
🧐 here's me searching for which weld you're talking about 😂 cause to me I saw SHAME! Lol thank you so much though feels good to know that there's hope for me ☝️✊️🫶
I ain’t gonna lie to ya I don’t know anything about welding haha BUT I do love watchin your videos buckaroo 🫶🏼
😂🤣😂🤣 oh you're the best 😊🫵🫶
The best tip I got learning to weld, was anything you cut apart you can weld back together and anything you weld can be cut apart. Also on the poisonous gas from galv metal, if you get a sweet taste in your mouth you should drink milk. If you burn yourself put the burn on cold metal and transfer the heat from the burn to the metal. You got this girl!
Solid tips right there! I definitely did not know that! How crazy thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge! Would have never guessed!😯
You probably won't be able to run a bead with the sheet metal.. Put heat on lowest setting and start there.. see if you getting penatration on bottom. You will see it. You make a bunch of "tack" welds and keep putting them together to make a stitch weld. Keep angle about 45 from where you want to weld and pull the "weld puddle" . Lots of videos for MIG welding.. Keep trying..
Thank you for dropping some knowledge!! Solid advice thank you!!
Look on the inside cover on the welder it will give you some settings to get started with, adjust from there. Also can't weld continuous on thin sheet metal you will burn through
That's a solid place to start thank you. 🫣 idk why I didn't think if looking on the welder honestly. But that makes sense every bit of knowledge here I'm soaking it in. Thank you !
THE biggest tip for welding is to make sure all surfaces to be welded are as clean as possible, prep is everything when welding old metal. and take your time! You'll get it Kirstie!
That is a HUGE tip! Thank you because I know I definitely slacked on that step with the nova floorpans in parts and it got messy! 😅 I appreciate you!
Your doing awesome just going out there doing it no matter what I think it's really cool believe me how determine you are I know you will master the weld keep up the good work your doing great
This is the type of support that I'm talking about, thank you so much! For believing in me when even I'm unsure I believe in me 😅🫣🫵🙏

Please, please, get a fire extinguisher or two. Attach one to your welding cart. The welder you have is a decent welder for home. If doing sheet metal tack welds are best. Its time consuming and patience is key but you'll be happier with the results and you'll spend a lot less time grinding and rewelding. Well sorta lol. Ishmel3884 has some good advice on set up and getting started and i would reiterate the metal needs to be clean (oil free, sanded, and rust free if possible, etc) . If possible get some thicker scrap metal to practice on, it will be easier to learn on. Muffler shops, any fab shops ( places that upfit trucks with beds and tool boxes) and machine/ mechanic shops should have scrap. Practice, practice, practice. Oh maybe the local high school that has a welding class could help you out and they would probably have some scrap also. My daughter is taking welding in high school. Keep after it !!! Really enjoy your channel!!
Try Ausley's Chevelle Parts for your dad's car that's where I get all my parts and sheet metal
Everyone welds slightly different your welder should have recommended setting based on metal thickness, it's a good starting point to learn. Also, on panels jumping around with tacks is better then trying to make 1 continuous weld so the heat doesn't warp the panel. Lower the voltage/ lower wire speed if burning holes or move faster. Panels are around 16-18guage Look at the puddle you create while welding and you can push or drag it depending on welding technique used. It takes lots of practice i went through many bottles and wires spools while learning
That is a good starting point!! Thank you for taking the time! I'm gonna look over the welder for those recommendations. Idk why I didn't think to start there. See this is the stuff I just appreciate so much! Thank you thank you
Carl Fisher up in Canada... TH-cam channel called Make It Custom: th-cam.com/video/nF1T8GOBIpw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Cpwii7dLgN3B-w-9
When welding hold the head at a slight angle towards the direction you're going pointing away from the way you're going & draw a little circle or a letter C making sure to hit both pieces of material. With thinner stuff just "stitch" weld it by tacking it every few inches then come back to where you started and keep going until all the seams are done, this will prevent warpage by too much heat. You should check out Paintucation by Kevin, he's restoring that rotten firebird/ Camaro thing Derek had on VGG
I'll definitely check him out! And thank you for that advice! That's some solid advice seeing I was just zig zaggin around! This gave me a good mental picture, thanks for taking the time! These comments I totally screenshot for future use! 😅🙏
I know you don’t have much time but you really do need to watch a couple videos on beginner welding.
This is facts! 💯🙏
You actually did a pretty good job! Just need a little explanation of the basics and you’ll do just fine!
I learned how to weld by doing heat shields, I burned through so many before I learned lol
😂 feels good to know I ain't alone on the struggle bus when it comes to learning this art man! You rock lol
@kirstieskarz totally, it's a skill that takes time to learn. I'm not professionally trained either so the learning curve wasn't as quick as I would have liked but I eventually got there and you will too. Sorry for the rambling sentence lol
gas 75/25 wire 025 try to keep nozzle about 1/2 inch from work. welds look good on metal that thin. make short welds letting weld cool a little. (white smoke) galvanized metal .poisonous must grind off .practice practice practice! good job kirstie
Thank youuu for those numbers! It's all the technical stuff that I have no idea about! So appreciate you! 🙏
@@kirstieskarzof course I'm new to your channel and everybody is giving you a pretty good advice. You only thing I could add is that gas he is talking about which is 75/25 is actually 75% Argon gas 25% CO2 that gives a smoother weld than using 100% CO2. With my Miller welder I can use 023 wire in it but 025 will work good for you to that is the diameter of the wire. The smaller the wire the better you will have on thin metal, you also want to match the tip that the wire comes out of to the wire diameter that you have.
I'm right there with you on the welding. I have a decent Lincoln welder, but I suck at it. I'm pretty handy with a grinder to cover it up the ugly welds (or not). I usually sucker my son into coming over to do it for me, but he's getting wise to my game. LOL. Bottom line is I need to practice more.
😂🤣 the cover up with the ol grinder game! Lol a game I'll probably get good at 😂 you rock!!
My first video was made 2 months ago. In your dad's car there was a lot of penny's you should make key changes from them and give them away to your family. When my dad die last October 28 I made lucky money from what he had in his wallet. I love your videos 😊
This is just SUCH AND AMAZING IDEA!!!!! I've wondered and wondered what to do with all his spare change in the El! Brilliant!😊 I so appreciate the support! Truly!!
Youre onto what you gotta do. Id say focus on learning a good spot weld aince thats how the quarter was welded on. Anyways you know where to get ahold of me. Ask me anything 24/7. I got you lady😉👌
🤩🙏 so appreciate the support always! And yeah I probably should master the easiest thing before getting all zig zaggy 😆😅
Blizzard conditions in the Springs. Drifts upto 3..' Booo! On the welding front, your gas should be around 15-25 cfm on the flow meter when pulling trigger. Make sure your metal is clean. From the supplier it will have oil and mill scale, grind the work areas first. Since you are not using flix core wire you need to push the bead forward. Rule: push gas and pull flux core. When you pull gas you will get a high lumpy weld which will make you want to turn up the heat causing blowouts(burn thru). The Titanium welder has a 25% duty cycle and is really only good for 1/2" long welds at a time before machine power output degrades. Clean metal, 15+ on the gas and push the tip forward. You'll figure it out! OBTW watch every post of Flying Sparks Garage...Emily and Aaron make great content!
This is amazing advice thank you so much for all that information like I truly had no idea!! Pulling just felt right 😅 pushing felt so wrong lol gosh I have alot to learn! Thank you for taking the time!!!
@kirstieskarz You're welcome. There are different schools of thought on the push vs. pull methods. You can work with both as mig welding is a fairly forgiving process. As for my preference on sheet metal the reasons for the push method is that I find; it gives less heat build up on the material and less chance of blowout. The welds will be flatter as you will be pushing material forward, not making a hot puddle to drag material out of when pulling the weld bead. 110v welding units have limitations.. mainly less range of duty cycle, which is available steady clean unfluctuating current. I think with the Titanium unit by using your CO2 Argon mix you are getting the best possible performance from that unit...so there will be only much to expect on welding quality. Mig welding is an easy to learn process and if you find an opportunity to practice on a good 220v unit, think you'll find out you can weld pretty good...especially with all your hours working on the Nova floor pan repairs.
Have you thought of using a merch company to help you out? Maybe contact Bunker Branding or Cleetus McFarland. I just found you channel through your Peak video with Emily and I've watched several of your videos now. You have a great channel! I'm glad I found it. Just keep on keepin' on. You're may going through a "full plate" time right now but I'm sure it'll pay off soon. Hang in there. You got this. Be safe!
Check if there is a community ed class for welding,or if your auto parts store offers a class to learn some pointers!
Good idea! 💡
sure wish you were closer so i could teach you some welding ex pipe welder here also barge builder
Use seam sealer on floor & trunk pan welds to keep exhaust gasses & everything else out of the passenger compartment! Also; Garage door springs break from time to time. Today is Wednesday. Monday's video from another channel, guy said he just had the repair guys replace a spring on his door. They only last so long.
