Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 ม.ค. 2023
Our Goal is to bring you our perspective to Off-Grid life and teach you how we live, we live in an unorganized/ unincorporated township. Our focus is on bringing content that is NOT provocative click bait and appropriate for all ages. Follow along with us on our journey as we make and learn from our mistakes. We are a family of 4 that own a gorgeous 160 acre property that is Off-Grid in Northern Ontario Canada. We are in the middle of building a LOG cabin and a Off-Grid home-stead on this gorgeous piece of land.
Thankyou for watching and have a great day!!

We have to get this done NOW before the cold weather hits; packing log hauling trails
We got a warm spell which is perfect for packing trails so that we can get our logs hauled out once the weather turns cold and freezes the swamp. we have to get it done NOW as in the next 2 days it is supposed to get down to -15 C which will freeze everything solid and make a really good ice base. We used the tractor and a truck hood loaded with snow to pack the log hauling trail. If we don't get it done NOW we likely will not be able to pack the trail proper and risk not being able to haul the logs out this winter.

The ANTIfreeze froze in the tractor now what? l packing trail l more firewood
มุมมอง 42Kวันที่ผ่านมา
The antifreeze apparently had too much water in it as it got low in the summer and I topped it up with a bit of water, well it froze overnight during -15. We got the tractor and radiator warmed up and the frozen antifreeze melted and drained out. We refilled with new heavy duty diesel antifreeze. Once the new antifreeze was in I went out to try it out and pack some sled/ wood hauling trails. Pa...

Simple log bunk beds only HAND TOOLS and a chain saw

We wanted to get some practice working with logs and building log furniture as we eventually want to build all our furniture for our off-grid log cabin from logs. This was a very DIY attempt using only hand tools as well as some cuts with a chainsaw. We used a hand auger to drill all the holes for the mortise and tenon joint's. This is the first attempt we have had building furniture from logs ...

I would think about a quick connect heater from one of your other vehicles to warm the motor I did that with diesels three times or more the size of yours
I thought about it before, only thing I I tend to park the tractor in spots that are not accessible. Lighting a fire under seams to work well, I'm going to upgrade the block heater from the stupid freeze plug style that is slow to the same one I had I'm my old vw jetta, pulls 1500w and is meant for a semi, 1/2hr plugged In and snows melting on the hood and coolant is at 90°C. It was way over kill but worked awesome if you forgot to turn a timer on or something. Otherwise this freeze plug style is so slow I have to run the generator forever and that's expencive. Ideally the diesel fired Espar coolant heater would be ideal but last time I looked was also $1500can so that's a no go for this old thing.
That ancient snowblower has probably moved a lot snow in it's time . I move my banks back also. Best wishes in your endeavors
Thank you very much, life is awesome! We love it here! And I bet the old girl has moved alot, I have had it for probably 8 years or so and it was old when I got it. I like old everything, including vehicles. They are built to last and use real metal not paper thin melted down rust like the new junk. This thing is bigger then it looks it moves ALOT of snow in a hurry, its bigger then most walk behind blowers.
Antifreeze doesnt freeze lol.
You are correct! Well sort of, straight concentrate can, it needs water to activate. But basicaly too much water freezes
@offgridandunorganized straight concentrate still won't freeze but it can gel up. Best bet is to just change it regularly. You're lucky it's an old tractor. Today's junk would've been a pricey fix. Goodluck!
Today's junk let's not start on that scrap metal that leaks just by looking at it, I drive old stuff as it's built to last and built to be fixed no electronics. I have got out of habit with as much maintenance as it's harder without a shop anymore, tools In storage hard to dig out, anything u drop your looking through a sand pit for or snow bank, shop is a priority that's happening! I miss having something inside to work in and tools layer out and organized.
@offgridandunorganized definitely get yourself a small work space going, even a shed. Also painting tools bright orange can help with the snow lol, i also end up working in snow banks every year 🤣
I am going to do something next year likely. Right now everything is temporarily where we is, it's the only spot we could get the rv off the road to setup and live while we build. We are building a half mile away on the other side if our property so hopefully next winter we are able to get everything moved back there and can setup more. Won't have a shop but hopefully can get something temporary, even a tarp lean too up to atleast get out of the snow. I planned on doing that this year on the side of the storage trailer but ran out of time and had other things we wanted done before the snow hit. I can't fantom painting my tools lol, I have wayyy to many snap on tools and can't come to paint them... it's a great idea but I just can't do that to the tools, personal choice.
Not much heat in that wood.
The stove it's self does not make alot of heat as it's so small, normaly I light an open fire and been doing that since again as it's faster. It was a trial, it's all dead standing spruce so lots of heat.
Save time by cutting poles and dragging to storage shed area. You can block to length as you need. If you get more snow it will be harder.
That's actualy what we did before the video, it was more of an excuse to try the sled out. Since then it's 4ft we cut to and strap that down. Deffinatly alot more in a haul.
And that's how it's done. Eventually that's how we will have to heat our homes. But they say natural gas is in an abundance we've got hundreds and hundreds of years of natural gas.
Yeah "they say" the same one that charge u a monthly fee to be THEIR customer and buy their gas. That makes sence NOT! eventually the world might wake up maybe, we as a race have used wood (or coal) for hundreds of thousands years to heat with, we got it for free from nature. I am not saying everyone should get a wood stove but there is better technology's then a metal box stove to efficiently heat a space, namely masonry heaters used In Europe and the like, much more efficient. Wood is so much more of a beautiful heat vs a forced air furnace.
When you have a family with two kids maybe, and your living off the grid you are teaching your kids how to live a better life where they will never want to live inna big city. Your kids are very lucky to be able to grow up on that environment. I hope they never have to experience the life I've had to endure. Moving to Alaska next year no matter what.
Thank you, we grew up in the country living simply so we were drawn to the life style as well, the boys absolutely love being here and doing what we are. It may be rough but this is the begining and everyone starts some where (not talking about those who rent a hotel for a year while having a contractor build their stuff). The big city is a scary place in reality, the animals that wander the wilderness are way safer to surround you then the animals that wander the big city's, getting out is the only solution. Best of luck on your journey, sometimes you just got to make a decision and jump in head first. Everything is uphill from there.
You need better chains, some with more chain on top of the tire , just pieces can be added to the ones youv'e got.
These are pretty comon "4link" style chains, I would love some forestry spikey chains but those are really hard to find. What is needed is actualy the rear tires to be loaded, that would help alot!
Stop cutting down healthy trees if they're not on your property 😤
I am not sure where you get that idea, neather are true. Those tress are not healthy they are dead, do you see the missing needles? And missing bark? Conifers do not loose needles unless they are DEAD. Also we live there full time so I have no idea why you think we don't.
You clean back 15 or so feet so the plow when and if he comes doesn't fill in the end of your driveway. I do the same. Watch out for the roof of the trailer. It will collect snow and will cave in if you get too much snow on it.
Thank you, seams more do know that trick then thought, I shovel the roof off as needed, I try and keep some snow as it's insulation, we all know rvs don't really have insulation. If it gets warm I shovel it off so it does not collapse, most of the snow just melts and runs off as icicles anyway due to lack of insulation. I lived in a rv for 8 years when I was a teenager so I'm sort of used to it, Thank you for the suggestion as alot do not know that!
Always leave logs 8 - 10 ft Long get as many to your house as possible you can cut a bit more each day eventually building up a supply of split wood
That was a trail it failed! We now do about 4 ft and strap them down, before snow I was pulling full ĺenth with atv or tractor, we wanted to try the sled out and that whole situation failed, new trail new lenth now and alot more wood in a trip.
Always prepare for winter before winter comes.
We know that, we were prepared by the decision we made. Everything is working out as planned and going great. Not ideal but it's apart of building and moving forward in life.
Let's see, it appears to be cold & below freezing (32 degrees) since there's snow on the ground so why would you leave your camper door open at the beginning of the video when starting up the tractor. So is it a habit to not close your door when you leave the camper, I'm guessing the heats on or a stove is lit if you living in that camper?
That one is our storage trailer it has a wood stove from the previous owner but we don't use it other then storage. I leave the door open during the day when going in an out it's easier and keeps the humpty from forming with fresh air.
@@offgridandunorganized Ok, that's good it not your residence your living in. I watch a lot of foreign camping video with tents or etc. & they always will be setting there eating or etc. with there door/flap completely open or unzipped like it's not cold. The doing for the video which bugs me bc I know its cold. I watched one last night where she set up her tent with everything, lit here kerosene heater & a wood stove & lay down on her inflatable bed with the 2 door openings open to show she was tired. it makes no sense to be cold enough to have heat on & have the doors open.
Yeah that makes sence, sometimes curtain things have to be done for filming, filming can be hard in small spaces to get the right shot. But for us that's just the storage trailer and it was cold enough its in and out fast close the door.

Thank you, I like my organization but at the same time we moved mid summer and spent all summer collecting logs and clearing so we can start building a real home/cabin next spring, only so much time for so many things and we know what works and what does not in terms of heating.

Merry Christmas from Kentucky God bless
Merry Christmas.
I've never thought of snow as distilled water. Greetings from Kentucky
I am not sure it is but that's how I think of it as water evaporates and condenses in the clouds, then comes down as rain or snow. The exact same process used in distillation of water. Now if one lived in a more industrialized location it may not be a good idea to use snow or rain water for fear of contamination..
This was my 1st time viewing your journey. Good luck. Greetings from Kentucky
Thank you, things are going great actualy we have been living off grid for 4 years now and just moved this summer to this place. Life is great.

Thank you hello Kentucky
What's gonna work? TEAMWORK!
It sure does! I can't do it by my self but the kids helping us that little extra needed.
Ya know, you could do a whole video just on that tractor. I would be interested in the story behind it, and I would bet others would be as well.
I never thought of that actually, there is a whole storey on it. I probably could make it long enough to be a video, I will have to think on that of how to do it and a title. I like your idea, gives me video ideas thank you.
Please do one on tractor. I second the motion
Thank you, looks like there is deffinatly interest. I will have to do that soon for you.
how come yall dont save for fire wood winters commn
Everything in the video was not worth saving, too small so it got burnt. Anything larger we did keep in later videos. No one wants to handle 1" diameter stuff it burns too fast to be useful.
To freeze in the water sections, take a shovel and fill the wet areas with snow, chop up the mixture till it looks wet again than add more snow and mix till it is thick (very thick) slush it will freeze in solid over night. You only need to do the real deep sections, the rest will freeze itself. Hint; the more snow you add the quicker it will freeze!
THANK YOU that's exactualy what I wanted to hear! I will have to go do that I'm the next couple days as its staying -20 or so now so that will deffinalty freeze over, Thank you so much!
For goodness sake let people do as they need.!! So what if the lead title isn’t 100% correct.!! TH-cam are not idiots and it takes a lot more than one silly title to remove you surely. It’s sad how people think sometimes. There’s some real clickbait going on and even if it’s reported it’s nearly always left alone. Do as you feel I say but just watch how you write your title as some people are really mean it seems. Have fun collecting firewood. Merry Christmas to you all.
Merry Christmas, you are correct youtube is basicaly all click bait and we both know what that means. Some people get offended over anything, in reality my videos are true and the title is the composition of the video. That title was exactualy what the video was about nothing trickery but legitimate. I spend a ridiculous amount of time on the tittle researching and adjusting to fit the content and interests of veiwers, if that title was something along the line of watch me cut fire wood no one would watch it eather so it has to be interesting while being truthfully. Some youtubers fake their videos it's a known fact so that raises some suspicions from viewers but what we do is what we are doing. We live how it's shown, sometimes more basic as thers stuff we don't show as it's somewhat too rudimentary for the audience to comprehend or watch without inventing some new colorful words over. But with youtube and channels EXPLODING over click bait videos (ladies usualy) yet nothing happens to their channels or content when it clearly violates youtubes code of conduct for anyone who has actually read it.
I live in county and we always plow extra at the end of driveway so we don't get plowed in. And as far as cutting wood we always do it in winter also.😊
Thank you, it seams like a country foke thing to plow the lane way back. It's not ideal to cut in winter but when you move mid summer and are focused on getting things ready to build so your not living in a rv forever something take priority over others, this is just one of those years. If one is cutting live trees winter is ideal as the sap is down and they dry ALOT faster, most don't realize that.
Lots of fun as long as it don't break down in the creek ! That poor old tractor isn't going to have anything left by the time your road is froze in, Good thing you don't mind fixing 👍, It's to bad you didn't keep you road on higher ground, You have some nice trees out there, Good luck"
Thank you sir, as to the road we followed the old logging trail when we first started cutting trails and exploring. That's where it went so we went, it was not nearly as bad at the time but the summer really made a mess of it. Looking back now I would have took another route as there is a dryer one, we just started walking and marking the old logging trails. The poor old tractor has had a rough life that's what's its done the whole time I have had it, used to skid logs in the winter for fire wood where I grew up. Breaking down in the creek would not be horrendous, I would have to walk home for tools. The worst is if I get off the trail, I did that in the summer and the one side was up to the floor boards in mud. That was fun getting out. We are badicaly done using that trail once we get the logs moved out, we are moving to the other side of our property.
Good grading work.
Thank you, it really did pack beautifully.
6 cords of wood to make it through winter,guys..it aint no shit.
I have never burnt as little as 6 cord, usualy 12+ and everything up here is soft wood not hard wood.
Awesome stuff man Ill check out your other videos.
Thank you very much
That tractor is a beast
That it sure is, uglier then anything anyone ever seen but it's also more dependable then most anything out there.
no comment to be kind
Thank you
Saw your other video with the frozen radiator, wondered what combination of machines that is- what is the "back half" the VW diesel is mated to?
The body, frame, transmition and everything else is massey harris 22 from the 50s? The engine is a 1.6L IDI VW diesel from a mid 80s jetta. Everything is original minus the engine. And maybe the tire size, the rears are not original rims so I am unsure what the size should have been, close as they fit the fenders but the centers have been cut out and a different center welded in.
It's very normal in Europe for older small tractors to have mtd or mt engines, some even come with Renault longblocks
Hello, sorry I do not understand the reference to mtd or Mt blocks, in Canada mtd is a crappy lawn tractor manufacturer so google did not help me to understand your abbreviation.
Who needs a 4x4...😂😂😂
This guy does! I really wish it was 4x4 actualy, I think I need to get the rear tires loaded though and stay out of the swamp. It would pull so much better with more weight.
You drive that tractor like it was stolen.... LoL 😁😅😅
Thank you lol. I normally if it's just me cruise around in 1st gear at an idle. On camera I try to make it a little more exciting as I know my self would fall asleep watching how I normally drive. If I'm by my self I take my time, no hurry to be no where.
We got it done just in time! Everything froze over night and is rock hard now!
Good deal !!
Thank you very much!
@@offgridandunorganized Merry Christmas to you and your family!🎄
Thank you, merry Christmas to you as well.
where is the hood? with it on you get the engin warmer...and when you park it for short time you can lay a thick blanket over it to help it hold the warm tenperature
The hood is beside the storage trailer, the fuel tank leaked last winter so I temporary put a different one on but the filler cap is not in the right place so I can't put the hood on as it does not fit then just sits there and rattles something fierce as well as usualy falls off. The old tank is beyond fixing as the seam is leaking AGAIN it's been repaired probably half a dozen times over the years. I need to get a new one built from scratch. The engine gets plenty warm, it's and IDI diesel and they make ALOT of heat.
@@offgridandunorganized Thanks for a fine answer...hope you get a new tank to the tractor.
Thank you, I have to have a welding shop build me one is what I am thinking, unless I am able to buy one through a restoration place. I looked around and have not seen anything yet.

You dont use "negative" when measuring temperature.
It all means the same thing, different people say things different, different country's or even parts of a country have a different meaning for the same thing.
Should stay far away from larger toys than a screwdriver!
I am not sure why you would say that but not everything is perfect in life.
It's real antifreeze but with too much water, it was low in the summer (hose leaked) and so I just topped it up with water as I was planning on changing out the antifreeze as it was 10+years old anyway so it was way past its prime. I just forgot about it and never got around to changing, I check the fluids every morning and thats when I noticed it was Chrystal. That day was -10C during day and ‐16C the night before.

What is this ? Three stooges loging company
Nope an experiment that failed, we were testing some stuff and are now doing everything different.
That snow blower sounds like it's on its last leg
Actualy it's really good and runs strong, I tryed to put a text on the screen saying the throttle was stuck on high idle. That may have not been the most visible, when I moved in the summer I never payed attention to where I left the throttle and once it got cold it iced up so it would not be able to Rev up so I was stuck using it at a high idle untill it made enough heat to unthaw the cable and then I was able to Rev it up. Those old ones are built way better then anything in the past 20 years the stuff now is garbage and not worth a dime. The old ones are built to last and built to be repaired. I did notice a noice in the front on camera (can't hear it while using it) I'm thinking maybe a bearing is going bad.
omg!! how un responsible!!!! U do fire wood in the spring!! WTF??it needs time to dry in a wood shed, i think u should be finguring out what to do at an "off Grid cabin" befor u take ur kids there!!!... done with this channel!!!😖😡
Sorry you feel that, maybe check out some other videos that will explain the summer and what happened. Not everything is as it seams in 1 video
Wouldnt hurt to put sides on sled for hauling would. We always started away head off winter to stack and dry in covered wood shed.
Thank you, normally we do too but its been so busy we just have not had time and we knew we could cut and burn this bone dry fir during the winter. Since then we stoped cutting to lenth and cut 4ft or so and strap that down, sure works better and getting more wood on a load. It was an experiment as we got snow so trying out the sled. Before we were pulling the trees up full lenth with the atv or tractor and blocking them up here.
Steer chain helps without much rear brakes to steer with
That's a good idea! I honestly never thought of putting chains on 2wd front tires for steering, 4wd yes but not 2wd. The brakes on the 22s are there for looks basicaly, to give customers a sence of security that it has a brake pedal. They are a realy poor design, a ball and cam plate that actualy gets pulled off by the rotation of the axle. Makes sence to have the moving tractor drag its own brakes off. It will not brake steer, if you push really hard you can kind of convince it to atleast take a corner but not no turning on a dime like most tractors will with brake steer.
@offgridandunorganized wish I knew how to post a picture of mine. Lol
That I am not sure if it's possible even. I will have to look into front tire chains, so they really make that much difference in steering?
What is that old tractor? Massey Ferguson? Or something. Im just curious. I have a 68 ford 4500 industrial backhoe with ice chains. Fun to move snow and logging
Massey harris 22 from the 60s? Originaly a continental? Gas engine now a 1.6 Volkswagen diesel. Those old 4000s are good tractors my mother has one, ice chains are fun. These are just normal chains not the spokey forestry/ ice chains.
Simple things that can help clean and refresh your clothes. Dissolve some banking soda in water and put in with your soap, is great for so much! Use some white vinegar in the rinse, great fabric softener and both helps with smells.
Thank you, I actually do that from time to time or as needed. But not always as it does get expencive, I reserve that for as needed. Thank you for sharing, not alot of folks know this anymore with the age of scent boosters and fabric softeners.
@ that is awesome! Baking soda cuts grease like nothing else! I use it with dish soap to clean my drains by poring several pots of boiling water down. Works fantastic washing dishes and getting oil out in bottles that are hard to clean inside so I can recycle clean containers. I also brush my teeth with it and add to my fav shampoo on occasion. I make my own deodorant and use it there as well!
Thank you, the last 2 I did for years too actualy and works very well. It sure helps with greasy clothes, I pull wrenches off camera mostly fixing our junk and sure can get alot of oil on your work clothes and baking soda in the wash deffinatly helps alot or with strong smells like gasoline.
@ I love inexpensive and non harmful products to use especially when you can use them in so many ways!
That's very true, the modern world is so dependent on chemicals when nature provides what we need. Some of us are allergic to chemicals or artificial fragrances so we stay away from that all together. The natural works better.
Used to live in the Yukon Territory. Made five loaves of bread and a batch of donuts everyday. We had thirteen dogs to feed, ten of them outdoors. I cooked them mash twice a day with pig chop. Pig food is six percent protein. We had trouble getting the cars going too. The Honda.Civic ran great, just like a snowmobile. It went up and over snowbank like nothing. Good times!
That's funny! But also awesome times, both of us grew up into this life so we've done our fair share of outdoors. That is a crazy amount of bread to make, I used to make a loaf every couple days I til I became gluten intolerant.... life's less fun now home made bread is delicious. If you are referring to hog grower pellets you give pigs, then yes that's about all our dogs ate growing up as my mother had pigs way back in the day before quota came along and drove everyone up or out. So the dogs always got into what spilled from bins or slashed out of feed trofs from the feed augers. Those dogs were always in great shape better then most that get "dog food" it must have slot more nutrients or something that farm dogs need or working dogs
