    Wow those are some very straight logs. Love the old tractor still getting the job done. Thanks for sharing take care and stay safe.

      Thankyou! The logs are Dead straight took alot to find them and all the same size. The old tractor tryed to die once it came from a farmers fence row years ago for parts for an antique tractor restoration and then got put back into service because we could, its an amazing old girl. Have an amazing day!

    That tractor does an amazing job, and I can’t believe how straight the trees look 💪👍

      Thankyou! The tractor is very nimble and great in dence bush. It was struggling on these logs as they are 42ft long, wheel weights or loaded tires would have fixed the traction issue but I prefer the tractor stay light for the times I drive through wet areas it does not sink out of sight. The logs are are basically perfectly straight, they took alot of scouting to find the exact same size as well as same taper and perfectly straight, that was a big accomplishment just finding the 3. They black spruce and the trees around them must have helped convince them to grow nice and straight, they sure are a beauty.

    intersting.i could be wrong but i thought the taper had to be away from the log.anyway i am building a log cabin to. however my walls are up . starting the roof. i have installed 60 logs on a 14 x 16 cabin. keep it up.building a log cabin is very inspiring work!

      You may be right too, I find it functions better with the taper toward the log the otherwise it digs in more and is less controllable. This is the way I have seen others do it so who knows, to each their own and its more about what works for each person, nothing in life is a 1 size fits all. Awesome job! This is very rewarding vs stick framing something, or atleast I am getting a massive amount of satisfaction following out the dream of doing what we did traditionally before modern civilization took over. Keep going on your prodject it sounds awesome!

    Great progress. Hope the cold weather/snow doesn't come too soon.

      That's hilarious! Definitely a dream. 2 months untill snow is down for good, usualy up here middle of October to end of October the snow comes and stays. I am definitely feeling a pinch in that regards.

    The draw knife will work even better if you use it at an angle. Also it might help to spray some cooking spray on the blade like with a snow shovel. Wouldn't have to clean it off as much.

      Thankyou for the suggestion, I have never heard of oiling the blade (besides storage to prevent rust) I will have to try that and see if it makes a difference. The cambion is really sticky this time of year.

    I recently came across your channel and just finished watching all of your past videos. I’m very interested to see how you progress along this very ambitious project. What size cabin are you planning on building?

    • @offgridandunorganized
      @offgridandunorganized  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thankyou! We are very excited to see the dream come alive too, we are building a 30x30 with a half second story loft. We chose that size as the kids both want to build their own anyway but also be comfortable as we age, we wanted a healthy house not a another "plastic" house as with modern construction as well as the only thing that fits the surrounding vast forest is a log cabin.

    There's nothing like having Spruce pitch on your hands.

    • @offgridandunorganized
      @offgridandunorganized  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You nailed it! These ones are black spruce and eather they are late season or what I don't know but they are not sticky it feels like water! The rest of the logs are green spruce and they are really sticky cloaths or anything get covered. I have no experience with black spruce before this so I have no idea how they act over the cource of a season even weather they peel better some times then others, I have only dealt with green spruce prior. Eather way it is fun I enjoy a hard day and having something to show for it, showers and laundry fix most of it.

    Those are pretty nice logs :) It should be a sturdy roof for sure, It's to bad you didn't get them peeled In May Or June it just all pulls off by hand & no white layers left, Your young with lots of energy & a good back but it play out lol, Good video

      Thankyou! These are black spruce which I have never seen before moving up here, the green spruce still peel decently even now but this is the first time working with black spruce, do you have any experience with black spruce in regards to how it peels at different times of the year? I had planned to be up here when the snow went away but I was half way through another prodject I could not drop and go. But that's life and seeing a project though helps give a sence of accomplishment!

      @@offgridandunorganized Those were pretty nice trees they looked more like a balsum or white our black spruce here pretty rough bark compared to the ones you peeled , Yes I was peeling some in video about year & a half ago & I found working from the top down is easier, when sap is full on going up late April to mid June Black or White about the same then the black if we get a heat wave 30c late May the bark starts to grab on, I think every year is a little different,

      You might be right too, it's a new variety I have never seen and a Google search came up looking like black spruce. I know the basics (more hardwood as that's where I grew up). They taper very little grow really tall and have a spruce needle just different bark and are alot lighter compared to green spruce. They sound like how the green spruce were peeling the beginning of august still. I wish I made it in the spring the slowest one yet took me 4.5hrs it was like concrete, draw knife couldn't even cut it and the cambiant was almost rubbery so it would slide not cut. They are a beauty, there's some monsters out there that are too big for us some real dinosaurs (atleast for this area that lost all the old growth 100yrs ago to a fire). I will second the year differences last year 2023 may 20th we still had 3ft of snow up here, this year it was all gone the beginning if may and dryed up, we were cutting trail the second week of May and the black flys were out.

      @@offgridandunorganized Yes crazy spring we had our first big forest fire on the 4th of May 17th of May last year, But ya black spruce has a much rougher bark & darker needles generally shorter bushier branches , If I remember I'll try to show a bit we have a mix of black white & tamarack all somewhat close, I will be back out there lots :)

      @offgridandunorganized  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok thankyou I will have to watch for that on your channel, there is some that have the bark you describe too with a spruce type needle (not jack pine but have those too).

    So far i have gathered that ak has terrible soil, so you might want to consider using all scraps of wood, bark, sawdust, food waste( try to bury any food into the compost pile). Put compost close to garden area. 😉 love the content, i know you are in Canada . Hope you have better soil.hope you're subs climb, and views soar.

      Thankyou very much!!!! Our particular spot is almost no soil but we have rock sand and gravel so we have the materials we need for a nice driveway in the future. On one end we are lucky, but the soil up here is very acidic anyway, we are lucky enough to have a MASSIVE pile of rotten wood about 20-30 years old almost just powdered and beautiful soil all remnants of logging years ago. We we will have to absolutely build raised garden beds so we have the luxury to chose the fill. Between the rotten wood, a big pile of moss we are saving to rot down, we have chickens (not shown in videos) so they provide us some manure as well as we have some local hobby farms that could provide further compost/manure. All of our food waste is recycled through our chickens, they devour it. I have been kind of mentally noting what we have to use to fill for gardening in the future, but any in ground is out of the question and not really feasible. Thankyou very much for the support and kind words it means alot!!

      That's a good suggestion, that totally gaped my mind when I posted that responce. We have bears so defiantly a concern, the last thing I want to do is attract them. I give it to the chickens anyway they enjoy the snacks. Thankyou.

      The odd time I do to scrap the cambium layer off, but otherwise I am using it correct, the taper of the blade is toward the log. Sometimes I have to use it vertical to get get last of the cambium off as it is really stick.
