is it worth buying a wood burning stove for free heat? this is what you need to do...
Are you considering buying a log burning stove or have you just bought one and found buying wood is expensive? So how can you make it work for your wallet?
This is a guide on how to run your wood or log burning stove for free, all the things you need to consider from finding the wood, processing the wood, storing the wood to burning the wood and keeping on top of things.
Obviously you'll need to beg, borrow or even buy some equipment, but how can you keep that wood flowing, seasoning and burning?
Everything is context based, mine is I am currently in the UK near London, while harder to come by I do actually know people who would tell me "wood doesn't grow on trees you know!"

log store building, improving a rubbish one without wasting wood
Thank you for posting and providing all the details. I had this exact same problem, and you saved me a ton of time and hassle. Thank you very much for sharing all of your work..
You are most welcome! Glad it helped.
I make charcoal in my log burner using dry wood chips and an enamel lidded roaster. The charcoal has many uses, biochar will improve soil for growing food
That's really interesting. What kind of food do you mainly use it to help grow?
The middle blocks I find it easier to get a hammer and hit them off. It shouldn’t take much to get the blocks off and it shouldn’t break the timber if you’re using it to make something out of it
Looks good. Does the ratio kind of depend on what materials you have on hand? Thanks
Usually the ratios are by eye. At the end of the day its all carbon that burns. So as long as you dont go too far ie. 75-100% coffee you should be ok I think. So If i had more sawdust than coffee then I'd just use up the coffee and not worry to much aboht waiting for more coffee etc...
So in summary use what you have amd as long as it binds together (paper mache effect) then it should be good. Thats my personal measure
@@RobTheFrugalist Ok, got it, thanks!
Thank you, great video. Im looking at making a mixture or sawdust and coffee.
Perfect let me know how you get on!
Nice video, will give that a go 👍
Let us know how you get on. Need tips shout.
I'm looking for cideos to fix my aeron remastered chair and unfortunately I'm only seeing videos for the classic version. By any chance, could you update your video title to include "aeron classic" for those like myself looking for aeron remastered videos in the future? It'll help us find the most accurate videos. Thank you!
I've never heard of the aeron remastered thanks for the tip
Changed
Thank you! My chair is now fixed 😊
So glad to hear!
What are they made from? Just coffee grounds? How long did you dry them for? Thanks!
Coffee sawdust and paper. Exactly how is here th-cam.com/video/D17NICyLXAI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fuBevboVYfbABFhy
The coffee bricks burn about 20% longer and 20% hotter than the sawdust bricks.
Thats what it is supposed to do but to be honest it wasnt my experience. But then I got that 20% info from a website selling coffee logs so...
@@RobTheFrugalist It's true though, I used to do the saw dust logs then I saw a video someone making coffee brick so I decided to make some and that 20% is in my experience, Honestly I think it's a little more, they also produce alot less smoke plus a weaker smell
@TheREALOC1972 interesting. How did you measure the heat output? For me the biggest gain is burning the coffee vs throwing it away...
@@RobTheFrugalist with a hand held thermomature that I use in my shop for cars and motorcyles, it goes up to 999 degrees.
@TheREALOC1972 nice. Hopefully not 999 while you were holding it as you might be singeing a few hairs
Wonderful!
Thank you! Cheers!
i had problem with that flapper - cleaning it didnt work. Then I noticed (after years of use) it developed little blisters. amazingly these tiny blisters where enough to break the silicon base seal.
It's amazing what you can observe when you take a close look!!!
thanks for video. recommend thermopro (tp357s) thermometers. they keep minute date for a year and you connect to them via bluetooth app. Theres a home assistant integration which allows you to bridge bluetooth to wifi and then have dashboards accessible anywhere in the world if you need to know the temperate of your UHF cupboard etc. data geek here
Well look at you Mr I can afford the more expensive loo roll😅
Haha yess! 3 ply luxury. Buy in bulk. Save in some areas to be in control of others
@ I love that reply 'Best reply in ever' right there
Good work
Thanks!
Concrete floors ! Flipping freezing!
That sounds very cold! What if you live in a sub zero temperature?
Thanks for that. Which one do you suggest for making briquet? Which one is superior in energy production and other factor to use for steam boiler in a factory? Thanks
Well I tell you at the end of the video. Your answer depends on your context though. What do you have more readily available? Coffee grounds or sawdust? All things being equal (literally) I dont think there is much difference. If you can vet coffee for free then mix it in upto 25 % that will make it go further. Tell me more about your situation?
@@RobTheFrugalist thanks for your swift response. I have both sawdust and coffee husk, not coffee ground. Which one more suitable for bulk production? Thanks once again!
@antenehmelake9641 I don't know. I suggest you do some experiments. Coffee husks might need processing. They may not stick together well. Can you grind them further ? But that's processing costs at this moment, I would guess at sawdust being better. However you should do a micro experiment if you can? Maybe try witha few husks in? But tio many may cause them to fall apart unless you can compress...
@@RobTheFrugalist Thanks. We have huge source of coffee husk and at the same time wood charcoal price is high
Im from a small town in South Georgia. i don’t understand the allure of living in a place where you can’t bend over between you and your neighbors house.
Hello to South Georgia. Totally get you! The proximity to London and gainful employment. I cannot yet afford a larger piece of land I am about a million short!
I’m thinking of using old oil from the deep fryer and cooking oil?
I'd avoid that because of the rancid risk, however if you think firelighters..then you are well on your way. I have a vid on that one th-cam.com/video/ZBCMoh2MynU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gUMfwSH7HRIqfK22
Thank you!!!! I fixed mine thanks to this
Great! Thats made my day!
I just did this but my baseboards are stained, not painted. After doing this i wasnt sure i liked how the foam and caulk looked against the wood stained wood but atleast i know i will be warm
Comfort over style! Unless you choose to paint the skirting. Can be a nice look but tricky and tedius to paint
Don't use glossy newsprint.
@@craigmatheson2736 worth avoiding
Why would I want to waste all that good bacon flavor for a fire rather than cooking with it? Fat=flavor!
Haha indeed. These are options though.
Great fix! I have a cple rooms that I can use this on in our 1920s house. I also think I have a scalpel of my dad's I can use. 😊
Perfect!
If you use paper towels to drain your bacon on, save them, and shove them into a toilet paper roll....works great
I can see how that can work nice!
They leave close lonely
Typo?
It amazes me the trouble and effort the people go too, to make fire. I personally like good old wood.
Well I'd agree if wood was universally available 100%. If you are in or near a city however its a little trickier.
Gets rid of the coffee grounds.
why? they burn 20% longer and 20% hotter than saw dust bricks and create 1/3 less smoke.
@@TheREALOC1972I think supersneak was saying that a positive of the coffee logs is that it uses coffee ground that would otherwise be wasted
@ wasted on what though? there's so many other things that coffee grounds can used for too.
You are burning paper with ink though, is it safe to burn?
Whilst content counts. Its generally fine to burn. I avoid glossy or photographs, (they wont pulp well anyway)
Why the coffee and not just the paper?
Coffee is a bit like wood 🪵 so burns longer than just paper. But main thing is you turn waste into heat.
If you want a cheap firestarter, just get a bag of 50 food warmer candles for 10 - 12 bucks.
How many fires would that do? The target to beat for buying firelighters is 3p/3 cents a firelighter (or 4-5 for these wax things)
@@RobTheFrugalist 50; don't forget to include opportunity cost on the time to make them. How much is an hour of your time worth?
@@kentalanlee ok. The example you gave was more expensive than 200 for 15... i am not making these. Though i was thinking of making one using bacon fat
@@RobTheFrugalist Bacon fat has the advantage that it smells like bacon when you throw it in there too! Mmmm....
I love this. Thank you for such an informative video. Love, prayers, and peace from Wyoming, usa❤❤❤
Glad you liked it. Blessings from London!
I’m having a problem where mine is only opening an inch or so, my kids have punched the lid down anytime they use it so I was thinking it’s a motor issue. I know the sensor isn’t the problem but have no clue what to fix or how, any suggestions is appreciated
The gear might have slipped or twisted. Open it up and take a look. With this model there should be two screws holding the gear in place and it all should align nicely. It might just need realigning or rescreing in. Watch out for loose screws if you give it a go.
@ I opened the gear box and the gears fell out, spent 45 minutes trying to reconfigure them to the way they were. Almost got it but then it the motor came off the wires where it was soldered. 🙂↕️🤦🏻♂️
@gabenolan6746 this is common. Resolder and you are done. You can see it happened to me in the vid too. Dont give up.
Hi, put your ventilation against the Pipe, it will take away the hot air from it to your room.
How doyou mean? Like blowing against it?
@ Hello Rob, against the hot stovepipe. You will take more energy from you stove for your room if you change the direction of the ventilation. The air will stream over hotter and bigger surface and will gain more temperature. I hope it is understandable, English is not my mother’s tongue.
Touching the pipe? My concern is it might get too hot and break /damage the circuit. I have it blowing across the pipe from the back of the stove unto the room...
@@RobTheFrugalist Perhaps we don ´t understand each other . I only mean the stream of air. 👋But you say, you do this already Good evening from Germany
@Thingssimplyfied thats fine. Send me a diagram at robthefrugalist@gmail.com of what you mean :D thanks for the comments!
You made this look like a piece of cake💪
Thanks though I am far from expert. The splitting axe is very good and there werent so many knots!
ever heard of "recoheat" ?? pretty expensive but if you love stove fans, you'll love one of those!!
Not but just checked. Interesting idea. Almost want to attach it to your radiators if you are going to pay that much.
tried this but my logs fall apart. thoughts anyone?
Things to try 1) either a bit more paper or more soaking with the paper. Thats whats holding it together when it dries. 2) more compression if you can but its almost certainly 1) but also try not to move it when its wet it will deffo easily fall apart then. I would also ask when does it fall apart? During process or after dried (deffo no prodding inbetween)
Are you in the UK? Just wondering how long these take ho dry out, especially in colder month's
Yes in UK. About 6 weeks sooner in the summer although I tend to leave them longer before burning. Always check to feel if they are dry and check using a moisture meter. I keep them in a warm airy location.
My question is once you have a fire and need to keep it going for days how does that work. It’s just the first couple hours?
Well, I've not needed to do that, so not an expert nor experienced in that. I'll guess at the answer would be based upon whether you are using it it at "full pelt" or slumbering it. You'd need a strategy to remove the ash and would need to do that safely while keeping the hot embers in the fire to avoid the ash levels getting too high. What kind of challenges do you have with this? I'd imaging you'd need a bit of a supply chain system going too, ensuring the firewood is surface dry by preloading a day's worth under cover if needed.
Comparing a felling axe to a splitting axe isn't a fair test really
That was my old axe. So they dont pretend to be the same, but then if you have one already do you need a splitting axe? Its an interesting reference point to see the differences.
I did use it to try to fell tree too about 15 years ago ... the tree needed the chainsaw :)
Cheers mate! You gave me the confidence to try fixing my sensor bin instead of throwing it away. The sensor was actually fine and thought I had a faulty gear but it turns out…when I opened it up something was blocking the gear mechanism from turning. So if in doubt, just open it up first to check what’s wrong before throwing it away!
Superb to hear, and well done you. In Japanese they call that "genchi genbutsu" meaning "go and see for yourself " a way of solving problems
I got the x27 a week ago. I've processed hundreds of pounds of wood so far. Nothing bad to say about it.
Great video. It fixed my can. Thanks so much!!
Glad it helped!
Star wars fan! Nice!
Also dropping a line to thank you for this video. My chair broke in EXACTLY the same way. I thought I'd have to replace the whole arm, but thanks to you it cost me $1.70 and about 5 minutes work. It had been broken for months and now it's good as new thanks to you! (I've had my chair for over 20 years!)
Great to hear. I think i bought mine second hand (but nearly new) in 2005 similar age
So a army of fans can heat a living room
It works, not amazingly but it works. Some better than others from what I hear in the forums.
Dude.. u really need to sort that mess in the garage
It's an uphill struggle . Maybe I'll do a vid on it.
Yep tried u fix mines different model different motor..1st attempt no luck just accomplished a deep clean. So next few days I'll have another crack at it. Its closing but not opening all yhe way up. I will win this fight..
Is it slamming shut when closing? If so it could just need the cog adjusting so the teeth are recalibrated.
How to adjust cog?@@RobTheFrugalist
@goulashigabor look at it in operation. Does it look properly aligned? Are both screws in? (Or however many are attaching to it) One obvious thing to sanity check as well is whether the batteries need changing!!!!
@@RobTheFrugalist thanks insanity is creeping, batts are new, hard to tell in operation as the motor is very different to yours(maxkon) older model. On mines there are around 5 wheel cogs inside the motor housing so its all trial and error. Anyways many thanks for sharing your video I am sure it helped a few in the world. Ps. i also had to resolder 2 wires so fragile.
@goulashigabor i am with you on the resoldering. But its satisfying when you get it back working. Good luck.
Why not shut all the air vents right down once the fire was established? They would have burned much slower and longer. I never have any air flow once the fires took off, shut it. All down for slow as possible burn.
Yup. But it wouldn't have been a fair burn. This is all experimental.
I use a reciprocating saw and a metal cutting blade to take apart pallets, good wood I build with, and broken wood becomes firewood.
Decent. That works well. Do you ever hit nails? ( I used a chainsaw once and went through a couple and wouldn't recommend that! ) I guess the bits still stuck together will burn longer anyhow. One of the plusses of the buster is if you wanted to keep all the whole bits ... (and do it fast)
One of the negatives of the buster is paying for it :D but if you do a lot its worth it.
