Baby deers don't have a scent and if they remain still, predators can't find them. But if you touch them predators may be able to find them via your scent.

Heartless?

The reason he said heartless trapper is because he's a trapper. Some people find that trapping animals is inhumane. I lost over 100 trees from beavers. I was so grateful that trappers came in and assisted. They did live trapping and brought them to a few neighboring ponds. I'm also a deer hunter, but I would have done the same as he did. Taking an animal for food is different than taking an animal for sport.

I had a tiny little mouse that could fit on a dime come right up to me in the day time and he was alone. Lil guy still lives with me to this day but he is pretty much at his expected age limit now. Raised some baby geese once that I found with no mama too. They got big and took off after a while but it was a lot of fun watching them grow. Deer are a different story though. I probably would have tried to find a place that has a pen for them or something to look after it. We have some places around where I am that keep deer in a giant area they can safely roam around in.
