It was probably an open winding, but don't remember doing much testing on the old motor before I through it away. Anyway, it was dead when voltage was applied directly to it.

Glad to hear that the video was useful. I think that the valve timing linkage only goes together one way.

Since I had installed a battery and decoder into the tender motor power was routed through the umbilical between the tender and the loco. I just inserted power from a variable bench power supply to the motor connections in the umbilical connector.

I am not aware of any Bachmann Climaxes that are just "DCC ready." That is, where the motor is already isolated from the electrical pickup. As far as I know Bachmann went from the bare bones model, with little internal wiring, to the DCC installed model. I bought the loco in the video on eBay 2-3 years ago where the seller specified that it was new and had factory installed DCC. To my knowledge there were no markings on the loco indicating that DCC was installed or that it was "DCC ready."

Do you know if it's the same gear for the old big haulers? I've got 2 Emmet Kelly Jr sets and both have split gears, I glued one of them and it worked for awhile but not eventually broke again

I am not sure I understand your question. At 7:24 you will see the two BlueRailDCC board DCC out wires connected to the Bachmann BATT terminals. That connection remains. The BRDCC board remains in the fuel bunker. There is no need to add any other wires.

No, actually plastic/nylon gears and metal/brass mesh well are very compatible and are used extensively in models. The many problem with with the Bachmann plastic gears is that they get brittle and crack or split and no longer have a tight gripe on the shaft on which they are mounted. Sometimes they are they are not mounted correctly during assembly and crack/split prematurely.

Thank you so much for this. I never could find the forum discussion about this, and this is a tremendous help! One tip: if you need to replace any of the gears in the box, they are available in the section for 2-8-0’s. I don’t know why they are not listed anywhere else (perhaps do that they can sell more motor/gearbox assemblies), but that’s where they are, and nowhere else.

They are 25mm x 7mm 12V 2Pin DC Ventilation Exhaust Cooling Fan bought on Amazon. Two for $10. I debated as to whether they are actually needed. Bachmann only included a cooling fan on the locos with built-in DCC. I doubt that fan cooling is actually needed, but included it to be on the safe side.

I’m on the AirWire system. I use the Convertr which wires directly into decoders. Many who have gotten the B’mann locos with DCC have removed all original electronics as things can be a tight squeeze. It’s definitely interesting how many electronics come with this locomotive.

Only one unit contains the decoder. MTH calls it Proto-Sound 3.0. The command protocol for this is proprietary but it can also operate in DCC mode. It also has the sound file, amplifier, and speaker (in the fuel tank). All this makes it the master unit. It sends info and commands via an umbilical to the other unit to control its motors, lights, smoke unit, etc. This makes it the slave unit. It does not have a sound system. It cannot operate independently. Of course, with the addition of battery and the Tam Valley receiver, the master cannot operate without the slave.

They are called Canyon Rock, supposedly from the Sonoma AZ area. We bought them in 1992 from KRC Rock, a landscaping rock company in San Diego

Sorry this replay is late. Just saw your question. Yes, the board will work in an SD70, but it has a current limiter that shuts down the loco if the current draws more than 1.2 amps for more than a few seconds. I get by with it on 4-axle locos pulling up to 15 cars or so. The SD70 is 6-axle and I suspect draws more current.
