Mac Mac Ultra 2024 - The Zama Zama Edition
How does one pick 10 minutes of highlights for an event that spans over 5 days and covers a combined rough total of 630km of trail adventures?
It's impossible.
Here is an idea of what to expect when signing up for the 200-mile, 100-mile, 50-mile, 46km, or 25km (Dog-friendly) races.
The Mac Mac Ultra has grown to become the Woodstock of Ultra Trail events in South Africa and a must-do for any adventurist. With the event only in its 5th year, it has already grown into a yearly pilgrimage for runners to celebrate life, race, and party.
Staying at Merry Pebbles at the race start and end is a fantastic idea to have a good time. You will be welcomed with open arms and most certainly make new friends.
I have now run all the distances with only the 200-mile to tick off. Race organizers Eloff and Frikkie designed challenging courses with a great balance of terrain that varies from very technical to runnable and back. The Mac Mac Ultra has lenient cut-off times that cater to everyone from the beginner to the International Elite. That being said, no distance is to be underestimated.
I can't wait to see everyone again next year. Hope to meet some new people as well, give me a shoutout if it will be your first year...I will look out for you and or put you in touch with people to have a great time.
I coach ultra-marathon runners and will coach anyone at a super (almost free) low price if this is your first 100 miler and you can show me your entry. I did the 100 miles twice now and it's glorious.
Thank you to every person who made this event so loving and special.
I always leave Mac Mac with new hope in my heart.
Hope that we can be Lekker and that people are in fact Lekker.
Stay Lekker! #ultrarunning

The Amatola is not South Africa's most challenging trail. The Grand Traverse is far more demanding.

Sounds like you're on the list for FKT for DGT. I agree with you. Maybe they or I should rather phrase it as "One of the toughest traditional 5-day hutted hiking trails" but that sounds slightly less cool. Anyway, both trails are tough and spectacular and it's a blessing for anyone to be in the mountains.

I am 100% on your side with this. Some of those ASA rules are silly. You worked for that medal, you paid entry, and you paid for your ASA licence. It's not like you cheated or ran with an expired licence. ASA needs to calm down. The fact that there is no reasoning behind it makes me want to assume it has to do with sponsor visibility.

    26. No athletes should be denied his prize money if he/she has entered a race, and allowed to start without an electronic chip, providing that the referees have spotted him/her at each and every check point. This implies that the athlete has run the entire race and won fairly. OPEN TO CHEATING. So my question is, did the race organisers do their job/duty (to follow the rules to have checkpoints) and why were you not spotted on the route and warned or disqualified as there was no so-called checkpoint along the route.

  • @HennieJHC
    @HennieJHC 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

The Great Race Debacle of 2024 (JUST A IMAGINARY STORY) "It all started when I decided to participate in a local race. I was feeling confident, ready to conquer the course and take home that coveted finisher's medal. Little did I know, the race organizers had other plans in mind". As I lined up at the starting line, I noticed something strange - a fellow runner only had one race number pinned to his shirt. "Must be a mistake," I thought to myself. But before I knew it, the race officials were disqualifying him for not having two race numbers. I couldn't believe it - all that training, all that preparation, wasted because of a silly technicality. NO, THEY DID IT JUST BEFORE THE FINISH LINE. "But that was just the beginning of the chaos that would ensue. As the race began, I quickly realized that something was off. Turns out, the route markers had been misplaced, leading runners in the wrong direction. People were getting lost left and right, wandering aimlessly through the streets in pursuit of the elusive finish line. To make matters worse, the race organizers had decided to cut off the course early, leaving many runners stranded without a clear path to the end. It was utter pandemonium, with racers frantically trying to navigate their way through the confusion. In the end, it was clear that those responsible for organizing the race were a bunch of incompetent buffoons. The whole event was a mess from start to finish, with more mishaps and mistakes than I could count. It was a comedy of errors, a spectacle of absurdity that left me questioning why I ever signed up in the first place. So, to all those morons who had a hand in planning this disastrous race - consider yourselves banned from organizing any future events for the next five years. And to my fellow runners who endured the madness with me, let's raise a glass to the absurdity of it all and hope that next time, things go a little bit smoother". COMRADES 2024.

Lekker man! They look really nice. How do the Xodus Ultras compare to the Peregrine? I was really happy with the peregrine 13 but they did not last as long as I hoped before getting a crack in the foam on the bottom of the shoe and allowing small rocks to get stuck in...

Thanks. My first pair of Saucony was peregrine but since then I have taken the Xodus every day for any long-distance trail run. I think they are probably in the same ballpark i.t.o. durability and mileage. (I'm hoping for a better turn over from the Ultra 3.

I agree with the race organiser guy below. I too organise two races on the Gauteng calendar and strongly believe that rules are rules and must be obeyed. Yes - in your case the officials were petty - in my opinion. Three strikes and you’re out should be applied to most athletes. I say most because the top ten runners and their coaches should know better. But in the end, here in South Africa as a whole - if everyone just got on and obeyed the rules, life would be that much easier.

    • @HennieJHC

Not sure I completely understand the "front and back" system, but once you accept it then unfortunately disqualification makes sense. Otherwise your second number could be used by someone else. Maybe a fine (2x the cost of a temp license for example) would be "better"? I have seen people sharing, at a race with decent prize money, and two A batch runners wearing one each, warming up and starting together. Didn't make sense at all.

What do you think is the reason for having two ASA numbers? To wear only one while you are given 2 for a reason, obviously. If you don't know what the reason is for 2 it's YOUR responsibility to find out. It happens many times before that a person gives the other number to another runner. It's sounds like you are not a novice to road running, you suppose to know the rules. Why only given a warning? Runners must know the rules. As a technical official working for many years on races we are there to see that runners obey the rules. I have been shout at, kicked at ect while only busy doing my job to enforce the rules you suppose to know. It doesn't matter if you are the first or last runner the rules apply to all. You don't have to close any of your rumbers, that's your choice, the rule states not to cover the sponsors.

The fact that you don’t care about rules that you voluntarily ignored, is all terrible. READ before you talk a lot of ‘nonsense’ read, read, read!!!!
