This channel to give insight into DCS World's Ka-50 "Black Shark". Also known as the Werewolf or Hokum, this special single seater attack helo has a lot of unknowns, partly from the small production run, partly lost in translation, but mostly because it's a different design - a single seater to what's always a job for 2 pilots.
Most of my content has been tested or experimented - it's not simply copied from another tutorial or written manual, but experimentation in DCS to find out how it actually works when you get your game on, understand what it's doing and why it's doing it and little ways you can get the most out of it.

Low-Altitude Precision Dive Bombing | DCS Ka-50 Black Shark III
ps. when you see me lasing/locking a target before going gunsight - in the level and dive bombing this isn't strictly necessary, and just there to get more information about the distance to target / scouting out the target area.
pps. the intro clip there's a massive auto-rotation descent happening first, purely to get to the right altitude so my dive later can be from level, or as you'll see a slight climb as I raise collective. Generally you're trying to avoid the dive itself being with a lower collective so you don't lose altitude too rapidly.

I’m at a loss. Whenever I try to manually input coordinates on the PVI-800 or designate a target point with the shkval the point is always vastly off. Also when I slave the shkval to any of these target points it turns to a completely different spot. I’ve made sure that the units of the ABRIS are correct. I know that the ABRIS, PVI-800 and shkval don’t necessarily communicate with each other, but in my case they are flat out contradicting each other. PVI-800 says that the coordinates are correct, ABRIS show’s target point in different location, and shkval slaves to an entirely different point than either of the ladder systems…
Hmmm... my first guess is that maybe your INU wasn't aligned well, or has drifted far off (distance + travel time + not having the doppler working makes it drift more). If alignment isn't a factor, might be the laser ranging was ambiguous (that shouldn't happen consistently though, but some stuff like the wires in the tv antennas have massive hitboxes).
Thanks - excellent videos. Wondering if having any deadzone at all makes sense when using anti-torque pedals with no spring and a dampener? I similarly have a "dead stick" cyclic - no springs (just clutch) and never use the trim button at all. Unfortunately find the controls a bit to sensitive like this, but beyond reducing Y sat, there doesn't seem to be anything for it?
It's had (a lot) of flight model changes since this video.... that said, DO use trim - it also sets some of the targets for SAS/SCAS/that stuff, i.e. the heading hold and attitude holds for example. As for pedals - depends how smooth & sensitive your pedals are near zero, and I guess how much pressure you need to apply before they start moving.
I have the issue of Nav Error and no Shkval Picture only on the Afghan map. Is there an issue or is it only me? On other maps everything is fine
Don't have Afghanistan, but might have read a post on a similar vein. Might be worth checking if the mission is set to before satellites were a thing (think DCS has that somewhere in '92, unsure) or if gps-type stuff is disabled on that mission. If it's neither of those I'm leaning towards bug.

Could you try playing KA 50 in War Thunder? To see if DCS strategies work there too.
uuugh, not that keen on WT tbh. From what I've seen (at least of the Ka-52 gameplay) the auto-radar mitigates some of the techniques you need around target acquisition/hiding etc. That said, I recall someone mentioning in my vid on shooting down SAMs in-flight that it was one of the big ways to troll in WT ;-)
@@volkvoort It's a shame you don't like WT, in my case I also prefer DCS, but currently my computer doesn't support it anymore. And I'm trying to apply your tips in WT, but playing in a chaotic environment like this game is very difficult. Thanks.

as you mentioned Banjo.. there's a vid about Su-25T CCRP level bombing use Shkval, WHY not Ka-50 CCRP since they have the same targeting computer, sight and bombs ❕️, all vid found for chopper bombing are level ones.
Interesting. Two differences though in that while the Shkval is similar, it's not identical as they adapted it further on the Shark was my understanding - also the computers behind it would have differences for the ballistics - might be the chopper's one has to do a bit for downwash and not just pure forward flight. But yeah, unfortunately I haven't seen and cool docs/info about it's use historically on the Shark.

3 years later and the Shark is still the best helicopter in the game. And it's amazing in VR today, you can literally kill by sight like a freaking superman.

Definitely on the long list of things to do, but think I'd first then need to do a bunch of testing on the INU/drift stuff which has a direct effect on start up.

Hello, i have this one question, how do i stop the mid air collisions of the 2 rotor blades ?
The most common reason is high speed + rapid change of direction + high barometric altitude. Study the table on your left in the cockpit. It's also described in the manual.
Sup Volk, new in DCS so got a question about game, can i control AA's like 2K22, ZSU-57-2, etc, from first person and not from map?
Sorry, obviously been AWOL or a while as things got busy. Not sure about those units specifically, but generally you can control AAA vehicles via Combined Arms looking from over-the-shoulder as it were or the scope. That said, Combined arms isn't any ARMA/Gunner Heat PC equivalent - maybe check out some vids on it first.

Volk, you are the KA-50 Master, I've ingested every video of yours at least twice now on the subject. However, am I nucking futz or what as I can't find any training from you specifically on the radios? 📻
Everything twice? Wow. I see the indoctrination has worked ;-) . You're right that I don't have any radio tutorials, other than touching on them in the data link tut maybe. I haven't revisted everything shark from the beginning - at least originally I only made a video if I felt that thing wasn't covered, or covered in enough depth before. Might do one later but it's not on the cards right now, unless I guess ED fixed it so radio works with SRS broadcasts in multiplayer and you could get a bearing on who's talking. One you switch with red rotaries, it has a standby mode for a "Guard" frequency receive only. The other you change mission pre-set channels and hold the white Tune button until the green light goes out. Or I guess release Tune early for some intermediate frequency. Then there's the ADF/Homing stuff which I think Pickinthatbanjo might have a video on.

I've had plans for ages on making new, updating videos replacing this one - both a slower pacing (not as extreme time-saving edits) and some new info, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Will see if I can update CC's on this, but might not be that soon. Some of my later videos 3rd/4th-ish I changed the editing.

The Vikhr caps on your Video does open and close 🤔 I thought it was a bug that they still look loaded as in BS 1 and 2 you could see through the empty Tube, but the Cap closes again after the Missile is fired
Saw a post I think on the ED forums with them saying that's how it's supposed to work (with the springloaded caps snapping shut afterward).

The specific one is part of the Black Shark Den squadron's skins, so, no one I can share outside the squadron ;-)
I stumbled upon the Ka-52 mod few days ago, and got hooked. Made me re-learn the Ka-50. Great video. Also love to see night ops in the Ka-50, a rare thing. I fly the Mi-24P most of the time, so Petro helps out a lot in night time.
Does Petro ID stuff at night as well as he does during the daytime?
@@volkvoort Nope, they appear as yellow, but turn red if they start firing. But normally its not an issue if you know you are in bad guy territory.

Well, maybe an increase in collective, with an accompanying pedal input to remain facing forwards would be the fastest to get out of the column of air, or rather have those columns no longer be exactly on the tips
