XR650R 200 Watt Stator Upgrade
Let's give the old XR some more juice. This thing can barely keep up with the lights, nevermind trying to charge a phone or make coffee. We'll be doing the simplest way of just tracing wires and plugging the stator in as we unplug the old. Also, beer.

Seat Concepts XR650R Install

Today we tackle something many XR650R owners complain about, the seat. Honda is one of the best if not THE best at making engines that are reliable and are actually built to last. The one thing Honda seems to always fail at is their seats. My Africa Twin was excruciating, and my BRP is the same. It's a 2X4 and a slippery one at that. So let's rip the old one off and staple us a new saddle so we...

If you are interested, Iused the same coil on my XR650R with a Trail Tech regulator. my USB charge/volt meter like yours says 13.1-13.2 volts idle and reved. My Klein digital multimeter says 13.7-13.85. Thanks for the videos!
Thx for the info, I am switching to the 200 watt way and retesting soon. I'm going to test at the battery with a multimeter just to make sure we're good. I did ride a whole weekend and voltage was always good, just not quite as high as expected. Thank for watching.
great video loved you r humour
Thx and thx for watching.
Appreciate the video. Gonna do this sometime this week.
Don't forget the Modelo. Thx
I hooked mine up the alternate 200 watt way you showed at the end. I have the trail tech reg/rec that is only good to 160 watts I think but I don’t plan on drawing that much anyway. Also, the trail tech has a screw that allows you turn up voltage. I didn’t see what reg/rec you had but it is probably the same one.
I think I am going to switch it as well. I know my Chinese voltmeter probably sucks but I feel like I should get 14 volts or at least in the 13's. I used a generic 2 wire rectifier/charger from Amazon, not exactly high end. I'll probably make a "short" and do a quick test on switching wiring.
@@fatfingergarage1I believe the reg/rec was set to max out at 12.5 or so by default. I turned it up 13.5 on my cr250 because the stator is only 40 watts. On my xr650r I measured it to be 12.5 or so, same as you, but it was constant so I didn’t bother adjusting it. Different battery chemistry requires different charging voltages so that is something to think about too.
@@bret44 I just checked my battery and it is max 13v so I am going to leave it as is for now. I will be changing the wiring for 200 watts but that's it. When this rectifier goes out I'll get a better one. I have a link to everything for my bike on Amazon, you can check it out if you need anyhing. No, I don't get commission. a.co/ct4oRVl

What heated grips did you put on? Is there a factory accessory for them?
Those are the stock heated grips, I added them after because they are controlled through the function buttons and the plug right in to the factory harness. There’s 5 levels and level 3 will burn your hands. I’m super happy with them.
@jaredgrow Merry Christmas and thank you for replying. Approximately what was the cost? I just purchased a used 22 African twin.
@@chiptaxfreeI don’t remember sorry. I think they’re around $150 now.
Hey i have a few questions man, anyway to reach out to you?
j.g.eqservices@gmail.com fire off an email
I`m sorry you did not have my Neway valve seat cutter kit. Valves may not leak the way you did them, but it`s not ideal. Grinding like you did is best after cutting valve seats, just a finishing touch. Then perform a leak test with gasoline or similar. I missed the part when you leak tested them and found them not leaking. New valves deserve a decent valve job. This is not the best way of doing it.
@@Euronasa yea I agree, this is not ideal and polishing took a really long time to get a complete seal, but it did eventually work. I actually do have a valve cutter but I closed my shop and have loads of specialty tools still packed up.
Doubt you’ll see this did you remove tusk rack to install that rack on it? How did you do it. I’m sad you didn’t show a tutorial has I can’t figure it out
@@thomasclark2262 it has giant washers for the under side. You just put the base of the box over the tusk plate and find wherever some holes line up, put a screw. The stock plate is way too small, it needs another plate to mount to.
Nice
this is very helpful! I think I might have an issue with my valve seals as I get oil out through the exhaust and out through the cylinderhead... But does seem I need a lot of tools
Other than the basics, torque wrench and spring compressor is about it. I will admit the spring pressure was pretty stiff, much stiffer than the last truck engine I did. I was surprised, I'm used to small Honda engines you can push the springs by hand. This was a very fun engine to work on. Thanks for watching.
@@fatfingergarage1 thanks! I will see if I can find one of those large spring compressor things!
That seat is ugly hahahaha
Thanks for the wicked video man! Super helpful.
Nice work! If im not mistaken XR650L dashboard also has a light for Neutral gear. Is it technically possible to make that neutral light work on the dash? I think XR650R doesn't have any neutral gear sensor right?
The whole engine is different on the two models so I don’t think so. I am about to change the stator, I’ll have a look when the cover is off.
How did you manage the led inside the tachometer. Would love one in mine
I took the whole speedometer assembly from the XR650L version. It came like that I just wired in the light bulb to the key switch power.
My XR650R has the same speedo but want to swap the light to led. I will have to open it up internally
@@royjani Gotcha, well that's easy. The whole cover comes off with maybe 3 screws on the bottom. Once the cover is off simply swap the bulb with an LED one. Keep in mind, you can not switch the blinker bulb as it will mess up the flashing, but any other can be switched. It's the same light bulb in a license plate light in your car. I went to auto parts store near home and just matched it up.
Thanks. That sounds easy
It's good ineed 650 r engine

I never even thought to put arm rests on the box. Imma use washers tho. And any suggestions to make the rear rack more sturdy besides lock tite n better bolts?
@@scaggit so far holding strong for over a year. I may replace the armrests and not cut them next time. They are more narrow than they need to be.
27:35 😂 "whatcha doing GODDAM" That was funny lol. Thanks for showing how to take it apart. I cant get my xt350 to start so im trying to clean the carb out.
I swear I tried to find that and cut it out. My daughter knew to be quiet while filming, the woman not so much. This is just a piece, this bike has a lot of problems, the long video will show a valve job and head rebuild. Currently waiting on parts, but I figured the carb could be it's own video. Thanks for watching, double thanks for comment.
Thanks for posting these. Your parts list was helpful. I am doing close to the same setup on my 650r. Nice to see it done successfully. I did the 650l speedo too. I will try to post some video too.
Glad to help,
If you switch to an led headlight then you will probably have enough power for your phone. You will need to run the headlight off dc though, using the rectifier.
@@bret44 I might go that route, currently the headlight is running dc but the problem is that the battery makes up the difference at low engine rpm but only maintains at high rpm. Never has enough juice to top off the battery. I have the new stator so there will be a stator upgrade video next.
@@fatfingergarage1Can’t go wrong with the ricky stator. I just put one in my cr250 with a trail tech regulator rectifier and it works perfectly.
@@fatfingergarage1just found your channel and subbed as I'm looking to do the same mods on my XR650R but wondering if you know of any company's making seat pans for XR650R? or anyone selling any old ones from wrecked bikes etc? You made a good job of putting the new seat on, though I'm surprised a standard staple gun had enough grunt to get the Staples in?? Obviously worked ok though? Ps I'd possibly be keen for your old original seat cover and id pay postage fees and some more money for your efforts and trouble to post if you still have it and wanted to sell it? Also regarding your road kit you hooked up in my country (New Zealand) we got these XR65OR bikes came out new with factory road kits installed and they never needed batteries. They just run straight off the stator so if you were wanting to save having to have a battery maybe I could help assist you with that too avoid the extra weight/cost etc? Mine runs all the standard factory incandescent indicator bulbs and factory headlight and taillight, brake lights etc off factory stator and works perfectly. Though if you look at the specs on the models we got in new Zealand and Australia etc, they came out with slightly stronger stators from factory than what the USA got for that reason. Another thing to be warned about is I've seen guys put much more powerful stators in there bikes in the USA and the wiring etc can't handle the extra power and one guys started melting and blew up his rectifier as well and he ended up switching back to original cause it kept blowing rectifiers etc. Yet it was not a Ricky stator brand it was some other brand that ran at 200 for memory. Just something I thought I'd share. Don't want to see you melt your wiring loom etc. something worth while keeping an eye on if you install. Thanks.
@@bush600r2 Thank you, I appreciate you. Seat pans probably only available used (eBay), Honda might have them still in production, but I haven't checked. I did consider making my kit all AC as it does work on AC or DC, but I wanted to upgrade some things later on and decided to go DC. Now I have a phone charger, maybe adding heated grips or something later. I did use much thicker wires on the dual sport wiring so I'm ok there. The staple gun was barely adequate, lot's of bent staples to replace, a pneumatic gun would have been better. Lastly, I do have all my original parts including gas tank, headlight, fairings, and now seat foam and cover. Not really planning on selling the parts, If I ever sell or need to put back to stock I want to have those available.
@@fatfingergarage1 Yes good idea to keep all the original parts as if you did decide to sell later down the line its those parts that make the bike valuable. These are becoming collectable bikes now and most enthusiasts want all the original parts. I'm always keeping mine to be able to change back to original too plus I like the look of it in original form. No unfortunately Honda sold out of there stock of seats, pans and covers all quite some time ago plus many other parts are starting to get scarce now too. I'm not a big electrical guy so it's something that's confusing to me, the electrical side so I'll be getting my auto electrical friend to help me with any thing I attempt there cause I don't want to stuff anything up and make it unreliable, but that sounds a great idea to put heavier wire through with your updated system you making. Mine runs DC too and I'm hoping mine will have enough power to run a phone charger as well with current stator which is one mod I'll be doing down the line, plus one other thing I'll possibly do is change to led light and indicators, brake lights etc too lower consumption only if needed though. I don't really need much ous except for a USB phone charger for GPS work. Heated grips would be nice but not sure I'll worry. And I don't really do much night riding on this bike so I can make do with the factory bic cigarette lighter powered light 😉. I'll go back through your older videos soon too and have a look as i have the same model accerbies tank to install except I got mine second hand and it didn't come with the brackets etc. You can buy the bracket/petcock kit but think I'll make up my own to save money plus I hear that the factory brackets aren't that strong so if you drop the bike the tank will possibly end up bending the radiators so it's something I'm going to look into in bracing it up better. Perhaps you might have done something when installing yours? I'll check out your video soon on that anyhow. Thanks for the reply mate and look forward to seeing your new videos on the rest of the build, looks like you know what your doing and making a good job of it 👍

Gotta be thorough.
I’m trying to do a stand alone light system on my 08 kx 450f right now. I plan on using a 5ah dewalt battery since my stator isn’t powerful enough and can’t find an upgraded option. I’m hoping it’s simple
Totally could work, I'd find an easy place to plug it in like from behind the headlight, make it so you can easily reach in to change. Then you could potentially even swap out batteries on the go. Definitely need an LED headlight but the rest is really the same. It's all LED on mine except the headlight. My bike is pretty wimpy at 55w stock, but I think enough for a couple extra LED's. Make sure to film it so other KX owners see your solution. Seems to be a need for your year, looks like 09 got a charge coil.
Are you going to plate the bike?
Yes, I’m doing dirt legal due to California never plating anything.
@@fatfingergarage1 they won’t let you plate in CA? Have you called the dmv?
@@danithaman4610 California stopped allowing plated dirtbikes in 2004, it’s a certain hell no from this state. The only way is out of state. Most people do Arizona. @@fatfingergarage1hows it holding up so far?
@@wizardz7938 still as good as day 1. I abuse it a lot, load it up, strap stuff all over it.
How is the box holding up? Will it mount to the Honda rack or is the Tusk base (or similar) required?
Honda rack isn't large enough, I'd put something for sure. I have really liked the Tusk rack with it's many strapping spots, but I don't know any better this is the first rack I've ever had. The box is as good as new and holding up great. I load it up with all my work stuff or fun stuff, it's rarely ever off the bike. Happy with everything still.
@jaredgrow, good to know. I am wrestling with the price that Honda wants for the OEM 58L top box. I want something with reasonable quality... but I am a cheap ass too
@@coolhandchunk If you are sure that you love top boxes then expensive quality is fine. If you aren't sure, it's better to risk a hundred or two instead of a grand. I tried a cheap top bag and realized I liked storage but not necessarily a bag so I wanted to try a box. Now I know I like a box so I might actually spring for a whole set of hard luggage. We'll see, these things are a never ending evolution.

What crash bar a highway peg are you using?
I have the Honda lower engine guard. Highway pegs were some garbage pegs from Amazon, they were terrible so I trashed them.
Did you do the heated grip add video you mention in video? I’m about to add OEM heated grips
No sorry, wish I did. It's pretty straight forward though, just plug and play really. The throttle side does have to fish into a tight spot so I used a really skinny and really long flat head screwdriver to put it in place. Heated grips are a game changer, now I have heated Corbin seat as well. I think the next video will be a new top box with arm rests. Couple weeks maybe.
Just installed one on my '72 Yamaha R5 350........works great, easy install
Great vid, so do we just yuck back the the now 3 wires coming from the harness?
Yuck? Is this misspelled? I think tuck back? I mounted the new regulator where the 3 wires in the back are. Zip tied anything loose looking.
Does it change back pressure? Apparently lack of back pressure can cause wear of the piston rings? I'm no mechanic, but this is what I'm told!
Not in any meaningful amount. The muffler has the backpressure flap still in it that's computer controlled so still functions normal. From what I can tell it's just a bit deeper sounding, not even by a lot.
