CM Videos is an educational channel that uses videos to help viewers create effective solutions to their computational modelling challenges. The channel features videos on many materials, computational modelling strategies and tricks and tricks about the use of computational modelling software. Also, lectures on different principles of computational modelling are delivered on the channel to help users understand the principles that drive computational modelling solutions.
The channel has two objectives: (1) to help as many people get into computational modelling irrespective of level of experience and exposure to computational modelling and (2) to offer effective solutions to computational modelling problems. To achieve the first goal, the channel creates contents that are pitched at a level that many users can engage with without assumptions made on level of expertise expected. For the later goal, effective ways of finding solutions are presented for advanced users.

Hi if i simulate a bending of sandwich how can i get stress strain curve in with set i selected step variables
Can you show a simulation of an impact test using a stress strain diagram?
Can i use the property of ductile damage with concrete or it just use with metal materials?
Thanks so much.
No worries! Happy to help out. Let me know if you have any questions!
Thank you Sir

Why is this guy explaining the ancient geometry of Swiss cheese?
Thank you for your response. I am currently developing a UMAT subroutine to predict the nonlinear behavior of materials. In part of the code, I need to solve a system of linear equations ‘Ax=B’. Initially, I used Fortran libraries such as LAPACK and PARDISO to solve the system. However, these libraries do not provide accurate solutions for the equation’s roots. In contrast, MATLAB computes these roots precisely. To address this, I established a connection between Fortran and MATLAB to calculate the equation’s roots within the Fortran code. Currently, the Fortran code runs without errors in the Visual Studio 2019 environment and produces results consistent with my previous MATLAB implementation. However, when I integrate the Fortran code into the UMAT subroutine, Abaqus cannot access MATLAB libraries during the analysis phase. To resolve this issue, I conducted extensive research and made modifications to the abq2024.bat, win86_64.env, and custom_v6.env files to define the path for MATLAB libraries in Abaqus. The MATLAB libraries required for execution are located in the following path: C:\Program Files\MATLAB\Matlab Version\extern\lib\win64\microsoft. I tried adding this path both through Windows environment variables and by defining it explicitly in the .env files of Abaqus. However, the error persists and is displayed as follows: error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol engopen referenced in function umat.R error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol mxcreatedoublematrix800 referenced in function umat.R error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol mxgetdoubles800 referenced in function umat.R error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol mxcopyreal8toptr800 referenced in function umat.R error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol engputvariable referenced in function umat.R error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol engevalstring referenced in function umat.R error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol enggetvariable referenced in function umat.R error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol mxcopyptrtoreal8800 referenced in function umat.R error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol mxdestroyarray800 referenced in function umat.R

Hello, I think this video can help you: th-cam.com/video/gCQzzF8Few8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KIzys71PZdDqOteg
hello Dr do you have any video explaining the analytical approach of this similar RVE model? want to do a comparision with my simulated results. thank you
Not, really, no video on comparing the analytical approach. This is relatively straightfoward and I did this in this publication of mine: doi.org/10.1016/j.commatsci.2012.12.036 This paper should give you the answer you want.
@ thank you Dr Let me check it out
Hello, Thank you for your helpful videos. How can I link Abaqus to external libraries?
Hello, thanks for the question. By external libraries, I assume you mean for example user-defined material subroutines, python libraries, etc. If that is the case, then this is not straightforward. It cannot be answered easily here. I will suggest you do your own research about this.

Hi, Thank you very much for the video. I have a question. When doing DOF, you gave 3 for Z tensile and 1 for X tensile. Why did this happen?
Yes, correct. It is ABAQUS style. Material reference frames are 123 when they align with global reference frame XYZ. I have set the model up so that this is the case in which case 1=X, 2=Y and 3=Z. If you orient different so that the fibre axis (currently Z) lines up with the X-axis, then you would have the fibre modulus as E11 as traditionally reported in literature. In the case here, my fibre axis is Z-axis so E33 would be equal to E11 and the two transverse directions i.e. Y- and X- axis becomes the 2- and 3-material axis leading to E22 and E33 as reported in literature.
The mode shapes along the path are interesting - but there are several points I would make. You are plotting magnitude, not value so each mode shape is distorted as all values are absolute. If you chose ux, or uy (whichever is the appropriate normal surface direction) it would be much more relatable. I would always emphasize to viewers that these modes are independent, they are not showing any kind of progressive collapse. Similarly the 'values' of the deflections are arbitrary as they are eigen vectors. That is often a source of misunderstanding and it's always worth emphasizing. I apologize if you made these points but I missed them! It is very neat functionality in abaqus - I am envious. It would be great to see this method for a nonlinear buckling progression. I really like your videos. I have done a bit of RVE work and this was very interesting. I also really like your experiments with necking trigger with FEA. I have tried many times to tell clients that with no flaw and no material softening it just wont happen - and it's not a software bug!! Looking forward to more!
I really like your good comments TonyABbeyFETraining. I agree with all of them. I know the message about modes are incomplete. I just put something together quickly for illustration and it could be better. I did not make any effort to justify the predictions with analytical values (especially for simple pillar models). If that was done, then it could be a first step to justify/verify the solution before attempting a complex system as a thin-walled cylinder (in 3D). Thanks for all the insights you gave. I will look at them more. As regards triggering necking, you are right. I really like that video but it does not seem to draw a lot of audience to it since the points made in it is a bit nuanced. I am happy that there another nerd in my community like me in these things. Thank you and of course I will check out your channel.
How could be done this for 3D loads? I need a parabolic interpolation of a pressure load along the span in a 3D rectangular wing, I have the pressure distribution at the ends of the wing and at the midline.
Hello, This is a good question. I think it can be done. You do a similar thing but just make sure you specify it as a surface (i.e. in terms of x and y values for example z = f(x,y)). The analytical fields can specify expression in terms of x and y. I have not tried it before but I think this is possible. Maybe in future I will explore this.
Hello Professor, It is a real lecture ! Unfortunately, this information is not conveyed in any school. Thank you for your efforts. Greetings from Turkey
Thanks
Thank you professor, good lesson!
Thanks
Dear Sir, The macroscopic modeling of nanocomposites requires a multiscale approach. In this context, we have successfully coupled the Representative Volume Element (RVE) with Finite Element Method (FEM) to solve a basic rectangular domain. I would like to explore the impact of nanocomposites on various complex structures. Can the same RVE-FEM approach be directly applied to these structures, or should the resulting properties from the RVE-FEM analysis be used as input parameters for more complex models?
Yes... you use RVE to generate properties for your complex geometry problem.
@@MichaelOkerekeSir, I further need a clarity on it. For example my structure is a honeycomb panel consisting of many cells. Direct honeycomb structure could be employed for RVE analysis? Or RVE properties from a simple rectangular domain should be utilized as input for bulk structures analysis? One more question is how the varying weight percentages of nanoparticles is defined in the matrix? Thank you for your time and consideration to this.

Hi I would like to ask you how to extract residual stress from a section in Abaqus from the ODB files? Thank you
You need to read the odd file with a python script and see stress in select elements.
Hello Dr. Okereke, I am simulating a tensile test of CFRP using a shell element. In my first approach, I fixed one end and applied shell edge load on the other but I ran into a convergence issue. Because of that in my second approach, I applied shell edge load on both ends. I created history o/p and requested RF over the nodes on the two end edges but I got zero reaction forces although the Sim. ran successfully. Can you please advise me to follow the right approach? I also want to plot a Force vs Displ. curve Best wishes
Use the approach I use in my model using a referral point note and kinematically link it to the edge. Apply your load on that node and extract your history output from that reference point node.
Thank you very much. Very helpful 👍
Thanks
Sir please make a video on plain woven bidirectional composite cylinder in Abaqus.
No idea of how to do so... sorry!
I think the displacement at failure is calculated wrong. It should be the product of the characteristic length and (plastic damage failure strain and plastic damage initiation strain). Per Abaqus keyword documentation: Data lines to specify damage evolution for TYPE=DISPLACEMENT, SOFTENING=LINEAR without the MIXED MODE BEHAVIOR and the RATE DEPENDENT parameters First line Effective total or plastic displacement at failure, measured from the time of damage initiation. (Units of L.)
You could be right... I need to check carefully... the principle remains though.
That great work video really, would you how to create anchor, deviator with a saddle-shape on T-beams?
Sorry can't help

Sir please make a video on plain woven (bidirectional) composite cylinder.
Sorry no idea of how to do this

really helpful
Glad you thought so!
Thank you for the video. I have a question: if I have a model meshed with shell, loaded in bending and I want to plot the two strains at the top and bottom of one element as a function of displacement, which is the procedure that you suggest ?
I will imagine the localised approach since you are targeting the strains at specific locations on the beam.
@MichaelOkereke thank you for your reply. But how could I choose section points, bottom and top of the shell e.g., and select them in history output so that i can plot their strain values. I'm thinking something like two strain gages fixed back to back in a given location of a panel
Thank you Dr. Michael .O what you did for us. can nano composite modeling by DIGIMAT???
I think you can, but I'm not sure, definitely, as I do not use it.

You're welcome
Hi sir first thank you so much for taking a positive responsibility for society to educate abaqus software. Sir I am doctoral student sir I am interested to know in this video tutorial why you didn't use anisotropic values for natural fibers?. Thank you
Thanks for the query. The fibre I used (E-glass) does not show anisotropic properties. If you want to use an anisotropic property for say carbon fibre, then by all means go ahead. You have to slect the right model for anisotropic properties modelling from ABAQUS material library.
Thanks for your great video I want to know how to access excel file? (I could not find in the CM Videos) I have a few questions: 1- Instead of corner nodes, is it possible to use a reference point? If it is possible to use RP, should we just use the RP history output? 2- Is it not necessary to use the net area of the material to calculate the stress? (I mean in this example the area = 100*100 - void area)
i do not believe the excel file was part of this. I have videos on the channel on pbcs and stress-strian which you can extract thhe files there.
