50/50 | Trail Running Film
An amateur runner documents his second attempt at earning a coveted trucker hat during the Squamish 50/50. Racers are required to cross the finish line of the 50-miler and 50-kilometre events on back-to-back days. "These won’t just be stylish, they’ll be the hardest earned hats around."
Recorded August 17-18, 2025 (GoPro Hero9 Black)
The Squamish 50 races take place on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) peoples.

    disagree with training. i did 6 weeks of 20 mile runs, prior long runs were 12-14 miles. 50 mile weeks in total when i spontaneously trained for a marathon. ran 744 pace for 44 miles on a partyl trialed path- mainly road and pavement, but a few pieces of trail, wasnt at race effort. if yu can run 10 you can run 50. highdistance gets too much respect. id rather go for a base/z2 40 miler than do 20 miles at marathon pace, i know which ones tougher.

    Nice film - I do a bit of running, mainly road work just for fitness, but since I have been doing a lot of fell walking over the past year, naturally thoughts turned to fell running. I have never run more than a half marathon distance before but am planning to run our Yorkshire Three Peaks in summer at 26 miles and 5200 ft (1585m) of climbing - I turned 60 last week so we'll see how that pans out! - What was the longest training run you did before doing the 50? :-)

    • @et2media
      @et2media ปีที่แล้ว

      I ran a 30km trail race on the same route a year earlier. Longest run during training was about the same - 30 km. The key is doing some long runs back to back on weekends (20 to 30 km). I got a great training plan from Ridgeline Athletics: www.ridgelineathletics.com/. It was really helpful.

      @@progbass56 Indeed, it is possible to keto-adapt and perform well in low to moderate intensity aerobic events for some athletes, and of course there is an advantage of not running out of your energy substrate (fat vs glycogen) but the topic of this video was reducing the sensation of perceived effort. The brain preferentially prefers carbohydrates. During exercise, the ingestion of carbohydrate does immediately reduce the sensation of perceived effort which can be a mental advantage when an athlete is trying to finish a long endurance event. The process of keto-adaptation is difficult from a perceived effort standpoint and athletes must be mentally strong to endure the transition. I imagine many of those athletes would not need a video like this :) I am happy to hear that you have had success with your lower carb diet, only a small percentage of athletes have been able to.

      @@louiseblais5252 Thanks for the reply. I know Zach Bitter does "Carb Cycling" so he is never quite depleted when he needs to make move. Seems a bit complicated. 🤔 I hope to never have another Bonk. Hope at least. Time will tell. Last 10 Miler, I did take a couple ozs of Gatorade a couple times. Thanks again for your reply. I'm just astonished more athletes have not Fat Adapted for both their performance and their long term health as in Halting Metabolic Disease. PS: Zach Bitter set a 100 Mike American Record as a low Carb athlete!
