Allentown was great in the 1960s, '70s, into the '80s. I reside 18 miles from center city, but I would shop in downtown A-town fairly often. When Hess's and Leh's left, the city went down. I haven't shopped there in 35 years!!

The only really decent part of Allentown is right by the arena and the west end. Theres a farmers market and some decent bars, breweries ect. Strange thing about Allentown is its made up of many ethnic groups yet the food scene is lame IMO with the exception of a few places. Theres very little reason to explore the city.

Out of abe i think easton is the coolest. Why? I hear you say, well from a perspective of whats the most fun place as far as restaurants bars a happening social city. I live in b and for sure theres great stuff here. Herberts type writer and electronic calculator store comes to mind . A type writer store in 2024!!! And the funhouse is a great bar for live original music. Theres various bars and such that are cool but easton just has better bars and restaurants and walking around stuff. Except for Herbert's and the fun house because those are 2 trully great places in Bethlehem. But point is come to abe and see. Theres a lot here to see n do. Its probably the last type writer store in North America how can you not check it out.

Last Passenger train out of Allentown to NYC was in 1961 as for Harrisburg and Philadelphia that was in 1979. Most Inner city or Suburb rail-lines are Electric either overhead Power or a 3rd Rail last option is Diesel. Lot of the Original trackage is owned and operated by Norfolk Southern or CSX or RJ Corman. Septa does own the trackage from Quakertown to Philly, but trying to leave Allentown to the Quakertown area by Rail will Never happen as a lot of the bridges and ballast would have to be rebuilt up to code as FRA standards plus all New Searchlights and Crossings would have to be installed, Not to mention getting approval of crossing "Preston Ln" at Desales University which the school owns that land, shows that's a pipe dream. The only trackage that will connect the Lehigh Valley area to NYC and Philly is in Scranton as Amtrak owns and operates trackage in that area. As of 2/7/2024 the track line in Scranton is still in talks of how-to run trackage route to station as everything else is Green for a Go.

I grew up in south Jersey and growing up, I only knew of Bethlehem because of the striking workers tape on the news (begging for gifts) and Allentown (Billy Joel song). Moved there when I met my husband and often felt I was in the Lost Valley (I grew up in the Delaware Valley). Happy we moved up to the Poconos!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is one of the biggest boondoggles in the Lehigh Valley. I haven't read the latest rail passenger study but my analysis from the preliminary study from 2010 demonstrates the nonsense of these alternative rail routes. Fourteen years have passed since the preliminary study by the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission. I doubt that the costs have decreased in the past 14 years. I'll check the 2024 figures for cost reductions. Creating a linkup to NJ Transit's terminus at High Bridge would cost at least $710 million in capital costs (2010 dollars), or $39 million per route mile. A new service terminal for commuter trains would have to be built. At least five train sets would have to be purchased. New signalization would have to be installed. New passenger stations would have to be built. The Bethlehem Township park-and-ride lot that you mentioned in your dream is not connected directly to any railroad tracks. Six miles of track would have to be laid and a bridge built across the Lehigh River to the Norfolk Southern mainline. Taking the park-and-ride into account, commuter travel would add maybe an half to the trip to Manhattan. Passenger fares for a projected 800 round-trip weekday commutes (2010 estimate by the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission) would cost $14.9 million annually, but fares would generate only $3.3 million. Someone would be left holding $11.6 million (2010 dollars) every year. You would pay for the match? Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton? How? Every property owner, even though who never visit Manhattan, would pay out of their own taxes. Buses are cheaper and can be purchased quickly (that obviously is not the case with high-capital, high-operation cost of commuter railroads.) You admitted this to yourself: Buses can be run quietly, have WiFi and depart starting in the early morning. Do you enjoy the click-clack when trains switch from track to track? A bit noisy, isn't it? Commuter trains must stop whenever the Norfolk Southern freight railway halts because of mechanical problems with locomotives or freight cars. Norfolk Southern owns much of the tracks in western New Jersey (which, by the way, is uphill; freight traffic is slower uphill). The commuter train system may have to install runaround tracks at appropriate locations to bypass a 2-mile stalled freight train. Assuming Norfolk Southern would be willing to sell its track to the commuter rail line, the cost would be exorbitant. Norfolk Southern never has been in a good mood when it comes to selling its railroad property. It has taken years for the City of Bethlehem to acquire a non-functional slice of NS property for the City's rails-to-trains project. Speaking of rails-to-trails, a new commuter service from Lansdale to Philadelphia via South Bethlehem, Hellertown and Lower Saucon would eliminate pedestrian and bicycle use. All new tracks and signal systems, using the old Reading Railroad, would have to be re-installed. And the commuter system would have to upgrade 20 miles of track between Lower Saucon and Telford. Mind you, I am not against railroads. My parents gave me a Lionel train set in 1959, and I've kept it ever since. I don't hate trains. I hate wasting money on projects that make no sense economically.

Frank, you are obviously quite knowledgeable and I appreciate your insight. I assume the reason these studies are done well before a decision is made is in order to reveal exactly what you are saying. As more and more people work from home, the need to commute to a facility or office in a metropolis like NYC becomes less urgent. And perhaps the buses fill the need. But I read about the study in the Morning Call and wanted to explore it further. Thanks for your well-researched insights.

Nice video, your fervor for your part of PA is appreciated, I also love all our history here in Lancaster and the Moravian influence in Lititz, PA. It looks like Allentown has cleaned up a bit since the last time I was in that area. Have you ever taken the German relatives to the Ephrata Cloisters in you guessed it Ephrata, PA, or the Hans Herr House in West Lampeter Twp? My roots are much more ScotsIrish than German; however, I have traced my Maternal side Germans to 1700 in York, County to a Georg Uhrig shortened to George Urey by his Son.

Several problems with living in Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania:....Every field is turning into a cookie cutter housing development.. The roads are still simple country roads where they should be four-lanes to handle the traffic which is horrendous. Local state parks are filled beyond capacity each weekend by the influx of New Jersey and New York tourists. Real estate prices are unbelievable despite the fact that values are up across the country, here they are asking for twice the money that real estate goes for in the center of the state. For $100K you might get an old trailer on a 3/4 acre lot .You better have a nice bank account or a very good job if you're moving here....And learn Spanish !!

I and my family moved to Orefield Pa 2 years and a few months ago from Long Island, NY. I asked a friend from Nazareth, what it's like here, like apple to pears? He said more like apples to pretzels. It's pretty here. But, for me it's been hard to get used to the pace of living. Especially work related, much slower. We came here for school for our son at Parkland High school. We are trying to take advantage of all the resources here. We have checked out many places in the valley, Camp Hill and Levittown. I miss the beaches and trains on Long Island, and the ease of getting to the City not the taxes. Will see. It's hard to negate the benefits of retiring here.

I am a Gen Xer. I grew up in Allentown first on Ferner Street in the old "Lexington Arms" now "Whispering Hills then on Idaho Street up from the SPCA. Thomas Jefferson, Dodd were great schools, walking to Mountainville bowling was awesome. Getting ice cream from Carvel, a hoagie from Lee's, groceries from ACME, clothes from Grants, playing in the old Hoffman junkyard before Kmart was built. I miss the great times that I had with Jamie, Lynette, Steve, Gary, Dan.... Good Humor truck still delivered to neighborhoods. Playing at Trout Creek Park, rafting, riding my bike through the water on the bike path. Swimming at Mack Pool. The 1970s Allentown was superb for a kid. To this day I miss Dr Salvadge on Emmaus Ave near Traubs. Dr Goldfarb was my superb opthamologist. Hamilton mall with covering was ok. Harolds furniture was great as was Falks near Dorney Park. Zandy's I think is still around. A place I ate as much as my beloved pizza place on the end of Moutainville shopping center next to where Kmart was. 😊

Best place in the Lehigh Valley Mall is Dunderbak's Market Cafe a True-life German restaurant that has been at its location longer than any other business in the Mall. more like 4miles of road and shops, 10 miles is from south mountain to eagle point 😂. Zephyr means West Wind and Whitehall mascot is a Owel, I know this because I went to Whitehall way back then. Whitehall is a Great Township to live in.

Just a quick question: was this video filmed a while ago or is this recent? I’m from Texas and it’s hot, humid and starting to get up into the upper 80s. Shorts weather and garden is growing like gangbusters. Is it still cold enough up there to need a hat and gloves? Cause I can’t quite wrap my head around that if you still need hat, gloves and coat in mid-May.

I can tell you it's Hot here now 70 degrees today as it will get hotter and hotter in the Lehigh Valley, this is definitely an older filmed video, it usually gets warm here by the first week of April and starts to get cold the last week of October if that helps
