Sporting Drives in Colorado with Uncle Dan
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 17 ก.พ. 2023
Here you can ride along some choice scenic Colorado roads in a slightly modified 2020 2 liter Mazda MX-5 ND Club on sporting drives with Uncle Dan. "Spirited driving!" "In Colorado! The landscape here looks different each time you look.
Stingerbug had 8,000 miles when I adopted, and the modifications were already there. Everyone wants to know about the EXHAUST. The muffler was replaced by twin pipes. The suspension is too ridged for stock. Koenig racing rims. Small things otherwise, like marker lights. I did wrap the leather steering wheel cover as well as modify the rear wind deflector myself.
It's all about having fun while keeping it safe. There is no racing or driving faster than line of sight and braking distance. Every time I leave the house, I at least see mule deer next to or crossing the road. We have elk in herds of up to 50 individuals, and lots of big horn sheep as well. But I think you'll find it quite exciting as well as a nice, safe cost-free tour.

Part 1. Some serious scenery in this one! A little drive down Ute Pass, around the north side of Pike's Peak, into an amazing open view over Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs. Then a tour through Garden of the Gods Park in Colorado Springs and then some views of Pike's Peak as we drive back up the Pass.

Part 3. A get together with friends, Bill and Manny, for a sports car drive through some great Colorado scenery and curves to have lunch, good conversation, to ogle each others car’s, as well as show them off. I’m afraid we caught traffic pretty quickly at each of the tight sections, but it was as still a good time.

Part 2. Autumn cruise with some friends who have a similar interest in sports cars, sport driving, and more specifically, MX-5 enthusiasts and owners. You’ll want to view Part 1 first, as we meet up, have some good Q and A’s about the cars and give them a good looking over. We then cruise rather sportingly to a nice restaurant, taking some less known roads through the Colorado Rocky Mountains. ...

Looks like Conifer. Maybe Deer Creek Canyon Road. I adore that drive!
Hi, nntp! I'm not keen on names but Deer Canyon Creek sounds familiar. This is going up to Cripple Creek. Are you in the area? I think I'm going to put this on "video." The cropping of the "shorts" makes it look all wrong. Thanks for watching! I'm sure you'll find more videos you like on this channel. Have fun and be safe!
The Miata is now the new windowless Chevy Van.😂
Lol! Hey! When were you planning on being in Colorado?

What the fuck is this pedo shit?
@@sandybunz69 Just comedy. Nothing pedo. A kid is anyone below the age of 40.
Just say no to Stephen King
Don't you just love it when you check the editing and spelling and you're satisfied with it all, you upload the video, watch it on the full screen and the first thing you notice is "Sinrise?" Just as good as thinking you're going slow enough to have the windows down and then hear the wind. :D Any rate, I want to let you all know that after catching some autumn "scenic" drives on video, Spirited Driving videos are coming! For those strictly interested in spirited driving, thank you for your patience.
Another amazing tour! Thanks for taking me along
@@ThomasSchall thanks! My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it. :) Thanks for watching, my friend.
amazing! Nice road, too. Finaly some road which doesn't look like a highway 😊😊 And the view is stunning
@@ThomasSchall Glad you liked it! As you can see, the flat face of the stone are facing the mountains and the Pleistocene ice sheet would have slide down over this spot and razed everything in its path. So these structures were exposed since 7,500 years ago. That’s very quick. Thanks for watching!
this is amazing- beautiful car, beautiful trees and mountains
@@gamemusicmeltingpot2192 Thanks! Be sure to catch the next videos of this episode. It gets better! Thank you for watching and your comment. Have fun and be safe!
Sorry about the lack of 4K video quality. Couldn't get it to load.
Very nice. The view toiwards the back offers a nice look at the cars. Not so much of your amazing landscape this time. Still great to see as it focuses more of the drivin aspect 👍
Nice colours and scenery. Impressing! And a nice sounding MX5 Are the car parks along the road for hikers?
Yes. In the "lower part" there is a hiking trail and the river, so down there are also people fishing.
Hi mate - found this video by pure chance but what a great day and what a great guy. Felt like I was on a drive with my dad again. Looking forwards to doing this too when I finally get out to pike's. Cheers, Ray.
Hi, Ray. Glad you liked this one. It's one of my favored drives, even though the curves are generally too blind to have much of a go. Thanks for viewing and for the very kind words. :) Have fun and be safe!
@@ampmap3150 sounds like you and your Pop were close. Same with me. I miss the skinny old man. :) I so wish they I could get him to drive this car over these roads. We take it in while we can, mate. I take it you’re in Oz? Feel free to ride along, any time. :)
Fun drive indeed Uncle, what a great scenery! Greetings from Melbourne, Australia
Heyhowyadoin, Jym??!! Glad you enjoyed it! This is a great drive; some sections are my favorite for spirited driving as well. This was just a lazy cruise. It's hard to catch a good time for autumn scenery as the temperatures and therefore foliage is different every 20 paces. Hope all is well Down Under. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! Might I suggest my video, "1,500 ft. altitude gain in 7 .25 miles?" It's a nice little sports car action.
Will you be at the reunion in Sonoma next week Uncle Dan?
@@MisterMiyada Hey, MisterMyada! I wish!! Not only would that be cool but a nice road trip to get there! Are you planning? If so, I hope you do a show covering it! You put together a nice show. I miss them. That is for watching!
@@SportingDrivesinColorado that’s the plan. I just got back from visiting Tennessee. Colorado is on my list! Hope to see you then.
@@MisterMiyada Let me know when! I’ll have a beer in the fridge and a mug frosting in the freezer! I need to look at your channel. I’ve been missing a lot of notifications lately.
@@SportingDrivesinColorado that would be a “me” problem. It’s been hard to post since I had a kid last year. But hope this reunion kicks a series of new content for me to release.
@@MisterMiyada congrats! And condolences. :D and I think you know what I mean! ;) Boy? Girl?
I like your videos, Uncle Dan, except when you are high-revving on the upshift, and suddenly skip a gear: it totally breaks the spell of that very nice engine howl. 😢
Hi, Francis. I only do that when I reach my desired speed. I always have a top speed in mind for each drive and each section. I base that on visual range and ability to spot dangers and respond to them and drive spiritedly below that range. :) Thank you for watching, posting a comment, and the nice words. My spirited drives on steep inclines are free of such shifting, "I think." "Psst! I have a bit of OCD myself and I think I know where you're coming from. The sudden change in intent of the engine does leave a vacant place in the ears." Have fun and be safe!
@@SportingDrivesinColorado I don’t believe I attain the level of OCD, but I strive to get close to it, so please humor me. 😂
i own a ND as well and i know uncle dan would definitely beat me in a race
Hi, Gibson! That would mean you know the speed on the spirited drive videos by the tach readings. I feel like I've been caught. lol what year and model is yours? Thanks for watching, and the kind words. :) hope you enjoyed the scenery in this one.
@@SportingDrivesinColorado I’m no snitch! It’s all jokes from me and I only say that because of how differently I drive my 2019 ND RF lol ! Hope all is well with you and keep doing your thing Uncle Dan 🤝🏾
@@gibsonisthename :D Oh. This one is sightseeing. Try my spirited drives for something more exciting.
Love these videos Dan. I live in the area and I’m blessed to drive the same wonderful roads. I think we both have a similar mentality of creating an environment to drive safely and respectfully, but still fun/sporting. Those Miatas are fantastic driving cars, long live the manuals! If I see you I’ll give a wave from my old blue Mustang!
Hey, Bhoulders. Thanks! I'm not very familiar with this drive once the road leaves the river. It is a good one. Please do wave! What year is your pony? Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment!
Great video as always! What a beautiful road to drive and enjoy! I'll go do the same with mine now but in Portugal! Have a great day
Hi Miguel! Glad you liked it! Hope you have a nice drive. ;) Thank you for watching and your comment. Be safe and have fun!
Nice road - and I just love the colours. Missing the action happens very often to me - of course, on two wheels it is even harder. I have to stopp, grab the camera and take the shot. I missed some very nice photos of two cranes who appeared just in front of my bike. They seem not to be bothered by me at all. So I took my time, took my camera, while the birds started to complain about the intruder (me) and slowly move away. By the time I was ready to shoot they were to far away. You, at least, got Mama Deer. I had to stopp the video, though, to find her. Quite good carmouflage! Good, you made a note on the video!
Dank! It was the baby, actually. But yes, they can be very difficult to see at times. Often to cross a road, the mama will stand in the middle of the road until she feels it is safe and then call the baby. They then run to get the baby to follow them. If they spend a lot of time crossing roads, they might stand there until cars approach then stop. Deer seem like stupid animals because they don't think when they panic, (great evasive strategy actually) But deer are quite intelligent creatures. Thank you for watching, my friend!
I was wanting to show the variation of autumn from 6,500 ft to 9,000 ft but was a bit interrupted.
Yes, as you said, very relaxing 😊😊 Nonetheless you again provided amazing views. But most important to comment: where's your coffee? 😂
I "love" those self-declared pedagogic drivers - in case of me on my bike they often are life-threatening
This was a short "Why not?" drive after dropping Nathan off at work. Could you hear the tire squeal on that tight turn? Funny, I hear it on the phone but not my bassy PC speakers.
@@ThomasSchall We have loads. Leaving town, nobody wants to do more than 50 mph, many even less. But that doesn't mean I won't have to drive 80 just to get around them and then they want to pass me back. They act as though I'm behaving very rudely, but I'm not the one forcing an alteration to their drive! I just pass and leave them alone. We have signs everywhere, "Left Lane for passing only." They think it's to drive alongside the slowest car.
@@SportingDrivesinColorado Yeah, I heard a tire squeal on the computer. That means the tire lost traction for a second, right?
@@dmitriy_zhekov :D ! Thanks for watching, dmitriy!!
Missing a lot of great colors, not having the full width of view as the full video.
wow, incredible
It's really sad the colors only last 2 weeks. However, the winter snow should have been on the ground about 3 weeks ago. Thanks again, Gamemusic!
Hey Uncle Dan! Can you share your camera mounting solution? I'm trying to figure something out so I can record and review my Autocross runs. Thanks! And for anyone else that comes across this vid and takes the trip to Cripple Creek yourself, there's a museum just outside of town that has a FANTASTIC view of the Rockies (you can see the building just to the right of the rearview at 3:41)
Hi, IceNFire. It's a GoPro 9 mounted just to the right of the release lever for the soft top. Just a standard GoPro sticky mounting. I'm not highly pleased with the sound on the 9, but it does have some other nice details and 4K. There is also a theater which usually does old school type theater, and the players are nuts! :D And the "bumpkin" looking casinos have 5-star chefs and very reasonably priced breakfasts and lunch. Thanks for watching, Ice!
@@SportingDrivesinColorado And thank you for allowing at least myself to relive the beautiful scenery! I'd love to take my own Miata up there, but unfortunately CO is a bit too far for a solo trip for the foreseeable future lol. I was hoping to avoid having to use an adhesive mount, but oh well, gotta pay to play!
this is the best POV ever im so glad I discovered this channel
Thanks, Game! Hopefully you view some of the more "sporting" drives as well. Thank you for watching and the nice comment! Be safe and have fun!
Platte River rd is one of my favorite spirited driving roads in the state. IDK if you have a video of that one yet Just discovered you have done that one! I'm binging your channel and definitely not stealing your style :)
@@antsonseadoos1287There are so many roads in the area with great potential, if only they were more isolated traffic wise. They really whittle it down to just a few doable roads. Don’t they? Where are you at? I’m near Woodland Park. Thanks for watching!
@@SportingDrivesinColorado I live in Evergreen. Definitely a shame all the fun backroads by my house have driveways up and down them. What a beautiful sunset.
@@mu-pv6mq Hello! It’s actually sunrise, but it was pretty. :) Thanks for watching and posting a comment.
Thanks for taking me along too your drive! Beautiful beginning autum colours. And of course the morning colours of the sky and how it illuminates the place. I wished you take a stopp hetr and there and take (and present) a photo. Pressing the pause-button isn't quite the same ... Quite a surprise on 9:02/9:03 😉plus - traffic jam in the other direction
I've taken my camera a few times. I'm usually in too much a hurry trying to beat the traffic. But that is a great piece of advice. Maybe I should choose some days specific for photography. I just watched one of yours. I guess that is a 10 course lute? Very nice!
@@SportingDrivesinColoradoI know the problem - I have to force myself into photostopps. Depending on what you watched it is either a 10-course or a 11-course lute
@@ThomasSchall Ah! 11.
Oh! I meant to say, The traffic at the end. I'm driving in the gap from the red light. There are a cluster of cars ahead, but they are moving. The other lane in the video was doing 5 to 10 mph, (sorry, no conversion). Friday through Monday traffic is heavy, but Saturday morning it is like this in the opposite lane, (people heading west). Sunday afternoon it's like this, people going home, east. otherwise, it's mixed both ways, all day. Except some 20 minutes at dawn. 30 minutes after sunrise and it's "BOOM!"
that place is beautiful
Thanks for watching, Wes! There are one, maybe 2 more videos from that morning, yet to be published. One a spirited drive, the earlier (recon drive) might be a bit dark. But keep your eye out for the spirited drive at least. ;)

Love it. No music, just the sound of the car, the road, and the wind.

It must be great to cruise empty scenic highways. Love the autumn colours! Everything looks more intense
@@ThomasSchall Hey, Thomas! It is nice, but it only last about 20 minutes at the most. :/ You saw the end :(
Watch for deer! Love the vid. Audio is great too. My channel is full of production. Videos are almost like a television show ... Im jealous.
Thanks, Cousin! Following the road is really a simple, relaxing flow. But the scanning the bushes and trees for deer, and worse can be pretty tedious at this pace, over this amount of time. As I'm sure you picture, it's sunrise and next to a creek. Half the deer in the area will be crossing the road this time of day. :D
You should consider one of these, Chuck. Much less $ than the BMW, and it's not a X, but bang for buck! I love it! And I average 40 MPG. Nobody can say it isn't practical. And I'm not really pushing it, redline is 7.5 You could really go nuts on a tight little road! ;)
This drive ranges from 9,000 to 10,013 ft altitude. Autumn was a bit late this year, (later every year), it usually peaks just before mid-September. Just a few years ago, we would have a frost every morning by now. Our peak autumn colors usually only last a week or so. At this altitude the only deciduous trees we have are aspens but even being all alone, they can still put on quite a show. Aspens sprout new trees from the roots. Some of the large groves are actually a solitary tree. Aspens also have a survival technique of changing for the seasons at different times and so this time of year and in the spring, you can tell which are the same tree and which are separate individuals by the color.
Awesome video. This is how I imagine the perfect day. Beautiful scenery, with the top down and some nice, twisty roads to cruise on.
It was a nice little scenic drive; glad you liked it. :) A couple more videos coming from this drive soon. There are some actual sporting drives in the video library, hopefully you'll look into them, they're all pretty scenic. Feel free to share. Thanks for watching and posting a comment!
Will be driving up Pikes Peak tomorrow in my ND. Are the stock tires going to be fine?
Up to the top? It's so crowded, I haven't been up there in a decade. I live at the base and it's pretty in the face from my mailbox. I would say you'll be fine. We've had light snow on the mountain, but they keep the road pretty clear, and the drive is pretty slow. Enjoy the trip! :) And thank you for watching!
