Say what you will about Mathew's Hill, but I adore Kristin's Marian. She plays her a lot stronger and less uptight than most versions - she doesn't need Harold Hill to bring her out of her shell, she'll come out on her own when he shows he's worthy. Case in point - 1:09 - the way she says "Good" so casually instead of shouting it while glaring the way Shirley Jones did? Makes it a much sicker burn.
Still not as good a singing voice as Shirley Jones, but quite good. The thing that gets me, though, is her quacking duck speaking voice, a curse of modern women who grow up talking the way they hear others speak....how do we ever get back to when women cultivated nicely modulated speaking voices with sparkling, bell like laughter as well.
they didn't use the same script as the first movie... they used the same script as the musical... if they were to be "original", as you say, then a bunch of other people would be upset that they weren't faithful to the Meredith Willson's book
Kinda amazing someone like Kristin, who people normally refer to only for her assets (if you know what i mean), being shown in such a fantastic light. people often overlook real talent for these reasons, and this is a solid reminder that looks really aren't everything.
i have to say, i like the 1962 version of "Goodnight, My Someone" a bit better than this one, simply because I like the moment between Marion and Amaryllis better than Kristen Chenoweth's somewhat pining attitude at the end of this version. She still put over the number beautifully though!
well, I've been forced to sit through a high school version of the music man for the past two days (and once more tomorrow), I have to say they do a better job at portraying the characters. Then again Live performances are generally somewhere above video I guess : P
I'm not particularly crazy about this version. I mean no offense to anyone, but the original had so much more energy. I like both Matthew and Kristin in most cases, but they are both miscast here. Robert Preston and Shirley Jones were much better. In fact, the only notable performance in my book is Victor Garber's.
I've seen both this version and the one with Robert Preston. (I like both) I've noticed quite a difference in the script between both. Which one follows the original 1957 script, or does neither? The lyrics of the songs appear to be the same, except for "Rock Island".
we live in different times now.. lol. actresses were a little different back then than they are now.. i actually think she doesn't have the face of a star.. (don't know how t describe it so don't ask lol) but she has an incredible voice. she should do disney voice overs. or has she already?
It is a fun school musical! Not too serious, but not goofy, either. We did it two years ago and I was Mama Paroo (my favorite part ever!). Kristen Chenoweth is a lovely Marian-more playful than Shirley Jones (she was much more uptight). But that Amaryllis is really awful, I'm sorry to say.
Amber Alice is so mean! She has no reasoning in what she says. She laughs at poor winthrop and calls her nice piano teacher an old maid! Then HUGS her!!!
It's not easy - acting with children, too. She does have a good chemistry with the youngsters. She has incredible relative pitch and near- perfect pitch.
Why do they remake classics? How do you compete with a cast like Shirley Jones, Robert Preston, Buddy Hackett, Ron Howard, Hermione Gingold, Pert Kelton, and Paul Ford? I like Mathew Broderick, but he just have the "shark" quality needed to pull this off.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Shirley Jones. I was head over heels for her in Oklahoma, and she will always be Laurey to me. But by golly, she was sorely lacking in Music Man! I don't think it was entirely her fault; I don't know whose brilliant idea it was to change the key on Marian's songs for that film so she's singing them lower than they should be. Not to mention CUTTING My White Knight...seriously? Whoever came up with those two things should have been slapped, and then fired from the project. There...was simply no excuse. I KNOW Shirley Jones can sing that high. I have HEARD Shirley Jones sing that high. Her take on Marian could have been something really amazing. But it wasn't. Not to me. Her acting, as far as I remember...was alright.
is kristen a natural blonde? i dont know why, but something about her skin tone as compared to her hair color here makes it look fake. or is she wearing a wig?
I still like the 1962 big-screen version (Warner Bros. filmed it) better than the 2003 TV-movie remake (Disney cooked it up). Even so, I thought the remake beat the original in only one place: I liked Megan Moniz' portrayal of Amaryllis better than the one Monique Vermont did in '62. (And I agree that they should've let Moniz sing alongside Kristin Chenoweth.)
I love Kristin, she's my hero! I like her more then Shirley Jones, just because i don't like constant vibrato in a voice like shirley has. But i like them both as actresses, for sure.
I love how she says "continue to ignore my counsel and advice" in The Music Man. They didn't nail it in whatever this is. Don't know why this straighr-to-vhs thing copied all the songs and dialogue from The Music Man. Lazy writing or something.
Don't get me wrong, Kristen Chenoweth is a wonderful singer, but this movie is a poor vehicle for her. The camera shots are weird and she needs to learn to lipsynch. The mother (learn to keep an accent) and the children are terrible in this and so is Prof. Hill. It's like they're trying to imitate the original movie but can't do it.
yea... she's very obviously wearing at least lip liner. you can't do a movie with out at least a little makeup... truuuusssttt me.... even the main character in the movie Iris had to wear a little makeup on camera! and seriously.. the old one is better
I dont like the costume choices for Marian in this one. They're a little weird. I think Kristen does well as Marian though not usually her style but she does it well. I think she was best as Lily st. Regis though
"Amber Alice" is really "Amaryllis." And I love Kristin Chenowith, but Matthew Broderick is terribly miscast in this show. Harold Hill needs to be a slick, fast, clever charmer. Broderick has the charm, but slick he's not... Maybe I'm just prejudiced because I love Robert Preston in this role so much, but Broderick just doesn't cut it for me...
no one can replace robert preston. no offense, i love matthew, but this is just so wrong for him.. that's why his part in the producers was so good for him, he's more of a different character. this is actually painful to watch.
i agree, but the person playing Mrs. Paroo isn't really a very good irish person! lol i have to play her in a play so i know how hard it is, but she isn't really singing! however i do LOVE this film!
Kristen is definitely amazing. She is such a talented lady, but this is a really horrible remake of the scene. The original movie was a masterpiece....they shouldn't have tampered with it.
@456nopa personally I think Kristin was miscast as well. Not that I don't *adore* her (because I do), but something about her doesn't add up to this role. She's too modern maybe?
Amarelys: *begins playing her piano piece*
Marian: *leaves to sing while Amarelys is still playing piano*
In the original play, she joins in with her singing
I wish kristin chenoweth was my piano teacher...
Kristin Chenoweth! The cutest little talented thing in the world!!
gosh I love Cheno
Say what you will about Mathew's Hill, but I adore Kristin's Marian. She plays her a lot stronger and less uptight than most versions - she doesn't need Harold Hill to bring her out of her shell, she'll come out on her own when he shows he's worthy.
Case in point - 1:09 - the way she says "Good" so casually instead of shouting it while glaring the way Shirley Jones did? Makes it a much sicker burn.
She has a lovely voice. And she has the uptight librarian thing down.
Kristin Chenoweth is amazing in every role and such a sweet lady. If you ever get the chance to I recommend going to see her live.
"Why does he get so mad just because he lisps?"
Maybe it's because your ass was just making fun of him! Duh! lol.
I played Amaryllis back in elementary school......I always felt so bad when I had to make fun of Winthrop :( haha
Is it me or is her "mother" roughly the same age as her?
And I've played that child :) lol
Memories...
Hey that's Ian from Shameless!!
HOLY CRAP Chenoweth is head and shoulders above. I thought she'd do good in this role but didn't expect this good!
her voice is just Angelic...
Her voice is beautiful she was really believable as Marion and she had good chemistry with Matthew in this movie
@@youtuuba I love Shirley Jones... Christine has a much better technique... and a MUCH stronger emotional content in her version...
She did the role well!
i’m playing marian, wish me luck!!
they didn't use the same script as the first movie... they used the same script as the musical... if they were to be "original", as you say, then a bunch of other people would be upset that they weren't faithful to the Meredith Willson's book
kristen is a great marion! Good voice for her
Can't believe that's Ian Gallagher from Shameless! Wow!
Bueller......Bueller.....
Classic...thats a memorable broderick moment
i love her in wicked she is so good
@Lukelr My god you people need to stop comparing the movies if you don't like this one don't freaking watch it
robert preston's version follows the original script nearly to the letter
@delidude1999 Robert Preston's version is the original! :)
I don't know if you can get it in stores. I got my DVD from Amazon if that helps.
Is this actually Chenoweth singing "Goodnight"?
5:45 This part made me cry. I'll admit that.
Odd boast.
BABY CAMERON MONAGHAN!
Cheno is my idol as an aspiring broadway soprano. Her voice is simply beautiful.
Kinda amazing someone like Kristin, who people normally refer to only for her assets (if you know what i mean), being shown in such a fantastic light.
people often overlook real talent for these reasons, and this is a solid reminder that looks really aren't everything.
@MrDanielBrisk Yeah, I agree. Kristin also has a lot more emotion, which I enjoy more.
she's glinda in Wicked
i have to say, i like the 1962 version of "Goodnight, My Someone" a bit better than this one, simply because I like the moment between Marion and Amaryllis better than Kristen Chenoweth's somewhat pining attitude at the end of this version. She still put over the number beautifully though!
omg!kristin soso amazing
Even though the original is amazing, I DO love Kristin Chenoweth's voice.
She absolutely nails this part! Her singing brings me to tears.
No. She doesn't.
Music Man is the best thing since sliced bread.
"Goodnight My Someone" = "Seventy-six Trombones", different time signatures. Also, Kristi Dawn is the bomb dot com!
well, I've been forced to sit through a high school version of the music man for the past two days (and once more tomorrow), I have to say they do a better job at portraying the characters. Then again Live performances are generally somewhere above video I guess : P
I totally have a girl crush on Kristen Chenowith. I love her so much! She sings this song perfectly.
I'm doing "Music Man Jr." in a theatre in Iowa.
The only reason im even watching this is cause of Kristen chenowith and Simba!
i sing goodnight my someone every night before i go to sleep
I wish more people would dress like this. Look at Kristin's outfit when she first meets Matthew. It's adorable!!!
Beautiful girl beautiful voice better than shirley
Does anyone else think that the last note she holds at the very end sounds like a car alarm?
Kristen Chenoweth is a national treasure. I'm so proud she and I both grew up in Oklahoma.
Kristen makes the part her own and adds more originality and personality than the original version.
What are you, an idiot or something? Anyone who can even toleride watching this travesty has never even seen The Music Man.
Thats not your sister kid, thats your mom! DUM DUM DUUUUUUM
watching/listening to her sing this and it sounding like this makes me thinkj of how much different her voice was in Wicked when she sang Popular
Did you drop your... NO.
Didn't we meet in.... NO!
Good grief, this is baaaaad....it's almost painful after the phenomenal performance in the original....
That little girl has absolutely no reservations. Once when I was a kid I told my Aunt she had yellow teeth. Kids... honestly, no verbal taps.
@20jesusfreak she played the original Galinda in it! lol
I've seen both this version and the one with Robert Preston. (I like both) I've noticed quite a difference in the script between both. Which one follows the original 1957 script, or does neither? The lyrics of the songs appear to be the same, except for "Rock Island".
this is basically my favorite part in this movie!!!
Sounds much better than Shirley Jones in the '62 movie.
Sorry, Shirley.
Kristen's voice is amazing!
thanks?
we live in different times now.. lol. actresses were a little different back then than they are now.. i actually think she doesn't have the face of a star.. (don't know how t describe it so don't ask lol) but she has an incredible voice. she should do disney voice overs. or has she already?

Kristen Chenoweth is a lovely Marian-more playful than Shirley Jones (she was much more uptight). But that Amaryllis is really awful, I'm sorry to say.
You know, I don't think Matthew Broderick is quite right for the role of Harold Hill, but Kristen Chenoweth is nothing short of perfect!
Amber Alice is so mean! She has no reasoning in what she says. She laughs at poor winthrop and calls her nice piano teacher an old maid! Then HUGS her!!!
9 people become old maids (like her)
Kristin Chenoweth is abslolutly amazing but, her voice is sooooo annoying except for when she sings, then its amazing again!
i had the lisp too, my old man usually made fun of my improper "S"
***** I had one as well. Its not too uncommon for kids under six to have a lisp.
Marian has a beautiful voice
wow..this brings me back..2003 my HS was doing this play and coincidentally right before opening night they aired it on television. sooo many memories
Ameryllis is going to grow up to be a mean girl.
It's not easy - acting with children, too. She does have a good chemistry with the youngsters. She has incredible relative pitch and near- perfect pitch.
kristen is such an awesome actress!!! i didn't know she was in this!
Why do they remake classics? How do you compete with a cast like Shirley Jones, Robert Preston, Buddy Hackett, Ron Howard, Hermione Gingold, Pert Kelton, and Paul Ford? I like Mathew Broderick, but he just have the "shark" quality needed to pull this off.

wait is this the original movie?
Auditioning for the part of Mrs. Paroo on Wednesday. Nervous as heck.
much better quality than part two. .__.
@Vaprogyne This one is just as good as the Original
good my someone love that song
is kristen a natural blonde? i dont know why, but something about her skin tone as compared to her hair color here makes it look fake. or is she wearing a wig?
hot damn that woman can sing.
i cant beilive she is in desendesnts
I still like the 1962 big-screen version (Warner Bros. filmed it) better than the 2003 TV-movie remake (Disney cooked it up). I play Marcellus in this play. I have to sing Shapoopi and they stuff me with pillows to make me look fat! :)
You all are forgetting Barbara Cook, the best Marian.
she was wonderful
I love Kristin, she's my hero! I like her more then Shirley Jones, just because i don't like constant vibrato in a voice like shirley has. But i like them both as actresses, for sure.
was that chick in wicked
marian's singing is outstanding
love her voice
KRISTIN CHENOWETH.

When did this version come out I never seen it before
2003
the acting is mostly bad, the costumes are weird and cheap looking and SOMEONE PLEASE fix Marrian's lipstick.... I prefer the older version MUCH more
Sorry, nothing against Mathew Broderick or Krisin Chenoweth:
But Robert Preston and Shirley Jones OWN this part...
Nothing but imitations...
Definitely...that little dance that Shirley Jones does in an attempt to dodge Robert Preston, and without missing a beat, is absolutely wonderful.
I dont like the costume choices for Marian in this one. They're a little weird. I think Kristen does well as Marian though not usually her style but she does it well. I think she was best as Lily st. Regis though
"kristin" not kristen
Ugh, it's sickening how they use almost the exect same script as the first movie. Originality please!
"Amber Alice" is really "Amaryllis." And I love Kristin Chenowith, but Matthew Broderick is terribly miscast in this show. Harold Hill needs to be a slick, fast, clever charmer.
