I just read the nicest snippet about Prince Phillip. I’m reading Maureen Callaghan’s book Ask Not: The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed . The chapter is describing the day of President Kennedy’s funeral, which was also John Jr’s third birthday . Leaders from around the world were at a reception after the funeral . Jackie Kennedy went up to the private residence where John’s birthday party was being held , to find Prince Phillip on the floor playing with John . John would have been the same age as Andrew at that time . I just thought how sweet that was , to play with a little boy who’d just lost his father .

She was a very strong lady during WWII and the public loved her for her stoic desire to stay in London during the bombings and would not exile to the country. When there were particularly bad bombings she would come out with the King and visit the communities encouraging people to not loose faith.

Hi Shauna. I went to school in Cheltenham and everytime the Queen Mother went to the Cheltenham races, the whole school would line up in our red school jumpers both sides of the road and wave to the Queen Mother as she drove past.
The car would slow down and she would wave to us all.
One year the car stopped and she got out to greet the headmistress, who curtsied. A very special occasion !

Two of my favorite stories about the Queen Mum: on one visit to a bombed area during the Blitz, a man remarked on her insensitivity in wearing finery amongst people who’d lost everything. She replied something like, “But if you came to visit me, you would wear your best, wouldn’t you?”
And she and Noel Coward were cronies. Hanging out together at a formal dinner, she noticed Noel eyeing up a dishy Guardsman and said, “Oh, Noel, I shouldn’t. They count them before they put them away.” She was a marvelous woman.

When I was a child, I used to feel annoyed because the newspapers (yes, I'm a boomer) would list celebrities who had that date for their birthday, but I only saw names of sports figures and others I didn't know. My mother finally learned that the late Queen Mother also had that birthday, which became my thought to console myself.
It's no end annoying that Madam Monteceto has the same date, too, however. I really don't want to make any link between the late Queen Mother and the self-dealing grumpy cloud on the edges of the Royal Family.

Thank you Shauna, that book was sheer delight. By and large the Queen Mum was hugely loved far and wide. Even my Granddad would talk about her with affection but he had no time for George V along with millions of returned servicemen after WW1. He would always say; "Ahhh the Queen Mum, now she's the pick of the bunch." He and my Grandmother, along with my dad and his siblings were living and working in Africa then because work was so scarce in England and their move to Africa at the end of WW1 (along with hundreds of others) had proved a good one. Their family home, and surrounding community in London was bombed flat by Hitler's henchmen. That was one of numerous areas Queen Elizabeth and King George VI visited! The King and Queen also refused to be evacuated to Canada during the Blitz but allowed 'the Princesses' to be taken to live in Windsor Castle whilst they remained in the boarded up Buckingham Palace....with their people.

One year there was a grand ball in the local town, and it was an occasion of ballgowns and tiaras and men in kilts. The Queen Mother arrived looking wonderful in a white gown embroidered with floral motifs and sparkly crystal decoration, wearing a fluffy white wrap (ermine?), a wonderful tiara and glittering with diamond jewellery. She turned, smiled and gave one of her special waves to the waiting crowd - it was a mesmerising moment, and I can still picture it.

"Got smashed on the tarmac." In the U.S., I have no idea if it is elsewhere, but in the U.S., one word for 'drunk' is 'smashed!' I had to listen again to make certain you weren't saying the Queen Mother got smashed on the tarmac!

I was late to join you with this reading of the last chapter, my sister was staying with me for a week.
Sad that this was the final chapter, I have really enjoyed this book.
Enjoy having an easier couple of weeks, you deserve it x

She still had 69 million, evidently. She was quite the character and was wonderful during the war years in London, choosing to stay at Buckingham Palace. I loved the story Shauna thank you❤

I think that’s debatable how much was actually set aside in a trust for the great-grandchildren. She didn’t have that kind of money in the 1990s. I believe it’s actually speculation only on how much of her personal funds were invested and how much each would receive.
