Your words just jolted me into the past and what journalists used to be. So true and I would go as far as to say this era of journalism is about being a mouthpiece for propaganda.
In truth, an honest, direct, and decent human as a journalist has always been a bit of an unusual beast. Mr. Craig is the antithesis of most of the press from the first "journalist" to today's "journalists."

What a great interview. Speaking about Germaine Greer reminds me that she did say before THE wedding, Meghan would last 2 years and do a runner. How right she was.
Shauna, what can I say but congratulations on a fabulous interview with Phil Craig. He’s a very likeable fellow with a great body of work, covering many important and historical events world wide. Just enjoyed it so much. Thank you so much. Loved Skippy and the Opera House lamp in the background 😊
This was so sad at the time and it took so long to find out the truth. According to "memorial at Liverpool's Anfield ground, Hillsborough's youngest victim was 10-year-old Jon-Paul Gilhooley, a cousin of the future Liverpool and England star, Steven Gerrard. The oldest was 67-year-old Gerard Baron, a retired postal worker." It make me think of the recent riots an the PM claiming that it was the far right.
I studied journalism during the early '80s, at which time the emphasis was to present the basic facts unless you were writing an editorial. But that was the case with every newspaper or news program on TV; the presenters were different people, but they told more or less the same story. Nowadays, since a majority of news is either online or via cable services, they are more driven by the algorithm, which emphasizes clickbait, where an emotional engagement can get the click. Facts took second place at best.
I remember the Hillsborough disaster vividly. I was cleaning up after my kids had finished lunch, and my husband had settled down to watch the football on TV. Still brings me to tears. Four months later we moved to Adelaide, South Australia. Congratulations on a very good interview, Shauna.
Shauna your guest interviews have been marvelous! I thoroughly enjoy them, I am learning so much about the recent history & cultures of the UK & Australia & all of the regions & the people that you speak about - so enjoyable - Thank you!!
Poor Dear Diana. So grateful you were "honest and fair" about Diana. I have the book but it's so much easier for me to use audible. Wish it would be available in audible. I would snap it up. 😊 Thank you for pushing back on Diana's detractors.
Phil is a good old fashioned, true journalist, rather than more like an influencer as you see often today, so looking forward to his new Diana book. He and Germain Greer would have had interesting conversations! I lived in London at the time of the Hillsborough disaster and it haunted me for years, so can imagine what it did to Phil being in the thick of it.

I just want to point out to those that are not in the UK , the riots were promoted by far right agitators mainly from outside of the UK , like Andrew Tate and space Karen ElonMusk , etc and possibly traceable back to Putin. The rioters were about a thousand people strong , many of whom are already in jail. Less than a week later. Most of whom already had criminal records for violent crime. They recruited thugs. Finally they stopped so quickly, as the population of the UK had had enough and turned up in the tens of thousands where trouble was expected and stood in front of possible areas of attack like Mosques or hotels where asylum seekers were being housed and saw off the rioters. A final point to make is that there is no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker. It is not illegal to try to seek asylum in the Uk. Once your case has been processed and if it fails then and only then do you become a failed asylum seeker and you are deported. If you go missing then , then and only then do you become an illegal asylum seeker. I did tell you Shauna once about quoting GB news and that their audience share is miniscule something like 0.3% of the UK share , it is funded by one of these far right external from the Uk billionaires and was complicit with trying to validate the riots as having a point. Which they didn’t, every single talking point has been traced back to externally funded far right agitators. They have been severely censured by most other serious media and have lost even more of their audience share.
Shauna what a great interviewer you are. This interviewing style is what’s missing in the media now. I could listen to you both talk for hours. Thank you.
Hillsborough was an accident waiting to happen, that there was nowhere for the fans to go in an overcrowding situation. Was a tragedy, and such an avoidable tragedy also.Current football stadium design has eliminated any such risk.

This interview confirms what I have always believed: 1, that Diana was under enormous pressure (and isolated) in going against the Firm: and, 2, she had to get her story out before word of her affair became public. My mom and also , Jacqueline Kennedy, criticized her for talking to Morton, but I always thought she had no choice. I also never believed she was mentally unbalanced. Someone under that much pressure would have completely unraveled if she were not a strong personality. I also don’t believe she was out to destroy the monarchy. She was fighting for self-preservation.

Your comment about bubbles is so true. What you watch on social media only generates more of the same. Finding a full view of the other side takes a fair amount of time. Brilliant interview Shauna. Such an interesting guy with so many amazing stories. His reporting was quite different from what we get today. Thank you Phil!
Thank you both. Can add a little more context to Hillsborough. By the late 1980's the hooligans had mostly moved away from causing trouble in stadiums, largely thanks to better policing and CCTV which helped with conviction rates. The trouble still occurred though, usually in and around the town or city centre before, during, and after the game. This meant that the police strategy tended to round people up and get them inside the stadium as quickly as possible, which was preferrable to having people roaming around in town, potentially looking for trouble. This made the problem worse. There have been several similar instances of this kind of thing occurring in football grounds over the years, but without the presumption that it's the fault of the people involved.
Wow, I'm new to this channel and I absolutely love it! Such interesting guests! I visited the Costa del sol in the mid 80s. I speak some Spanish so I learned the 1st thing I needed to do was let people know we were American, not English. The locals felt like the English were all "football hooligan " types.
Thanks Shauna, brilliant interview with Phil. I’m glad you gave us the heads-up about the interview as I managed to get a second hand copy of his Diana book from Amazon at a very reasonable price. I bet the price shoots up after this interview! It’s a shame it’s not available on kindle though.
Absolutely outstanding interview. I’m a retired United Flight Attendant and had a dear friend on flight 93. I had not seen his show until September of 2019. It was such an emotional program for me. How well the program respected but told first hand the reality of the families’ pain and loss, made this one of the most powerful stories of the horror of that day. Again, this was a most enjoyable interview. Congratulations to you Shauna for a job well done and a huge thank you for keeping your channel a real treat to watch. 💙🩵💜
I think all Shauna's interviews, especially those with authors, are in depth and very interesting. She does her homework before every interview, I think she must spend hours on research and reading their books, she is very eloquent, a good listener and knows how to keep us and the interviewee interested and involved. I could write more about her abilities, but I don't want to make her blush 😂... I think that it is very clear that I adore her and her work 🤣....
Well, that was delightful ! A lovely relaxed interview, where you let your guest speak freely, which allows the listener to feel that they are talking directly to them. I was disappointed when the conversation came to an end and hope Mr. Craig completes his book very soon. Then you can review it and bring him back to discuss.
What a great interview Shauna, Phil is so fascinating ...what a great dinner guest., I would be hanging off every word as I was with your interview. You have done it again an awesome interview. ❤👏👏

Awe Shauna what a fabulous interview/ chat. It was so warm & interesting. I felt like I was part of it. I love the way he called his wife Mrs Harris, what a darling man. I was a huge skippy fan. We use to play skippy as children. I think one of us would play the part of Skippy. Even now every time I hear that tutt tutt noise of Skip I think of those days. My faves apart from Skippy were the helicopter pilot Jerry and Clancy. Back in the day of the show we went to the fictional Waratah Park to The Hammonds and met Skippy. Well apparently one of them. He was wearing a diamond encrusted blue Collar. I would have been 6 at the time and a highlight of my early years. I couldn’t wait to get back from holidays to tell everyone and anyone. But seriously Shauna, fabulous interview as always. I love following your channel. Wendi xx
What a great episode, Shauna. 👍. Have you ever thought about writing a book because you have a knack of making everything sound exciting, interesting & in a lot of cases fun too & it's not just down to the people you have interviewed so far either, your gossips before bed are great to listen to as well. Thanks.
I loved his retelling of Germaine Greer watching Skippy to connect with the Australian landscape. I have a friend who has spent most of her working life overseas due to the opportunities she had there. I have a photo of her intently watching A Country Practice which I don't think she would have watched if she lived here full time.
@@thevintageread I'm loving your interview series too. I get to listen to people I know of, talk about their amazing lives and the books they have written or talking with other youtubers I follow.
Absolutely fabulous interview. Very interesting. I saw the documentary "The Flight that Fought Back" and it was brilliant - heart-rending but also uplifting. Amazing what people are capable of when determined to do that they can, even against such incredible odds - truly heroic. It was truly amazing and very impressive. I must look up/purchase books by Phil. I remember very well the deaths of all the 0:08 football fans. I saw the documentary that came out years later highlighting just what had really occurred. Most horrific "cockup". I had wanted to attend a football match when I lived in England, but my cousin and his UK friends refused to take me on the grounds it was too dangerous. This tragedy occurred just after I returned home to NZ. I was horrified. To this day, I wonder how you come to terms with losing anyone in such a turbulent way.
Loved flipper and skippy, some great memories. When you have been in Australia it is the difference in the colours. I wonder what Phil thinks of the BBC now, it is sad that they are no longer non bias

Brilliant interview Shauna. Such an interesting guy with so many amazing stories. His reporting was quite different from what we get today. Thank you Phil!
My pleasure Mrs F 😊
Thoroughly enjoyed that. Thanks Shauna.
So glad!
Happy Sunday Morning Shauna & Family. Loved The Chat With Phil Craig .❤❤❤.
Thank you 😊💕
Brilliant!!!! Wish it had been longer....Thank you xx
You’re welcome 😊
I remember the first color Flipper!!!
Welcome aboard!
Your interviews are so educational and entertaining as is your channel
That means a lot! Thanks 😊💗
Excellent interview!
I love 💓 your interviews and how you always ask pertinent questions. Your really good at it Thank you 🤗
Thanks Shauna, brilliant interview with Phil.
Thanks so much for the comment on the film - means a lot coming from you
I’m so sorry about your friend 💔 Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
What a fascinating life Phil has led. His stories are just wonderful and it was such a natural conversation. Thank you both. Joyful 😃!!!
Thanks for listening
Totally brilliant interview , I enjoyed it thoroughly . I've just realised I haven't viewed such an interesting , indepth interview in years . 😊
Really appreciate that! Thanks for being here.
Delightful interview. You have such a gift Shauna. Intelligent questions and a natural repartee. I could have listened for another hour at least.
Fabulous interview, Shauna. So interesting.
What a treat! Thank you, Shauna. I love your channel. You do excellent work.❤
Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching Marisa😊
Great interview. You are such a gem
Love Phil Craig!!!! Great interview, or should I say visit. Thanks Shauna.
Aw shucks!! 😊
Yes! Can’t wait to have him on again 😊
I agree!! 😊
That’s the plan!
What a great interview Shauna, Phil is so fascinating ...what a great dinner guest., I would be hanging off every word as I was with your interview. You have done it again an awesome interview. ❤👏👏
please read his other books so that by 2025!well all be thirsting for more, especially me since i remember those years vividly and would love to know his interpretation.
so proud of you Shauna, i was one of your first subscribers and loved your work. i feel vindicated by your success.
hugs
I am so grateful for the early support, thank you x
Wendi xx
I interviewed Lisa Goddard who played Clancy - she remembered being almost killed in a bushfire started by the crew!!
What a great episode, Shauna. 👍. Have you ever thought about writing a book because you have a knack of making everything sound exciting, interesting & in a lot of cases fun too & it's not just down to the people you have interviewed so far either, your gossips before bed are great to listen to as well. Thanks.
Marvellous, thank you both, and Skippy!
😂💗
Can’t stop singing the Skippy theme tune being Irish growing up
in the 80’s we got lots of Australia tv shows
I loved his retelling of Germaine Greer watching Skippy to connect with the Australian landscape. I have a friend who has spent most of her working life overseas due to the opportunities she had there. I have a photo of her intently watching A Country Practice which I don't think she would have watched if she lived here full time.
Yes it was very moving!
That’s so lovely to read Jan. Thanks so much 😊
Loved flipper and skippy, some great memories. When you have been in Australia it is the difference in the colours. I wonder what Phil thinks of the BBC now, it is sad that they are no longer non bias
