London Underground-A Stock & 59 Tube Stock on Metropolitan & Jubilee Lines 1986

  • See the A60 & 59 Stock's side by side on the Met & Jubilee Lines in February 1986. As LT were re-laying a junction at Neasden the Jubilee was worked in 2 parts, Stanmore-Wembley Park and Charing Cross-Willesden Green with the Met stopping at Neasden & Willesden to connect both halves. The southern end of the Jubilee was cut off so 59 Stock stabled at London Road Depot was used (the Bakerloo & Jubilee lines were worked as one with crews from all 4 depot's working both lines) as well as one 72 Stock stabled at Charing Cross. At this time the A60's were un-refurbished and a few still hadn't been converted to OPO and the Guards were still using the gangway in the rear car. Didn’t knew the mighty old 59 stock ran on weekends on the Jubilee line in 1986!
    I know you hear this a lot nowadays, but I really wish to be born earlier to witness trains of that era! I just found them more charming and unique than newer trains like the S stock! Also, much of the music I listen to is from that time (Smiths, The Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Chameleons, etc.).
    I can’t make time go backwards, so all I have left to do is to thank Soi for sharing his memories with us, the younger generations! Thank you! I am a proudly subscriber of you!

    The good days when rolling stock can help on other lines as long they were in good operational shape, compatible to run on those lines and they were not needed much on the lines they normally serve from service reductions.
    Guessing here the Jubilee line was cut in half from engineering works and so the Metropolitan line A Stock stopped at both Willesden Green and Neasden to connect the two halves together.
    The Metropolitan line does not normally stop between Finchley Road and Wembley Park.
    Fast Metropolitan line trains don't stop between Finchley Road and Harrow on the Hill.

    Back in the good old days when Metropolitan line ran semi fast and fast all day everyday.
    I'm guessing that Metropolitan line stopped at both Neasden and Willesden Green to connect both sides of the Jubilee line when engineering works was going on here.

    I find the underground network fascinating. The various points where trains can turn back make it quite flexible and certainly assist in recovering time during delays etc. I feel the national rail network and Network Rail could learn a thing or three from the underground system. How many routes have mile upon mile of dual tracks with no cross over or turn back point in the case of an incident or train failure, leading to whole routes or branches being closed to traffic, or rolling stock trapped should there be a problem.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Points and sidings cost money in maintainence, even the Underground is removing some. Mainlines tend to be longer so will not have so many too frequently but a do exist even if controlled by ground frame

  • @oludotunjohnshowemimo434
    @oludotunjohnshowemimo434 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Metropolitan line does not normally stop at Willesden Green and Neasden.
    Im assuming that the Metropolitan line A Stock stopped at both stations to help connect both halves of the Jubilee line as engineering works cut the line in half.
    The Metropolitan line was also affected as both Jubilee and Metropolitan lines run next to each other between Finchley Road and Wembley Park.
    Towards Central London, Jubilee line descends into deep tube tunnel whilst Metropolitan line also goes underground but below the surface in cut and cover, trench based tunnels with short open sections in between.

    Until I saw the comments I was convinced that was the Stanmore section of the Bakerloo line.
    In 1985 they had stopped using the 1959 stock in favour of the 1969 & 1979 stock.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This section of line was the Bakerloo until May 1979 when the Jubilee opened. The 59s seen here were from the Bakerloo (Bakerloo & Jubilee crews inter-worked both lines until March 1988 when the Jubilee went OPO) and were used on the Willesden-CX section due to engineering works at Neasden, for three Sunday's only. The Bakerloo had 59 stock from 1982 (after general service cuts across the network produced spare trains on the Northern) and ran them until around May 1989 when the last went back to the Northern. The Jubilee opened with all the 72MkII stock until around 1984 when the first 83 appeared. The last 83 was delivered by 1989 and the final 72 was transfered to the Bakerloo ready for its OPO conversion in November 1989.

      The white lights (marker lights) appearing on the rear is where the guard changed them over ready for the retrurn trip. It was the drivers job to change them over but was custom & practise for the guard to do his end at the end of a trip. I too have chnged them over ready just as the train arrived at the Elephant or Stanmore, or when pulling in to the reversing sidings at Wembley park, Harrow or Queens Park.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally no they didn't. 72 Mkll Stock worked on there until the last was transfered to the Bakerloo in 1989, alongside the 1983 Stock from about 1984 onwards. There wrer 3 Sundays in January/February 1986 when because of re-laying the junction at Neasden the Jubilee was cut in two. The Stanmore end ran as a shuttle to & from Wembley Park with trains that left Neasden Depot from the north end while the easy option for the Willesden Green-Charing X service was 59 Stock ex London Road Depot (+ 1 72 stabled at CX overnight). The Bakerloo and Jubilee lines were interworked so Queens Pk & Elephant crews worked the Jubilee and Neasden & Baker St (Jubilee Depot off pfm 10) crews worked the Bakerloo (but Neasden crews didn't go beyond Stonebridge Park) so there was no problem re stock knowledge using the 59s, they just had Bakerloo line diagrams instead of Jubilee ones! These shots were of the last time it happened in early Feb 86. It was the last time 59s & A60s worked alongside one another, having done so when the 59s were on the Picc and ran to Rayners & Uxbridge.
