- Arcane is one of the best reviewed video game adaptations of all time. It’s even won a prestigious Emmy award. So why is it ending?
The show’s co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Christian Linke from Riot Games talks to BBC Newsbeat's Andrew Rogers about why the second season will be the last, what champions might get their turn in the spotlight next, and whether Ella Purnell is the ultimate good luck charm.

I don't find it that hard to believe, this isn't as shocking as when I first saw somewhat recently some twitch streamers appearing in several tv news/serious programs/traditional media whatever you want to call it (destiny, hasan?) discussing serious topics (judging by the titles and platform they were in I didn't watch the videos themself) , I was like wtf is happening these guys are internet trolls what in world are they doing addressing a global audience. That for me was a way bigger stigma breakthrough than a "cartoonish series is for kids" becoming gradually a mature content mainstream.

I respect this decision to make a 2-season show with a specific story arc. Similar to "Gravity Falls" which was a fantastic show that told a cohesive and very entertaining story that could have dragged its life out for as long as commercially possible, but opted to limit itself to a very good pre-planned story arc that left the fans with a great story without overstaying its welcome.
It’s a two season arc for the ‘Arcane’ title but technically “the show” will continue because they’re going to continue partnering with Fortiche and using Arcane as a blueprint to explore the world of Runeterra and its characters.
@@punkyllama420 Hopefully they will tell the story of other parts of the world during the same timeline with other characters and cities. Just make a different title not Arcane.
@@sim.ulationkoyothe dev said himself that they planning more stories of runeterra TV shows/film in the future.
@@punkyllama420 based on what has been told, other stories are going to have their own series, which is fine. but i feel like they should have of kept it in the same series with multiple seasons focusing on different aspects of runeterra to make it a more cohesive place to watch these stories.
TRUE
Christian Linke is such an absolute madlad for dedicating years of his life to making Arcane a reality. I can't begin to imagine what it must feel ike for him that his video game adaptation is now considered one of the best shows of all time. And the founders of Riot Games are so awesome for taking the huge risks to foster a whole animation studio from the ground up in order to make this a reality. When I see the success of Arcane and the Fallout series and the failures of other adaptations I feel really lucky for choosing *these* franchises to be a fan of. LOL!
Great interview BBC!
Remember: he didn’t write arcane :)
@@kakonthebed he did for the most part together with Alex if you watch the documentary. You could be referring to the fact he hired professional writers to iron out the story.
Additionally, this is his first time ever professionally writing a story! Absolutely insane how well it turned out.
Yeah!!!!! I can't imagine it! Must feel amazing!!! His writing genius blows my mind!!!!
WOW that's impressive
Arcane not making onto the Guardians top 100 shows that year was a disgrace when it should have been in the top 5. Its a masterpiece of animated tv.
Agreed, and Guardian isn’t the only major TV review site guilty of not adding Arcane on the top 2021 tv list.
Tbf, though I don’t think many people expected it to be this good.
Not just animated t.v., but t.v. period!🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😍
Since the Arcane is a perfect story, as long as it ends fully answered, done and perfect, I am glad that Christian and his team had decided to stop where they felt it's the best. And as he said- more, different stories to come!
I really want the fall of shurima
@@acatwithwiskers9273me too. I'll love to see the conflict between nasus and renekton also xerath and azir.
@@masterg4036 As a non League player none of these words are familiar to me lol
@@myprofilepictureisafish Let me give you some context without spoiling anything relevant.
When arcane was announced many people were... confused? disappointment? There are many regions and really good stories but Piltover and Zaun is probably the least exciting to explore. Not because is bad but because all the others have so much more to offer in both scale and conflicts. Of course after Arcane was released all the doubt people had was shut down pretty quickly.
And off all the regions Shurima was the one that most people agreed would be the MOST exciting to see. The fall of Shurima story line is basically the fall of Egypt if the Egyptian empire had gods and cosmic horrors corrupting the land and the minds of the people.
I seriously doubt we will get this storyline soon, it probably would be one of the last ones just because of the size of the conflict. It is really cool tho.
@@drakesacrum8445 I really want to see that storyline explored in the MMO tbh. I think Bel'Veth as the living city would make for such a cool raid and easily tie into Freljord as well.
Good thing you stayed away from the Hollywood crap/mess. Better to have people who truly understand the characters, their lore, and the world of Runeterra than letting others who are clueless handle it.
Hollywood writers always think they can make the "source material" better. 😅
agreed. This is the kind of storywriting that AI or Hollywood can never mimic.
Arcane was made in china ..I heard
Riot was backed by a Chinese Corporation... so what? @@PikachuPolice
@@PikachuPolicewatched the documentaries, I don’t think they came to China once
What he says about game companies not out-sourcing to Hollywood is so true. They need to stop doing that.
This poor man. You can see in his eyes what making Arcane took out of him. He really wore the entire burden on his back and carried that show to what it is. Riot, and even other video game studios owe this man a huge thanks. For 1. Actually making it and making well. 2. Showing that media based on a video game can be done, and done well.
I owe Christian Linke many beers for restoring my faith in enjoying animations in my late 30's!
Andrew Rogers did a really good job here with the questions, pushing a little, but not too much, asking questions we want answered, but also ones we hadn't thought of. Either he's a big League fan or did good research and I respect that.
The interviewer's excitement is so obvious, especially when asking that last question, I love it
christian is so well spoken and hes carried so hard for so long if you know anything about him, we are so lucky to have someone like him in bringing this to life
Thank god, it's the end of Arcane, but not the end of him and his team making League shows
I've watched "Bridging the Rift -the making of Arcane" so much I feel I could've answered a lot of these questions myself 😅....I could listen to Christian & Alex talk all day with such passion for Arcane and the characters 🔥
Bridging the rift was a great show to feed my post arcane emptiness😂😂, now we are here, need to wait another month for the finale
it's just so inspiring, seeing someone pull it of and pull it of with passion and dedication like they did
I respect their choice to end it here SO MUCH. Thank you for telling a good story and not ruining it by dragging it out. Yeah, every good story will leave the audience wanting more - but, often, they do not actually want what they are wishing for.
Wholeheartedly disagree on the last part. I believe a truly good story will leave the audience completely satisfied, happy that this is the end, without a doubt. Its incredibly rare for a cliffhanger to be justified to me, so I’m really hoping they pulled it off, and to be fair it’s a part of a larger universe so any possible lingering questions may still be answered, that’s fine
@@hata6290: I think that satisfaction with the story can coexist with an impulsive desire for it to continue, or to revisit the setting or characters, or to check in on them later on in their lives. I think that a good story checks both boxes.
I love how confidently he says "there's no secret formula, it's just doing what everybody OBVIOUSLY wanted"! Cause yeah, if you know an IP, you are also a fan and you know what fans want from the story. It's probably the only way in which you can put yourself in the project and still have an amazing product, something The Witcher did not get I guess

For some reason I was thinking about Australia too.

blitz twitch renata zeri urgot

2) they already showed Ryze in season 1and the trailer showed a representation of Janna. Finally, any story featuring Viktor and Jayce will feature Blitz eventually.
animation style is the best I've seen for years.............OUTSTANDING WORK CAN'T WAIT FOR NOVEMBER IN UK

These guys are so inspirational for creativity, storytelling and passion of the work they do and love.
You can tell how passionate he is about his creation. Its no wonder the show is as successful as it is even reaching audiences beyond the video game fandom. Its such a relief that someone like him was a creator of the show, i dont believe we would have had such such a thorough and intelligent story telling that we got from arcane if he hadnt been involved. I wasnt a league fan or even played any video games prior to watching arcane BUT the impact it left on me was massive. Its not rocket science to see how thorough they were with the show. Cant wait for season 2 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Ella was definitely the most perfect casting choice they made
Christian is a gem and i wish all the best for him
The future of Fortiche in the animation sphere looks very bright and wonderful. Even though I'll miss Arcane like crazy once it ends, I'll tune in for the next story they tell. Whether that's under the title of Arcane s3, or something else, I'll watch it in anticipation.😊

How did they manage to hype me even more…
I freaking need the show now.

Arcane is the best thing to have ever graced my screen and season 2 is just about the only show I have been hype for for decades.
Linke and Yee are the kind of visionaries whose work I will continue to follow for the rest of my life/their career.
Thanks for this interview! Hearing Christian talk so passionate about the Characters is 🔥
Great to see the legendary showrunner and my favourite animated thing of *any* medium given some time to shine in my own country! Excellent interview. Very honest and engaging even though there's so much we know he can't say yet. November cannot come soon enough!
I am sad to see it ending but I am happy when shows choose when to stop. I hope it will bring closure to the story because of this decision. Thank you for your dedication! Can’t wait for Arcane and what comes next!
Amazing work guys. Loved the show. Shows artistry and impressive work put into it. ❤❤ Makes it stand out from all the mass produced stuff we get nowadays ❤❤❤
I like that arcane is ending since it opens up the story progression for the other characters. I’d love to see different lol champs have their stories be told. And who knows maybe at some points the plotpoints will be interconnected as well!
He alluded to a "brighter and more whimsical" region being one of the next adaptations... so a Yordle movie/series?
it's obviously Ionia
there's no way they gonna do Bandle City, because not even Riot game know what a Yordle actually is
They did have that one cinematic in the Yordle universe with Graves, and I don't think Ionia is their "whimsical" region, but we'll see
@@GrandpaJenk yeah and the only part of Bandle City that appear in that animated short is the portal, the rest of the short happen in Bilgewater.
Ionia might not be as "whimsical" as Bandle City, but its pretty darn close with all the spirits, souls , furry people and nature magic. Its also the most popular region. Its also heavily connected to Noxus, which mean its indirectly connected to Arcane.
No way man. No offense to yordles because they're awesome but I don't think many would want a series exclusively with yordles. It's more likely going to be Ionia.
Probably Ionia, maybe Jhin, zed and Shen? Noxian invasion? There are many options. He didn't mean the story after all so the story can still be pretty dark. Ionia is the most colorful region. Bandle City is also colorful and whimsical but it's another dimension so not really Runterra.
FRENCH TALENT MENTIONED 💥💥💥
YASS, official new regions and loads more content! So happy to hear this
Its good he mentioned not all the stories are gonna be dark and intense. Id like to imagine Bildgewater more like comedy and chaos
El dorado and pirates of the Caribbean basically
I think he was talking about the colors and asthetics if regions, not the story.
Bilgewater is pretty much entangled with a war on the shadow demons soooo...
@@tuvillo I guess it depends on the main cast? Twisted Fate and Graves? Comedy. Gangplank and Missfortune? Game of thrones but pirates. Pyke and Nautilus? Horror Film. Even then, characters like Illaoi can be serious and silly. The harrowing isn't a everyday occurrence so we can have a storyline without it.
@@drakesacrum8445 For sure. I just think that if they pick a region they'll do something similar to Arcane and look for the "main characters", and involve as many others as they can. In the case of Bilgewater I think it'd be weird to not have it play a role, even just passively. This is how these people live, after all.
Arcane is fantastic so glad i gave it a shot.
Thank you Alex & Christian for bringing this to life! Arcane is a game-changing show. 🙏
Thank god things went this way, its great they decided to stay away from such a predatory industry, Hollywood and the general mainstream media nowadays ruins everything they touch because of greed, i'm glad they decided to just make a 2 season series and that's it. They already gave Fortiche a big spotlight with the series which is very good, and will end the show in their own manner instead of being greedy and corporative.
"We come from the perspective of the audience" should be the default in media but sadly seems like 1 in a million rn
Well it is good to know that this isn't the end of seeing these characters on the big screen, maybe we will see Vi and Jinx again to! who knows
Arcane is probably one of the greatest artistic achievements of our generation.
For now its the best display of animation ever, with puss in boots 2 and spider-verse close by

9 years for 2 seasons.... actually I see he has a LotR picture hanging behind him, makes sense - Arcane and the LotR PJ trilogy are the two series that I feel got to that top tier level by spending the time, having the passion and dedication to make them right.

All jokes aside, words would not even begin to describe how overjoyed I'd be if future LoL shows explore Noxus and more specifically LeBlanc.
And by "explore" I mean fully dive into the character, show a back story, perhaps a more vulnerable side behind the mysterious almost legend-like figure.
Because to me, she's one of the most interesting characters in the entire game lore-wise, and yet she's barely touched upon... It's a real shame...
Azir
Every studio should listen to this guy.
I’m not personally the biggest fan of two season shows but I do respect that the creator doesn’t want to do what most Hollywood shows do which is overstay its welcome.
Two seasons is pretty short, because Arcane is a masterpiece. I'm very happy they don't try to milk the story with these characters for a decade and instead chose to tell a proper story, write real characters and focus on quality over quantity.
This was a great interview
Really intrigued in the future, there's so many different ways they can go with the different regions and tones of those - with characters like Morgana and Kayle, or Yasuo and Yone.
I would die happy if Riot finds a way to bring Hybrid Sound System into the music for season 2. Their music would fit well. A rare callout for DAOC, Christian is a real one.
I hope that we get to see Freljord in some of the future Arcane seasons... Imagine how cool an Volibaer plot would be
My whole body is ready for Arcane Ss2
This could mean so much…
Interviewer did a stellar job
Probably the best show ever made. No wonder we're reaching the main stream.
I'm hoping they do Ahri/Ionian-Noxus Wars/Yasuo etc! I'm so glad people gave this show a chance and realized there's a lot more to video games. But he said 'quirky' so YORDLES?! Edit: And Chris has a great point that just because it didn't exist means it shouldn't or doesn't have an audience. The fan base launched it the series but the storytelling, characters, narratives, music - EVERYTHING - is UNIVERSAL AND BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED THAT EVERYONE CAN CONNECT TO IT. THAT IS RARE! THAT IS ART!
Really solid interview, cool to see this on BBC
Thanks 🎉❤❤❤
About to watch the video but I think they want to expand the whole League of Legends universe but at the same time don't want Vi and Jinx to be the be all end all main characters which might make it harder to introduce other characters and worlds kind of like how the newer the Marvel hero, the harder it is for them to incorporate them in terms of us taking them seriously. Anyway, those are just my thoughts :)
They will always stay in their region so no that aint happening. Right now we have a intro to Yordles (bandle city “region”) with Heimerdinger and to Noxus from politics and the Medardas. We also have some references to the past with the runic wars and depending on how they do it with Ixtal for the gemstones. Singed will be relevant for a story around the noxus invasion to Ionia. Theres pretty much no references to Shurima, Demacia, the shadow isles, Bilgewater (this one would be amazing as a series), Freljord, Targon or Ionia (unless again u count singed). Theres a chance we only get introduced to some characters via movies instead of tv series because their stories dont involve that many other relevant characters, unlike Piltover and Zaun that has a massive density of characters to choose from and is also the best starting point for the general public into the universe.
@@rammycanales3784 that is true what you said, they will most likely stick to the same region with some of their next stories but fingers crossed that that, later down the line, they will explore others with new characters not related to the ones in this region to broaden the world
WE GOT ARCANE INTERVIEW AT BBC NEWS BEFORE GTA 6 🗣️🔥
Had to double check if this was the real BBC 😂
I expected Arcane to be in BBC, CNN, Fox, DW etc. The Best Show ever 😄 Patiently waiting for it's movie in NetFlix
How is BBC covering arcane ?
I can't lie I'm disappointed they didn't plan this show as an anthology, Arcane is an amazing name for a League Anthology series and there are so many good stories to be told in the universe. I respect the decision, but I feel like they were thinking kind of small term, they should have planned the arc ended it in 2 seasons like they planned and then go on to another character or set of characters.
I think that's what pretty much everyone thought they would do, me included. I had watched a few interviews with Christian in both English and German, he said somewhere that the Piltover/Zaun story would end after the 2nd season but it sounded like they would just keep the show going
Great interview
Him saying "We got every continent represented" in terms of music artistry is amazing. I hope in some of the future seasons we get to see Bts or a Bts member collab w Arcane too. Rap or singing, they can do it all and it would be so cool to see.
A series about Dark Age of Camelot would have been so exciting😍
BBC talking about Arcane was not on my list of things i thought would ever happen, but i guess its understandable because its so good 😂

Not to be confused with Arkane Studios.
Time to go to Dunwall again !
That studio is shutdown so no one is going to think of it anymore.
You mean the studio which made Dishonored?
They are probably located a few kilometers from the studio making Arcane, both are in Paris.
EDIT: Sorry, I just checked, Arkane is in France too, but in Lyon. Fortiche (Arcane) is in Paris
@@vilxxblack2472 Lyon is still breathing.

Still hella excited for Arcane s2 though! And this was a fun interview overall!
What comes next is probably either that Arcane will end with a proper set up for a new series based in Noxus, or we'll get another series based in an entirely different nation/culture of Runeterra that we haven't seen yet. But honestly I feel like they'd go the Noxus route because they need to have a sense of continuation from Arcane for the outsiders/newcomers who are not at all familiar with the game or the lore of LoL.
I mean. Demacia would do for different reasons. Arcane already touches the anti mage and rune wars themes so having another series that expands on it would be a good move. I'm also excited for Noxus tho. Can't wait for the everyone is Leblac revel in 60fps. They can also have a more comedy focus story with deep lore in bilgewater. I highly doubt any other region has a chance for now.
really wish we had more seasons so we could see ori, the rise of urgot, renata glasc etc
We will have more seasons!! Only two for Vi & Jinx‘ story though :(
They might come back to piltover and zaun to present these champions that haven't introduce in arcane and i hope we might see jinx, vi, caitlyn, jayce and viktor even if it's a cameo.
Did ya watch the video?
I didn't not expect to see Arcane being covered by BBC of all news networks.
Arcane is so good the writers realized they don't need more content because people will just rewatch the current.
If only Halo took arcane's approach
Yeah. Halo took the "Hollywood" approach, unlike Christian and Riot.
Or Overwatch😔
Because the current managment doesnt love the game... 343 kinda fcked up most of the times...
Still thinking about that time Peter Jackson almost made a Halo movie :(
15:17 OMG HE SAID IT!
I would love to see Urgot appear in this season, since Noxus has come to piltover, but I don't think they will introduce more characters than the already established ones.
I really really really hope that they do the next installment exploring Demacia with a teacher student dynamic between Garen and Poppy that follows poppy as the main character
Yeah but why not do all other stories under Arcane umbrella? It seems to be a quite general term for the world
Great interview!
I'm glad it is 2 seasons. They don't want to milk it to the point that it's The Simpsons. 2 seasons for a select set of characters is digestible and perfect.
