I’m a commercial and residential painter. I would recommend Vulkem polyurethane caulking around the boot . I find that silicone starts to deteriorate quickly. You guys are awesome!
ADD A SOAPSTONE ON TOP OF STOVE!!! It will provide mass and hold heat for disbursing after fire goes out in middle of night. There are several places online to buy soapstone, and stones that size are available in lots of locations as you travel. I recommend getting two small thick stones and CAREFULLY drill holes to match stove top bolt holes and bolt down so they can’t slide around, and to cut out so stones go around base of chimney. This way it will look like stove was designed for it and you won’t have to worry about stones sliding around. Don’t tighten bolts, instead use locking nuts and loctite because you don’t want stones cracking as stone and metals change as they heat and cool... Love this addition, wood stoves are AWESOME! (And dry heating beats the condensation of propane all day long). Love the Shiba Inu, mine died last month, she was seventeen...
I seriously LOVE that you did a wood stove in your Scamp. I have a wood stove in my home and there is something so primal about being able to heat your home from burning wood. I love it. Before we stopped travel full time in our 29 foot RV, we wanted to install a wood stove. Now we are building an off road teardrop to be able to get way out in the back country on shorter trips throughout the year.
I grew up using a wood burning stove in our home and love the smell. I can remember my mom putting a stew to cook all day on the stove. Our dog used to love sleeping behind it because it sat in the middle of the living room and dining room. This really brought up a lot of fond memories. Your stove is so cute. I bet the pup will love it this winter.
You cried when he cut the hole so cute. Is that a Dingo nice dog. You will be amazed how warm that stove will make your van, I'm going out on a limb here but that install is so well done you wont have to remove it when you travel, good idea removing the rail, just make sure the van is level when you cook.

I went out searching for a small stove for my truck camper a couple years ago. All I could find was some $4000 job that was way too expensive and not really a good fit. That cubic mini is perfect. Thank you!
Great! I have the same stove installed in a 16x12 cabin. Can throw out quite a bit of heat, but it can be damped down effectively too; it should make fo many a cozy night for you guys!
Mendo Myco What people may not realize (since no one has mentioned it) is that the stove needs a regular supply of wood... so that means getting up every few hours (like every 2,5 - 3 hrs) to add wood, IF you want it to heat the trailer all night.
This is going to work awesome! - I look forward to seeing it actually in action on a cold evening. I like the extra safety of being away from the wall and a nice heat reflector in back. One thing I was thinking about is ambers when you go to fill a stove that is burning hot. The two of you will need to be diligent with that.

I have just recently found your channel my husband and I are preparing to become full time RVing we have bought our RV and have been living in it we have had a few set backs dew to health but recently found out my health is stable and it’s safe for me to begin our journey one of our last things to do was install a wood stove as we want to also start becoming off grid as much as possible we will never be able to be completely off grid as I’m on oxygen but our RV has a generator and we will be getting solar panels you’re channel gives me hope that this is all possible we both enjoy watching your videos looking forward to more
Nice, have mine in an 18" tt. After about 10 hot fires the smell is pretty much gone. Love it but that smell does suck at first. I've also started using the cotton ball petroleum gell method of fire starters. Works great.
Any new wood stove should have a minimum of one burn Outdoors before installation to avoid any of noxious fumes I did that with my inside stove before installation, and so glad that I did.
I installed my cubic mini grizzly stove in my finally finished vintage off grid 28 foot Avion by myself exactly the same way a year and half ago. Almost exactly the same way. Nice video
Visiting the Colorado Rocky Mountains in colder weather, I like it. Installed a larger wood heater in a camper, used a lot of the fireplace rated sheet stainless steel from Lowe's to create a fire safe area for the heater. I know you'll inspect the rubber flute seal on top of the Scamp regularly, especially in summer, they get brittle and crack over time for variety of reasons.

pretty sweet I almost bought a scamp, built a tiny house instead. almost got a lil griz stove too ended up going with a englander full size 500-1200 sq ft. Nice video!
We use a Sierra wood stove to heat our entire house, and I couldn't imagine using anything else. While I don't (yet!) have a camper, I dearly want one, and I see them as land-roving sailboats. I cant get over how much the stoves are! Wow! We use propane and for the last two years it's been ok but I'd love to have a second choice of heat to choose from. Our forced hot air propane furnace works really well but its thirsty all the time.

Thinking some brick around the stove would radiate the heat back out after fire has died down. Or some smooth river rocks around it that way you don't have to keep the weight in the camper. If you heard this already sorry for the redundancy.
Wow! Had no idea you could do such a thing. The only heat (aside from those that come with small furnaces) are some little electric space heaters and Mr. Heater (which I think is propane--could be wrong). The little wood stove is amazing.
Saw 2 videos on this exact stove on the "Tiny House Prepper" channel - one was on the install in their trailer and the other was about tweaks they made with piping after using it a while.

That is very cool. I had a scamp once and met a lady with a converted short disability bus with a stove. I lived in time shares and they wouldn’t allow a stove - everyone had rubber roofs

I did wonder how well your winter in Colorado was going to go without any heat. I follow a Finnish couple who have installed a similar stove in their camper van. Seems to work well.

HI just watched the video and that is really cool. I had an idea, why not adhere a thin layer of soapstone to the back and bottom. May help with preserving heat. Just a thought.
A few bits of kind advice - use local wood wherever you are just as you would with campfire wood, it minimizes invasive species damage. If you want to find less expensive wood, ask around to the locals. You might get a discount if you buy more than just a little bundle for making a campfire with. - you can get a heat powered wood stove fan that sits on top of your stove and as it heats up the fan blade spins, circulating the warm air from your stove. They run on just the heat of the stove. This will minimize hot and cold spots in your home. - using a mix of green and seasoned (dry) wood will make your fire last a little longer. I grew up with a barrel stove that heated our whole house. There is a learning curve here, but don't worry, you'll get the hang of it soon enough. - in winter, especially with a wood stove, the air gets really dry. Dry enough to give you nosebleeds. Keep a tea kettle of water on the stove to prevent this and get one of those humidity gauges cuz you really don't want there to be too much moisture in the air either. Thanks for making this vid!
We just installed the Cubic Mini in our Airstream. Love it so far. We did go with the double wall 3 inch Duravent. Time will tell if that was the way to go. :)
@@andreab5865 It’s the only choice if you want the double wall flu pipe. It’s worked fine for us. I would try and have a straight up & down however. Less cleaning.
clean your chimney pipe once a month if you use it a lot. very important . chimney fire is hotter than 400 degrees. 👍 small pipes in cold weather build up creosote easy. 👍 happy camping. ☺

When it comes to stoves, ideally you want to arrange for a cold air intake, ie an air intake on the side or the bottom of the vehicle, so the stove can draw its combustion air straight from the outside, and then exhaust the smoke through the chimney. Doing that means the stove doesn't draw air from the inside of the space, and minimizes air movement towards the stove. Without a cold air intake, the stove takes inside air to fuel the combustion - that's not a hazard or anything, but it means that the furthest corner from the stove will be much cooler than the air near the stove, because there will be constant low speed airflow from the furthest corner towards the stove, instead of the warm air circulating throughout the trailer. You may want to put a quiet low noise 12 volt fan above the stove to blow air along either the front or the side of the camper to force the air to circulate around the van.
Croft, you are exactly correct. Exterior combustion air is the most effective and safest method. It will also reduce possible CO2 or Carbon monoxide safety concerns. For the fan, there are units available that contain a thermal dielectric material, the fan sits in top of the stove and rotates with no electrical requirement like a 12 v battery.
The advantage of not drawing in cold air directly from outside for the combustion is that it will help pull out moisture from inside of the small space. Every time you breathe out you're expelling moisture through your breath and that small of a space, two people put out quite a bit of humidity which can condensation on the windows and then cause mold issues.
@Derek Post I kind of disagree, and I've read of people who experienced it in a van. They had no cold air intake, so the stove used the inside air, and by definition that means air flowing towards the stove and then out the chimney. Since the air next to the wall is going to be cooler than the air next to the stove, this means a constant slow flow of cold air from the sides towards the stove. But yes, fans to circulate the air will largely alleviate the issue, I'm sure.
I saw another video from a 'van dweller' who used a marine stove (Dickinson, I think) that has a double walled stovepipe, to take in outside air in through the outside ring and exhaust through the middle pipe. It was a propane stove. I think I've seen others that use wood or wood pellets.
I had a Cubic Mini in my small old RV, and I never removed it for travel. The only thing I did for travel was to remove the exterior pipe, and install a metal cap which snapped in, so there was only about 3 or 4 inches left above the roof. I had an old gym bag which I stored the 24" pipe in, which fit under my bed.
Super cool!! You might want to research Dicor self leveling roof sealant for on top of the silicone seal where you had to screw it in, and around the edge where it meets your roof. It provides a far superior seal than the silicone caulking. I do not know how hot that area will get but you can always get the stove going and check it with a thermometer and get with Dicor and see if their product can withstand the heat generated in that area. Best of luck wish we could instal one in our RV. Enjoy.
I k ow you may never see this, but use kaowool for around the flue pipe. Kaowool is used to insulate steel plant furnaces. You can have a tprck on one side and your hand on the other and be fine.
Loving all you do as always best of luck with the stove. Not being from the states I didn't realize what a cult following Scamp trailers had been on their factory website I did like the 19-foot fifth wheel with the loft bedroom even though fifth wheel trailers are very rare in the UK. You also have fiberglass Oliver trailers which are very similar to the scamp. The nearest in construction in the Uk is fiberglass Freedom caravans from Poland. Those boots are silicone, actually, and have a remarkably long lifespan. Far better than rubber.

I love my cubic Grizzly. Only issue was that the railing came slightly bent. I assumed when shipped across country. Still a rocking stove.

These guys already installed the recommended double wall pipe, and they use a short and straight pipe, so they shouldn't develop a creosote problem.

That is very cool. I had a scamp once and met a lady with a converted short disability bus with a stove. I lived in time shares and they wouldn’t allow a stove - everyone had rubber roofs

Excited for this - I have planned from the beginning to eventually put one of these in my build - and since my van is a fiberglass shell, I'm interested in seeing what you do for the the install in your fiberglass Scamp!
Tip- have someone run a shop vac near the blade while you are cutting or drilling the fiberglass, to capture the dust!
I did wonder how well your winter in Colorado was going to go without any heat. I follow a Finnish couple who have installed a similar stove in their camper van. Seems to work well.
Hello , congratulations to being a wood stove camper old school warm and cozy , now after you install a fire extinguisher , it will be an extra bonus to install a carbon monoxide detector if you have one all ready check your power source make sure its working ,and if you all ready know all this , just be aware the folks that watch you’re videos care about you which is the best thing ,ok so all the best enjoy be safe trucker Kelly :)

HI just watched the video and that is really cool. I had an idea, why not adhere a thin layer of soapstone to the back and bottom. May help with preserving heat. Just a thought.
A few bits of kind advice
- use local wood wherever you are just as you would with campfire wood, it minimizes invasive species damage. If you want to find less expensive wood, ask around to the locals. You might get a discount if you buy more than just a little bundle for making a campfire with.
- you can get a heat powered wood stove fan that sits on top of your stove and as it heats up the fan blade spins, circulating the warm air from your stove. They run on just the heat of the stove. This will minimize hot and cold spots in your home.
- using a mix of green and seasoned (dry) wood will make your fire last a little longer. I grew up with a barrel stove that heated our whole house. There is a learning curve here, but don't worry, you'll get the hang of it soon enough.
- in winter, especially with a wood stove, the air gets really dry. Dry enough to give you nosebleeds. Keep a tea kettle of water on the stove to prevent this and get one of those humidity gauges cuz you really don't want there to be too much moisture in the air either.

How do you seal pipe while trailering ? What goes on top of pipe when using..rain cap ? Thanks for your info on stove install.

We just installed the Cubic Mini in our Airstream. Love it so far. We did go with the double wall 3 inch Duravent. Time will tell if that was the way to go. :)
Was the Duravent a good choice?
@@andreab5865 It’s the only choice if you want the double wall flu pipe. It’s worked fine for us. I would try and have a straight up & down however. Less cleaning.

clean your chimney pipe once a month if you use it a lot. very important . chimney fire is hotter than 400 degrees. 👍 small pipes in cold weather build up creosote easy. 👍 happy camping. ☺

When it comes to stoves, ideally you want to arrange for a cold air intake, ie an air intake on the side or the bottom of the vehicle, so the stove can draw its combustion air straight from the outside, and then exhaust the smoke through the chimney. Doing that means the stove doesn't draw air from the inside of the space, and minimizes air movement towards the stove. Without a cold air intake, the stove takes inside air to fuel the combustion - that's not a hazard or anything, but it means that the furthest corner from the stove will be much cooler than the air near the stove, because there will be constant low speed airflow from the furthest corner towards the stove, instead of the warm air circulating throughout the trailer. You may want to put a quiet low noise 12 volt fan above the stove to blow air along either the front or the side of the camper to force the air to circulate around the van.
Croft, you are exactly correct. Exterior combustion air is the most effective and safest method. It will also reduce possible CO2 or Carbon monoxide safety concerns. For the fan, there are units available that contain a thermal dielectric material, the fan sits in top of the stove and rotates with no electrical requirement like a 12 v battery.

The advantage of not drawing in cold air directly from outside for the combustion is that it will help pull out moisture from inside of the small space. Every time you breathe out you're expelling moisture through your breath and that small of a space, two people put out quite a bit of humidity which can condensation on the windows and then cause mold issues.
@Derek Post I kind of disagree, and I've read of people who experienced it in a van. They had no cold air intake, so the stove used the inside air, and by definition that means air flowing towards the stove and then out the chimney. Since the air next to the wall is going to be cooler than the air next to the stove, this means a constant slow flow of cold air from the sides towards the stove. But yes, fans to circulate the air will largely alleviate the issue, I'm sure.
I saw another video from a 'van dweller' who used a marine stove (Dickinson, I think) that has a double walled stovepipe, to take in outside air in through the outside ring and exhaust through the middle pipe. It was a propane stove. I think I've seen others that use wood or wood pellets.

I had a Cubic Mini in my small old RV, and I never removed it for travel. The only thing I did for travel was to remove the exterior pipe, and install a metal cap which snapped in, so there was only about 3 or 4 inches left above the roof. I had an old gym bag which I stored the 24" pipe in, which fit under my bed.
Super cool!! You might want to research Dicor self leveling roof sealant for on top of the silicone seal where you had to screw it in, and around the edge where it meets your roof. It provides a far superior seal than the silicone caulking. I do not know how hot that area will get but you can always get the stove going and check it with a thermometer and get with Dicor and see if their product can withstand the heat generated in that area. Best of luck wish we could instal one in our RV. Enjoy.

I k ow you may never see this, but use kaowool for around the flue pipe. Kaowool is used to insulate steel plant furnaces. You can have a tprck on one side and your hand on the other and be fine.

Loving all you do as always best of luck with the stove. Not being from the states I didn't realize what a cult following Scamp trailers had been on their factory website I did like the 19-foot fifth wheel with the loft bedroom even though fifth wheel trailers are very rare in the UK. You also have fiberglass Oliver trailers which are very similar to the scamp. The nearest in construction in the Uk is fiberglass Freedom caravans from Poland.
