What is an interesting (though admittedly horrifying) part of this film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from showing the brutality of war. Every battle scene isn't some grand spectacle or Kung Fu fight with swords, but rather, every man killed dies in a bloody, gruesome fashion. Even those who survive are still badly injured, showing that no one is some kind of invincible god-tier character, nor a one-man army. Another thing is that it shows that arrows aren't some weak little pinprick that can be ripped out all willy nilly, but are in fact deadly projectiles that can (and do) cause crippling wounds or even death if it hits a vital organ. Look no further than Liam Neeson's character, Godfrey of Ibelin. He gets hit with an arrow early in the film and doesn't rip it out, but is in terrible agony when it happens. When the shaft breaks, he doesn't shrug it off easily, but in fact it gets infected and he does die from it, showing there isn't any "Hollywood healing" or easy recovery available. Oh, and while I'm at it, they did do the research when it comes to larger battles as well. Saladin at one point states, "The results of battle is determined by God, but also by preparation, numbers, the absence of disease and the availability of water. How many battles did God win for the Muslims before I was King? [...] It was because you were unprepared."
In this era, where the best armour generally was chainmail which is excellent in melee combat especially against slashing weapons since no amount of force with a bladed edge is going to penetrate the rings; and not too shabby against thrusting weapons since you'd need considerable strenght and a very, very thin tip to pierce or break through a ring and even then the thrust will be heavily mitigated But it would absolutely suck against arrowheads because of the sheer velocity at which they are sent flying. So an arrow at that time was a deadly threat to anyone who did not have a shield to protect himself. Later on the threat of arrows against heavy infantry (and knights/heavy cavalry) was heavily mitigated thanks to plate armour against which arrows basically just bounced off, but at the era the movie takes place arrows were a real menace. Also archers generally were quite a valuable commodity since good bowmen had to be both skilled enough to shoot accurately or at least somewhat accurately in formation, and also strong enough to handle heavy draw weight bows that would be necessary in war (for range and piercing power against maille, shields, etc) so there was this one caveat to the utility of bows.
I agree except for what you said about arrows. Arrows, according to many people, did not even penetrate the gambeson, one of the most basic and "cheap" parts of armor. You have ballistic tests on the internet if you want to see, and crossbows, even the heaviest ones that need to be carried on strings, have a hard time penetrating at a certain distance.

Once Baldwin died, the kingdom was screwed
Notice everytime Balian slices into the enemy the mise en scene switches to boiling oil being poured down the ramparts.
sallahudin ayyubi the undefeated ruler, conquerer etc
This clip is so much better than the newest game of thrones episode... smh
Damn i missed playing stronghold i always use engineers with oils
Well made battle scene.
imagine being in a battle like this im definitely going back in time just to take part in a siege like this
You'd die in the first hour
The sieges would last for months, sometimes longer. There’s no fun to be had. If the violence didn’t kill you, disease probably would have done.
Nah mate I like living.
Tbh it looks cool, but you'd be absolutely terrified running head first with a wooden shield to burning oil and arrows
I hope you’re aware most sieges aren’t like helms deep. Watch the movie ironclad and you’ll get a better sense of most sieges where they last months and the enemy just starves you
That look on his face lol Well well...... Impressive boy
It would’ve sucked to be that guy to go for your sword and realize hey that guy just took it and walked off with my sword now I’m about to die
Saladin's reaction:" All right boy".
The defenders have a simple weapon, sand by heating them up and spray by catapult or pour them by large wooden spoon on the assulting force with make them scratch or try to remove the hot sand that went inside their clothes , armor like sting of ants such that the defenders could have slaughter the enemy at ease. Instead of boiling water or molten lead.
The enemies tactics are creative. 👌
How?
if i was immortal i would go back in time to take part in these great battles
but you will still bear the pain though. Immortality does not necessarily mean immune to pain, it just that you won't die
Or you can just play Mount and Blade
Believe me, you'd rather die by the time the battle is over due to how much pain you've sustained.
Best medieval siege in a film ever.
Doesn't matter you're muslim or not....you gotta respect saladin
He definately is a brilliant inspiring and honored figure. We tempt to forget that before all of this the middle east and wesyt worlds lives in perfect balance and trade. And unfortunately the west is to arrogant to teach of the great importance muslim figures have helped and even at a time where far way more knowingly in medicine, astrology and especialy science. But those like me who are not feeling bound to a certain nationality and have humanity wide interests and curiousity will know better
Wonder how they could see so far and clear that they could read expressions on each other's faces...
I think its not meant to be that they can see each others faces. The movie wanted to show that the two know and respect each others character so well that they know how the other is reacting in that moment.
When movie used to be so amazing not just full of CGI
Legolas reliving the siege of Minas Tirith. But instead of shooting arrows, he's in the role of Gandalf.
A very cool movie great graphics congratulations to the creators made history
Best soldier of Saladin soldier of 🇲🇦 history
Saladin: "Oh well good thing I brought Grond with me"
I was going to say I think Ridley Scott should do fantasy, but I realise he already did fantasy
If the Christians wouldn't have lost all the army at the previous battle, salah din wasn't propably able to win this, or?
Probably not. But his successor or their successor would have eventually. They were on the up, the Christians in the Holy Land had already peaked.
The Crusader army was led by the French which was ultimately weakened
Oh yea and Saladin lost this battle as well and bartered peace
@@jacksonpettit4690 lol you know that the first crusade was only composed of french and normand french, they made the kingdom lol, Richard Lionheart was french normand descendant so shut up
@@jacksonpettit4690Most of the crusaders in all crusades were French, even Richard the Lionheart was.
Well fight Legolas 🧝♂️
Gimli : I still count at one!!!
No one can destroy Jerusalem..
Jerusalem Muslim game over🇮🇶
A trained knight was worth at least 10 regular men. Read about the Knights of Malta.
Ingenious method of dealing with the siege towers.
Keep them off the walls!
Daubeny show yourself!
I like to think that the real Saladin was exactly like the Saladin portrayed in this film.
Not even close lol
He's like well done.. you got me this time
Im Kurdish just like Great Salaadin
We Proud to be His Nation
Great background score!!!
Your quality will be known among your enemies before ever you meet them
Watching all your siege machinery coming down like that has to hurt... It took days and weeks to build that crap up... Aside from the losses caused by the falling towers on top of the soldiers and the ones inside when the whole things came crushing down
Also they had to transport the materials. There isn't a lot of good timber in those regions.
it took 2 to 3 months to complete each, they lack timbers that they need to get timbers from todays algeria
Questo è un film spettacolare
This movie is old but much better than Bahubali 😀😀😀
Legolas must've gotten some great experience after fighting in Helms Deep
1:05
" GET THIS HERESY OUT OF HERE"
One of my favorite scènes! Great and glorious!
A normal day for Legolas lol
believe me if this was possible in Medieval 2 or god willing Medieval 3 when ever that becomes a thing that isn't muddled in taboo or current events this basilica harpoon tactic would be my go to for defending against siege towers.
Ridley Scott!!!!!!
