  • PLEASE REIZA MAKE A CLASSIC INDYCAR!!
Sliding a 450hp Formula 1 car, inches from concrete barriers, on bumpy dusty streets, against 25 fierce competitors and all while in the view of the ocean. Long Beach is truly a special place. Some may say its an American version of Monaco, and it might be, but it has certainly owned its own place in motorsport history. Long Beach has been recently released for Automobilista 2 as a part of the "Racin' USA" DLC. The Lotus 72 forms a natural pair and provided instant fun. AMS2 is really coming a long way!

The 'Racin USA' pack on Steam mentions describes "Pack featuring several North American cars and tracks, modern and historical" so I'm really hopeful they'll do some '70s or '80s versions of the tracks in Parts 2 and 3 - old Long Beach would be great. There's a two-part Historic Track Pack on the horizon too. In reference to your 'final thoughts', Renato from Reiza has hinted that a '90s CART car is coming in the next pack (and there's only so much modern stuff they can do in a 'US open wheeler' pack, right?), so fingers crossed for some matching circuits.
    AC's my go to for

'90s Indycar and F5000 would make AMS2 complete IMO

Seeing as it's a Brazilian developer I'd be shocked if Reiza didn't add '80s and/or '90s CART cars and tracks at some point, as that was the era when Emmo came in, had his successful "second career" and kicked open the door for guys like Boesel, Moreno, Ribeiro (R.I.P.) and on through to TK and Helio.

I’m English but love American tracks and the Indy cars. Cannot wait for the AMS 2 ovals later this month. Would be great if they could add Road Atlanta at some point too, fantastic track. There’s a lot of snobbery over here towards US motorsport in general, mainly from F1 fans who think it’s the be all and end all (“anyone can go round in circles” etc) and a lot of folk have no idea how many great circuits the States has. Long Beach is a favourite of mine but always struggle with that final hairpin. Anyway mate, great vid as always.

That's the Lotus 72E, from 74. The Lotus 72, was introduced in 1970, and it dominated. The Lotus 72, wasn't as competitive in 1971, mainly due to Fittipaldi, only being in his first full season, but in 1972 Fittipaldi won the title. The following year, in 1973, he was joined by Peterson, the quickest driver of all time. (at the Nürburgring, he out qualified Fittipaldi by over 11 seconds. The previous year, he out qualified his then teammate, Niki Lauda by over 20 seconds! Peterson really was the quickest driver to ever sit in an F1 car). It's why Fittipaldi left to join McLaren for 1974 and won the title again. Fittipaldi was the best all-round driver of the 70s, quick, smooth and reliable. Peterson was quicker, but hard on his car. Lotus introduced the Lotus 76 in 1974, but it wasn't as good as the 72, so they went back to it. JPS, the title sponsor, wasn't paying Lotus enough money, so Chapman refused to design a new car for 1975. Meaning, in 75, Peterson was still driving the now 6-year-old Lotus 72. It wasn't competitive at all. The following year, 1976, Lotus had the 77, which was a test bed car. This was due to Chapman already having the idea of ground effect, he planned to use the following year. Unfortunately for Peterson, he left after one race and went back to March, although he did win a race, the March was the chassis you went out and bought it wasn't anything special. For 1977 Andretti won a few races in the Lotus 78, the first ground effect car. It was by far the best car, but Andretti wasn't the best driver, so they only came 3rd in the championship. People like to say the 78 wasn't reliable, but it was either engine failure or driver error, the car didn't fail. For 1978, Peterson returned, but he signed as a number 2 driver. Meaning, the quickest driver to ever turn a wheel, was now number 2. When the Lotus 79 was introduced, it was the quickest thing out there and looked like it was from the future. Andretti always had the latest chassis, whereas Peterson had the older one. Peterson also qualified on race tyres, but he was still quicker than Andretti, so they had to put more fuel in his car too. In the races, Peterson used to follow Andretti around nose to tail, because he wasn't allowed to pass him. (watch the Austrian race to see what happened when he didn't have to). As anyone knows, following closely isn't easy, not unless you can go much quicker. Peterson died from a broken leg in a startling pileup at Monza. The pile up was due to the chequered flag being waved whist the cars at the back were still in the formation lap and hadn't stopped. Peterson died from a broken leg, because the Italian doctor allowed bone marrow to get into his blood stream. Andretti won the championship and Peterson was 2nd.

Especially in this day and age when so many circuits, even permanent ones (thanks modern F1, not), seem so over-complicated, the simplicity of the 1992-98 Long Beach layout is really refreshing. It, and the 1994-97 Vancouver circuit were just really nice and fast, with plenty of scope for good racing.
If we're talking about with the Fountain Complex, then the 1999 layout is what I'd go for, as it still has the longer backstretch with the esse bends at the start.
Particularly with the 1975-81 Long Beach layout, it isn't just about going up the hill to Ocean. The front "straight" was several hundred feet longer. Also, the parking lot didn't feel so constrained, because you didn't have the hairpin right there, but rather, an actual "straight" coming out onto Shoreline before the final hairpin.
Other temporary circuits that come to mind that could/would be fun for some of the more serious machinery include Miami (IMSA/Trans-Am: 1987-94, CART: 1995), Tampa (IMSA: 1988-90), St. Petersburg (Trans-Am: 1986-90, CART: 2003), San Antonio (IMSA: 1990), Columbus (IMSA: 1985-88), Las Vegas (CCWS: 2007), Sao Paulo (IndyCar: 2010-13), Surfers Paradise (CART: 1995-07), and Cleveland (CART: 1990-07).
Maybe for these older cars, there need to be versions of some of the street tracks where the chicanes are taken out. Thinking about it, and you mentioned Monaco, but with these cars, Montjuich Park really should be in there, too.
No question, the Lotus 72 is very nice. Int terms of looks, the Ferrari 312 B and B2 aren't bad; the same goes for the 312 T2 and T3. The Ligier JS7 and JS9 have their aesthetic appeal as well. And of course, always a soft spot for the Tyrrell P34. However, in terms of the cleanest-looking, winged F1 car, I don't know that anything beats the Lotus 79.
Given the relative lack of attention it gets, I'm glad there's a car resembling one of the Shadows in there; I quite like their DN2 and DN4 Can-Am cars.

Got AMS2 On the download again after hearing good things about 1.2 - it's a frustrating sim for me to like, but it absolutely nails the visual immersion of vintage open wheel cars, but the handling has always annoyed me as it doesn't drive how I would like it to (no idea how accurate it is as I've never driven any form of racing car, and still new to historic sim racing).
The understeer was the biggest issue, so to hear you say it's been toned down a bit is a massive improvement - and the sound of that glorious Cozzie DFV will never not raise goosebumps!

9:30 some understeer is a pretty big understatement. A real car would burning the fronts up in no time with such crazy understeering. You should reduce the coasting lock of the differential quite a bit. And you should also look at the damper settings. Usually the pulling settings on the back and the push settings on the front should be reduced for better corner entry.

Stiffen the rear dampers a little. Old adage, Stiffen the rear = Oversteer & less traction, Stiffen the Front Understear. Soften the Rear = Understeer and More Traction. Same with stabiliers. You could also experiment with tyre pressures. Springs you should never mess with, cause every car needs a very specific spring frequency. So you young guys cutting your springs, you're doing a very dumb and dangerous thing. Change your dampers, not the springs.

I dunno why but no sim (nor mod) yet has a proper open wheeler physics. They must mess up a lot somewhere. They dont behave like they should no matter which sim you try. AMS2 had it pretty good at the beginning on some F1 cars... but then it changed. Maybe its the downforce physics that mess up the tires, maybe its the diff physics or who knows.
But in real life any racecar driver will tell you how awesome it is to drive high hp high downforce openwheel car. Not so much in a sim - yet.
iR Indycars are only good at highspeed oval but short oval and road/street... its really bad.
