  • Buying jewelry isn't always a clear-cut decision with so many options and details to know about beforehand like carats or material weight, whether its gold, platinum or other popular precious metals used for custom bling nowadays. HYPEBEAST recently sat down with some of today's notable jewelry-makers and we picked their brains about what people should really look for when it comes to making such a special and expensive purchase.
    In this episode of HYPEBEAST How To, mastercraftsman Greg Yuna along with A$AP Eva of Popular Jewelry NYC and Alex Moss of Avianne & Co. help us break down the many factors involving buying jewelry. While topics such as personal style and budget come to play, other things like current trends and seeking out the best designer for your vision must also be observed. Buying jewelry has gone beyond just choosing and paying attention to color, cut, clarity and carat weight. With custom pieces being so extravagant nowadays, its best to let these experts tell you what you're really paying for and what type of service, time and execution are really on the table when it comes to getting the piece you ultimately want.

    • @emeinert2917

      Depends on a lot of things... you will have value in the stones aswell

    • @Gmizzle2000
      @Gmizzle2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      possibly. but it affects the weight of the piece. unless you have an investment grade diamond, anything you sell will be weighed for metal content. that's what you'll get. dealers will pay spot for the metal & they gon get the stones for free. then, melt it, or mark up the price & make their profit.

    • @emeinert2917
      @emeinert2917 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Yep, but not much. The stones will most definitely cover the cost of the metal drilled out. When you talk about the Ice out of the piece losing its value I would refer to high-end watches losing their value because of messing with the watch originality and not the loss of material. But yes if you are investing in gold through a piece of jewelry I would not consider busting down the piece.

    LITERALLY the only reason Alex says ”don’t buy labmade” is because it negatively affects his and other jewelers ability to finesse these stupid rappers overpaying for everything. labmade diamonds are the most flawless form of diamond out there.

      @@gabyk3637 No that's the biggest issue in the diamond industry no one can tell the difference they test out the same. Jewelers don't even know the difference if that information isn't being shared that it is a lab diamond. It literally starts out a diamond crystal in a chamber and grows into a literal diamond. its cheaper because there no real work being put into it and it doesn't take millions of years to form they can have a 1ctw diamond in just a few months. You can buy a ring full of lab diamonds and resale as genuine from the ground diamond theirs no way to tell the difference

    If your looking to save money while buying nice pieces look at used and pre owned jewelry, pawnshops will sometimes sell you it for price per gram just so they don’t have to pay it to get melted and some of that stuff has sat for months and years. Do your research look at what gold is going for that day, offer lower than asking price. When you go to a jewelry shop your buying the same damn thing + their labor cost, it could mean the difference in hundreds or thousands of dollars for the same thing

    All you need is a 18K solid gold Cuban around 12-13mm width and around 24-28 inch long if you can afford 18K if not 14K will suffice. If you get in a bind you can sell it and get most of your money back spending on how long you had it and how much gold prices increase and going of the economy and stock market prices you probably will not loose any money. Now you start with that “bust down” non sense and you just a wasting money. But to each their own. Get a plane gold chain or watch and that’s a smart purchase. Even though I notice people like to criticize people that wear jewelry like I mentioned. But they will be the same ones buying cigarettes and drinking every weekend and have a 60 grand car on finance like that makes sense. Had a debate with a co-worker about this.

      Paul Daniel Williams but theres a huge difference. Yes both are real but natural diamonds are more expensive than lab diamonds. A single lab diamond will cost you $2,500 while a natural diamond will cost you around $8,000. So imagine trying to buy an iced out watch that has lab diamonds and another one that has natural diamonds? Quality will cost you more.

Well, that's the worst investment you can do. Just assume hat EVERY diamond you see from now on is man made. Granite is probably more valuable by now.
      When I see a video like this I just KNOW he wont tell the truth. A diamond is worthless, but when people see the sparkles in they get hypnotized again. Its ridiculous .

    • @Gausdave213
      @Gausdave213 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@brick0108 It sounds like you don't understand the appreciation people have for diamonds. Natural diamonds are among the top of the worlds toughest materials, it's used in many businesses for many different reasons, it's an old tradition, it's a lucrative business, they shine beautifully, there's many diffrent shapes to choose from, the diamond cutting process is perceived as prestigious work because of the precision and technique that goes into it, it's a status symbol. There's so many reasons I can't come up with them all.
      Big diamonds in rare colors are still super expensive and rare. They only appear in small clusters usually and can only be mined for a finite ammount of time. The diamond business is and has been a dirty one throughout the years, but what business isn't? People in all classes, cultures and businesses can be fucking assholes and most are, just adapt to it and try to prosper.

    Dang and Wong seem very reasonable. The other two who started their price range at $1000 seem expensive. To me it seems Asian people work very hard. Wong said for a $100 you can get this and that. Johnny Dang is so popular because he doesn’t charge so much and still delivers high quality. We don’t know what the margins of Diamonds are. In the end they are just rocks that have been cut and polished. After you go to these mom and pap jewelry store, you don’t go to Tiffany’s anymore. At those mom and pap places you can get way more for less.

    Most folks who think they have vs, have si1 or 2 with decent colore and many folks who think they have si1 have i1 with decent color. You can give a client a 10xs power loop and they wouldn't have a clue what to look for. They wouldnt know about inclusions being close to the center and how many there are of them. Not just carbon but feathers or other types of stones. Stones with flourecense that look like shit in natural light and glow in black lighting. Shit like that gets you caught up in the moment when you see a nice 10ct. Bracelet hitting inside and when taking outside it looses it luster fast!

    I like platinum, but it's too expensive for me. Not a gold fan. I like white gold. My white gold chain and pendant is 18k to prolong the oxidation. Keep it white longer, before it turns back to gold or limit having to get it done again in white gold. Platinum is a naturally white precious metal with low density. It will always be white and very durable, but...it's expensive. So, I settle with white gold. I might still get platinum in the future, but only a 1.3mm Franco chain.
