I really like how at 8:55 the gangways between carriages is covered to stop people from falling through the gap.
I like these trains a lot, and I'm curious to see what the Alstom X'Trapolis 2.0 will look like.

Hopefully the X'Trapolis 2.0 will help champion inclusive design too! Hopefully the covers make it harder for anyone to climb up onto the trains as well.

Unfortunately w automatic doors you’d let in the Melbourne elements (both heat and rain) at every stop, even when no one is using the door

This is true, but you could set up a system that opens at key interchange stops, or during peak hours only and turn it off when the bad weather hits!

I just took a train home last night (in KL, Malaysia) which I don't often do. I was like "not very green" when I felt the not air coming in at EVERY station especially it was already past 9pm and weren't that many people.
But I like your idea though. It should work.

@@TalkingPlanning Thats probably already going to happen at the new stations as they will have platform screen doors. Theyll be underground too so losing energy through the doors shouldnt be an issue

I have one question about these new trains.. I’m not a frequent traveller. But can I ask why the northern suburb train lines like Craigieburne, upfield and south morang lines never get the new trains assigned? The trains I’ve been on those lines are very old I’ve never seen a new train on those lines

it's mainly because of how the train network used to operate before Metro took over, with M>Train buying trains that were different from the ones Connex bought, and those trains only being operated on that specific operator's territory, which in the case of those northern lines would be M>Train. eventually Connex bought enough new trains that they could completely replace the older trains on the Alamein, Belgrave, and Lilydale lines, so those older trains began operating in M>Train territory. also, these new trains are designed to operate on the Cranbourne-Pakenham corridor, through the Metro Tunnel, and then down the Sunbury line before turning off towards the airport, though the Airport Rail Link has not been built yet. however in 2025, another new train design is set to enter service, aiming to replace the old trains, which includes those on the northern lines

Thanks.. but I’ve been on AU since 2005 but never always observed newer trains in east and south eastern lines.. look forward to new trains in 2025..

The Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury Lines will run through the new Metro Tunnel by 2025 and it will have direct connection to Melbourne Airport Rail Link by 2029.

I am quite surprised that the trains are made in China despite the rocky relationship between the two countries.

    • @TalkingPlanning

I think more would be quite surprised to see how many imported components are fitted in locally built products. At the end of the day, purchase price and total cost of ownership are the key considerations for an operator under most circumstances.
Plus, I'm more interested in whether a vehicle does its job well than geopolitical stalemates between a multitude of distorted perspectives...its better that way!

I caught a bus in sydney that had the WORST design, the seat right behind the rear doors had a hand bar right where your knees go! So there is ZERO leg room, who designs this garbage... I took a picture if you want to see it.
