By Far, the best Dame Edna Interview on US TV. Roseanne was well into the act and let the Dame rule the roost. Both enjoyed the audience reaction and Barry even when pretending to be sad was well able to smile at the reaction. Brilliant. I often wondered how Sir Les Patterson would have gone down in the States. Seems to me that Sir Les is only understood and could get away with his style in Australia and the UK.

Barry makes even the worst show look good
Roseanne stole Edna's joke about the Queen and the beauty products but couldn't make it 10% as funny. Edna should be on stage by herself in this case.

First, Roseanne ruins the joke by saying DiCaprio's name (Edna was for sure going to "hint" about the sinking ship) so Edna throws shade by referring to the "chemistry" he has with Roseanne when clearly he means there isn't any because Roseanne is too dumb for his jokes.
The irony is that Dame Edna's talk show performances are a spoof of terrible talk shows like Roseanne's.
Great chemistry between these two. They obviously like each other.

I’ve watched a bunch of these episodes and it seems to be something she does often, interrupt her guests.
Barry is a Camberwell Grammar School (Church of England) old boy however he was at my school 15 years earlier than me.
@sovereignty rules - Moonee Ponds is not far away from the elite University of Melbourne were Barry studied and he often travelled on the trains The Army Reserve has deports in Moonee Pond and affluent Hawthorn too. I was posted to Moonee Ponds from 1984-1987 as ARA Cadre staff. Actually Dame Edna was modeled on some of Barry's aunts and his mother I understand. I have seen four of his show in Melbourne. When some ratbags said that the voters did like then PM Sir Robert Menzies Barry said yes they did not like him, except those that voted for him. I lived in Menzies Kooyong electorate from 1964 to 1971 before joining the Army. Barry's father was a house builder.
@sovereignty rules In one show Barry showed his home films and seen were some of the nice brick houses in Camberwell that his father was involved with building. They were not your run of the mill triple fronted brick veneers either like our former house in North Balwyn. Another film showed my sisters school MLC Kew and she said when watching it as the Arts Centre there is my first headmaster Rev Wood.

Americans didn't know how to approach the Dame, they related to her as a woman, and missed a lot of the bitter irony of Barry Humphries.
At the time when Humphries made a splash with the character, Americans perceived men in drag to be gay... or Tootsie. And now in an era when gay and transgender is the norm, it's probably even more confusing to persons unfamiliar with his schtick.

Some of Barry's characters are Lance Boil a union official who called an airline strike to stop his wife from leaving him by aeroplane, Phil Philby a creepy film maker who got an award for a film about the "problem" of lesbianism in a women's aboriginal refuge prison and Sir Les Paterson Australia's grubby and sexist Minister for Culture.
Dame Edna is not a real dame (a lady knight) its just part of the act. However The Queen of Australia (Elizabeth 11) and Australian government has given Barry Humphreys other real honours. He has a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) and AO (Order of Australia).

Some Americans know who she is. Dame Edna had some success in the US in the late 1990's and early 2000's and even appeared in quite a few episodes of the American TV show Ally McBeal. But her success was more a reflection of the times, and her cerebral wit is not suited to most Americans' taste, sad to say.

Not entirely true Jessie. I’m american and I LOVE Dame Edna. Always have. Brilliant and so funny. And I believe the funniest sitcom ever made was Absolutely Fabulous. I have the three series and its specials on DVD

Dame Edna is a female character, one of a few different ones in his stage shows. The man is comedian Barry Humphreys from Melbourne who has been married to women (one at a time) all his life and he has children. I have seen 3 shows in Melbourne and I am a straight former Infantry officer.
