Hasbro's Star Wars RETRO Series - a Feathered Fish?

  • In my last video, I compared the packaging of Hasbro's Star Wars RETRO series to that of Mattel's Masters of the Universe ORIGINS line. Well, now I'm going a bit deeper into the RETRO series specifically, and asking the question "what are these really supposed to BE, anyway?"
And lest you think I'm a dude who will complain about something without offering solutions, think again! I really think this series could be great, if given just a few tweaks. So have a watch, and as always jump into the comments below to let me know what you think!

Just in case anyone is confused...I had to reupload this video because I'm an idiot and accidentally uploaded an unedited version the first time around. What can I say, maybe I need more sleep? Anyway, if you commented on the last version and now it's not here...that's why!

Long live Retro!! I'm hoping there's many, many years of Retro to come. I'm predominantly OT on it, but I've got at least one or two from each other wave as they've been available.

I agree that retro collection lost its way as I was all in on buying them, but soon as Ahsoka line dropped I stopped. The line needs more classic Kenner 96 and a few Droids and Ewoks from 1985 would not hurt either!

Disney should hire your boss to explain feathered fish.

Here's a funny little nugget of irony for you...she actually worked at Disney a few years after we worked together elsewhere. :)

Like I said on your previous vieeo, I think this is such a low priority for Hasbro and when they get it right it's more of a 'hey, look at that!' moment, more than a 'let's do the best figures we can! and build a genuine line'. It's just so all over the place. The most damning thing is the lack of bulk Stormtrooper options. Where's a 5 or 10 pack of fresh white Stormtroopers for me? I ended up going the Pro Custom route there, but it's still easy money for Hasbro they don't seem to want. The same couold be said for Hoth Rebels or Snowtroopers or Rebel Commandos. Everyone wants to make the Shuttle Tydirium box product shot, don't they? Seriously, it's money for nothing. When they drop the ball that badly on something that basic it gives me little hope for the figures you suggested. Feathered fish is right, but I honestly don't think they had any vision for it when it started up and they're just making it up as they go along... years later. Thank the maker for 3D printed options is all I can say.

Well said Mcclunkey. That's why I am and will continue to buy from fans making better stuff than Hasbro like you, Hasnotalent, StanSolo, and Trash Compactor. Thanks for what you do for the fans who love the original Kenner type figures!

Totally agree about what they should do with the Retro line. There were several characters from the OG trilogy who never got toys. Several can be gotten from custom makers like yourself, but I think Hasbro is missing the mark by not doing more of the missing figures.

I like the choices Hasbro made for the rotj box, with one never-made figure, couple of army builder types, and one or two where the original figure is expensive in secondary market. Ackbar could have been another builder like a rebel commando and it would have been perfect IMO.

I don't have a problem with any of the figures they made for this box - my issues are that a) they ONLY made the figures available as a set, meaning that if you want to army-build Gammys, you have to buy the whole set...and if you just want Mon Mothma, you have to buy the whole set. And b) you could only buy the set in very limited places, making it difficult to come by at retail.

@@funkymaclunkey yeah agreed it would be nice if they were available individually too, but I do think if they continue to do box sets, the idea of including one previously unmade figure makes them more enticing.

@@funkymaclunkey There'd be pegs of unsold Mon Mothma everywhere if she were made separately. That part makes sense. Putting the army builders in the set, only makes sense in the "they'll pay anything to army build" mindset. And some people are that...dedicated.

Only recently found your videos and I really enjoyed them and certainly I agree with you on the retro line- is such a missed opportunity not Justin, the figures, they are releasing, but particularly the cards . As you explained, previously There’s nothing to engage you with these cards - you can’t take the retro sticker off the front easily, it is just awful. Even if they were done much more like the original vintage, no one would generally mistake them for the originals Nobody is gonna mistake them for the originals as you say, look what Matt Alec done with mass of the universe not perfect, but much much better! All the best from Mark in London.

Put some lighter fluid on the sticker to peel it off easier

I'm trying to remember a time this century when Hasbro didn't have distribution problems, and I'm coming up blank. You are using logic and reason, and Hasbro has strict rules against using those to make any decision! It doesn't matter how obvious it is to anyone with half an ounce of sense, Hasbro is just going to keep making decisions based on their corporate mentality.

Hasbro are really missing a trick with their retro line. Artisans like yourself are filling the void. Instead of the retro like being awesome, it's just plain meh. Don't even get me started on the retro sticker and trash feux weathering......
