In general, countries with bigger populations do better in sports, for eg, China, Russia and the USA are some countries with a big population and they are among the most successful Olympic nations (Taking the Olympics as an example because it's an amalgamation of many different sports).
India is an exception to this rule we have a huge population but do shitty in the Olympics, we only fare well in a very few sports and on top of that list is cricket.
