    Hey Lilly, just a quick addition to your winter camp. I spent 8 years in the U.S. Army, and some time in Korea. In February that country is freezing. When I was a young soldier, we bedded down for the night in our sleeping bags (arctic and rated to -15 deg.) we had our uniforms on and that consisted of, field jacket, tunic and trousers, sweater, scarf, wool gloves, wool underwear and heavy socks. Most of us rolled our field jackets as pillows, but we're ready to sleep in the other stuff. An old sergeant came around and made us strip down to our long underwear. He told us if we slept in our close we wouldn't warm up during the day because we would never be as warm as in our bags. He also told us to sleep in our socks, but put an extra pair folded in our coat, that way the sock would be warm and dry to wear.
    Long story short: 1. sleep in a warm sleeping bag with only enough to keep you warm through the night
    2. Spread your top layers out under the bag and sleep on them, it will keep them warm and dry, but not hot.
    3. Sleep on your coat with and extra pair of socks tucked in.
    4. Sleep in a knit cap it head wrap and keep your heavy hat for the day.
    Hope this helps for when you brace a week in your awesome shelter. You are the best, love your videos.

      In Boy Scouts we were tought the part about not sleeping in your clothes and spreading them out under our sleeping bag and we told that the reason for getting out of you clothes is to let the moisture from wearing them dry out so they will be better insulators during the next day. Seemed to make a difference.

      +Rick Bohleber Viking Warrior Princess? In Austria? Her profile says she's in Austria and the book she was reading was written in German.

    • @rickbohleber9409

      ***** Yes, Vikings! Read some history. Most of the northern Germanic tribes, the Russians, Hungarians, Austrians, Romanians, and even northern Turks were infiltrated and over-run by Vikings. Look at the old Nazi propaganda films where they tout their arian Viking heritage. The largest brick castle in Eastern Europe is a Viking stronghold in southern Hungary. Yes Vikings.
      I meant it as a compliment to her. What would you call her? A Yuppy Urban Generation Xer out for a romp in the woods?

    • @dwightstewart7181
      @dwightstewart7181 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rick Bohleber No, I don't call her anything. I don't go around trying to characterize others. By the way, you're talking about some mighty ancient history that very few Europeans today would identify with.

    Great videos Lilly, I really enjoy them. Just a suggestion if I may. You might consider adding a few paper plates to your kit. Use these when you feed your dog. This way the food does not get on the ground inside your shelter area where small bits of left over dog food can attract other animals or ants. When the dog finishes eating just toss the paper plate in the fire and you don't have to worry about any left overs. Just an idea. Keep those videos coming, we are really enjoying them here in Alabama. Austria is a beautiful country.

  • @whatever2345
    @whatever2345 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I noticed your shelter is good for long term stay. Depending on what country you live in you should consider perhaps planting a few fruit trees and raspberry bushes near/ around your camp. Becuase if something where to happen and you had to stay in it long term the Fruit would be good to eat.

    Eine Wolldecke zusammen zu nähen und als Biwaksack zu gebrauchen finde ich eine richtig gute Idee. Die Wolldecke schützt den Schlafsack ziemlich gut vor Nässe, ist trotzdem atmungsaktiv, isoliert zusätzlich, schützt obendrauf den Dauenenschlafsack zuverlässig vor Funkenflug und brennt selber nicht. Der Nachteil ist vielleicht das etwas grössere Packmass und etwas mehr Gewicht… trotzdem werde ich diese tolle Low-budget-Idee kopieren. Danke für den tollen Tip. LG Felix

      Steve Morse: When my brother and I were youngin's, we spent our time in the woods, living on a 100 acre farm we had plenty of woods. Our favorite was a cave like area, that had moss in it, so we called it carpet, nowadays the young ones are too busy playing inside with their electronics, I always take my grandsons in the woods and teach them about how to identify trees, bushes, edible roots, etc. They enjoy it, as do I. I would love to have them to help make a place like Lily. They could also use it when hunting. Thank You Lily for sharing with us.

    I worked for a sleeping bag company years ago. The rating factors 3 assumptions.
    1. The person has insulated ground cover
    2. There is no air movement over the bag(so in a shelter)
    3. The person is male.
    The rule of thumb is you add -2 to the sleeping bag rating if female.
    But the killers are ground temp, and wind.
    Also a big factor is state of mind. So this video shows perfect conditions: the well insulated ground cover, shelter, and state of mind is excellent. And -1 rating in these conditions is really cosy.
    This person would be excellent to teach kids. A study showed the first experience kids have of survival camping needs to be positive.

    Lilly, I have enjoyed your videos so much. They are basic survival instructions and easy to try. Personally I would ditch the salami and rice and get Campbell's soup. They are easy to prepare and taste so good. I would also drape a tarp or visqueen over the entrance to block wind and rain or snow from getting on my bedding, etc. Also my dog would be hurt if I didn't let her sleep with me. Thanks for your adventures.

We have 35 acres to work and keep clean but I got lazy this year and did not do any cleaning after we had our timber cut. I need to take one tractor and saw and go back and clear out the roadways of downed limbs, and bushes, then take my other tractor with bush hog and finish cleaning up the area I want to camp out on.

    13:31 actually it is possible to be burnt depending on what hot item you are holding and the thickness of the material/gloves, anyone who has mistakenly grabbed a tray from their oven with a folded tea towel they thought was dry (but wasn't) soon finds out that the dampness quickly converts to superheated steam and scolds.
    I have found leather gloves like the Patrolman types sold by Hatch work well moving and holding tins which have been heated by an open fire :)

      Rhonda Kelley I agree that both genders should post a lot about survival. But if your comment is sincere, (I wouldn't know, as I am a male.) it just goes to show that minimalist packing, and bugging out in groups could yield much more than you'd think.

    • @chasingthenorth9719
      @chasingthenorth9719 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Zednought Wastelander I agree with Rhonda 100%. The thing is, men are literally biologically designed to carry heavy things on our shoulders; we are not. So trying to go lighter is always a good thing for a woman. I think more women should post camping/hiking/bushcraft videos!

    • @UncleFexxer
      @UncleFexxer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed with Rhonda and Rachel, from a man's perspective. A lot of male survivalists go overboard with the "stuff" aspect of outdoor survivalism and overpack until they look like Sam Gamgee from the LotR movies. I always like watching the (few) female backpackers' videos out there because there's a big focus on minimalism and ultralight packing.
      I've met women who were better at "roughing it" than a lot of guys simply because they can't carry all that crap and don't really have a choice.

      +UncleFexxer agree with that but have to add, until recently the ultra light gear wasn't available and us older guys and the ladies, we had to use what w's available, which means the heavy gear, and as we are used to it and have it e still use it, though for me am sow replaying with the light gear so long as it has longevity and does what its spose to do, am all for it 😉

    hey Lilly ... I showed my now 8 year old niece your video on your super shelter. She asked if we could make one in the woods by her home. We started working on it today. At one point while the mosquitos were eating us, she asked if we could just go and hang out in Survival Lilly's camp, wouldn't that be easier? I said it would, but it would be a long trip from Canada to Austria lol... we both find you very inspirational! Thanks!

I always try to do that as well; respect & honoring the bounty is often forgotten. I have a great deal of respect for you, Lilly and want to thank you for all you have taught me & will teach me in the future. Thank you for sharing your life & knowledge w us. this was a fantastic, relaxed vid. btw, very awesome how you took care of Dax (don't know if I spelled his name correctly). Be Blessed.

    Wonderful teachings from Lilly in this one. I wonder what metal is her canteen. Maybe aluminum, stainless steel, tin? The open sided shelter allows for light and camera access. I suspect construction of a small, insulated closed sided shelter for sleeping, even a simple debris hut and a big, open sided shelter like in the vid for everything else.

    the first time i camped overnight in the cold i consider my most beneficial trips. i wore rubber non insulated boots because i thought they would be good because they keep moisture out, i didnt bring a hat, and i slept in the boots and didnt change my socks. woke up and my feet were frozen blocks and i was cold all night because all my heat leaked out my head. yep i was young and learned those lessons right quick.

    Have you considered making wood into charcoal at your shelter? You could make some in a tin each time you have a fire. It burns long and hot.

    You have produced some very good videos, many thanks.
    In this one you mention damp clothing and the risk of hypothermia. If people can tolerate it, I always recommend merino wool. It is so much better than cotton which is best for absorbing moisture. We use cotton on towels because we want the towel to pull the moisture off after a shower, but in a winter environment damp clothing sucks the heat out of us. Cotton will hold the moisture and cause a chill.
    I watch for merino wool on sale and grab it up if it seems a bargain. Shirts, pants, socks, stocking hats they are very comfortable, to me at least, and do not feel scratchy. Some people may find it causes some itching when they first begin to wear it, but most will adjust. So far, I have found the merino wool from Italy to the best, but shop around and buy what is priced reasonably to learn with.
    I suppose second best would be a form of acrylic. Polypropylene does not work for me so that is not one I can not recommend.
    I was privileged to visit Austria in 1995, Sehr Schoen.

    What about a tin roof, and a wood stove? Wood would last longer and the heat would be more even. Plus you could cook on it.

    I think it would be cool to see you make a 3 person bug out shelter like yours in the video but kind of make it squared with two more sleeping areas, if you want you can designate one as Daxs(I think that's his names, correct me if I'm wrong) and then an extra for others or more storage in general

    You should get a older Boy Scout Field Hand Book. It has a lot of good information in it. The newer ones suck, they went soft on the outdoors. Even an old Boy Scout Handbook has a lot of good information. I have several of the old ones and even Scoutmaster's Handbook

    try doing a week in the snow with nothing but a shirt and pants and a small bug out bag (no blankets or heat retaining devices). I want to know if ever forced to camp out for a week in the snow unperpared. I would really like to know how to create heat retaining clothes and shelter with natural local sources.
