Since I'm not going hiking with my TNs, I almost always carry what I'm currently using with me. I've said it often - - my main insert is for my journal, which is mostly a written one. I've tried decorating, but, I've written since I was 8, and that's what I'm like. So I switch sizes when I finish a journal insert. I seldom work in other size inserts, so it doesn't matter if I have duplicate inserts in different sizes when i switch TN sizes. Like having a book with me at all times (kindle), I want my journal with me at all times. I think like this: if my car breaks down or I'm in an accident, I want my "stuff". So I shove the TN of whatever size in my bag and carry it to the car, and then into a building. No long heavy haul.
As for fountain pens, I always journal with a fountain pen. It's like my private "lit candle" - - it's part of the sacredness of writing. While I don't mind carrying expensive pens (I used to have a $2000 pen I carried weekly - - my pens all have different color inks and the pen of the day depends on the color ink I choose) I understand the concern. But, like jewelry, pens are meant to be used. I wear my good jewelry all of the time. So, get some inexpensive fountain pens for when you're out and about. A very cheap pen that I actually love is the shark pen. Goulet and Amazon carry them. They are literally under $5, and a converter is included. I think they write as well or better than Lamy, and come in lots of colors, should you want to get Goulet samples. My journal might not have decorations, but they are colorful. You can then make a point of using your more expensive fountain pens at home. The "Shark Fountain Pens" are less expensive than your rollerballs!

I carry an A5 Mr Darcy with a L1917 inside and another insert. I carry it in my laptop bag because I use it for work notes. I use a B6 notebook for my personal journal, but I don’t always carry it. I love my A5 TN. It had developed a lovely patina / been beat to hell in my laptop bag, and still works great.

I agree totally with you re: A5. I love the room it provides but the weight really got to me during 2018, when I carried it daily. For 2019 I've settled into using an A5 for my journal, keeping it safe at home. My daily carry/Bullet Journal is in an A6. I'm hoping to use each one for the whole year. I use a rollerball in the small one and save my fountain pens for the journal and other long-form writing and correspondence.

I have 2 CS A5s and I plan to use one as my faith journal. Haven't designated the other one yet. I agree that there is more real estate to write in with an A5. I love the quality and design of Chic Sparrow. Thank you Jen.

I’m so happy you did this one! I just ordered my first ever CS! I did the A5 surprise! I have never actually used anything like this ever! I used an EC before which I do love but I didn’t utilize it enough. So from lots of different you tube channels I discovered CS and Hobonichi cousin Avec ! So I have both on the way I’m so excited! And I can’t wait for the new purple one coming out soon! Thanks for all you do and I’m so happy I found you and your company! (Ps I’m also a plant lover!! And I can’t wait to start a plant journal!!)

Thank you for posting this, I've been considering the A5 for notes since I'm going back to college. I write small and loopy, and regular sized notebooks always seem to end up cluttered looking because of that. It looks like an A5 has just the right paper real estate for me :)

The availability of inserts makes the A5 really usable. My penmanship is very small and when I use an A5 it always gets larger over time. I've never been bothered by the weight since it's the size of Trade paperbacks and hardcover books (not exactly, but in that range) which I've never had difficulty carrying. Plus it gives me the chance to use some of my larger handbags and totes. ;)

I love A5. It’s my favorite. I just ordered the Havana Hemingway and a few other size TN’s in Havana. But I carry my Cronos A5 now with me. I put my credit cards and license in the front and carry my special pens when I want to draw on a whim. I love your notebooks. Every single one I’ve tried. Thank you for being so conscientious in giving us beautiful quality.

I use A5 as my EDC (and yes, I carry a big bag! The Rustic Tote, actually!). I like all the space, I like how easy it is to find inserts, etc. It's my favorite size, for sure. (PS--I came to CS from bullet journaling, so of course I started out in a Leuchtturm.)

  • @debihumphrey3734
    @debihumphrey3734 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Jen, you just gave me the best idea. I have an A5 TN I got before I discovered Chic Sparrow. It's made of fabric with a colorful sewing motif. It lives at home. I've only been using it to hold the notebooks I journal in so far. My idea is to use it like you do - to sketch and write details about my sewing design ideas. DUH. Don't know why I didn't think of this before - seems obvious now! Sometimes my brain just needs a nudge.
Also, on fountain pens: I always carry a couple of fountain pens with me. I add a fabric insert with a pen loop in each TN so I can put two pens on each of my notebooks. And I carry my Pelikans, Pilots, Sailors, Viscontis, all of them. I just deliberately pay special attention to my fountain pens (NOT saying you didn't). Like someone else who commented, I wear my expensive jewelry everywhere, too (just not in some neighborhoods!). I lost an expensive ($500) Pelikan once - in my own home! I tore the place apart; haven't found it yet. But I feel sure that it will eventually turn up (eternal optimist). It broke my heart to lose that pen. But it hasn't deterred me from enjoying my fountain pens. It just made me more careful. Even if you don't have a fountain pen specially listed on an insurance policy, it's covered for theft as personal property, as long as you know where you left it, and the only way it could be gone is if somebody stole it (previous insurance underwriter here). Of course, all policies may be a little different, but if you check with your Homeowners insurance people, that may assuage some of your fears. It won't take the place of that special pen in your heart, but it may allow you to buy another one.

These are beautiful covers but I'm still deciding on which size I need. BTW, my favorite rollerball pen is the Jetstream retractable by Uniball in either 0.7 or 1.0 size tip. Writes smoothly every time and doesn't smear within a second or two. They offer refills, too.

I also use A5 for my Leuchtturm bujo. I also keep a thinner, softcover Jottbook in it and a homemade pocket folder. It comes with me between home and work in a Fjallraven backpack, but not traveling or EDC (I agree, A5 is too big for that). For EDC/traveling, I use Pocket size with Field Notes inserts, with content specific for day-to-day informal notes or trip planning/journaling, and keep the TN cover relatively slim (no Pocket Plus or "chunky" set-ups, no deluxe Maverick, etc.).

I am just starting to use the A5, and I'm enjoying the size. I do agree that it is too big to carry around all the time. For that I use either the Classic size TN Or Personal size. As far as the loss of your fountain pen, I feel for you. I would be totally devastated if I lost one at that price too. Like you said, better to keep them home. Thanks for the review.

If I may offer a suggestion, try out the Platinum Preppy fountain pens for everyday use. They are disposable fountain pens that are actually my favorite fountain pens. They’re maybe $5 on JetPens and other sites that carry Japanese pens. They take their own brand cartridges, or they will also take the Platinum brand converter if you have a favorite ink you want to use.

I love the Toffee🥰 Thanks for sharing and yep A5 is a great YN for journaling- I am more of a journaler than planner. I searched for long time and finally got a Toffee in standard and it is my perfect TN to take my sermon notes in and often I doodle at church as we have our church in an old nursery with beautiful windows and love to do little doodles of how the light is in the church makes me happy🌸 I love your insights on the use of each size and for One Book July I ended up in an A5 and yes I have to use back pack to carry it🥴

I use an A5 for my art journal, and it lives on my desk! Definitely too big for me to carry around. The only things I carry are my pocket, which is my wallet and for lists and quick notes, and my Hobonichi Weeks that I use as a planner. My B6 is my journal, I have several covers that I alternate between, and it lives on my desk with my A5, along with another pocket that I use for finances and another pocket that I use as a reading log/journal. As you can tell, pocket and B6 are my jam! Lol

The A5 is a size I haven't tried. It just seems too big to me. I'm so used to doing everything on a smaller scale. The biggest size I have is B6 Slim, and that currently has personal inserts. It's only used for journaling and stays on my nightstand at home because of how heavy it is.

I love my A5 cover, it houses my everyday journal which is in a Rhodia Goalbook dotgrid. Which I love to write in daily, I also decorate the pages with stickers, washi tape and pictures from magazines that catch my eye. I agree about the weight issue but mine doesn't often leave the house. I'm afraid I have to admit unfortunately it isn't a Chic Sparrow cover. I live in the UK and although I would dearly love to own one of your beautiful leather covers, I am to nervous to order one incase it costs me a fortune in customs duty.

Going to start with an A5. I’m wondering about inserts that I can write (fountain pen), draw, and even water color on without any bleed through or making a mess? So if I use fountain pen ink and rain or water hits it everything will pretty much disappear, yet many people use such ink. How does that work?
