Call a hoof trimmer for Dominick. In all likelihood, he has what's known as a "white line defect," which is a small area of separation of the bottom of the hoof from the outer wall of the hoof. This outer wall acts like a weight bearing wall in a house, and when the animal takes a step, its entire weight is pressed onto this wall, then distributed to the sole of the hoof. Sometimes, very slight injuries to this area occur and a separation of the outer wall and the sole will occur, letting in debris and bacteria, which will result in digital dermatitis of the hoof lamina (the tissue that produces horn), which then leads to an abscess. A hoof trimmer will pare away the horn at the bottom of the hoof, letting the abscess drain, treat the infection usually with a spray and/or powder, then wrap it. Usually, there's a block glued onto the uninjured side that elevates the injured area off the ground until new horn grows. Don't be surprised if his limp seems to go away -- that's normal as his body tries to heal itself. But having a hoof trimmer come out and give him a good trim will actually speed up his healing.

@@Cenepk101 it shouldn't take more than one trim to fix a white line defect. If it does, either the trimmer isn't doing a good job, or the problem hasn't been correctly diagnosed and treated. In both cases, a new trimmer is called for.

Treasures in the attic indeed - what a find! I know you've come a long way from your San Francisco days when you are perfectly willing to go through papers (no matter how priceless) with mouse poop on them bare-handed😄. LOTS of giggles from interrupting the kitty's privacy, the Sputnik light fixture and Lincoln's 5 year old receipt. As for Dominic "How do you soak a Donkey's foot?". I am sure it sounded super simple when the Vet gave instruction...then came the practice of it. Merci for the smiles. A bientot!
We had a funeral for my beloved 21 year old cat today. She passed two weeks ago and today we buried her in the pet cemetery. I totally understand your devotion to your animals... you are my kind of people. I could totally help with translating your documents I am fluent in French... just do not know how we would do that. Those borlotti beans are beautiful! I must try to grow some... and I still love your choice of music for the videos... very sophisticated. You should link to them. Have a great week. If I may make 2 suggestions, first you should spray woodworm treatment up in the attics and secondly, you should put insulation up there. You should see great difference in temperatures during winter.😃

We have Great Pyrenees on our property to protect livestock (sheep, chickens) but my understanding is that donkeys are excellent guardians too.
Re: the 1785 (5?) document, I think it is a Poll Tax Receipt! (Quittance de la Capitation). Cool!
for a total of 20 livres, collected from the nobles by the diocese of Saint Brieuc's Saint Germain parish. But mister Alexandre Marie Le Can de la Ville-Portamour was replaced by Christophe Francois Roquancours as tax collector sometimes after these receipts were printed.
The music is sublime. Absolutely perfect.
I can’t say for sure but the shotgun shells were most likely to have been used for getting rid of birds 🦅. My grandfather had these huge fruit trees and garden and the birds would come to dinner time. He would get up on the roof of his barn and shoot no lethal noise bangers to scare them off. He always reused the shells so that’s why it looked so familiar for me. Nothing like a huge swarm of birds devouring your plums and cherries 🍒.
All the papers visible from 6:35 to 7:14 seem to be books covering various subjects taught in the school year 1922-1923 at a french army cavalry school. They cover a variety of topics, from learning the german language to history and thermodynamics. At least one is about some cavalry topic but the full title does not appear in the shot. They must have been edited and printed by that military school (as suggested by the fact that many share the same format and the same cover style) and were intended as reading material for the classes that were mandatory for the theoretical education of the officers. In the 1920s the cavalry was fazing out the old horse training and was transitioning to armored cars and tanks so this branch of service must have seemed quite appealing, as it offered a foot into the past and one into the future of land warfare. And it had as little as possible to do with that miserable and dreadful trench warfare for which infantry and artillery seemed destined to.

I just love your style for your chateau. Really suits you. So clean & crisp. I finally found the gumption to go work on a few neglected areas of my own garden. In a side yard when I moved in 11 yrs ago, I tried my hand at that square foot gardening. I planted 1 teeny weeny Greek oregano plant & various other wonderful plants. It is now an entire 25 foot x 4 foot expanse of Greek Oregano with the random pecan tree growing out of it an wild blackberry stickers. It was such a relief in the milder weather to get out in the garden and show that bitch who’s boss around here. 😂. Really enjoy your videos!!
Come to think of it: I could actually supply the entire Atlanta & Metro area Greek Community with their bouquets/starter plants of oregano. As it was- I made homemade herbed ricotta stuffed ravioli for the first time today & it turned out delicious with a sage, lemon sauce. Delicious!!!!

Love seeing all your animals in this vlog. Hopefully Dominic’s hoof can heel quickly. Learned something new about getting his hoof trimmed to help heal. Some desks can be disassembled which might make it easier to get into your office. It looks like a lovely spot with a great view I’m sure. Thanks for sharing 😍😘
Your chateau has such lovely floor boards which I envy. You two are hard workers but work away at your own pace and with great humour. I always enjoy a chuckle. But as someone else has already said…..your vlogs are long enough! But we will take whatever we can get!🥰

Next time use a plastic bag (ziplock type) to soak an animal’s foot. You can put the medication and water in the bag and give it a shake to mix. Make sure the bag is closed. You can then open the bag enough to put in the animal’s foot to soak. Once soaked you can empty the bag and toss it. It works for me. I must admit I’ve only used this method on cats and dogs.
All the papers etc in the attic are fascinating. It's hard to imagine someone that many years ago putting it all up there. I'd be really interested in what the handwritten letters have to say. The armour in the office is beautiful and huge! Was it left there? Or, how did you get it up there. The main staircase is so beautiful when you're walking upstairs. I would love it if the videos were a bit longer, hint hint.😉

I love all your pets! The attic finds are so exciting. I would be looking for a french speaking person to tell me what I have. Your vegetables look so good. Up in the roof top office why not build the desks up there or buy a put together kit desk, or folding tables. You have probably already thought of all this as you both are so amazing. I think you are going to have to go with an IKEA desk as they have screw on legs for easy assembly. I love the spiral staircase but I can see where it creates a whole lot of drama getting anything up the stairs. I hope your children are enjoying French school and can eventually translate the books and papers for you.

Wonderful find in the attic space. Been there, done it! Take your time, work through the papers in stages. I'm hoping you have some valuable documents there. Never forget sunlight is a great disinfectant. Best wishes!
PS: To soak a donkey's foot you need a minimum 10 ft diameter pond with a tie post in the middle, or enclosed by a corral. My grandfather stood his horses in such a pond for many hrs before trimming their hooves.

During winter tarp garden areas and this will leave you weed free come spring.
To find a beam get a coat hanger type wire. Bend a 3" 90 degree bend in it and place it up in the hole and turn it around to see if the end hits a beam. If the wire does not touch a beam take it out and lengthen the end you placed up in the hole and do another 365 degree sweep. You might have to drill another search hole but this keeps the hole drilling to the minimum. Good luck.
Ah, yes! Thanks for the tip...
Tip for hanging lighter weight fixtures from the ceiling, or heavy mirrors from the wall, use what is call a toggle bolt. They do not exert any stress on the wall other than the weight of what is being suspended from them.
If you’re hanging out later wait to fixture from the ceiling this will allow the fixture to hang from the lath behind the plaster ceiling and not put any stress on the plaster.
I would frame some of the old maps or other papers beautifully and hang them on the wall somewhere in the Chateau.

I love your videos! They are never boring, and are very interesting. It would be wonderful to have lots of land, lots of work but fulfilling. My husband and I have five acres which is enough for a large vegetable garden, an average of eight goats and around fourteen chickens and a rooster. Our great Pyrenees guard dog passed away recently from old age and we can't bear to get another one because I can't go through that again. It all keeps us busy and we enjoy it. I do a lot of canning, freezing, dehydrating to help save money on groceries. So I understand a little about how hard you both work. Looking forward to more videos! Janice from Arkansas USA

We had cats and one dog growing up. Whether conscious of it or not, our mother was showing us how to nurture, protect, be responsible for creatures. They were spoiled (shrimp on Fridays). l am exactly the same with my cats(minus fresh shrimp). Thank you for sharing your projects, discoveries with us. The freshly-plastered hall looks wonderful. (Perfect indoor stalking ground for cats.) Always appreciate seeing the bounty of your garden.

Wonder, is there a difference between woodworm and wormwood, as we have on our house trim. I assumed ours is coming apart from water erosion. Certainly a task to fix. The German papers or maps were intriguing as didn't Germany take over France during the great wars in the early 1900's? Could German soldiers have taken over the chateau? I like Lincoln's choice of pants ....very MC Hammer couture ! as a fellow former NorCal ..any luck finding good sourdough or are you guys resolved to baking your own. Back in the mid 90's I uprooted my family from California and bought an 80 acre hilltop orchard home in the Hudson Valley. We kept it until 2012 , the experience changed my life forever , mostly for the better .
Some of your trials & tribulations hit home with me, as we had to restore our farmhouse as well , no donkeys, just lots of dogs and I wouldn't have traded that life for anything. We still live in the same area, 1/2 mile away from the orchard but settled into a very small Hamlet with a 1/2 acre plot.
Sadly, I killed my starter :(

Always enjoyable! I had a horse & the best way to draw an abscess in the hoof, is 'warm' water & Epsom Salts! It's really difficult to get them to stand for any length of time, but if you raise/hold up the opposite foot, it's difficult for them to remove the offending hoof from the bucket! You could give intermittent rest periods in between?

Attic treasures need rescue to down stairs ,history documents to the place ,vacume out these attics to store infrequently used items.

Dominick’s hoof soaking might go easier with a pail vs the low-sided basin. Once you wrangle his leg into the pail it should keep him from roaming around. (I had a sheep once, Matilda, with a hoof ailment that required soaking.) Maybe a pile of hay beside the pail to distract him?

You could make some sort of boot that would hold liquid and somehow attach to boot to the donkey to soak the foot. Yes, I too would recommend a hoof trimmer. They can fix all sorts of hoof issues. II too watch hoof trimming vblogs.
Having three dogs, three cats, five roosters and countless hens I understand the late night Google MD sessions. I think they must have a setting for stressed out critter moms that causes all ailments to end in sudden pain filled death!
I got baby goats in the spring and a fee weeks ago one started having diarrhea. Goats can go downhill really fast so it terrified me. I asked my husband the night before if he could check on her before work so that if she was dead I wouldn't be the one to find her. I had dreams all night that she died. She's fine and it turned out to be a different kind of parasite than what was killed by their regular dewormer. It's been an incredibly wet summer where I live and it makes fighting parasites a difficult job especially for goats under a year old.

Ah weeds in the garden... my favorite way of meditation: pulling weeds by hand! My three small beds are twice my arm length in dimension... but lately I'm using cardboard around the plants with grass clippings on top. No sunlight reaching the covered soil, much less weeds. Now what to do with my 1989 receipts?
