    Fun Fact:
    In the Part with the choir (12:42 for this video) you can hear a ticking clock in the background that seems just a little to slow. Instead of 60bpm as it should be it plays at 42bpm. 42 The answer to everything.
    Second Fun Fact:
    The song is pretty much exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds. As 40 is equal to two-thirds of 60 this makes the song 6.66 minutes long (2/3 = 66.6/100) . This is a nice reference since the character of this theme is sometimes called "The Devil".
    I absolutely love this theme.

    18:30 I'm so glad to see someone freak out about this delivery as much as I do. Guilty Gear has so many wicked deliveries to such odd lyrics that it never ceases to amaze me. I think they come about due to Daisuke (the writer) and Naoki (the singer) both being Japanese and separately learning English primarily through Western music before working with each other, because as far as I'm aware nobody else is able to do quite what Guilty Gear does in this department

    This character has been in the background of the series for 25+ years pushing most of the story/serving as the major antagonist and Strive was the first time he's been put front and center to lay his cards on the table; In a lot of ways Strive is the culmination and resolution of all those story arcs for most of the cast. Asuka's theme had to live up to not just the hype behind him but also all that history, and I think it nails it.

  • @CodeNameX001
    @CodeNameX001 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +40

    This character is a villain who has been teased at since the 90s, who's directly tied to the main plot of Guilty Gear and essentially set the story into motion. His DLC release coincided with the series' 25th anniversary. And for all these years, we only knew him by the name "That Man".
    If Arcsys didn't go HARD with Asuka, I don't think the fans would ever forgive them, lol

  • @michaeldeucalion9283
    @michaeldeucalion9283 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +139

    So Asuka's story is that he was an apprentice of the man who became Happy Chaos, so there's definitely some similarities in that. His story follows him using the Tome of Origin, a book capable of answering any question, giving any kind of information you would ask, and the song talks of the awesome responsibility and duty that he feels, but the song also has bits where it speaks of him trying to stay human being exposed to that, and being willing to possibly destroy the world and sacrifice himself for the happiness of others. The parts about the sun are him trying to remain human and familiar while also trying to defy fate and carve a life for the people he cares about after indirectly causing the end of the world, and hoping that even though things can never be the same, they can still find happiness. This is contrasted with Happy Chaos and Drift, as while Chaos believes he can be the storm that will bring peace, while Asuka/That Man believes that humanity is strong enough to change, and save, themselves. This is also the first time he's been playable in any of the games, and we didnt even know his identity until a couple years back, and Guilty Gear's been going since '98. The song is also 6.66 minutes long, which is a reference to how he saw himself to be the "devil" and compromise his morals in order to help people.

    Also, about the guilty gear franchise, all things considered, it's not actually that popular. anime fighting games aren't usually very big and I would say that guilty gear is on the bigger side, but comparing it to a fighting game like street fighter, it doesn't have nearly the same sales or influence. it took them about a years time to finally hit 1 million sales on guilty gear strive, the most recent game, back in 2022, and none of the previous titles were super big. but the music was incredible all the same

      That's the thing what makes an Anime fighter? Because, I'm sorry but all of the old Japanese pixel art graphics fighting games look pretty anime style to me. At least when they were in their pixel art forms. Like when I see Sol Badguy and Ryu in pixel art form, I don't detect an art style difference that would lead me to say one is anime and the other is not. Do they have different art styles? Sure, but are they so different for me to say one is clearly western and the other anime? No. The fact that Death Battle had the joke fighter from Street Fighter and Hercule Satan in the same video, and they both looked in place with each other so that I didn't think of them of being from different cultures art. In fact, the Toriyama style didn't really clash with the more standard style of manga/anime/Japanese comics and animated drawn art. So again how is Street Fighter not in that style when it doesn't even clash with one of the stranger versions of that style?

      Guilty Gear wears it's inspirations on it's sleeve, sometimes literally.
      For instance, the main character is named Sol Badguy, real name Frederick Bulsara, and his most famous theme songs are both called "Keep Youself Alive" and wears a headband that says "Rock You". He's one big Freddie Mercury reference, but he also has attacks named for bands like "Napalm Death" and songs like "All Guns Blazing" by Judas Priest.

    I have to say I genuinely love that you stop and start so much. If any basic react channel did it it'd be annoying, but you add SO MUCH to the experience by pointing out things, comparing it to other styles and bands, or geeking out about some strange choice in the composition. What's even better is that despite not analyzing the characters these songs are attached to you end up saying things that fit them PERFECTLY, calling out details for the instrumentation that I'd never, ever catch as a decade removed novice of playing music.
    Tony, you kick ass and I'm glad I found your channel. Keep doing what you're doing lol

    This song definently is deserving of such a lengthy analysis. Honestly with Guilty Gear reactions on TH-cam I struggle sometimes to stay focused on what the person listening is doing cuz I just drift into daydream mode from the music. Being aware of that now tho I was able to mostly keep it together for this one lmao. This song is so tremendous it's insane. To put it in perspective, there's this other Guilty Gear song called Let Me Carve Your Way, aka Zatos theme, and it's 6 minutes long. The first 5 minutes is pretty much just heavy metal with very rageful confused lyrics, but then right at the 5 minute mark it transitions into a beautiful piano ballad accompanied by lyrics that strike at the very core of Zato as a character, with a revelation that defines his entire story. This final section, is nearly impossible to hear in game because of the pace of matches. In order to naturally hear it you'd have to be really going down to the wire every round on the timer, and additionally have a double KO happen, which in certain circumstances grants an additional final round on top of the usual maximum 3 rounds. The thought of being a Zato player who loves the character, having presumably the match of their LIFE to get to the point of hearing that section naturally in game, it's probably one of the biggest emotional power-ups you could recieve in a videogame. And Asukas theme is almost a full minute longer than even that. The final section of Asukas theme was truly meant to be an outside of game experience, it's a secret to anyone who just plays the game normally. It's fanservice of the highest caliber and I honestly love it. Asuka throughout the series has been pretty much THE antagonist. His most known alias is LITERALLY "That Man". And yet it took them 25 years to make him a playable character and they went absolutely all out on his inclusion. His character design completely boiled down is basically the concept of a normal man with the power of a universe in his hands, and his gameplay and theme in Strive definently highlights that aspect to him for me.

    Please do Elphelt's theme "Extras" as well! Surprisingly, it's Strive's first vocal track not featuring Naoki or AISHA.
    Elphelt is arguably, at least in my opinion, the most referential character of the entire cast; naturally her newest kawaii-metal (think BabyMetal/Poppy, roughly a nu-metal derivative I guess) inspired incarnation reflects this very well.
    I'd suggest you at least listen to Marionette, her previous theme, once beforehand; not only is it a fantastic homage to Slash's (Guns 'n Roses/Velvet Revolver) sound, it's also jam-packed with musical references, among others, and specifically the one you'll miss, a throw back to Diva from an even older game which serves to acknowledge her heritage, so to say, and her sister Ramlethal.
    Her new theme, and third design for that matter, continues this legacy; as she did with Diva in Marionette, Extras does with Marionette. More broadly, beyond the face value, her theme pays homage to the cultural melting pot that is kawaii-metal for a lack of better terms. Elphelt will reference One-Winged Angel (Sephiroth theme, Final Fantasy) and Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood) in the same breath, akin to how the genre neatly blends Japanese idol culture and several flavours of metal.
    Elphelt is my favourite character; I enjoy her easy to spot references, Appetite for Destruction is literally the first record I ever bought as a child, but it's the hidden depth that truly sets her apart for me. Her bridal motive subverts expectations, but only if you care to look past her seemingly shallow facade; I argue truly inline with November Rain, memorable for it's bridal motive yet actually about the burden of unrequited love.
    Extras is her shedding this facade, she still archetypically seeks companionship but at the same time she also fully embraces herself through her solo career; she'll once again, true to herself, acknowledge Ram (Necessary Discrepancy), but this time around she's aiming way higher, invoking the "Songbird Supreme" and the "Queen of Soul" along the way, as she stands on her own and actually solo sings her own theme. From her new design to the fact her theme has a single vocalist, another masterclass in subverting expectations; metaphorically memorable for all the wrong reasons, in line with November Rain.

    Asuka is very analytical. He has a tome that allows him to do basically anything with magic. He also cares really deeply for his friends. This causes him to accidentally make the gears, a race of superhumans that can't die and have incredible powers, and the gear commander, which together fight the human world in a battle called the crusades. At the end he understands that he made a mistake and tries to repent for it.
    I love Asuka's story and it fits his theme very well.

      I just adore that the near extinction of the human race in GG was because "local socially awkward scientist tries to save his best friends' relationship, causes Armageddon in the process."
      Like, so much of the story would be truncated if he was just able to sit down with Sol after the gear surgery and say "Hey, I made you a gear so you'd live long enough to see Aria cured. We still cool?"

    So the familiarity you hear that orchestra opening is somewhat similar to the swing rift at Happy Chaos theme, Drift. Drift and The Gravity have an excellent chemistry with each other given that their respective characters are teacher and apprentice. They’re almost foils to each other I’m not only structure and direction, but narratively as well given that they’re treating as opposing answers to the same question.

    I'm sure you've had other people tell you this already, but the entirety of Guilty Gear really is a love letter to rock.
    You may or may not ever experience the gameplay side of things, but this series is also sort of the Pink Floyd of fighting games, if that's a fair comparison: It's influence via direct audience is absolutely no joke, but it has had an IMMENSE impact on the people creating OTHER fighting games. Little pieces of Guilty Gear are all over the genre now, and I think that's awesome.

    In response to your little tangent at the end: yes, the game itself is very good. However, one complaint many people have is that the length of the matches is generally much shorter than the length of a song. An infamous example of this is the song “Mirror of the World” which has a minute-long intro that’s very mellow, which can be underwhelming if you’re expecting the music to pump you up during the fight.
    There’s also some really good endings for some songs that you will likely never hear in a match, like in “Let Me Carve Your Way”. It’s actually a bit sad that some people might only hear 2-3 minutes of some songs unless they specifically seek them out elsewhere.

    Asuka is a man with far too much power in his hands who tried to do right by his friends on many occasions, which back fired spectacularly, he was the main villain of the series until the last game, as all the choices he had to contend with were horrible in the first place, he learned magic from the man that will later become the Omnipotent trickster God that is Happy Chaos when magic was starting to replace traditional technology, having access to that much power, he tried to save his friend Aria from a desease and ended up turning her and her husband Frederick into the Gears (Kaijus basically) Justice and Sol Badguy, Justice would make it so the entire population of Japan would turn into Gears, levelling the entire world, so in one of the most crucial moments of the series, Asuka took control of Justice and used her to blow up the entirety of Japan off the face of the Earth.
