    It's my time to be the lore girl here.
    Fausts song here is a representation of his broken psyche, after a patient of his dieing was falsely pinned on him (killed by Zato-1), Fausts mind broke. He went from being a miracle healer to a psycho murderer, unable to see that his new way of saving everyone from suffering is not the best way to go.
    This song is his broken mind coming to terms with what he's done, knowing it's wrong and trying to harmonise all these different voices to be the one true Faust.
    All of the religious metaphors here is him knowing that he can't save everyone. Symbols of peace and comfort used to juxtapose the harm and destruction Faust can bring. He knows he can be the saviour of the world, but doesn't know if he deserves to be.

      @Whodadman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      @@DANCERcow While you are correct that this technically happened quite some time ago, there are a couple of factors to consider:
      Firstly, this is the first time Faust has had a vocal theme, so there hasn’t exactly been an opportunity to explore this concept musically in the past.
      Secondly, many themes in Strive seem to detail the character’s journey as a whole rather than solely focusing on more recent events.
      Thirdly, Faust’s character in Strive places a particular emphasis on regressing to his past roots, so his theme might be intended to mirror this.

    Great video, as always! I forgot the timestamp exactly, but you made a comment saying it's probably not as surprising to hear the stuff Daisuke Ishiwatari does with the Guilty Gear Strive soundtrack when you're used to listening to his work. The thing is, most of the really wild stuff he's done with that soundtrack is a totally new direction compared to his work on the previous two games' soundtracks (Guilty Gear XX and Xrd). So for most of us, it was just as surprising hearing the Strive soundtrack for the first time as it is for you!
    I think you might find it interesting to check out some more of the vocal songs from Xrd, or some songs from XX to get an idea of the progression of his style and see some of the leitmotifs that appear in a character's themes throughout the games. Specifically, checking out Ky's theme from XX, "Holy Orders (Be Just or Be Dead)" before listening to his theme from Strive, "Roar of the Spark" would be an interesting comparison.
    Been loving hearing your reactions to a ton of my favorite songs in Guilty Gear and various anime OPs. If you eventually end up listening to the whole Strive soundtrack, I'd love to hear what your top 3 songs are.

    i will be the context paragraph guy here. Faust used to be a world renowned surgeon until a young child under his operation died during an operation. he had never experienced a failure like this before, so the mishap caused him to go insane and on a murderous rampage. after the main story of one of the earlier games, he came to his senses and decided that killing himself was the best way to atone for his mistakes, until he found that someone else caused the operation mishap; not him. he then decided his resolve after that to always strive to save others, even if he could never be a licensed practitioner ever again. He would work outside of the established medical system, roaming, asking for nothing in return for his actions. he also somehow got some space magic thing but i have no idea where he got that and i cant find any information in my quick searches so if you care go ahead and look up more yourself.

    10:08 Faust's "horror aesthetic" is new to this game. In the past few games he was almost entirely comic relief, and the goofy singing here is pretty similar to how he used to talk. Being familiar with the character, I didn't find the performance entirely surprising, as it probably represents his old personality. Now, saying that I "expected" it however, would be a bit of a stretch.

  • @kaialone
    @kaialone 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    The interesting thing about this song is that the three distinct verses seem to represent the three distinct personas Faust takes on throughout the series!
    Faust was a highly regarded surgeon, almost to a worship-like degree- as a result, he had a mental breakdown when he couldn't save the life of one little girl and became a serial killer (he was partially hallucinating that he was still helping people.)
    The first verse, low energy and ominous, is him as "Dr. Baldhead" (his real name) while he was a seriel killer- this ia how he appeared in the very first game.
    Afterwards, he regains his lucidity and becomes ridden with guilt- he takes on the "Faust" persona, a goofy, prideful, but very kind doctor and continues to help folks under that guise, and idealized representation of the doctor he thinks he shouldve been. This is the second verse, high energy and pompous.
    Finally, in the latesr game, Faust reaches another breaking point, coming to accept the fact that he can't keep pretending he isnt suffering underneath the facade, and that his latent self-hatred is holding him back. He takes on the form you see in this video, and tries to care of others as well as himself from now on. This is the third verse, low energy and somber, but leads to hopeful triumph.

    the best part about GGST and their community is their appreciation of music. When the game was relatively new i mained Faust, and this one time when i was against Zato we both stopped at the last part of his theme. We rematched and my opponent stopped during the "radiohead" part of this song and start again when the build up starts.

    I loved that you got Faith No More instantly - this track has a lot of DNA from the title track of their 1989 album The Real Thing, and Naoki's delivery of "blue, red, and black paranoia" is more or less a direct quote of Mike Patton singing "don't know if I'll ever cry" in the chorus of "From Out of Nowhere," the first track on that same album. Daisuke is out here cooking up the tastiest musical feasts with ingredients from 35 years ago and it's *AMAZING.*

    I've been waiting for you to mention Faith No More during these. Personally I hear a LOT of Mike Patton stuff in the Strive OST, a lot of different FNM albums, Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, I have to imagine Daisuke Ishiwatari was a huge Mike Patton fan. Also as a quick aside, you mention Hetfield style vocals, I don't know if anyone has told you yet but Naoki Hashimoto got his music career started in a thrash band from the 80's called Outrage, so that 80's thrash sound is a huge part of his musical vocabulary. Daisuke was of course a huge Outrage fan and named MANY things in Guilty Gear after the band and their songs, and of course getting Naoki to be the vocalist for Guilty Gear music eventually.

    This is one of the few songs that is really hard to understand even with an understanding of the story. Some of it might actually just be nonsense fueled by Fausts trauma.
    There was once a brilliant doctor called Dr Baldhead who made miracles happen with his medical applications of magic. He had a patient, a young girl who was terminally ill, and he was blocked from performing an experimental procedure that would save her life. He went through with it anyways in secret but the girl died during it for seemingly no reason. The grief drove him insane and he went on a serial murder spree until he was caught and locked away. He was temporarily let free to compete in the 2nd Holy Order Selection tournament and during the battles the cheers of the spectators reached him and snapped him out of it. He felt horrible for what he had done and ran off to find a place to end his life but before he could someone approached him and told him that his patients death had not been his fault, but a psyop orchestrated by a 3rd party. Dr. Baldhead decided to keep living in this moment to uncover the conspiracy. He disappeared from public knowledge but around the same time rumors of an unlicensed miracle doctor wearing a bag over his head called Faust (wink wink) made the rounds. He was travelling the world treating anyone he came across for free. Faust is probably the 3rd most powerful magic wielder in the series behind Happy Chaos and Asuka, and the fact that he mainly uses it medicinally doesn't take away from the impressiveness of his skill at all. He's been a key player in multiple world changing events. Eventually he found himself in a situation involving saving another little girl, this time Delilah, the little sister of Bedman. Not wanting to lose anyone ever again especially not someone so similar to the patient he lost, he overtaxed himself really hard during the mission to save her and went back to "square one" as he was calling it, and that resulted in the zombie-like state he's in in Strive. He's alive, and he's still him in there, just as compassionate and funny and silly as he always was, but he's just very scrambled up seemingly.
    By the way the truth about the conspiracy was that Zato assasinated his patient, and was hired by a group called the Conclave to stop the procedure because Baldhead was likely going to discover the secret to resurrection during the procedure, a secret that the Conclave wanted to stay a secret for the purpose of their own schemes.
    I like how this song doesn't resolve quite as hard as other Strive songs. The only part that changes at the end is "joy grief fun paranoia", which to me is a line that communicates that Faust is still in there despite his current state. Most Strive characters are over the hump on their character arcs, but Faust is still on his road, I don't think his story is over yet.
    It was just announced a few days ago that Guilty Gear will be getting an anime adaptation set after the events of Strive. Maybe he'll appear again there and develop more.

    Hi ! Could you make a video on the Kingdom Heart 3 menu ost. I think you might be pleasantly surprised. Even without knowing the game you can feel a sort of "nostalgic slap". This is clearly one of the best themes in all video games combined.

    Saw a comment on a previous guilty gear video that showed the ones you havent done from strive but believe it or not, there are even more vocal banger soundtracks from the previous game(s).(Xrd is techincally one game but its major "updates" are counted as the next game in the series by some people because they changed the title of the game.) These are all of the vocal tracks from the entire series. (just a heads up, The Disaster of Passion, Love the Subhuman Self, Perfection Can't Please Me, and The Town Inside Me are all sung by Aisha only, who was the female voice in Nessesary Descrepancy alongside Naoki. These songs are slightly different from the style of the ones Naoki is on, but are still great nonetheless.) All of them are composed by Daisuke Ishiwatari, who is the creator and mainman behind almost everything in the franchise.

    Yo Tony, I think it would be a really fun idea to read the wiki on these character OSTs before listening. It should be a 5 minute read at most and it would give additional context to the piece. Just throwing it out there in case you're interested, I think it would make the video a tad longer which I think is worth it personally.

    Hey Tony! I’m not sure if you’ve seen or reacted to Bocchi the Rock but I think that as a music director and lover you would enjoy listening to some of the music. Whether you react to the anime or not I believe that reacting to some of the OSTs would make for some great content. In a nutshell, the story is about a socially awkward teenage girl who loves music, however she lacks social skills and real world experience. She always dreamt of playing in a band but she’s too nervous to express herself around others. As a result she turns to posting videos online, however, as an incoming high-school student she sees her big chance to make a good first impression with her peers. It is a coming of age story as Bocchi learns to openly express her passion for music, chase her dreams of playing in a band while navigating through her life as a high-schooler. Definitely a feel-good story, hella funny imo the comedy is written super well and of course AMAZING music. Just a suggestion though either way keep killin it, you make great content brother, keep it up!

      @@DrumRollTonyReacts Awesome! I figured you might have, Bocchi, Your Lie in April, Sound Euphonium, all great. I’m glad to hear that you’re on top of your shit man, I think you really hit your stride incorporating anime into your musical analysis. Not only because you reach an entire new demographic but also because there’s some damn good music as well. The only way is up from here, keep at it!
