How to Memorize ANY Number - Remember Long Numbers

    Remember any number using this memorization technique from "The Memory Book", by Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas. This is something I learned from an early hardcover edition of the book several years ago. I've never forgotten the system, and have used it to set bank account numbers and phone numbers into memory.
    Think of each number as a consonant SOUND, using this chart:
    1 = T, D
    2 = N
    3 = M
    4 = R
    5 = L
    6 = J, SH, CH, soft G
    7 = K, Hard C, Hard G
    8 = F, V, PH
    9 = P, B
    0 = Z, S, Soft C
    Commit the above 10 number/sound associations to memory.
    VOWELS (A,E,I,O,U) have no numerical value, and go between the consonants to form the word.
    The letters W, H, and Y are treated the same as vowels (except when H follows certain consonants, like "SH", "CH", or "PH".).
    Example: The number 7394 can be remembered with the word "camper".
    Explanation: 7 = Hard C, 3 = M, 9 = P, 4 = R, and vowels go between. "Kimber" is an alternative word for the same set of numbers.

    I used this trick in the 9th grade to memorize 60 numbers of pi for a contest. However, I forgot to write the 1 in 3.14_59, so according to my math teacher, I only got three numbers, despite getting the remaining 56 numbers correct. So the runner up won, and she only got ten numbers memorized. I'm still mad about it to this day.

      Well, if it still bugs you, maybe just take some time to learn a hundred digits and this time you won't forget the 1, so you can finally have some peace of mind. Or just focus on how you helped the runner up to have one of the best days of her life. We all know you had the trick down pat anyway.

      Do at least one thing each day that makes you smile. If you can't manage that, give someone else your smile.
      A smile is a parasympathetic emotion. The muscles that move your face into a smile trigger the emotions that make you smile.
      Now I don't mean a fake cheesy grin, but a genuine smile. Smile at someone else, they'll normally smile back automatically, triggering a little bit of happy for them. You also get a little bit of happy from your smile as well as the reinforcement from their smile.
      Not saying this will fix your life, but a day with an extra smile in it, is a better day for anyone.

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      What Maxx is saying is true. I've thought about doing videos on "happiness" before, as I deal with low mood and depression regularly. The "Facial Feedback Hypothoses" (maybe I said that right) is this deal where you smile with your mouth AND eyes - genuinely - and your body releases some of the chemicals that would normally cause you to smile. It's like a reverse effect. You can't (easily) turn on a switch and be happy, but you CAN control your smile, instantly, and that has some bearing on how you feel.
      We might could also get into amino acids and things (I take L-Tyrosine, for example) that are neurotransmitter precursors... which you're making available to your body so that it can manufacture some of the things you need, like dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, etc. I've got a neuroscientist friend who has been educating me on this for a while now. Fascinating topic! I've never done a video on it because depression and anxiety can be really touchy subjects for some people. :/

      @@TheCrafsManIf you draw a smiley face with your finger on a blank wall you will smile even though you can not see it and every time you pass that wall you will see a smiley face & smile. If anyone witness you doing it they will smile to & when they pass they will smile. If you believe in Karma a smile is worth passing around. I believe you do this in every video you put out. You help me to be happy, thank you! 💕 The "smile" works, even when talking on the phone.

      Happiness is a choice we make at every moment. Being grateful for what we have, water, food, hands that function, eyes that see, everything great and small.. rather than worrying over things we want. Embracing every challenge as a new adventure and taking it on, rather than as an obstacle we choose not to overcome. I could go on, but I wont. Just remember... it all begins with you choosing, then step by step, making it happen.

    1st things 1st. Hello Crafsman:-) hope you're doing great! :-) My mom taught me how to spell sorta like that. She would take the hard words and tell a short story using each letter. Like your "tables not my Fred nary" an unforgettable even stupid story. eg. "Metamorphosis" = met a mor pho sis= met a more 4 sisters. "Tropical"= Toads Run On Ponds I Carry A Lazy tadpole" But it's like you said it still takes a bit of practice, knowing where & when to drop or add #'s & ltrs. But once you've got your little formula pocketed it will never fail you. Take care and be blessed this Easter brother!

    1: Toes - T/D
    2: Knees - N
    3: “muscles” of your legs - M
    4: rear - R
    5: Love handles - L
    6: Shoulders - Sh/Ch/J
    7: Collar - K/G
    8: Face - F/V
    9: Point (on the top of your head): P/B
    0: Ceiling - S/Z
    We used these for scripture references and I still remember verses from over 10 years ago because of tricks like this.

    Hey crafsman, please don’t mind the criticism. Your a genuine gift to TH-cam and I look forward to all your videos. I’m dealing with a really bad depression right now and your content is a very relaxing and comforting escape from it for awhile. You just be yourself. Not to mention you have way more comments supporting this video that disliking it. I know it can be easy to focus in on the negativity. But look at all the wonderful support you’ve received just for being yourself and sharing something you thought was interesting ^.^

    You start getting that math stress and craftsman brings it all back to chill with Leroy Brown (best man in the whole town). No seriously though, good vid - too bad it wasn’t 242 , you could have done “tables not my friend now” 😹

    Tony Buzan takes this method further by making a grid with them numbers on the X and Y axis.
    You can then remember 100 things in order.
    Then he makes a next grid and then you can store 100 grids of 100 items.
    He calls it SEMM3, You should check it out!

    • @DirtyRobot
      @DirtyRobot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By the way.
      When you use this method it is best to let your imagination run wild.
      So with the example shown, you would want to imagine many giant tables all around the place.
      Then on each table is a big sign saying "NOT MY" and a picture of yourself in a red circle with a line thu it.
      Then one one table at the back are two guys you know playing cards. Fred and Narry . Fred waves you over for a game and Narry points to the sign and remarks "Not his table"
      With more time you can make a better version but as he said it was on the fly...
      I woulda.... Tables - Note - Mother - Dinner

    I just started dabbling in mold and figure making. I'm pretty impatient when it comes to art so I'm always hopping between projects - painting to molding to cake decorating to stenciling, etc. I go on TH-cam, start watching videos and the TH-cam algorithm does its thing; its awful bad thing of suggesting dumb videos/channels. I feel like that algorithm finally pointed me in the right direction; I subscribed a few days ago and you're already one of my favorite channels ever, not just art-related, but overall. Keep up the awesome job sir.

    I know you were talking about memorizing or some such,. but all I "heard" was. "how long has it been since you had a Fireball? Just look at 'em laying all around here." And then something about a "piece of cake." What! No vowels! What about folks living in the country with a zip code like, I dunno, EIEIO? I seem to have a vague memory of that book, thanks Crafsman!

    Next video: how to menorise a long phrase

  • @mattl3023

    I have used this system since 1995 to memorise tens of thousands of numbers of varying lengths. (Not all at once!) I, too, learned the system from Harry Lorayne. I'm sad that he's no longer with us.
    I will say this. This system as presented is incomplete. How so? The consonants h, y and w have been left aside left to languish. This is a real shame because they can be used. I have assigned h and y to the number 6 and w to the number 8. This opens up thousands of extra words that can help you to remember numbers. It gives much more flexibility. For instance, 658 could be hollow, shallow or yellow and not just shelf or shelve. 858 could be follow, fellow wallow, well off etc. Without 8 as w, what can you make? Valve and fluff. 767 could be kayak. 761 could be coyote or cahoot. 65 could be holy, hole, hello, hail, halo, Yale, yell, etc. 66 could be yoyo or haha or Hey, you! rather than just judge or shush. 87 could be week, wick, wack, woke, wok., we go etc. 857 could be walk, whelk, we like etc. 758 could be glow, claw rather than just cliff and glove. Th as 1 is also super useful as there are many words with th in them. I don't remember Harry talking much about th as 1in the Memory Power system but I see he refers to it in the book you show. 814 could be weather, feather, father etc. 1 as 'the', it, they, 10 as this or these or it's is likewise super useful.
    Anyway, I have learned by application that including these extra consonant sounds gives you access to all the (real) pronouns in the English language - you (6), we (8), he (6), him (63), her (64), they (1) them (13). So, 6821in series could be 'you want/went...'. 1563 could be 'tell him ...'. 01163 would be 'I said to him ...' etc. Without these additions, you're far more limited in what you can do.
    Try it and see for yourself.
    I was planning to write to 64 542 (Harry Lorayne) himself and tell him about this but 60 2 5274 81 0, 28. (He's no longer with us, now).
    940 9 1 71! (Praise be to God!) He gave us our brains and memory.
    Thanks posting this video.

    Harry Lorayne made a lot of money for selling the same memory system by creating different titles for the books, targeting different audiences. Great marketing ploy.

    While it may be less useful as numbers get longer, a method I use is to picture a standard keypad (1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 0, like on a calculator, a cash machine, or the numpad on your keyboard), and picture the motion I'd trace to press the keys...

    This is great for people that cant remember large sequences, I only need it for small ones. My strange brain... I can remember very large sequences after seeing them just once if I say it out loud once. But lordy lordy don't ask me to remember 1,2,3,4, or 5 numbers. I just cant retain those smaller numbers. Its a pain in the rump, because I forget pin numbers all of the time. I'll have to try this method for that. Thanks Crafsman. You rock, as always.
