Playing my composition "The Persimmon" for an audience of horses

  • Recorded at my parents' horse barn in sub-zero weather. Look at the hammers to see how frozen/sluggish my 1903 Heintzman piano is! I wrote this piece in 2011, and it was titled by my friend, composer-pianist Vincent M. Johnson.
    It's been a while since I've uploaded with any regularity, so I wanted to offer an update on me and my plans:
    This year I've returned to finish the last bits of my university studies, the non-music courses. I want to complete my degree-Bachelor of Music / piano major-so that I can take on a teaching position: specifically, music theory and arranging at a local college. Ultimately, my dream is to weave together a combined career of: musician/composer/producer; piano technician/maker; and, music educator.
    Shortly before I returned to studies, I had totally disassembled my home piano's action for rebuilding. Since I've been working full-time hours running my piano technician business and being a student, there's been limited opportunity to assemble my own piano, record on others, or produce any new music.
    That said, I look forward to building this channel into something bigger as my school schedule eases up. My tentative plan is to devote, say, every Monday to music, scheduling a video release every 4th Monday. Time will tell.
    I want to give special thanks to those who've chosen to support me on Patreon (patreon.com/maxpiano). I equally appreciate those of you who have supported me in other ways, with your interest, comments, music, and friendship. Each of my videos will always be freely available on this channel.
    If you've made it this far, thanks for reading, and here's to good music ahead.

    I love it! :) Your original rags are lovely: they have that authentic 10's atmosphere but they never sound like imitations. One question: the second chord of the A strain doesn't sound like the Eb major that's written down; do you play a G major instead?

    • @maxkeenlyside
      @maxkeenlyside  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your compliments. :) You are correct, I do play a G7 chord there! Truth be told, I haven't gone over the score of this piece more than a handful of times since I published it a decade ago. I always maintain compositions in my head as "set arrangements" of sorts, but over time, I find little details often change, consciously and subconsciously, for better or worse. In this case, I think I was probably inspired to harmonize it this way because I've been playing James Booker's version of "Sunny Side of the Street" lately. It opens with Eb - G7 - Ab!

    You must have some tough fingers if you can play that crisply without missing notes! My hands get stiff really quickly if the keys of the piano I'm playing are cold, when i did my live stream from The Barn Door then by the end of it my hands were sore as heck and hurt for the rest of the day!

    • @maxkeenlyside
      @maxkeenlyside  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thankfully, the touch of this piano is extremely light! It's lost a lot of felt-mass from the hammers over the years, making it have the light touch and a too-bright tone.

    • @maxkeenlyside
      @maxkeenlyside  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good eye! This setup is very common in Canadian pianos from the 1880s through the 1980s. We call them dowel capstans.

    • @PiotrBarcz
      @PiotrBarcz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maxkeenlyside Dowel capstans, interesting! I just learned a new piano term :D

    • @PiotrBarcz
      @PiotrBarcz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maxkeenlyside Is this setup more durable or is it just easier to make?

    • @maxkeenlyside
      @maxkeenlyside  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PiotrBarcz Sticker actions are definitely more work: several more sets of 88 flanges to space/travel/regulate friction. Plus capstan screws to push on the sticker! Dowel capstans are durable and easy, but unlike stickers or rocker capstans, the pivoting motion of the key makes them pull back-to-front on the whippen. I recently tuned a 1970s Mason & Hamlin with a sticker action! Modern factories tend to use direct-contact or dowel capstans for their shorter and taller models.

    • @maxkeenlyside
      @maxkeenlyside  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heintzman certainly built a good enough piano that this one sounds nice even in disrepair! I can't wait to eventually hear it after I do the restringing, new hammers, etc. And thanks! By the half-tenths do you mean the sixths? I have enjoyed them in your playing as well - I hear you start with a 5th and climb up to a 6th.

    • @PiotrBarcz
      @PiotrBarcz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maxkeenlyside I wouldn't mess with the hammers if I was you, they sounds so nice and bright but I bet new strings would do wonders! And yes, I meant the sixths, for people who can't span a tenth it's the best alternative. I usually climb up from a fifth to imitate the tenth bass lines in stride piano pieces. I also heard you use the same method in your rendition of The Pride OF Bucktown which rang a bell for some reason, I feel like I heard that walk up a very long time ago!
