    Over the past year or so, I've become convinced that this is the best Joplin rag.

      Vincent It's good but I don't agree, I would put a bunch above this one, weeping willow, the ragtime dance, magnetic rag, maple leaf... Altough the last section is super fun to play and you can speed it up pretty easily, that has to be one of the best he made

    You play Joplin so great because you are not trying to impress just let it sing. My favorite player of this genre anywhere.

    everything you play on this piano sounds amazing, it reminds me of my Kingsbury piano (c.1908)

      @@maxkeenlyside Sounds pretty good for a piano that's over a hundred years old! Did you have to put some work into it to make it playable or was it already in good condition? Also did you tune this in semi-tone flat? I imagine the string pins are loose.

    I have to add another comment. I play this rag myself and would love to be able to play it this well. The chording you put to it is wonderful and gives it a richness not found in the simplistic way it was written. Very pleasant to the ear. Thanks.

    How's the action (heavy, sluggish,or light and responsive.

    • @maxkeenlyside
      @maxkeenlyside  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rather light, but slightly springy because of the dampers and vellum hinges.

  • @PiotrBarcz

    I still wonder how the piano has this odd twangy sound that makes it sound like the strings are made of nylon. Any ideas on what it could be?

    • @user-cj6pe3vy3b
      @user-cj6pe3vy3b 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve heard as time goes on, piano hammers get “grooves” on them giving them that twangy sound, but I have no idea what the science behind that is 😂

    • @PiotrBarcz
      @PiotrBarcz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-cj6pe3vy3b My thought is that the hammers are grooved but the strings are also really gunked up.

    Do you plan on revoicing your piano or is that left alone for effect?

    • @maxkeenlyside
      @maxkeenlyside  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +MC_P_123 It's actually supposed to sound pretty much like that! I already resurfaced and voiced the hammers. Pianos were just built differently in 1850s London to what our modern ears are used to.

    • @mcp12300
      @mcp12300 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm interesting, I suppose comparing to the rest of a orchestra, pianos are pretty young, so much I suppose we can easily track its development.

    • @harrisonsteudlein8537
      @harrisonsteudlein8537 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Max Keenlyside Interesting to think that the piano is older than ragtime itself! Nice playing!

  • @comeontutan
    @comeontutan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your piano sounds differente after 0:13, is it because you voiced it and tuned it before recording the right version?

    • @maxkeenlyside700
      @maxkeenlyside700 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +comeontutan Nope! The recording of the botched attempts uses the audio from my phone's camera. For the complete take, I added in the audio from a Zoom H4n recording device.
      However, if you listen at 1:37, you'll hear that for a few seconds I *do* use a very special effect with the left foot pedal! It's actually a true "una corda" pedal that makes all the hammers hit only one string instead of two.

    • @comeontutan
      @comeontutan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I see. I listened to the "una corda", nice effect.Thank you!
