    I was diagnosed with HBP in 2003, only after I had a stroke. My BP was 210/198. I had a horrible headache for 8 days straight. I had to work to support my family. So when the pharmacist said I had to go to a doctor or the ER. I went to the doctor next door. He said I needed to take a pill + HCTZ daily for the rest of my life. I was put first on Losartan. After about 5 years I was switched to Lisinopril with HCTZ for about 5 years due to the issue this doctor mentioned. But, I've been back on Losartan with HCTZ for the last few years. I test my BP daily before taking my pills. Today my reading on my wrist cuff was 145/80. Yesterday it was 128/78.
    Listen to your doctor. Take the medicine, it beats having a life threatening stroke. My stroke was bad in so many ways, yet in the long-run it saved my life. It will be 20 years in August. I have gotten to see all 3 children graduate high school. 2 college graduations. Now there are 7 grandchildren. All of which I would have missed if the pharmacist hadn't insisted I go immediately to the doctor.

    I have anxiety driven BP. AT the dentist or doctor, it can reach as high as 240/140. Soon as I get home and relax, 145/90. Sometimes it's 120/80. If I've been keeping up with my cardio, my BP will run 112/65. It's been like this for decades. Decided to go on losartan to keep my BP from spiking that high. Been on 50mg for a month, went to dentist, 245/132. Got back in truck after appointment, 130/85. Now I'm at 100mg. We'll see how that works. And I'm keeping an eye on my BP to make sure it doesn't drop too much.

    Thank you for posting this. I've been on Losartan for 4-5 years now, and while the doctor who prescribed it first was very good about explaining things, she didn't have time to explain exactly how this medication works. While I'm not a medical professional my self, most of my family members are, so I grew up hearing medical terminology on a regular basis, and the mechanics of how medicines work is of interest to me. But the most valuable part of your presentation, for me at least, is the info about drug interactions.

    Losarten k+ gave me profound fatigue, very rapid heart rate, sweating. And my BP was never consistently good or bad. Have switched to Monopril for Afib but the great thing that happened is the profound fatigue almost entirely has gone.....after 10 years of telling anyone who could hear me, doctors included, that I felt I was dying every day. High blood pressure is the silent killer, because their are no symptoms, they say. However, concerning Losartan, there are quite possibly silent (no symptoms) unwanted side effects. I mean, come on! Who knows what kind of things are going on if you take this medication (or any medication). The human body is an extremely complicated machine. Just because there are no obvious side effects that you can see, doesn't mean that you aren't screwing up some aspect of the whole system that your body is composed of. For example, what if taking Losartan for years and years and years causes the mechanism that normally keeps you blood pressure from going too high to atrophy to such a point that it is no longer available?? Then you would have no bad side effects, but it would possibly prevent you from ever being able to stop taking this drug or some other high blood pressure medication without being in big trouble, even if later on you discovered some non-medical way of treating the condition. But of course, drug manufacturers WANT us to become dependent on their drugs don't they. So they are highly unlikely to check for something like this taking place.

The increase can be as much as 30-50 pts; i.e., 120/77--150/ 100 if not higher. My personal rite-aid blood pressure machine is just as frightening as it fluctuates as well. I am sooo tired of the fluctuations and what i define as madness; BP 150/130 Rx meds, before leaving the Dr., BP slowing decreasing; by the time i get home-some what normal; take the meds. BP reading 88/66 blah blah blah ... I will lose the extra weight as this will stop the skew madness. Truly sick of it !!

About 30 reps should calm you sufficiently to have a decent visit with your family practitioner. Covid hit and I had not gone to the doctor until social distancing was over. I found out my bp was out the roof !!!!! It took 6 months to regulate and find meds……my dr asked me what if been doing different . I told her I got the Johnson and Johnson Covid shot and the 2 boosters……. Now I have been prescribed valsartan 320 mg , water pills 25mg , and another bp pill for 50 mg…..

    It gave me chest tightness and shortness of breath and when used with Diltiazem it gave me sharp stabbing chest pains on my right side whenever i laid down as if i was being poked with a needle. As i stated before the anti-hypertensive effect also seems very short at the starting doses. There are much better alternatives out there than this to control high BP.

    I have been noticing these past few weeks that when I stand up, I feel very dizzy and need to stand still for a moment. I have been on losertan 50 mg since November as my doc diagnosed me with a bp of 180/100. I have lost 40 lbs, exercise 4 to 5 times a week (jogging/walking) and have substituted rice, corn, and processed sugars with nuts, fruits and vegetables. My morning bp is now at 117/72. Besides a lower bp, what would cause the dizziness when I stand up? It does not happen every day but maybe once a week or so. I will give this feedback to my doc because I do have a 3 month follow up in a few weeks!

      It sounds like all the hard work you are doing with diet and lifestyle changes are starting to pay off!! That's usually the first sign showing that we may be over doing it with the medication. Your blood pressure looks great. Definitely visit with your doctor about your progress and oftentimes they may consider dropping the dose of the medication. Keep up the good work!

    I have been taking Losartan for 10 years now. Watch out for reddening of hands, face and throat (rash) in combination with heat and alcohol. The blood vessels will expand too much causing this effect -especially in the thin mucous membranes. In the long term this would cause chronic inflammation in the throat and ears. Its all about the blood vessel expansion. On the other hand Losartan is good for a good sleep which is gift from God.

    For me, Losartan K (50 mg) gave me fatigue, muscle/joint aches, stomach ache and excessive phlegm. Worst of all it made BP higher by 10-20 points on both upper and lower readings. I quit taking it and readings are back to mid 130's over mid 70's. BP is always higher in the Dr's office. At home it's always good. Not all meds work for everyone. However, I know folks that this Rx works well on them. Bottom line is, you know your body better than the Dr does. If you notice side effects a month or 2 after starting a med and your Dr wont switch it - find another Dr!

    I think you need to talk about high blood pressure as a symptom, not a disease. So most of it can be taken care of it with weight loss plus exercise, plus a plant based diet (at least mostly) Increasing magnesium with a 200mg magnesium supplement will also help--good research to back up ALL those together. AND, each patient should be taught how to take their blood pressure, and keep a record for at least a month, then go to once a week. I was able to get off HP drugs by being at a good wt, eating plant based diet, and adding the magnesium. I walk, bike or kayak for 1 hour or more per day. I used to swim before Covid! Swam a mile in 40 min.

    • @robertusga
      @robertusga ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don't need to go 100% plant based. You can eat a Mediterranean style diet which emphasizes plants, but adds fatty fish and some lean meats. Much easier to get your protein needs covered this way. It's possible to get enough protein on plants only, but the outcome based data shows better blood pressure on Mediterranean vs 100% plants. The main driver of lower bp is reduced sodium and reduced weight. You can do that with or without meat. Unless you want to be ethical vegan ofcourse, then 100% plants is fine.
