To be honest, it was more than just revenge. Revenge was one of the factors driving his motivation but not the only thing. He genuinely wanted to get rid of evil and corrupt officials for a better empire. He cared about the sufferings of the people, and saw that his father was allowing corrupt officials to get away with their wrong doings, while oppressing the people. So while initially Li Chengyin was not trying to become the Crown Prince, after the assassination of his eldest brother, the former Crown Prince, who was a good person, he saw and understood that he will have to either become the Crown Prince or be killed. He had to scheme in order to seem like he wasn't a threat so as not to alert those trying to use him or eliminate him. Unfortunately, the emperor welcomed this kind of competition between his children as he saw it was the only way to prove they can ascend the throne. To Xiao Feng, he had to act like he didn't care about her by being harsh to her so that others don't try to use her to get to him by harming her or threatening him with her. Unfortunately, Xiao Feng didn't understand this and when she regained her memories she was too consumed by vengeance and wasn't willing to forgive Li Chengyin until the very end. It was clear they sincerely loved each, but there just seemed to be so much in between them that they were unable to overcome mainly due to Xiao Feng's unwillingness and Li Chengyin's inability to properly express his feelings for her and why he was doing certain things. That's also probably due to the fact that Xiao Feng tends to act without thinking so if he had let her know beforehand that he is going to be mean to her in public so people will think he hates her she would have given the game away like she did with the issue regarding the copper coins.

Please watch!! Trust me its probably one of my favorite Chinese dramas of all time now. It's a great drama I just literally finished the whole show and now going go start the Directors Cut version. Their chemistry was amazing that's why I couldn't stop watching! Has so many emotions and their love was true thats why it made the show so much more heartbreaking. Have a good day and I hope you do give this drama a shot trust me you won't regret it! 😊
