  • TYPO: Low mode output is actually 150 lumens (not the 115 I mistakenly wrote in the video)!
    Today we're taking a look at the amazing PD36R from Fenix.
    Thank you to all the awesome people over at Fenix for providing a review sample!

    Outstanding review. I love the effort you went to for "just" a flashlight review. I'm not tactical or anything like that, but as an avid outdoorsman I'd like a light that has great throw for when I need it. I do agree the moonlight mode is a little bright but I'll make do. It doesn't have to be perfect for me; good enough is just that.

    I bought one of the Cerakoted ones. Fenix has a handful of models they sent to BlownDeadline for Cerakote. The battery life is pretty amazing that and the Cerakote and 20% off sale they had going for Memorial Day is what basically made up my mind on the light. Was $119 after the 20% off that Cerakote adds $50 or so to the price but it looks so cool lol.

    Great video, congratulations.
    I gave away two of these lights last year and those who use them are very happy.
    I have been using Fenix since 2012 and it does great lighting but I would like it to also do versions with a neutral tint.
    When I gave the two lights as a gift, I didn't buy it for myself because I only use neutral lights (but before giving the torches as a gift I tried them and I was very impressed)
    After a long time I bought the PD36R yesterday thanks to a big discount.
    I haven't received it yet but having tried it some time ago my opinion is that it could be one of the best lights ever put on the market.
    Only criticism: I would like a sixth level of 1 lumens and a neutral tint

    The PD36R is a great light. I own one and have to agree about needing a lower setting for eco though I would say 5 lumens rather than 15; as focused as the beam is 15 lumens would still be too bright in some situations. I have a 2014 model Fenix LD22 with a similar beam pattern with a 3 lumen low setting which won’t blind you working on something close up and still gives plenty of light. For someone who depends on a long lasting light it is a great option.

    • @ChinookOutdoors
      @ChinookOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appreciate it! Unfortunately, it seems common across most of their lights. I just got an E35 in and it suffers from the same problem (and it's nowhere close to being a "tactical" light).

    The point for the two side clip is so you can clip it to a hat to make it a head lamp and clip it down many ways but if you want the one sided one get the pd35 and just switch the clips but as well it doesn’t have a charging cover so you feel better with it in the water

    How efficient is the SST-40? I mean its light output... It's better than CREE?
    Is it good enough not to degrade in the short term? Do you know how many hours of useful life it has?

    • @ChinookOutdoors
      @ChinookOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great question that I, unfortunately, don't have the technical knowledge to answer. I have yet to experience any issues with this light in the few years I've owned and used this light, and I haven't heard of anyone else having problems with this LED. While I couldn't come across a specific lifespan for this LED, I haven't come across any commonly-used LEDs that don't have several tens of thousands of hours of run time. The average user will probably never run against this limit before a newer, fancier light catches their eye.

    There’s a TH-cam reviewer cannot remember his name, but he used the 36 for about 2 years until he bought and tried out the new PD35 V3. And actually that 1 is 18650 powered.

    • @ChinookOutdoors
      @ChinookOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, that's a tough choice! Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with any lights from the PD35 series. from looking on the website, the biggest difference is the battery size (18500 vs a 21700 battery in the PD36) and built-in USB charging (again only in the 36). The 36 will be able to sustain more lumens for longer at the sacrifice of an overall increase in bulk (you can google "18650 vs 21700" to get a sense of the comparison). Having built-in USB charging however, does make not having to have a dedicated charger at hand a thing of the past.

    Hi: Nice review from someone that obviously depends on a great flashlight. question.. Have you compared this against the PD40R? I'm trying to decide between the two for home use - project and the like. I like that the PD36R can be used in tail stand mode (think working under a sink!), but I've never been fond of that copper switch and sort of like the rotary switch on the 40R. However, I think the tail stand feature is more valuable. Thanks for any input on that any other pros/cons between the two.

    Hi ! Thanks for your review, rather instructive! Do you happen to know how long it will work on the 'beast' mode - 1600 lumens? I know that the Olight Warrior X Pro lasts about 2 mins on the brightest mode, then it changes to a lighter mode to protect it. Is there a similar cooling system at this one, or would it work for longer and still be protected ?

    • @aquasound-escapes898
      @aquasound-escapes898 ปีที่แล้ว

      From another person who physically tested the turbo on the pd36r. Turbo will run 1,600 lumens at 5min then drop to 1,400 lumens another 20 minutes then down to 800 lumens the remainder of the battery at 4 hours.
      This usage of turbo is way better than acebeam, Olight, nitecore. Compare any turbo or usage of battery. The 36 is SO efficient

    • @ChinookOutdoors
      @ChinookOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Unfortunately, I haven't done any formal tests, but I've run turbo (and the subsequent stepped-down high mode) for 5-10 minutes. It certainly gets warm, but unlike some other lights like an Astrolux S43 it never gets truly unbearably hot. I think overall Fenix errs a little more cautious, and opt for a more reserved output instead of trying to get big numbers for a spec sheet. None the less, that might be a good test to incorporate into future reviews!

      @@ChinookOutdoors In your opinion. Does the bezel is good enough for smashing for self defence scenario?

    • @ChinookOutdoors
      @ChinookOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@f50koenigg I'm not the best person to speak about self-defense related matters as I don't have much experience in that field. The bezel doesn't really look like it's intentionally designed to cause any extra trauma. There are definitely many other lights out there that have bezels that look like they'd do a little more damage (it's definitely no 4sevens PK Paladin). That being said, the edge does taper down quite a bit, and I wouldn't want to take a solid impact form this thing... Whether it's a solid metal-bodied pen, a light like the PD36R, or a purpose-built impact weapon I think the most crucial aspect is not soo much the design of the object, but rather the training that goes into its use.
