Monster trucks are the best act that Supercross could hope for! Love seeing the footage of the other trucks as well. Some of this was featured in the first Bigfoot in Action VHS!

How do you tell the difference between 3 and 4 with the bullnose front clip?

3 had a factory Ford frame and never had planetaries with the bullnose clip. #4 always had planetaries, even with the bullnose front clip and it had a straight rail frame.

It's not that they didn't think of it, it's that Monster Trucks had to evolve like anything else. When they first hit the scene publicly in the early 1980's it was just Bigfoot and a couple of others rolling on top of cars slowly, that evolved into doing things like wheel stands and not long after they started doing obstacle courses and eventually full on side by side racing, and it wasn't really until they started doing the obstacle courses and racing that they started recognizing the need to refine the suspensions, it was out of necessity as the sport evolved.
Bob Chandler himself has stated that in the early days he never expected Monster Trucks to turn into the cultural phenomenon that they did and expected them to be little more than a passing fad that would burn out after a few years. What you're seeing in this footage from 1986 was the very early days of Monster Trucks being used in a more aggressive manner, in fact Bigfoot #4 in this video was the first true stage 2 monster truck that was really built specifically for more aggressive driving. It wasn't until Bigfoot #8 in 1989 though with it's long travel suspension did they really start to turn into what they are today.
