From my limited understanding of how avatar IK works, this sounds like a reasonable feature request. I think it should work with the arms as is. They already do pose esitmation ok with VR controllers. The only difference is it is a predetermined spot the hands move to. And as far as non-humanoid avatars go, they could have the option to have client-side only ghost robot hands so represent where your "hands" are.
Oh I can imagine that, the ghost robot hands thing. I've run into a lot of avatars that wouldn't normally have hands that have hand toggles to see where your hands are. That's a really good idea.
