  • Cambodia just had a major election, but there wasn't much suspense involved. The outcome of the Cambodia election 2018, as expected, was declared a win for authoritarian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has been in power for over 33 years.

    » Watch the Previous Episode: go.nowth.is/2LOewM2
    This was the 6th general Cambodia election since the UN sponsored the country's free and fair vote in 1993, but some analysts say that the more elections that have been held, the more authoritarian the Hun Sen has become.
    Journalists and human rights groups say Cambodia is sliding into a full-fledged dictatorship. And we spoke to an expert on authoritarian regimes and democratization in Southeast Asia who says the country is already there.
    In this episode of NowThis World, Versha, will be exploring Cambodia news and the question: how did Cambodia and the Cambodia people get here?
    But before we look at the latest Cambodia election, we will need to understand who Hun Sen is.
    So we first explore the world's longest currently-serving Prime Minister, Hun Sen, who first came to power in 1985, but was a political figure in the country years before that. A series of twists and turns in the Cambodian power structure eventually landed him in the right place at the right time.
    In the past year, the Cambodian election crackdown and the crackdown on human rights has escalated. In addition to eliminating the major opposition party, major independent newspapers have been forced to close, in order to silence critical reporting.
    So, now that the Cambodian People's Party has taken another victory, what's next for Hun Sen and the country?
    Hun Sen has committed to staying Prime Minister for at least another decade, and reportedly he's also been grooming his sons to take over when the time comes.
    But as the younger, more educated generation grows increasingly disillusioned with Hun Sen's authoritarian rule, could a mass protest reasonably overthrow the government?

      The PM mr Hun Sen is doing his best balancing the needs of the citizens and staying in power. By staying in power means paying off his cronies. A leader only has enough treasure to please one side more than the other. That is the rule of power. Hes done alot but it seems that the moment he losens grip on his power, those below him will snatch it like a dog snatches bone. The opposition party CNRP mainly consists of highly educated individuals. Saoroeun, Mou Sochur, Sam Rainsy and perhaps 100more and 50 whose held seats in the national assembly before dissolution of CNRP. They werent given any major say and their powers are almost non existent. The current government is full of greedy corrupt individuals with 0 educational background and only seeks short term profits. They will die knowing they cant bring their rolls royce and landcruiser with them. They will die knowing they caused human suffering to a large scale (which the cambodian people know nothing about due to government controlled media). We, the younger generation, will pay for the damage they caused and pay back the debts they took from China.

    Hunsen and his extended family control every major industry in Cambodia. They control electricity, water, telecommunications, production of food etc. they basically hold all industries in private hands. The most important is the control of the army. It is not loyal to the people but to Hun Sen. and his crony generals who rule through intimidation and fear. He basically has his own personal bodyguard unit who receive the most advanced weaponry at his own dispense. It is a mafia state, and his son is being groomed for a take over in the future. He is using the threat of civil war to justify his corruption of staying in power and he is right coz the only way to get rid of an insect like Hun Sen is through arms coz he will have it no other way, he will cling to power through his son and future generations by rule of the gun....

    Ehhem! Vietnamese here. Hi, everyone. I've been watching this major election in Cambodia(Cam Bốt in Vietnamese) for couple months. Hun Sen, once submitted to Hanoi authority, now changed his mind to the more prosperous, powerful China. China has for decades been trying to win back their affluence in Cambodia, also that they were the one who backed the brutal communist Khmer Rouge leading to the most severe genocide in southeast Asian ever since. By then, Vietnam communists were in an intense conflict with their Chinese 'comrades'. After, a bloody invasion by Khmer troops into southern Vietnam territory, Hanoi authority quickly retaliated by sending troops over border to overthrow Khmer Rouge. That was the first war the recently united Vietnam involved since 1975, you all know what had happened before 1975. So it's called the '3rd Indochinese war'. The 20 years followed was a nightmare for all Khmer and Vietnamese people. As mentioned before, Vietnam authority chose Hun Sen, who had been a Khmer Rouge officer, to represent their power in Cambodia and settled down with the UN and other countries retreated their troops back home, 1991 Paris Peace Talk.
    At first, Hun Sen appeared to submit to Hanoi. Actually, just since 2016, when the former Vietnamese Prime Minister(PM) resigned, Hun Sen began to overtly oppressed the opposition CNRP and shut down independent national press. Since the collapse of the Khmer Rouge, China hasn't given up their ambition to retake their control over Cambodia. As part of the President Xi's Belt & Road Initiative, Beijing has been investing billions of $ on Cambodia's infrastructure, China even hires a deep-sea harbor, south of Cambodia, for 99 years. Hun Sen gov now get much more benefit from China so Hun Sen is no more afraid of Vietnam's indignation. Right in the first place, China's manipulation plays a major role in the messed-up Indochina for their own purpose.

      Ehem, Cambodian here. I totally agree with you. I've read lots of books about Cambodian civil wars. Many people like to play the blaming game. My people are not familiar with researches. They just believe whatever they want to believe. The outcome is hatred towards Vietnamese people and even towards Cambodian people who don't share their views. In-fighting is our weak trait.

      I disagree with you that Vienam chose Hun Sen.
      Vietnam want someone from the opposite party of Khmer rouge, someone fight along side Vietnamese. But back in our home China was attacking Vietnam and we too afraid that the UN would punish Vietnam for interfere the Cambodia election (which UN do it anyway for invading Cambodia).
      When Cambodian chose Hun Sen. Vietnamese soldier was like. "WTF you people? Okey this guy seem nice, anyway we dare him try to stabbed our back. Okey our wife and kid are in great danger at home, time to say goodbye."

    • @phandinhthanh2295
      @phandinhthanh2295 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't know that Hun Sen fled to Vietnam to escape purges inside Khmer Rouge Regime, and Vietnam's army brought him back to Cambodia?

    • @random-guy
      @random-guy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pol Pot was extremely paranoid. He ordered purges within his armies. The last purge was carried out to the Eastern Zone. Sor Phim, the leader of the Eastern Zone, was taken out to be executed. Chea Sim, a military commander of the Eastern Zone, and Him Sen, a low-ranking militant, and the remnants, fled to Vietnam. By then, there was already a Cambodian Libration Front in Vietnam organized by Vietnam. The new comers joined the Front. After the liberation, 2 senior members in the Front ruled Cambodia, but they didn't submit to Vietnam, so they got removed and replaced with Hun Sen ever since. I don't know about Vietnam, but freedom of speech in Cambodia is non-existent. If you dare to criticize the government even on Facebook, you'll go to prison. Just curious, are there any land grabbing issues in Vietnam? It happens a lot here, but nothing powerless people can do. I don't mind having the same person as the head of state for ever as long as he makes sure the people have a good living standard.

      Especially when the Cambodian King had to flee to Vietnam to ask Vietnam for help on removing the Khmer Rouge.
      All this "Vietnam invaded Cambodia" was fabricated by the Americans since they still felt salty about losing the Vietnam War. They wanted support from the people to wage another war, and saying that Vietnam invaded their neighbour was the best thing they could do. Especially since most people don't even know about the Khmer Killing Fields.

    People are fear to speak out their mind of politic as well as afraid of dying and imprisoning. Cambodian people don't have freedom even in the name of democracy country but we are have no freedom to do what we actually want to do, as the video said about "the real competitor of CPP which name is CNRP", those who love CNRP they cant even talk about it anymore and the party is now eliminated. So is that the right things for government to do in democracy country ? For me i think it is absolutely not, so what about you all?

China doesnt care about khmer people even one bit. They care about money and we cannot repay them so they will take land. They don't just build road and buildings for us for free. They are not Japan.

      @MasayaShida 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Smart guy what would Japan want from Khmer? We dont have antthing to give. If you talk about cheap labor, khmer go to korea to become laborers not to Japan. Japan has strict immigration policies. I am half Japanese and have been to the Japanese Embassy in Cambodia to issue a passport and I have seen people applying for Visa with the embassy stuff asking them strictly their purpose to go to Japan. Japan does not want labor from Cambodia. Japan does not want natural resource from Cambodia, look at the charts, we mostly export to China and Vietnam if we talking about lumber. Japan does this because they want to help us and the citizen would vote for a candidate that help poor countries.

  • @wolfferoni
    @wolfferoni 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No, I don't think a mass protest would do anything, if not make people more scared when it comes to the consequences of not siding with the govt. We've seen what the Khmer Rouge did. The same thing could happen again and it's much worse when they have China backing them. Everyone is too scared to speak out. There have been protests, especially when it came to the govt taking the land of rural people. The govt has leased 20% of its coast to China for 99 years and China has armed Cambodia. They need more land so they're taking it from the villagers. If the owners of the land refuse, they're imprisoned, regardless of age. If anyone criticises the govt (even online), they risk being jailed, exiled, or killed (see: Kem Ley). There are no news outlets that aren't controlled by the govt. Censorship at its most.
    Cambodia won't change internally, they need international pressure. Australia for example, shouldn't allow Hun Sen and his family to enter the country. He visited within the last year, saying on TV that if people burned his ballot papers, he has every right to go to each of their houses and beat the people. He threatened Cambodia exchange students, reminding them that they had family and friends at home. The international community needs to do more before its too late, Australia specifically.

    i don't know who to believe, the west? or my parents who actually been through the actual relentless war and genocide? what happened in 1993 was true, it's exactly what i learned in school. but the 1997 coup was done by the khmer rouge who have retreated to suburb and densely forest, they was trying to overthrown the government and hoping to retained their power back. from 1979 -1997 cambodia wasn't safe actually, national road and some remote area were under khmer rouge control. people were robbed and killed at that time. my dad's relatives were killed at a waterfall in sihanouk ville. 1997 is where it's actually end.

    I genuinely think hun sen will cling to power at all costs because he is looking to rule with an iron fist. He also wants to create a family dynasty for more to come. For this reason, he grooms his son. If the United States does not want to do something about it, this dictator will have the power to do whatever he wants without impunity. However, people will end up in jail and die under this dictator for more to come if the united states do not do something to weaken his power. If he has support from Japan, Korea, and China, hun sen will remain strong due to these supports. Hun sen cannot continue to exist. People are tired and are trying to recuperate from the civil war and now trying to resettle their lives into society. People demand new change with new leadership. The change will bring happiness and prosperity to people.

    • @jiaxqisun5384

    The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Cambodia expanded 6.90 percent in 2017 from the previous year. GDP Annual Growth Rate in Cambodia averaged 7.59 percent from 1994 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 13.30 percent in 2005.
    Life expectancy of Cambodians in 1990 was 55.4yrs and 2000 it's 58.35yrs, lastly 2015 68.66yrs, literacy rate rises from 1998's 67.3% to 2015's 78.3.

      Corruption is corruption. These numbers look good on the surface and if you're rich or connected somehow to those in power or high positions, you will benefit just as long as you remain loyal to Hun Sen. There is no free speech or freedom for that matter, and if you're poor or in the minority middle class, these numbers don't mean squat. He rules with fear and nothing more.

    • @arbs3ry
      @arbs3ry 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure corruption is bad,no doubt about that.
      But the thing is : can you make sure when you replace Hun Sen with someone/ some other parties else you can get an annual 7% growth rate etc? If history had teach us some lessons then that lesson is things could get worse instead of getting better.If the country has a annual 7% growth you don't interrupt it .
      Take a look at some African countries, corrupted and with a stagnant economy, freedom of speech, so what?Can freedom of speech provide food?
      You live in a walking dead world, hunger and poverty here and there, and you say at least you have freedom of speech.
      Nope, give me that bread I am just a mammal you rant your freedom I feed my family.
      Do you think South Koreans hate Park Chung-hee the dictator who made South Korea from one of the poorest countries in the world to a economic miracle?And what‘s more why the west didn't criticize Park‘s regime but even helped him suppressing freedom of speech? Ok , I get it , because he's side with the US just like Saudi.
      (If the rise of average Life expectancy and literacy rate were only from the result of those in power or high positions, what more can I say

    They said wrongly accused Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1979, without Vietnamese intervention, the killing field could have not ended. Whether they call "invade" or not it was a good invasion because, without this intervention, the death of Cambodia was not 2 million, it could be 5 million or more. I was in Vietnam this time, and I knew the story. As the communists defeat America and South Vietnam, no country has been witnessing this killing field and by politics, no one would have intervened in the communist regime, when they won the war. Without the Communists of the North Army to help Cambodia, the killing field even lasts longer, but surprisingly, no one is willing to give credit to the North Vietnamese communists, whom they called "Invade" instead. I think the Cambodian people should have grateful gratitude to the North Vietnam Ammy for removing their brutal pol pot Khmer Rouge by the time not too late. I do not like the communist regimes, but if they are not brutal, then it does not matter, we still have to accept who they are. It depends on the leader, any party, any regime, you need a good merciful leader.

    That these despots are always able to rationalise sufficiently to assuage any conscious qualm borne of how horrible they really are, can in fact serve as a lesson to each of us. How ugly and merciless how faculties at cognitive reappraisal can be.

    Not every Cambodian hate him, guys. I'm Cambodian and i believe in our current prime minister. And why is everyone saying he's pol pot? We might not have the best thing in the world but we got enough to live. Idk what all of you expect from a country that used to have nothing (literally nth) 40 years ago. Everything takes time and he's working on it. 👌 *peace*

    Yeah... if you think that mass protest would work? People get shot and assaulted every time a protest happens. I'm still hopeful something good happens to us, but right now, I'm horribly 50-50 about the whole political situation we have right now. Frankly, a lot of people aren't positive about it...
