  • I've read many times on forums (gpz900r.org) about the problems people have removing the rocker cover from these engines, I hope this helps. Thanks to alanjw for some tech help on the first video.

You don't have to remove the fairing to take the cam cover off, remove the 2x 8mm head bolts that hold the thermostat housing and gently lever it back about 12mm.

I don't remember having to strip off the front fairing frame to remove the cam cover.
These are known for valve shrinkage, so check clearance regular.
Don't use excessive sealant, on mine it bunged up the oil strainer leading to main crank bearing failure.
It's a pity Kaw didn't make it easier to clean the strainer. A simple cover on sump would have done the trick.
Also remember the are two oil drain bolts.

Cylinders 1 & 4 , both ? First thing I would check was the COIL for those two .

I just did mine yesterday...painful the amount of fairing and frame to remove to get the cam cover off. Incidentally I had a miss fire on 2&3 turned out to be the CDI box. When you say the problem was 1&4 I immediately thought the left coil, CDI or pick up coil would be the issue.

Mine was just blocked jets. It took me a while to clean the tank out but eventually I got it sorted.

Miss fire I would change the ignition leads. My leads
showed continuity off the bike but when bent they showed a break. Also when parked on side stand rain water collects and shorts out plug caps.

Thank you for your great advice. In this instance it was dirt in the tank blocking the pilot jets.

Impressive skills and confidence, presume you've had training? I let my very tidy A4 GPZ900r go because I felt unable to do what you've successfully accomplished.

How long does it take to check the valve clearances. I have a 1984 A1 which needs checking but don't have your skills! I am going to book into a local bike mechanic but he admits he hasn't worked on a 900r for around 25 years.
