    Everything Carragher's said here is spot on, players that generally rely on their physical attributes tend to decline quicker/or become a lot more injury prone, ie players like Bale, Robben etc. Messi's been able to adapt better by now focusing more on his technical ability to influence games, that's why he's still playing at a high level.

    Predicted this ending to the debate 5-10 years ago. Messi has the humility and decency to play for himself whereas Ronaldo has only ever played for everyone else's admiration...but when he doesn't get it he's the equivalent of a spoilt teenager. Character is as important as ability and Messi is above Ronaldo in both departments, look at Messi playing cam getting more assists than anyone...but Ronaldo plays within the box and expects goals to be served to him, almost looks like he just wants to have more goals than Messi at the end...it's pretty sad really.

    Thing about Messi is that he took every criticism on his chin. From Argentina, from Barcelona and from PSG. He never once went out of his way to start blaming others when he lost matches, cups or when he “wasn’t performing”. Messi did that interview after that Bayern defeat and didn’t even even blame anyone. He did it to clear things up. The truth about Bartho was revealed slowly so Messi was right on that. The second time was when the Barça board put all the blame on the team and Messi being the captain had to teach them to take responsibility. Messi never did anything selfishly. This interview with Piers was very selfish and self centred and was him trying to justify his ego. He shouldn’t even have to justify anything. Being 37 you won’t be the same player you were in your prime. Football had evolved so much and even the attackers have to do more than just attack. Ronaldo has never been a presser or anything. He’s been a pure attacking player for the majority of his prime. People like Benzema had to take a step back for him to score goals. And they way he spoke about his managers and his ex teammates calling them “rats” and not as good looking as him or rich as him was very cringe.

      "took every criticism on his chin"- he retired from international football briefly, his contract is one of the reasons Barca is bankrupt today, his disrespectful show at the WC vs Holland and Van Gaal, him not liking being subbed by Pochettino last season...I love both Messi and Ronaldo but the amount of negative media coverage Ronaldo gets is ridiculous. Goncalo Ramos scores and they choose to show him after and say he is not happy when he went on to celebrate with the team. These athletes are always scrutinised and for a guy like Ronaldo, he has been historically criticised and mostly did the talking on the pitch. But the one time he decides to talk off the pitch, he's vilified to the point where people are now placing Pele and Maradona above him when just last year they were saying he is one of the GOATs along Messi. He was the top scorer last season but fans and media are judging him on his current form (which is valid) but the same fans and media (Rooney, carragher, neville and co) will make excuses for Rashford, Martial, Maguire, Mctominay and co by holding on to their performance under Ole or their performance in the Euros. The media has a narrative and most people are dumb enough to buy into it. He only spoke negatively about Rangnick. For ETH he simply said the empathy was not there and that he does not feel respected and hence does not respect him- let's be honest we all think the same; we won't respect someone who does not reciprocate. Yes his interview was engineered so he can leave the club but he spoke about Messi positively, his child's death, the issue with the Glazers, the lack of development at the club, his retirement, his desire for the WC but that hardly got as much coverage because the media thrives on sensationalism and have their favourites who they protect. Messi and Ronaldo are once in a lifetime players; they both need to be appreciated. You may not like Ronaldo's character but in no way should that be used to judge his footballing ability and everything he's given to the beautiful game.

    … If you talk about the “extent” of the villainization of CR7 though, it is regrettable. Saintification of Messi is a bit exaggerated. Part was because CR7 is too vocal about his thoughts. The pressure on him was immense. I mediate in cross cultural communication challenges and my love runs a social media agency. Even though it’s different, we both look into behavioral science, psychology, group dynamics. In this day and age 2022/23, we have to factor in social media impact. If I take a case e.g. team with challenges. Analyzing variables that impact. CR7 is actually correct when he expresses that he needs support, sort of team protection, because his social media presence is huge. They did that excellently with Messi. You just cannot simply think that away and not be strategic together with CR7 about it also. Now, CR7 is a football player, not behavioral scientist nor specialized in communication. So he has historically not been “careful” or weighed his words. Clearly not CR7’s strongest point, a vulnerability for sure. M10 is portrayed more like a saint. Yet e.g. M10 has more passive aggressive tendencies when unhappy. His negativity is less obvious but he of course is not saint. He tends to be more secretive of his thoughts, mindset, a classic observer. CR7 is has honed his technical talent excellently clearly more explosive in his personality, play and strikes. It is this same passion that is his power. Very different players and people. CR7 is more prone to outbursts if he feels unsafe or not carried by team. As a coach, you have to know your player and especially a star player. If not? The cracks occur very soon because Media pressure on such a star is massive. Ferguson had the status, the weight and vast experience already. Ten Hag is still less experienced and dealing with a CR7 with an incredible following, is extremely unique and requires awareness from any coach. He is the most followed person in the world. The public punishing to show your “weight” over a person who has such a following is extremely stupid actually. Very unstrategic. I don’t think an average Joe like us, can even know what it’s like to be constantly provoked. It’s a pity that CR7 took the bait. Another variable is that CR7 is more than average goodlooking i.e. fairly attractive. (So he is correct in mentioning it, probably because he simply senses it, but it’s not smart to mention it) M10 is lookswise average. He attracts less envy. CR7 had an alcoholic war veteran dad who was often too intoxicated to connect properly with him. They were poor and had no money, hunger. CR7 had a heart surgery at 15 which was lonely, risky and scary. His positive self talk is clearly a manner to comfort himself without anyone there. It’s part of what made him beat the odds, overcome his loneliness and become successful. We know from studies that positive self talk works, but to beat the odds like this? It’s actually literally mindblowing. Boys without a father or alcoholic, often don’t to well and have higher chance to fail in life and become e.g. petty thief/ criminal.
    CR7 is the most generous football player when it comes to charity. He never forgot where he came from. He regularly donates blood. He had thoughts about adopting poor children, yet his focus is not that now. So, do I think M10 is a better human? Not exactly. He is a good guy, but is less ‘generous’ with sharing his thoughts, life, mindset, money and has no interest in donating blood. M10 donates, but is more “careful” and thus less of a giver in another “way”.
    Now, M10 is very talented. Even when a bit chubby, he was good. A CR7 is very talented, he was open about that he had to hone skills through dedication, training, positive mindset. It wasn’t actually “given” to him. So he is more relatable in that respect than a M10. CR7 is less relatable because he shares his rare winner’s mindset out loud, while the other doesn’t. So to villainize CR7 so much? Killing his career in Europe while he still has the dedication to inspire ? Makes me sad. Al Nassr wasn’t his original plan. It was the only “decent” respectable offer and choice left after all the backlash. The money eases some pain.
    With a type like CR7, the envy and misunderstandings make people tend to “test” his strength to the extremes. It’s often subconscious. Yet at the end of the day, it’s just a man. He needs team support to perform, like any other player.
    He could die like any man and his career in Europe could die prematurely too due to the villainization. Nobody is invincible and both need a positive team and team coach, lonely positive self talk is never bullet proof.
    Love them both. I feel they have different powers. CR7 deserved less extreme villainization and more acknowledgement.

    • @josebosua1489

      Ronaldos arrogance is just distasteful for many people who don't like that kind of character. The figure of the humble winner and the arrogant villain is something that has always being present in the long history of humanity, and a story far to common in books, cinema, video games etc. The fact is that most people tend to dislike arrogant personalities (such as Ronaldo) while at the same time seem view in an unrealistically perfect way those that show a more humble character (Messi)
      I myself, and many Messi fans, have realized that people that tend to like Ronaldo, also share to a greater extent a mentality/personality similar to his. They see themselves projected on him, just like those who like Messi, also like him more because of his more nuanced and reserved attitude.
      Messi isn't by any means a Saint, far from it. But when compared to Ronaldo, at least publically, his humillity is always something to admire, specially given that he is literally the best player of the last 30 or 40 years.
      I always disliked Ronaldo for his arrogance and superiority complex. Always knew he was an amazing player, but his character always made me hate him as person.
      He could donate all the money he wants, and that is something that is really great. However, one has to also mention that Ronaldo himself has said that he likes to donate because "God has given him much more of what he gives", which basically reveals some sort of ulterior selfish religious motive at the end. Which greatly relates to Ronaldo's selfishness
      Then, you have the undeniable fact that he shows clear signs of emotional immaturity when he loses or is not considered the best, something that shows that his emotional intelligence hasn't developed enough.
      Part of growing up is realizing that not being the absolute best, is not the same as being the worst. And that you can still be a winner, conquer the world and be the best, while staying humble.
      Humillity and success are not mutually exclusive goals

      @@josebosua1489 i was purely talking about the extreme villainization of CR7. sure, Messi is a good person, it is just that he is made a “saint” in a lot of media as of recent, which is unrealistic. Another misunderstanding is that you think I am “only a CR7 fan”. No I love football and I love Messi. I am a person who likes a more nuanced view on things. In my work as a mediator I have to. I analyse character differences, not who is the better or worse human being. I see here a difference in how each character handles different circumstances differently. For example, I saw a boy who loved Messi and then he and his family was harassed after he could visit Messi. They had to move, had no money and the circumstances were extremely extremely dire. They had no proper place to live, nothing. He called for help and Messi nor his team members reacted. He was only given a signed T-shirt and that’s it. Yet when the harassment came after the attention. It was completely completely ignored. I also saw and read that Ronaldo is very generous in general and when a boy was bullied in front of everybody. He publicly defended and he publicly defends Palistina. His is less risk averse. He has the tendency to react immediately and he has the guts to put people in his place at his own risk. It takes courage and is in fact a bit risky to do so. Ronaldo showed genuine interest kids who are not his to adopt them, yet now he has so many, 1 recent death of his baby boy where he admittedly struggled mentally from contributed to the fact that it is not his current focus. I disagree with the “over” saintification of Messi. I didn’t say who is a “better” or “worse” human. I love Messi, but I have observed self serving moments as well, but they are less conspicuous. I just find it a pity that the villainization in media leads to such a non-layered judgement and a premature end of CR7’s career in Europe. I know about the villainization of Argentina of Messi for example. At that time, I also commented and strongly disagreed. Yet the difference is that it was not “worldwide” villainization and not portraying him as a horrible human being. Another difference is that it was not nearing the end of his career, so he had time to make a comeback and he had no so close tragic losses of family members during the span of career. I feel the villainization overexaggerated. It could have been handled better by both parties, not “just” a CR7. I understand that you like to be “right” about CR7, but it has a of layers to it. He matured over the years and I coach people who seem arrogant. Their positive self talk is often a way of soothing themselves. Some do it silently, others out loud. It doesn’t make the other a better/worse human. It are different approaches, different vulnerabilities and ways to overcome life’s hardships which is inherent to human existence.

      Oh piss off mate. How much more acknowledgement do you need?
      You are the most followed person worldwide and are 2nd only to Messi in most goal scoring records. You are acknowledged by most of the greats as one of the greatest ever. You played for the biggest clubs in England, Spain and Italy. Even after all this, at the end of your career, you are not performing at the level you aspire to and your overall impact on the team is net negative when you start, you still can't give up your ego. He is 38 ffs. Most people around that time are mature enough to realise that not everything goes their way. Yet he stubbornly holds on to the glory days of the past, acting as if what he did a decade ago is enough to warrant him playing week in and week out.
      He was one of childhood heroes for most of the football fans born around the millennium . But it was always clear to everyone with an IQ higher than a brain-dead crab that if he didn't drop his ego at the twilight of his career, this was the way it was gonna go. Sad end but he brought it to himself.

But Ronaldo is that one player who I'd trust with everything in me to win me a football game.. cause I know he'll do he's absolute best to win..Ronaldo is an emotion.. Ronaldo absolutely loves football.. you might see him getting angry and all that . . That's because he wants to be the best .. I understand his frustrations when he comes up short. Because he believes he's can do more . Messi fans hate him for that .. they call it arrogance.. but really it's not like that, he jus expects to win every single game. I love Ronaldo man. Although I'm very biased because I'm from the same island as Ronaldo and I would always pick him before Messi in my starting XI, I do have to reckon that Messi is a better player technically. But, I mean, Ronaldo is my guy, he gave me so many great memories, started supporting Man United largely because of him, even watched Juventus matches because of him, and the way he carried the Portugal national team time after time was simply amazing. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have made it to the 2014 WC, we wouldn't have gotten past the group stage of 2016 EURO, which we ended up winning. Additionally, even though he carried multiple shit teams with Portugal that ended up underperforming massively, he never renounced the Portuguese shirt, like Messi for example. Portugal was very unlucky that we only got this massive amount of talent coming into our squad after Ronaldo's prime, we could have been a devastating team if B. Silva, Felix, B. Fernandes, Cancelo, Dias had come a few years before. Finally, Ronaldo did a massive weightlifting to our tiny island in the Atlantic: Madeira! No one outside of Portugal knew about this place before Ronaldo arrived on the scene. And he never hid it whatsoever, he actually emphasized it. Many times, when celebrating Man United and Real Madrid titles, what flag was he holding? A flag of Madeira, our tiny island. What flag was he holding when we won the EURO? A flag of Madeira. He constantly sponsored Madeira's tourism and shared publications about Madeira. He financed part of an hospital and a school here. Messi is a better player, but Ronaldo will always be my guy!

    The pure football romantics always resonated more with Messi and thus this entire fairytale of Messi's tryst with destiny as far as world cup was concerned, but apart from the Cr7 fan base and a handful of experts who admire him none really thought that football owed a world cup to Cr7. This itself indicates that the majority of football purists always rated Messi higher in this debate.

    The good thing about Jamie is that he’s very neutral and analyzes very well whenever he discusses different football topics. He’s definitely got his Liverpool bias, but he talks with love and knowledge. And when talking about Ronaldo, he’s critical, he’s harsh, but all he’s saying is facts. He’s not excessively harsh or anything, just saying it how it is. He doesn’t dismiss the guy’s whole accomplishments, but he’s definitely being honest.

    • @realfootballtalk6909
      @realfootballtalk6909 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He’s clearly biased against Ronaldo. There’s no such thing as ‘facts’ with how nuanced the discourse on CR7 is and Carragher always chooses to provide the negative perspective (since way before CR7 rejoined Utd). That’s his prerogative and you may share his opinions but he is by no means neutral on this topic. Like most football fans he lets his tribal influences inhibit his ability to show respect to someone who played on a rival team. In the case of Ronaldo and given how great he’s been it’s actually quite pathetic the level to which Carragher pushes his agenda.

    Ronaldo 'was' a great player, but not anymore. He has acheived great things in the game but his time to bow out is coming. His technical ability, dribbling, pace and finishing has all declined. Ronaldo has never been as good as Messi, Messi is the complete footballer. But Ronaldo should be proud of what he has acheived, he has.won multiple Champions Leagues, Domestic Leagues and the Euros with Portugal. And he has scored over 700 goals in his career, top baller but he is 37 years old, and all the greats start to decline when they reach their mid to late 30's.

    • @lucian7338
      @lucian7338 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      This take on Ronaldo carrying Portugal is just plain false. He scored a great hattrick vs Spain in 2018 and a brace vs Hungary at Euro 2016...and that's it. When it mattered most in knockout matches, honestly speaking, they've never really NEEDED him. There 's even an argument to be made that they could be better off without him in many tournaments. Where was he against Spain in 2010, against Uruguay in 2018? 2014 he was nonexistent, downright poor. In 2006 when Portugal's squad was one of its strongest ever he reached a World Cup semi-final. In 2016, at the Euros, Renato Sanches carried Portugal through that campaign and was rightly named young player of the tournament. He was the reason why Portugal won that trophy.
      He's never been the best player at an international tournament despite the fact that in terms of appearances he's almost unrivaled. He may not even be Portugal's greatest ever player, as Eusebio led them to a 3rd place finish at least at a World Cup. Ronaldo in World Cups is an absent player. And he's supposed to be the most clutch of all-time. People will say I hate him, but he was one of the best I've ever seen play for my club. To say he ever "carried" Portugal though is specious and unfounded. He's the face of the team, he is the image of the team because he's the biggest name. But honestly he doesn't deserve to be in the conversation when we consider Pelé, Maradona and Messi. Those are players who were phenomenal when it mattered most. Even Kylian Mbappé has already surpassed Ronaldo's international status. That in itself is unforgivable.

    Ronaldo has been more relevant outside the pitch this past years so if that wasn’t a sign… Messi always talk on the pitch

      Yeah, he has always been a celebrity and a footballer. That is why he is way more popular outside of football, every celebrity adores him, and he is really popular off and on the pitch. Even more popular than actors Leonardo DiCaprio. He has it all. Before he can back it up, one amazing goal and boom people already forgot he just caused a drama a month ago. But this time it was different, if only he scored an amazing goal then people will never talk about his past interviews. But he didn't. His age and performance can no longer back up his swagger.
