I used to be a painter, we always used most of the materials you have, I always had/have purdy brushes, nice to see you wash the building down, I’ve seen lots of people paint over dirty buildings and wonder why it was coming off 6 months later.
Love Charlie's videos - slow and steady, super detailed and well presented. I'd happily watch you on regular TV, Charlie. Like a slightly posher Nick Knowles. Keep it coming!
The finished result looks great Charlie, you can’t see those cracks at all and the house looks very smart. Carrier bags are a good way of keeping the paint off the paint tray, it takes two to cover the tray (one for the tray and one inverted for the roller area), and if you leave the paint to dry on them you can then reverse and turn inside out for the next painting - works surprisingly well. I like the tip with the hosepipe to clean the roller, plus you give your bushes a protective coat of paint during the cleanup as well 😁
Thanks Geoffrey. Great tip that I'll have to try. So everyone's recommending the Dandy Roller and brush cleaner. I have heard about this but never got round to buying. Slightly kicking myself now though!
@@CharlieDIYteHi Charlie, I have used the dandy cleaner.... TOP TIP - get some 100mm pvc pipe and a couple of sealable end stops (one for each length). Cut the pipe into a couple of 500-600mm lengths (just longer than your 18" roller). Fill one with water and leave the other dry. Spin your roller/brush in the water filled length... then spin dry off in the 'dry length' of pipe and this avoids you getting soaked by the spin off! If you only want to do one length for the dry spin off, you can of course just do that. But this method keeps the mess to a minimum! Hope it helps!
Thank you so much. I followed every bit of advice, used every recommended product and it came out amazing. I made one change. I hired a light scaffold system , designed for painting two stories. That way I was able to repair every crack , even small ones. Power washing was simple. So here is my theory. I don't think you can properly roller paint an upstairs with a extension , from the ground. If you think of it , you are 20 feet away from the point of contact. Pressing at the end of the extension, but at the top , where the roller is. You are just barely forcing paint on the wall. But with the scaffold, I was able to force the paint into every nook and cranny, every tiny little hole. Thanks again. Saved me a fortune and I have the best painted house on the street.
I’ve been doing the roller spinning thing for a while but in a deep bucket to catch most of the spray. If you can’t be bothered to keep emptying it turn it into a flower pot and have it above a drain area or soak away but I do it this way so I can pour it into a soak away. Great video, large rollers are great!

Thanks! The walls were tinted to Farrow and Ball Shaded White, windows Hardwick White and gutters Downpipe. That Emperor paint is brilliant though. Can't recommend it highly enough.
If you are going to dabble with an airless for small jobs then consider the Graco Ultra handheld. I personally use a Titan 440 but I do wish I had the hand held Grace because it it would handle 60% of what I do with easier cleanup.
To give a possibly unpopular view, I just sold on my Graco Ultra after having to replace the pump at an eye-watering £200 in just over a year from purchase. At over £600 I’m afraid I just don’t believe them to be fit for purpose (and I’m not the only one whose experienced Sue’s, just google reviews for it) and am now playing with a £30 hvlp sprayer, that although it has to have thinned down paint, is easier to clean and IMHO delivers comparable results to the Graco - oh and in a worst case scenario, it can be replaced for £30 - what’s not to like?!
Great video as always. You mentioned the option of spraying your house, As a decorator myself I personally wouldn't spray outside simply due to the fact that you don't need much wind to carry the over spray potentially onto other houses or cars, I've known this happen before. People do spray outside and I'm sure it's a case of having experience and confidence. I've got a couple of small sprayers one being a q tech p 019 I think but I've honestly not used it in years. I honestly much prefer a brush and roller. Spraying is good but for me it needs to be the right job. Having said that I know other decorators who spray almost ever job.
Thanks Pete - I hadn't thought of the wind. Great point. Yes I think rollering is the better solution, particularly as Emperor recommend you follow up with a roller anyway if you're spraying.
Hi Charlie. Excellent video. I noticed you didn't cover your windowsills or porch roofing. How do you prevent splatter from the roller landing on these surfaces?
I did cover the lower window sill with that plastic sheeting - I should have shown that in the video. The upper sills didn't really need it as I wasn't painting above them, just to their sides. You're right though, it's really important to cover the sills, particularly terracotta sills like mine.
I'm just about to order some emperor paint. The company sent colour cards that are actually cards painted with the paint. I ran it under the ta. Water just bounced off!
Really timely video Charlie. I’m specifying painting of render at a care home I’m tendering for external repairs and redecoration. I’m specifying the render paint atm and hadn’t come across the Emperor paint. It sounds good so I’ll look into that. Also, I have specified spray application but not following on with a roller so I will add that in to my spec. All useful tips. Cheers Charlie. 😊👍🏼
Thanks David. I was being a bit dramatic. Just got my feet a bit wet which wouldn't have happened if I wore wellys. I don't know if it would spin quickly enough if the hose wasn't held so close 🤔
@@davidmcarthur1093 Ah, thanks David. Have you ever tried this? www.directnine.uk/products/purdy-140755200-brush-and-roller-spinner-cleaning-tool-112-and-134 A LOT of people recommended it to me after watching my vid.
Hi Charlie - Like you my home is rendered but mine is a bungalow, so half the job done straightway LOL. Like you I have been using a roller but have you considered a paint sprayer. I am seriously looking at the Wagner Control 150M High Airless Sprayer 230V as you can also use it to treat doors and fences along with all makes of shed. Not saying you should look at that one, paint sprayers in general. Just an idea. Regards Chris
Hi Chris. Yes I think spraying would make a lot of sense and I do actually mention that at the end of the video. Emperor recommend you still follow behind with a roller though which defeats the object of spraying.
Hi Charlie - Apologies, I did watch your video but I missed that bit about using the roller afterwards, like you say defeats the object. Not something Wagner say you have to do. Well come the New Year I propose to get a Wagner Control 150M High Airless Sprayer 230V and the first thing I will use it for is the 20 odd fencing panels I have. Will let you know how I got on if you want? Years ago and I do mean a long time ago I purchased a pack of brush and roller cleaning tubes at some large DIY show in London. Different sizes and they go into your hand drill, after you have got the excess paint off and you simply spin them in water until they are totally clean, you might have to change the water a couple of times. When clean you simply spin until they are dry. They work, I still have them and they are great. My dear old dad was a painter and decorator all his life and he thought they were amazing. Not seen them for sale since. Regards Chris
Very informative video. You mentioned a soakaway you installed near the house walls, could you enlighten me please? I’m getting rain splash on my new render and a soakaway with pebbles on top might be the answer. Kind Regards
It's great stuff, Gerry - you just have to remember to extrude a decent length of it before you get started because I've got two short sections where it hasn't quite mixed properly 👊
Great video! Thanks very much for the content! You have given me the confidence to paint my own house! I was wondering if it is necessary to apply 2 coats of the masonry paint, or will 1 suffice? Thanks again.
Thanks Matt. It's all about coverage. Two would be better as you'll inevitably miss bits on the first coat but I'll share a secret with you - that Emperor paint is so good I actually only got round to doing one coat.
@CharlieDIYte very helpful video thanks as just about to embark on painting my 1940’s tyrolean render. Please could you indicate what length GT Convertible pole you utilised as different lengths available?
I painted my render with paint from a company called Renotex, absolutely fantastic paint to apply and still looking good today after being applied 5yrs ago.
House looks fantastic Charlie! I painted the render on front of my cottage with Sandtex which was ok. I went to the trouble of sheeting and masking windows and door due to splatter risk. Did this product perform well in that respect? Great tips as per normal. Many thanks for your endeavours👍
Thanks James, that's a useful tip. There wasn't a lot of splattering but I did cover the lower sills, and the lower windows are coming out so I wasn't too bothered about them. I should have mentioned that. There's always something.
Aye, Wooster and Purdy seem to be the way forward. No seems to mention watering down the first coat especially when painting a wall that hasn't been painted before.
Just had my property rendered white and then the windows sprayed black and some overspray got through or under the paper, therefore causing me to have to repaint over my 3 week old render! this video has given me some useful tips! I guess these methods would be the same for the silicone based render and the silicone render paint I’ve just purchased from wetherby for £127 🤦🏽♂️
I've would have thought so. Just make sure the paint you've bought is breathable, otherwise you're defeating the object of having the silicone based render.
Recently painted a small Victorian gate house in Little Green masonry paint up here in the northern Scottish Highlands - the weather can be quite extreme here, so I'm monitoring how it performs. It was a pretty expensive option. If it's any good, I will be painting the main house, which is a lot larger at approx 5500sq.ft. of floor area. But I'm interested in buying an airless spray kit due to the size of the building.
@@CharlieDIYte also used Little Green, went on well but may be causing the paint underneath to lift (taking the outer layer of LG off too), but it may just be something I did (or didn't) do.
Hi Charlie great job and how’s the render repairs and emperor paint holding up? I have a bit of a nightmare detached bungalow down in Cornwall with Badly painted rendered walls. Looking at repairing next year and using their new base coat rough texture to cover it all after scrapping back all loose paint etc. then 2x top coats of the emperor masonry paint. Good tips on washing down as well. Keep up the good work 👍
Great video! We have a lot of house to paint so wondered how many of the 10L paint tubs you used. Just to gauge an idea of how much it might cost us. Thanks!
Ok, cleaning the roller Charlie, lets keep you dry lol! Get a couple plasterers deep tubs, this enables cleaning various length rollers, a length of 6mm(M6) threaded rod (1000mm) Screwfix do packs of 5 for around £10. Most rollers use a 6mm hole to enable connection to the roller frame. The rod can be cut to a more reasonable length to fit standard 12inch rollers so lets say 35-40cm and all you need now is either 4 x M6 nuts or 2xM6 through hole knobs, these make the clamp to enable the roller to be spun and a drill of course. I also have a couple of M10 nuts epoxied together at the bottom of the tub that the M6 rod can fit into to give more stability, I have two because I added some epoxy into the bottom nut to prevent drilling through the plastic bottom. You can have two tubs one to centrifugally remove the paint, the second to spin the roller in water. I feel a fill in Charlie video on "Roller Cleaning Best Method" coming on lol!
Thanks buddy. I've often thought about doing something like this - ingenious! Can you get the hose in to spin it effectively enough or is the angle you point it at too much?
Hi Charlie we painted a large rendered wall similar to yours, (25 year old render though!) which was previously painted white, no sign of moss of fungi or any of that, we painted it with sandtex masonry paint with microseal technology, and it's turned yellowish within 2 days.. we went back and painted it again with DULUX WEATHERSHIELD exterior masonry paint, it did the same thing almost immediately. so we coated the wall in SBR bond which formed a nice thick shiny layer over the old stuff, painted again with another brand and it's gone YELLOW as a banana, any help?
The one issue you may not have considered is Algae! Just because the moss or funghi is not visible, it doesn't mean it isn't there. I had it recommended to me to clean with an anti-algae spray (you can dilute liquid chlorine for the same effect but PLEASE - Use a Respirator!!!) then wash down with the jet wash after. ALSO - You may need to prime in your case? Hope it helps
Have you used any type of algaecide on your walls in the past? Oftentimes products marketed to either kill algae or fungus rot termites etc contain copper. If you are using water based paints it's very possible the copper is leeching to the surface which will turn white paint yellow. it will migrate to the surface no matter what you cover it with. You can have your yellow paint tested for copper, take a bit of jt and smash it up with some distilled water and have that sample tested at your local swimming pool store. If there is copper present you are going to have to either learn to enjoy yellow walls or remove the exterior coatings down to bare render and repaint. You can remove old paint quickly with an angle grinder and cupped wire wheel attachment.
This is yet another great video. Thank you for producing some awesome content! I do have a question if you have the time to answer. I was recommended Sandtex to paint my masonry exterior & I wondered why you didn't go with such a paint? Thank you!
Hi Charlie, really love your videos which are always very educations for us DIYers. You mention in this video using polythene tubing to over the down pipes to protect them from the paint. I haven't come across this before so can you provide more details of this and where to buy, etc? Thanks.
Thanks Adam, I really appreciate that. We buy it from trade suppliers to transport curtains in the old day job., but something like this would do the job bit.ly/30vwE5Z
Hi Charlie, I’ve been to your store for some items but couldn’t find the drainpipe protector, can you please tell me where I can get this and what to ask for. Thank you George (I’ve also ordered the Emperor paint) 🙏🏼
Hi Charlie. I know this video is a year or so old now but what colour is your render in from emperor paints and also what colour are your downpipes. Combination looks amazing! Hope your well? Marc. 👍
Paint the gutters and the down spouts last know need too mask up, sheet your tie roof up. USE a Scrapper on your roller. Been a painting an decorating for 35 years. Get a 3 inch for cutting in.
Thanks Lee. I think I would have struggled doing that. I don't know if you've seen my last video on the gutters but scraping off all the old bitumen and flaking top coat produced a lot of mess and it would have been hard to paint behind the down pipes without getting paint on the wall. Plus the chemical fixing to reattach the down pipe would have needed touching up.
Really like your videos Charlie. Just curious have you noticed any drop in humidity or energy efficiency improvements in your data since you painted the exterior of your house with the hydrophobic paint coating?
I used to be a painter, we always used most of the materials you have, I always had/have purdy brushes, nice to see you wash the building down, I’ve seen lots of people paint over dirty buildings and wonder why it was coming off 6 months later.

Thanks! The walls were tinted to Farrow and Ball Shaded White, windows Hardwick White and gutters Downpipe. That Emperor paint is brilliant though. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Great info! Thankyou!
Interesting, never tried masonry paint. Have always used a general exterior paint for small patches to render.
If you are going to dabble with an airless for small jobs then consider the Graco Ultra handheld. I personally use a Titan 440 but I do wish I had the hand held Grace because it it would handle 60% of what I do with easier cleanup.
Thanks Gregory, that's a top recommendation. I'll keep a note of that 👍
To give a possibly unpopular view, I just sold on my Graco Ultra after having to replace the pump at an eye-watering £200 in just over a year from purchase.
Great video full of top tips well worth a watch
Thanks Dave. It's awesome stuff this paint. Still looks great 👍
Great video as always.
You mentioned the option of spraying your house,
As a decorator myself I personally wouldn't spray outside simply due to the fact that you don't need much wind to carry the over spray potentially onto other houses or cars, I've known this happen before.
Yes I think rollering is the better solution, particularly as Emperor recommend you follow up with a roller anyway if you're spraying.
great video the emperor paint is a fantastic product and very eay to apply, thanks for the tip on the padle a great idea
Thanks buddy. It's fantastic isn't it. Still looks as good as the day I applied it. 👊
Great video, I'm taking your advice on the Emperor paint, it has gone up to £120/10litre now though...
Spot on Charlie
Thanks Ben 👍
Weathertex masonry is fantastic stuff the coverage is amazing
Thanks for that 👍
Thank you Charlie. Helped a lot.
Another excellent video. good on charlie. nice house.
@@CharlieDIYte Cheers Charlie. I learn a lot from your videos.
Great video but missing any reference to PVA - necessity or not, and ratio if needed. Also, temperature - air temp v surface temp for application.
Thanks Paul. I think this is a win win because of the breathability (should that be necessary) and water repellency. 👍
Dod you ise it Paul?
@@Lloyd1885 I specified it but the project didn’t go ahead in the end due to budget constraints.
great 3 part video. How many coats did you need? was the 1 x 10L enough?
Moisture has got behind some of my paint and it’s peeled right off around one of the external chimney breasts. How do I avoid that in future ?
A tip on cleaning the roller with the hose like you did in the video is to put it on the pole and hold it away from you so you don't get wet
Thanks David. I was being a bit dramatic. Just got my feet a bit wet which wouldn't have happened if I wore wellys. I don't know if it would spin quickly enough if the hose wasn't held so close 🤔
@@CharlieDIYte it does spin just as quick I clean my rollers that way all the time works a treat and no wet feet
@@davidmcarthur1093 Ah, thanks David. Have you ever tried this? www.directnine.uk/products/purdy-140755200-brush-and-roller-spinner-cleaning-tool-112-and-134 A LOT of people recommended it to me after watching my vid.
@@CharlieDIYte No haven't tried that product . I have a lot to paint in the new year so might be worth the investment.
I’m getting rain splash on my new render
and a soakaway with pebbles on top might be the answer. Kind Regards
Excellent video and job description. Glad you got your lass doing a bit. About time.🙂. That kit looks decent I'll be investing in some items👍.
Yes exactly 😉 Thanks buddy. Glad you found it useful.
Metasset is the business. Thanks for the tips.
It's great stuff, Gerry - you just have to remember to extrude a decent length of it before you get started because I've got two short sections where it hasn't quite mixed properly 👊
A great video and some very handy tips.
Thanks Tahir and great to hear from you 👍
Great video!
Brilliant video as always. Will be doing this to my house once I’ve stopped laughing at all your innuendos 😂🤣
Oh the crack filling video 😬🤣 Thanks Phil 😉
@CharlieDIYte very helpful video thanks as just about to embark on painting my 1940’s tyrolean render. Please could you indicate what length GT Convertible pole you utilised as different lengths available?
I painted my render with paint from a company called Renotex, absolutely fantastic paint to apply and still looking good today after being applied 5yrs ago.
Thanks Colin. I'll take a look at that. 👍
Looks great Charlie. What colour did you go for on the walls?
House looks fantastic Charlie! I painted the render on front of my cottage with Sandtex which was ok. I went to the trouble of sheeting and masking windows and door due to splatter risk. Did this product perform well in that respect? Great tips as per normal. Many thanks for your endeavours👍
Thanks James, that's a useful tip. There wasn't a lot of splattering but I did cover the lower sills, and the lower windows are coming out so I wasn't too bothered about them. I should have mentioned that. There's always something.
I found sandtex and weathershield to be very poor on my 200 year old cottage. I’ve switched to pliolite this year.
That's interesting. It's good paint Little Green but I've never used their exterior paint. Please let me know how it fares. 👍
@@CharlieDIYte also used Little Green, went on well but may be causing the paint underneath to lift (taking the outer layer of LG off too), but it may just be something I did (or didn't) do.
@@chrisgordon8486 Did you spray or roller? If you used a roller then the second coat may have gone on too quick or first coat too thick?
@@MrWLJ71 thanks for the tip, defo went on quite thick but also everything underneath was pretty weathered.
Thanks!
Purdy make a paint comb for cleaning brush’s,it’s made from metal. I’ve just bought one but haven’t had a chance to try it out yet 👍
Yes I've just seen a video for that. Would be interesting to know what you think.
@@CharlieDIYte Just drill a hole with a bit of wiggle room in the side that you can place the hose nozzle into, then take im and fire lol!
At the beginning of the video, I felt like a dentist filling a patient's teeth,Very delicate work😁😁
This was incredibly useful, thanks so much. New subscriber 👍
Thanks, really appreciate the sub.
Do you have videos on how to render external and interior walls?
Hi Charlie. I know this video is a year or so old now but what colour is your render in from emperor paints and also what colour are your downpipes. Combination looks amazing! Hope your well? Marc. 👍
Hi Charlie,
My white KRend is developing a slight algae/green tint. Do you have any guidance you could offer me to deal with this please? Thank you.
What is the RAL number for the exterior paint on the render and your windows please Charlie?
Using a Dandi paint brush and roller cleaner works really well; I’ve used one for many years. Amazon sell them.😉🇬🇧💂♂️
Thanks for this. Yes I definitely need one of these. 👍
Good video - thanks. 👍
Hi Charlie. I have fungus on oan side of the house, how I can fix it. Thank you
One question can I do this paint over my K rend for my external wall ?
