Case in point some markets changed a character with a rabbit theme's name to Alice (for wonderland references) rather than keep the original name of Alixandria (Alix with an 'i' being a French thing) though weirdly they didn't change Adrien's name to the American spelling. It is like the localisation is down to how someone feels on the day. I tend to hand wave most of it away though as some of it is down to personal taste Not sure why Kim needs a different last name in every territory though (slight exageration)

TBH, if there is no easy translation, ya, just don't translate. I remember I first learned how Japanese honorifics worked from a long translator's note in Negima. Because the TL realized they were too important, and had too much subtilty to do anything other than use them, so they inserted a page explaining what they were, why they felt they needed to be there. Even as a teen, I appreciated being treated as an adult in that way. As an adult, I EXPECT it.

Much of Kishida's cabinet has ties to these foreign investment firms too so he's been backed. Kishida was elected as Prime Minister via a special election that was not done by the people after Abe was offed. Kishida's approval rating in Japan is 23% and he's part of the whole Globalization/One World Government and One World Culture group. Culture in Japan has been on the decline for a few years now. But ever since Kishida went into office, everything has suffered. Hence with Capcom going woke. While the people hate it, there are big money players that seem to want to continue spreading woke culture.

I think localization by the right people can be good. Like how Gojo says "Nah, I'd win" instead of "I will win". But any localization that tries to erase Japanese culture (for example the infamous pokemon jelly filled donuts) shouldn't be done.

Where I come from, puns and very few cultural differences have to be translated. If not, they keep the original message and put translator notes at the end. And by translated, I mean phrases that no one here uses on a daily basis. On dubbed anime, whenever there is a phrase of humor on the original, it is translated into a phrase everyone in my country has heard and finds funny, instead of inserting a Gen Z humor.
The sad thing is that these clowns are also gatekeeping the "professional" localization space so no one who isn't as unprofessional as them can get in.
ISTM that many puns and sayings have other language equivalents which mean essentially the same thing. That's language localization. However, I'm not sure even that is necessary. Learning these differences is part of the charm. Otherwise it feels like going to a Thai restaurant and tasting their chicken nuggets.

That sort of stuff shows me that the world is unique and full of flavour, not some rehash from the West poorly edited into the Eastern market.

We also have another phrase: "In eye of other can notice a speck of dust, while in own eye cannot see a log" Meaning of this is: Person nitpicks everyone else for smallest things, while ignores huge flaws in himself There are also such things as: "Be a white crow" - "Stand out from crowd" "Pug barking on the elephant" - has double meaning "Be strong by trying to fight overwhelming entity" or "Look dumb to public due to non-stop screaming about something that has nothing to do with you" [it is from fable. And our fables had such thing as "morale", aka meaning written in them.]

There was one of these idiots defending these localizations trying to convince me that somehow having Eunie from Xenoblade Chronicles 3 cursing all the time and dropping f-bombs willy nilly is somehow "consistant" with her character from the Japanese version just because she speaks in a more casual Japanese even when most of her "cursing" in the Japenese version were fewer and even farther in between and weren't too aggressive...or worse yet adding in unnecessary curse words when they weren't there. They're like someone who's heard of tea with two cubes of sugar in it...decided to make the same thing, but added in 10 extra cubes of sugar and called it the same thing. Some people just think making a script more stupid is somehow an "improvement" and that is a problem.

@@megaultrasonic I haven't played the game in a while (and I played in Japanese)...but I remember her using curse words unnecessarily in English videos (maybe not f-bombs specifically), but she uses terms like "bitch", "asshole", etc. The game also has a character using terms like "bitchqueen" and "go die in a ditch you turd" among other cringe dialogue.
From what I seen most them them are taunting the audience. Remember that one girl who worked on localizing Dragon maid actively mocked people and told them to look for her work because they feel like they are both right, and hate people who like that stuff (Likely because of the former)

It wouldn't help. Japanese people don't care about overseas fans. They are very insular and xenophobic. And frankly the rest of the world is just proving them right more and more each day. They see overseas licensing as little more than a way to earn a quick buck. If American suits tell them that localization will be most profitable, they will happily let them stuff their work full of jelly donuts. As long as their compatriot fans get the intended experience, that's more than enough for them. Us getting their stuff is just an unintended side product. And that's the way it should be. Japanese entertainment is best when produced without a single thought about the outside world in the creators' minds. Translations are best when they are unofficial.

I hate it. This is how you destroy an authors intent, world and story. Honestly I'm fed up with this disregard for the actual creator. At times localisers seem to outright just view the creators culture or beliefs as inferior or wrong. A translator doesn't get to decide what is acceptable or not. As in fiction nothing is off limits, sure 18+ scenes might get censored and anything else that is illegal but otherwise a creator is free to write and draw anything they want. Some people obviously aren't going to like overly detailed murder descriptions but that's on the reader to decide, not for some localiser to decide it. Now yes there are times when a direct translation can not or will not work due to no word that is equivalent but most of the time no-one is even asking for that. We just don't want a random buzzword thrown in that we know no fantasy world person would ever utter in their life or random often petty insults at someone(s) or something. On older subs you had editors and translators notes explaining things or words on screen which disappeared when fansubs went heavily underground. Hell doing this for say books is easier. You just put a tiny reference number beside an untranslated word or certain sentence with a few pages at the back of the book, explaining what it means or why the translator didn't translate a word.

A couple Manhwa's I've read, the Transmigrated MC in the native text would recite an old Chinese poem but the translated version would replace the original poem with an old English one.. Like how tf am I supposed to learn important cultural and societal references of another culture if it just gets entirely replaced? It also sometimes ruins the scene entirely since replacing one poem with one meaning with another thats kinda similar but not really changes how the scene plays out and the subtle meaning behind why the poem was spoken in the first place!
i miss translators notes i was watching higurashi recently and a translators note popped up for a line i didnt understand as a westerner and it just made me miss this seemingly bygone era
Higurashi is so good. I'm going through the successor series Umineko right now through the visual novels, and the fan mod actually programmed a way to put translation notes in small script above the text when applicable (i.e. a character says "No one eats a Christmas-cake after December 25th", and above it is a note saying "No one wants a woman older than 25"), and when it's too much to put in the script, they put the note in the game's Tips menu. I think it's a perfect balance between making the dialogue sound natural while also explaining what was changed due to fundamental language differences, like how Japanese has like a dozen words to say "I", but we only really have one way to do that, at least in the first-person.
Watching the Monogatori series felt very odd at first due to the jokes and wordplay not translating well but it helped me learn more about Japanese wordplay and jokes worked because I heard the joke and could understand what was going on why it would be funny when I compare the subtitles and I wpuld piece together what was going on even if it didn't translate to English exactly the same. If localizers got a hold of the series it would feel so weird because you would here the wordplay on Ararararagi's name or a clear double entendre but the subtitles would be saying Gyatt rizzity, white men bad or something.
As someone who uses ChatGPT to advertise my business because making a post daily that's unique is tiring, that first line for the "What is Localization?" part screams ChatGPT, as well as the emotes used on each title line.

I know you can sub in gen Z humor stuff, stuff like I reference above, and other forms of bad localization with AI but I’m hoping that Japan will use AI in house and program it themselves and the foreign markets just import it or print their translations.
i'm kinda surprised that it doesn't happen that much yet, it's much cheaper to just push it through chat GPT and say "localize this from japanese to english while keeping the original intent intact" and it likely does a very good job, maybe hire some english speakers in Japan to go over it, much cheaper to just have 1-3 english speaking employee's rather than having an entire company in the US doing this for you.

You know i remember when I started reading Naruto back in highschool, almost 20 years ago now. And i remember seeing characters get mad or have reactions at weird points. I didnt get it until i noticed all these moments had this little mark next to them directing me to the side or back pages. Where it would explain the wordplay at work in the original japanese language. It was so fulfilling to learn about the way language shifted like that and how jokes and insults differed in another language. It was so fun to learn about how the language worked as well

Of course this is so complicated to translate some words like "aniki" to English and Portuguese (i'm from Brazil), but this is complete nuts. Aniki is common use to gangs, for example, to call elder members, also school friends with a sense of respect and admiration. An easy way: Aniki is used by Shinji to Kiryu in Yakuza 1 also by Syrius/Sho to Jaden/Judai in Yu-Gi-Oh GX.

I think Gintama had translators notes in the anime (been a while since I watched any of it). You had the subtitle, but occasionally an additional line of text that explained the pun/reference. And that was on Crunchyroll of all places. It doesn't seem exactly unreasonable.
Yep notes. I learn a lot from this about Japanese culture. Even when it comes to unique Japanese phrases. If you don't familiar with it it's ok, you can always learn new things. Localization = censorship
Those kinds of situations make me just sad. Like, i know at some point these companies will realize that this whole locations bs, will not bring the same sales, maybe we would need to have one of the go completely broke, as much that would suck, but it would make them hopefully see what customers trully want. I remember back in the day when Excel Saga was first hitting the US and I was getting the DVDs one at a time...Even though it was dubbed (and what an amazing performance from Excel's English VAs!), they maintained as much of the original dialogue and in-jokes as possible. They also included very handy translators notes as an alternate feature that explained all of them. To this day, that series is one of my favorites, and a major reason for that are those on-screen notations in the middle of all the insanity.
Japanese player: I like the part where the hero says “Your age of tyranny is over villain!” English dub player: huh weird, when I played it the hero said “Bruh like your skibidi Ohio imposter stuff is soooo like not trendyyy I’m gonna like totally emergency meeting you and like you’re gonna be fanum chungus taxed bestie!”
I loved the TL Notes in the early fandub era, I learned so much about the general lingo and niche words from them. Compared to now where if you actually understand what they're saying and you read the subs, you're going to immediately notice a big disconnect in not just what is literally being said but also """the vibe""" that they even referer to. The notes just up and disappeared at some point and I very much miss them. Translators and localizers need to start using TL Notes again.
Translation is an ART and not a boat to ship your own opinion. 13:38 THAT can be important. I remember movies from a certain actor called Bud Spencer. His movies were in Italian, but I watched them with the german translation. The translators added their own puns, but those were so perfect for those movies that they started a whole cult following.

Miraculous Ladybug occasionally feels like they elbowed the French out of it, so it isn't just The Japanese on the receiving end of this sort of thing... I suspect the Witcher had a fair bit of bonkers translations in it too as the Translations of the Novels were pretty kooky too..
Case in point some markets changed a character with a rabbit theme's name to Alice (for wonderland references) rather than keep the original name of Alixandria (Alix with an 'i' being a French thing) though weirdly they didn't change Adrien's name to the American spelling. It is like the localisation is down to how someone feels on the day.
I tend to hand wave most of it away though as some of it is down to personal taste

TBH, if there is no easy translation, ya, just don't translate.
I remember I first learned how Japanese honorifics worked from a long translator's note in Negima. Because the TL realized they were too important, and had too much subtilty to do anything other than use them, so they inserted a page explaining what they were, why they felt they needed to be there. Even as a teen, I appreciated being treated as an adult in that way.

We also have a huge problem in Japan right now with Prime Minister Kishida. Many Japanese think he is a plant by the WEF (World Economic Forum) after Abe was offed during his campaign. Kishida is as supporter of Blackrock, the large financial business that has its influence all over the world that promotes DEI, destroying the middle class housing opportunities, etc. Kishida, also has been putting in place policy after policy that allows citizen's private information to be public record. Next of all Kishida is part of "displacement theory" where his solution to population decline is to open up tourism and foreign investment firms along with also lowering standards for work visas. Everyone knows about the trouble maker tourist streamers in Japan. Well this an effect caused by Kishida's policies. Prime Minister Kishida has been asked to step down and retire and was even attempted to voted out but Kishida has refused to step down and the official election term was pushed back. Much of Kishida's cabinet has ties to these foreign investment firms too so he's been backed. Kishida was elected as Prime Minister via a special election that was not done by the people after Abe was offed. Kishida's approval rating in Japan is 23% and he's part of the whole Globalization/One World Government and One World Culture group. Culture in Japan has been on the decline for a few years now. But ever since Kishida went into office, everything has suffered.
Hence with Capcom going woke. While the people hate it, there are big money players that seem to want to continue spreading woke culture.

The largest problem is tourism issues and toxic investment firms sneaking in with the good companies. Japan has a thing called karoshi which is death from over work at an exploiting company. Many people in the work force want to see change in the Japanese work culture and foreign habits are appealing to Japan. The problem is we get the authoritarians who mix into the crowd trying to sell "snake oil" (false promises and lies). I think localization by the right people can be good. Like how Gojo says "Nah, I'd win" instead of "I will win". But any localization that tries to erase Japanese culture (for example the infamous pokemon jelly filled donuts) shouldn't be done.

Where I come from, puns and very few cultural differences have to be translated. If not, they keep the original message and put translator notes at the end. And by translated, I mean phrases that no one here uses on a daily basis.
On dubbed anime, whenever there is a phrase of humor on the original, it is translated into a phrase everyone in my country has heard and finds funny, instead of inserting a Gen Z humor.
As someone who worked as a translator before, I wholeheartedly agree. These people have no integrity and slander their entire profession.
The sad thing is that these clowns are also gatekeeping the "professional" localization space so no one who isn't as unprofessional as them can get in.
ISTM that many puns and sayings have other language equivalents which mean essentially the same thing. That's language localization. However, I'm not sure even that is necessary. Learning these differences is part of the charm. Otherwise it feels like going to a Thai restaurant and tasting their chicken nuggets.

I do not care for example for nuances like "Orcs in Eastern media are portrayed as boarmen instead of your usual western orc." That sort of stuff shows me that the world is unique and full of flavour, not some rehash from the West poorly edited into the Eastern market.
Imagine some kid who grew up in a bad neighbourhood, bad family situation, crappy job and all he wants is a little escapism but then the media he’s trying to enjoy is just holding a mirror and going “hey look it’s you” and he’s forced to think about his tiring life.

Try older series, the lexicon is generally more closer to original script.

As a russian I freaking love unofficial subtitles, because of the translators' notes. They're really helping me learn the language and understand the culture
"To make sure players get the intended experience without feeling like something got lost in the process" - they're rewriting entire lines of dialogue, the meaning already is being lost in the process, I don't want the vibes I want original content

The keyword in that sentence really is the "feeling like" part. They are removing things, they just don't want us to notice it.
There was one of these idiots defending these localizations trying to convince me that somehow having Eunie from Xenoblade Chronicles 3 cursing all the time and dropping f-bombs willy nilly is somehow "consistant" with her character from the Japanese version just because she speaks in a more casual Japanese even when most of her "cursing" in the Japenese version were fewer and even farther in between and weren't too aggressive...or worse yet adding in unnecessary curse words when they weren't there.
They're like someone who's heard of tea with two cubes of sugar in it...decided to make the same thing, but added in 10 extra cubes of sugar and called it the same thing.
Some people just think making a script more stupid is somehow an "improvement" and that is a problem.

@@megaultrasonic I haven't played the game in a while (and I played in Japanese)...but I remember her using curse words unnecessarily in English videos (maybe not f-bombs specifically), but she uses terms like "bitch", "asshole", etc.
The game also has a character using terms like "bitchqueen" and "go die in a ditch you turd" among other cringe dialogue.

It wouldn't help. Japanese people don't care about overseas fans. They are very insular and xenophobic. And frankly the rest of the world is just proving them right more and more each day. They see overseas licensing as little more than a way to earn a quick buck. If American suits tell them that localization will be most profitable, they will happily let them stuff their work full of jelly donuts. As long as their compatriot fans get the intended experience, that's more than enough for them.
Us getting their stuff is just an unintended side product. And that's the way it should be. Japanese entertainment is best when produced without a single thought about the outside world in the creators' minds. Translations are best when they are unofficial.
Capcom wants another 2009-2014 situation on their hands again.

I hate it. This is how you destroy an authors intent, world and story. Honestly I'm fed up with this disregard for the actual creator. At times localisers seem to outright just view the creators culture or beliefs as inferior or wrong. A translator doesn't get to decide what is acceptable or not. As in fiction nothing is off limits, sure 18+ scenes might get censored and anything else that is illegal but otherwise a creator is free to write and draw anything they want. Some people obviously aren't going to like overly detailed murder descriptions but that's on the reader to decide, not for some localiser to decide it. Now yes there are times when a direct translation can not or will not work due to no word that is equivalent but most of the time no-one is even asking for that. We just don't want a random buzzword thrown in that we know no fantasy world person would ever utter in their life or random often petty insults at someone(s) or something. On older subs you had editors and translators notes explaining things or words on screen which disappeared when fansubs went heavily underground. Hell doing this for say books is easier. You just put a tiny reference number beside an untranslated word or certain sentence with a few pages at the back of the book, explaining what it means or why the translator didn't translate a word.
It’s no surprise why people don’t like localizers. When given the ability/opportunity to do this evil they’ll do it and expect you to just accept it. Reject this idiocy.

A couple Manhwa's I've read, the Transmigrated MC in the native text would recite an old Chinese poem but the translated version would replace the original poem with an old English one.. Like how tf am I supposed to learn important cultural and societal references of another culture if it just gets entirely replaced? It also sometimes ruins the scene entirely since replacing one poem with one meaning with another thats kinda similar but not really changes how the scene plays out and the subtle meaning behind why the poem was spoken in the first place!
I'm expecting one day to see references to The Red Oni Who Cried replaced with Shrek references. Actually, I'm surprised I hadn't seen it happen yet.

i was watching higurashi recently and a translators note popped up for a line i didnt understand as a westerner and it just made me miss this seemingly bygone era
Higurashi is so good. I'm going through the successor series Umineko right now through the visual novels, and the fan mod actually programmed a way to put translation notes in small script above the text when applicable (i.e. a character says "No one eats a Christmas-cake after December 25th", and above it is a note saying "No one wants a woman older than 25"), and when it's too much to put in the script, they put the note in the game's Tips menu. I think it's a perfect balance between making the dialogue sound natural while also explaining what was changed due to fundamental language differences, like how Japanese has like a dozen words to say "I", but we only really have one way to do that, at least in the first-person.
Watching the Monogatori series felt very odd at first due to the jokes and wordplay not translating well but it helped me learn more about Japanese wordplay and jokes worked because I heard the joke and could understand what was going on why it would be funny when I compare the subtitles and I wpuld piece together what was going on even if it didn't translate to English exactly the same. If localizers got a hold of the series it would feel so weird because you would here the wordplay on Ararararagi's name or a clear double entendre but the subtitles would be saying Gyatt rizzity, white men bad or something.
As someone who uses ChatGPT to advertise my business because making a post daily that's unique is tiring, that first line for the "What is Localization?" part screams ChatGPT, as well as the emotes used on each title line.

I know you can sub in gen Z humor stuff, stuff like I reference above, and other forms of bad localization with AI but I’m hoping that Japan will use AI in house and program it themselves and the foreign markets just import it or print their translations.

i'm kinda surprised that it doesn't happen that much yet, it's much cheaper to just push it through chat GPT and say "localize this from japanese to english while keeping the original intent intact" and it likely does a very good job, maybe hire some english speakers in Japan to go over it, much cheaper to just have 1-3 english speaking employee's rather than having an entire company in the US doing this for you.

@@TallulahSoie Nope I absolutely do, The British sought to expand and colonize large parts of the whole world and make it their own home, they had no respect for other cultures and only saw it as a way to expand their own culture for their own benefit because they deemed other cultures were below them, they were savage etc. Localization does the same thing, they determined that japanese culture is too harmful offensive , below them, so they decided to change it to make it fit their worldview and their agendas, they forced japanese people to change their own work because they found it offensive. They refused to let the western audience see japanese work for what it is, because they found it offensive. It's obviously not an apples to apples comparison but it is quite similar indeed.

You know i remember when I started reading Naruto back in highschool, almost 20 years ago now. And i remember seeing characters get mad or have reactions at weird points. I didnt get it until i noticed all these moments had this little mark next to them directing me to the side or back pages. Where it would explain the wordplay at work in the original japanese language. It was so fulfilling to learn about the way language shifted like that and how jokes and insults differed in another language. It was so fun to learn about how the language worked as well

Aniki is common use to gangs, for example, to call elder members, also school friends with a sense of respect and admiration.
An easy way: Aniki is used by Shinji to Kiryu in Yakuza 1 also by Syrius/Sho to Jaden/Judai in Yu-Gi-Oh GX.

I think Gintama had translators notes in the anime (been a while since I watched any of it). You had the subtitle, but occasionally an additional line of text that explained the pun/reference. And that was on Crunchyroll of all places. It doesn't seem exactly unreasonable.

Yep notes. I learn a lot from this about Japanese culture. Even when it comes to unique Japanese phrases. If you don't familiar with it it's ok, you can always learn new things.

I remember back in the day when Excel Saga was first hitting the US and I was getting the DVDs one at a time...Even though it was dubbed (and what an amazing performance from Excel's English VAs!), they maintained as much of the original dialogue and in-jokes as possible. They also included very handy translators notes as an alternate feature that explained all of them. To this day, that series is one of my favorites, and a major reason for that are those on-screen notations in the middle of all the insanity.
I remember that, the fact they kept everything is amazing, nowdays it would be impossible for an anime like excel saga.

I loved the TL Notes in the early fandub era, I learned so much about the general lingo and niche words from them.
Compared to now where if you actually understand what they're saying and you read the subs, you're going to immediately notice a big disconnect in not just what is literally being said but also """the vibe""" that they even referer to.
The notes just up and disappeared at some point and I very much miss them.
Translators and localizers need to start using TL Notes again.
