Man, the setting of the prince just standing there like "oh no..." and the music added with "Game Over" just makes it so sad. It's like Donkey Kong Country game over screen sad.
With this bad ending, the game basically tells you that you have literally wasted your time. All that effort, all that pain, all that dying and retrying, to finally reach the end of the game... only to find out it was all for absolutely nothing. I think this makes it worse than the original bad ending. As frustrating as it was, at least it stopped your game immediately when the timer ran out, and you would not go through the pain of completing every level for nothing.
From a gameplay perspective, I find the SNES "no direct game over" actually more interesting. If that's the first time you try to complete the game and you get an time up half of the game, you have a better advantage with the SNES version since you can still learn how the next levels looks like directly without being worried about the time. On the original version, you have to start again until you reach the point you got the game over and still learn from there about the parts you've missed... still with that limited time.

Great game. I had the PC version, and a friend had this SNES version. Newer games need to bring back the damsel in distress :)
