You're the only real hiker I've ever followed. Most hiking channels are fakes who hike 1/2 mile into the woods near their house and brag about their $500 tent doing a good job. Your a true soul doing what most people on the planet would never even contemplate. So glad TH-cam recommended your channel

At the end of the day Jack, you're a wonderful human being. You challenge yourself and strive to be a better person physically, spiritually, and mentally. Negativity is annoying and such a waste of energy; don't know why people insist on investing so much time on it. Continue to rise above it as you always do my friend. You mean that you are actually enjoying hiking and camping on the trail. From what I have seen from a number of TH-camrs on trail they act like the goal was to stay in hostels and hotels and eat out every chance you get. Of course most of them have already quit. It seems to me that they were just trying to get a TH-cam following, but you are the real deal. I especially appreciate you using budget gear on this trip. Awesome video too!

  • @viadharmawheel
    @viadharmawheel 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

Honestly, you seem very happy on this trip - even more so than your other trips on YT IMHO. You have more smiles on these videos than any other. If I were to project my section hikes I would be 5k+, and probably ++ for the extra zeros on a thru hike. But, if I took my 18 year old self many decades ago I could do it for little money. And that chainsaw snoring was something else and reminds me of a trip a while ago in South America...

These are real struggles that plp trying to thru hike have. Especially the younger ones
    Who dont have much.
I enjoy watching you more than most because your showing what can be accomplished on a limited budget. I have learned these lessons the hard way trying to budget as much as possible on trail. I have completed the trail earning money along the way often I've started with $20 or less in my pocket. When i started this finding a TH-cam channel doing something like this would have been such a tremendous gift. I see plp like dan becker making a pay resource for plp getting into hiking and no shame to him but i feel people would benefit from your knowledge far more than most TH-cam hiking celebrities and its free!

    • @QuadzillaHikes

@@QuadzillaHikes Jon conti hitting his sos story would be laughable if plp hadn't had to spend their day trying to help him then him being so incredibly ungrateful. Dan on the other hand was actually having medical issues. This jon guy told his rescue he was out of food. He wasn't he was out of fuel lol who goes out into snow without the knowledge to build a fire and boil snow. I go back to that video randomly to comment and remind him how silly he is lol.

I hate when people feel the need to degrade a challenge. It's called a challenge for a reason. lol it doesn't mean he will love every minute, hate it the entire time, or even make it. It's definitely informative and entertaining to watch either way. I'm excited for you guys! The gear videos alone were already worth the watch. My favorite cheap purchase is 50c ranch packets when regular ramen gets old. I love the re-supply ideas! lmfao the realism is great, love the chocolate milk.

  • @Oldsparkey

I figured you were doing it this time as a personal challenge and demonstration that high costing gear is not really needed since you have done it and other trails the other way. Besides it is your hike and you should do it your way which I am enjoying watching. I'm a snorer and have been described as a Air Boat chasing a heard of Wild Hogs. Personally I have never heard myself. One trip there were Air Boats chasing Wild Hogs so my buddies might of been mistaking. ?????

I don't get the negative comments? What are they thinking?? It's a fun challenge, QZ is about as expert and accomplished as you will find for thru hiking. I find it fascinating. umm folks who snore should consider carrying a 2 lb CPAP-battery combo, or at least get an anti-snore appliance made. I have used both in wilderness and in hiker rifugios, and it ensures I do not snore.

Loving the challenge! The expense keeps so many from ever starting so this should help a lot of people with ideas. I hiked with some folks last year that were on a strict budget and I lived that life with them for awhile. It can be fun to hitch instead of shuttle, find free places to stay, and to find treasures in hiker boxes. They knew lots of tricks to save money. Negative comments can be very motivational- got to prove them wrong.

You probably know this, but if you you don't, pack ice around the fuel canister to be filled and put the canister to be drained into the sunlight for a while before connecting the two together and the cold fuel on the bottom will condense while the Hot fuel on top will expand into the cold (bottom) canister.

I feed corn to my backyard deer in winter and now when the does have fawns to feed. One doe will come up close to the house and look for me through the window. She stomps and huffs to get my attention to bring corn. Unfortunately, one of this years fawns died. The deer herd dynamics are very amusing.
When my son was talking about hiking the AT, I gave him a budget of $10,000 for everything and I would drive him to Springer and pick him up at MT K. He was too afraid to leave me alone. When an old Army wound acted up he saved my life and he is more worried about me than I am.
I think that big bug was a dobson. Life should be lived on a budget most of the time. Get ahead on your money and avoid debt traps. This is true on trail and the real world. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

I know this was the past but speaking of restaurant buffets, Erwin has a Pizza Plus with an all you can eat lunch buffet. No guarantees, but try sticking around to the end of the buffet hour (2pm); the owner might offer people to-go boxes since they have to trash the buffet leftovers. I ate 3 plates of salad, 7 slices and 8 slices to-go at the one in Damascus (closed). Next Pizza Plus is in Pearisburg but that obviously competes with the chinese buffet.

Its almost worth it to buy those nasal opener things for people who snore really badly, super cheap at the dollar store I think. Just so you can not feel bad if you wake them up lmao.

Does $1000 include your resupply? We are working on a very minimal budget. We are sending boxes to ourselves and buying food cards ahead of time for places to eat. We don’t plan on eating at the expensive restaurants or drinking

Hiker meals have got to be the pinnacle of expense, right? $10-11 for 550-600 calories. One per day for 120 days is $1,200 by itself. For just a small dinner.

Most thru hikers don't eat them regularly, like you said too expensive

I don't understand why people want to sleep in a shelter (unless I am the only one).

Well by LNT standards you should sleep in a shelter if you can as it has 0 impact on the environment but yea I agree I have a tough time sleeping next to others and would much rather be in my tent.
