  • Welcome to my film , Shocking True Cost Of Ebay. I made today after I sold a gold coin on eBay and was really shocked and disgusted at how much it cost me. So I have made this to make you aware of the true cost of selling on eBay. I look at the cost of private sellers and business sellers on eBay and show you the paypal cost also. EBay is a very good place to sell but please make sure you understand the costs involved or you could end up losing a lot of money. many resellers ask the question should they open a business account or stay on a private account, well this film shows how ebay penalise you for being a business, they offer so much for private sellers and it is so much cheaper to sell if your a private seller that it almost begs the question is it worth having a business account at all with them.

    Ebay do charge a lot but no other online auction site has as many customers worldwide , also very quick for selling , they basically have sellers over a barrel , but if you dont use them its hard to keep a reselling business going.....

    In general your overall costs are approx 15% + and that includes Ebay and Paypal and if your sales are less then it can go to approx 19 % . It is very expensive but about the same as any general auction fees .
    If you you go to sellers hub in the traffic section and click on that it will give you a full brake down of all the costs for your overall sales for 31 days which gives you the best idea of how much it really costs and add on your own costs of business . The true fact is that its very expensive but it seems we have little choice but to be on it

    Thanks for the video, Walter. I certainly have my own frustrations with Ebay, but I feel their fees are reasonable for the worldwide selling platform that they are offering. I also have a Basic level store here in the US and there are enough advantages to make it worthwhile for me. For example, I get a pretty decent discount on most of my shipping costs. Plus, I like the convenience of having all my items in one 'store' and being able to put the store on vacation, or change the handling time etc. I agree with you that sellers without stores do seem to get a lot more free listing promotions than business sellers, but that may be changing slowly. I've started to get some 4-day 500 free additional listing promotions recently - so I just end a bunch of listings early and relist them for free so I don't have to pay the extra 25c per listing over my allotment of 250 listings.
    Congratulations on the coin sale, my friend! Very nice to pick that up for melt value! You deserve it.

      Thank you very much Tbh I made the film to answer the question of a lot of resellers who keep asking if they should open a business account. I am not happy with the fees tbh but accepted them long time ago. I don’t like that they charge percentage on postage and that they reward private sellers. They are the o my company in world who don’t offer discount for business even Royal Mail send parcels cheaper for business compared to public as they know we are gonna send loads. eBay should be same we pay hundred each month and we are not going anywhere unlike the public who may list one or two and leave. But I will admit there isn’t another site that gets same results as eBay.

    I think 10% is fair as a commision but as you point out all the other charges add up quickly! The PayPal fees are horrific for simply processing money and the monopoly they have means we have no choice. The other fees I strongly disagree with is the commission on postage its truly disgusting and pushes up the cost for customers.

      Hi thank you for your comment. The main point of this film is to show sellers to stay on a private account as long as possible. But it’s not really fair to let private sell cheaper than a business. With any other company you get discount for bulk not penalties. I sell through Christie’s in London for ten percent and they do lots more for their money.

    you are a businessman. you run a business. all business expenses get passed to customers. it's how it all works. you buy cheap from carboots and sell for many times the buy price. I don't hear you moaning about you buy for £2 and sell for £20.eBay is a business making money. if you don't like it then don't list or put 15% on all your listings to cover the costs. really is simple. I can't really see the point of this video..... all this said with respect and it is my opinion.

    • @AntiquesArena
      @AntiquesArena  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi jace. Thank you for your comment and opinion. I have no problem with you giving your opinion. Yes you are right it’s up to me to accept ebays fees or not. And yes I take large profits on my sales thank god. Not everyone does mind. However this film was made because when the Facebook group tat chat existed there were a lot of people who didn’t know wether to go business account or stay private sellers and this film was done to show that eBay reward private sellers with no fees and max 1 pound selling fee while businesses pay when you add it all up 20 percent of their take eBay is the only company who don’t reward bulk I am lucky I buy from car boot sales but most of the people who were on the tat chat used auctions or charity shops and worked on small margines. And after eBay fees were not making a profit. So the point of the film is to make people aware of the true costs and they can decide then to accept or not.

When I hit cap on my shop I start listing on my private account, and yes that sounds unfair where you pay for shop fee all transaction have same a private fee nut you have few only shop to use options and for some shop they are useful. You have right on all but ebay protect his income by charging for postage 10%, some people, days ago, make fixt price for item worth £10 on level £1 and pay fee just from £1 and postage on £9, they have profit from £10 and ebay fee from £1. ebay is private company and they have right to do it, and you and I agree to that extortion :). I personally calculate my income by deduct 25% from final value and in my experience is about right amount.

    Hi M. Walter, Love all your Videos, you are absolutely correct, compared to any other selling platform Ebay is the most expensive platform there is. The Private seller is at a distinct advantage but even then, it is overly expensive for them too in my opinion. What is Ebays total cost for selling your items on "concession" " Concession is all Ebay is, and it cost them nothing, all the risk are at the sellers' expense, do they qualify buyers (no)? How many scammers out there stealing from buyers on Ebay? Ever try to communicate with Ebay security? It is practically impossible unless you are very persistent on following ALL leads to get in touch with Security, what happens when you do manage to send Security an e-mail, you get a notification that the link is for law enforcement only. What can local law enforcement do? nothing much except for statistics not like they will travel to some foreign country to arrest anyone, example Nigeria law enforcement does care at all. Ebay should be accountable for allowing the scammers to steal on their site a concession shop would have to pay you for your loss*. Ebay also owns PayPal and 95% of the time take the buyers' side no matter what. Finally, where do scammers visit the most, Ebay of course and they duplicate Ebay and Paypal notifications with their logos and very slight differences, try that with examples McDonald's or Coca Cola and see what happens. ( Ebay and PayPal = 1 entity in reality ). I refuse to allow my selling point to list on Ebay all together, and for now, I get more sells through FB marketplace for FREE and looking into the true cost of selling with Google at this point. Cheers Mate you're awesome! Thanks.

    Hiya, A bit of a sting on your fees on your coin :( . Private sellers also sometimes have a listing promotion when they can pay only up to £1.00 final valuation fee on newly listed items. If you can wait to list your item it would be worth considering listing higher priced items as a private seller on these promotion days ( they quite often run for about 4 days over bank holidays etc). Tax wise as long as you submit that into your business accounts as income it should be acceptable.

You could charge your buyers extra, Unless you offer a Free postage (which is never free, but included) ...Ebay is getting greedy, Why?-because they can.... Some items often eat my entire tape , that's £0.50, plus the label 5p, and bubble wrap, 20p.all times 100 items ..

Reverse Prices are optional, and most sellers just use Buy It Now so they don't need to pay that.

      Hi George. The main point of today’s film is to show people to stay as a private seller as long as they can before opening a business account. The fees are not fair. Tbh George What I think would be fair would be abolish the theft of charging us ten percent on the postage cost. We don’t make on that It is money to the postal company And if they can allow private sellers free listings and just pay the final fee and have offers then extend them offers to the business sellers. eBay are the only company who don’t reward bulk in the world.

    • @georgef822
      @georgef822 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AntiquesArena Well ok, I encorporated postage charge in the item price and put free postage on the listing, that way I know how much everything going to cost me, and what I'll end up with. I work out all the costs of every item before I list it so I know what's coming. I don't bother with reserves, they're quite unnecessary in my opinion, I just put a Buy It Now for the price I'm happy to take after all the fees.
      I'd recommend, If you do a lot of auctions, start the price at the bare minimum you're happy to accept after fees so you don't have to pay for putting on a reserve price.
      Forget and ignore Ebay's recommendation to start it at 99p or whatever the recommended price is for that item because most of the time their advice on pricing is b*ll*cks.
      Encorporating Postage in the item price might work well, especially for you because antiques generally cost a lot to post and seeing the extra charge on the listing might put some buyers off.
      I think, back in the old days you didn't used to get charged on postage on Ebay. So say for example you wanted to sell something for £20.00 plus £3.99 Postage, you'd only get charged 10% of the £20.00 so £2.00. As oppose to on the whole amount like you do now = £2.00 + £0.40 (£2.40)
      So what people were doing is, they were putting the price as £3.99 plus £20 Postage so they were still only getting billed on the item price (10% off £3.99 = £0.40) as oppose to £2.00. Ebay realised this and they were obviously losing hundreds of thousands in revenue so that's why they brought in a final value fee.
      If you don't want to do any of the tips I've mentioned, just add ten percent on to the postage price, when customers are spending the amounts they arewith you I'm sure they're not going to notice an extra couple of quid on top.

    • @AntiquesArena

      George I appreciate you trying to help. I been on eBay in one form or another since it was created. I sell between 3 and 5 thousand pounds worth a month. All on buy it now like you. This film wasn’t made to slag eBay off it is a necessary evil. It was made to show the resellers that they should stay on private accounts as long as they can I understand how you are coping with eBay charging for postage etc by adding it to the cost of the item. But that is how you cope with it. That don’t make it right. eBay have the feedback system. Free returns and capped postage charges to protect buyers from over charging on postage. The charge on postage is nothing more than greed and the fact we just incorporated it with our question is scary But truth of the matter is that is all we have done. Learn to absorb it. I didnt make this film to make eBay look bad. All I have done is show the fees and costs and compared business and private rates. If they came off looking bad it’s their own doing but this film was meant to help others understand the true cost of selling on there

      Could you link some the Instagram pages, I haven't seen many people selling on Instagram and want to look in to it.
