  • I decided to take BMW Z4 for a 200 mile long trip to find out if this less than 200hp convertible can make me smile. Unfortunately, the bumpy roads reviled the biggest problem with this car, its suspension!

    Switching from a 987S Boxster to Z4 has given me much more comfort. Driven it last summer for 6.000km in 5 weeks in DE, AT, CH, IT and FR...no regrets of the switch a single moment (except sometimes for the sound maybe)

      Have you switched to 2.0? Did you experience the same issue with the suspension? I bottom it out a few times and other cars had no issue.

      Yes, I switched to the 20i. Did not bottom out but I'm not pushing the Z4 to its limits. We're more enjoying the drive and scenery. See latest video on my channel on Z4 tour.

      @@MDrives did you drive the g29 with adaptive suspension or with the fixed M-suspension? I think you drove fixed... adaptive is really soft in comfort mode and much firmer in sport or more firm in sport+

    12:35 "If it had bigger wheels..."
    That's cute. On larger wheels, the tire circumference and radius is the same and only the width is larger, which tends to result in less digging into potholes and thereby better comfort.

      What I meant was that I bigger wheels with slimmer side wall the car/ suspension would be even more crashy.

      I would love to. I bet the suspension will be completely different.

    Fantastic driving roads round there. Bet you’d have a lot more fun in that car with the roof down in peak summer

      I bet it would feel fantastic with a warm wind in hair. I’m definitely going back there in my M2 when it gets warmer.

    I'm curious about your hard-ride issues. I have had a 20i for almost a year now, and not experienced the issues you are reporting in the video. I wonder if there's actually a problem with your particular car's suspension?

      Do you drive it on very bumpy roads at speed?

      @@MDrives The roads around where I live aren't known for being particularly smooth, and I am not afraid of the accelerator :)
      I would say the ride is not significantly better or worse than any of my previous cars. Including but not limited to: Toyota MR2 (Mk1 and Mk2), Mitsubishi GTO (Mk1 and Mk2), and Smart Brabus Roadster.
      Its possible the ride on all of those is particularly hard (although the MR2 and GTO and known to be fairly soft) but I would say that only time I've managed to make it feel unstable, or like I'm hitting the bump-stops on the suspension is when hitting a speed hump *way* too fast, and that's kind of to be expected. All other times the Z4 seems to handle pretty well down all the windy, and uneven, country roads in the area.
      It did occur to me that you might have the run-flat tires on your model (they are a factory option I believe) and they are known to give a slightly stiffer ride. I'm fairly sure I have the regular PS4's on mine though so the right is a touch softer.

    Not driven this model of z4 but have experience of driving other bmw models, both se and m-sports. I think it is the (worse) combination of hard run flat tyres and the softer suspension. Non-m sport suspension lacks body control and goes through travel on large bumps, whilst run flat tyres crashes through the pot holes. Running M-sport suspension on non run flat tyres is a better combination. This might explain the difference between z4 and supra handling?

      Actually thinking about it now it makes total sense. I think you might be right.

    LOL this review doesn't make any sense... it's a really comfortable roadster. But you were just testing this car in the wrong place...

    • @MDrives
      @MDrives  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong place? I don’t think they come with information “use on smooth roads only”. Where I live, these are the roads you would go on in your roadster to enjoy your car and surroundings.

      @@MDrives I drive daily on some of the worst and roughest roads that Belgium has and that counts... The G29 does quite well and is even comfortabele for a small sports car. The roads are really bad but flat. There is one thing that a short wheel base car can't cope and that's a full of bumps and level differences like the roads you drove and you also have in the champagne in France. Don't test a car like this in this region but take a (real) SUV..

      @@Geneticx77 unfortunately this is British reality. 50% of people in UK spends a lot of time driving on B roads so this is very appropriate for people living in UK. On smoother roads the car behaved really nice.

    This is a silly test for a vehicle designed for paved highways. Given the quality of your road bed, you should have been driving my wife's X5 M60i or my Ford F-250 4x4 with the off-road package. Wrong tool for the task at hand. "Strangely, my 12 pound hammer tends to bend my tacks when i try to drive them."

    • @MDrives
      @MDrives  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I disagree. Other cars, M140i and Clio had no issues. I’ve been there in my M2, also no problems. You can’t say Z4 was designed for perfect roads only. It’s a car as any other.

    Well let the tire pressure down. Thats all you need to do 30psi. For classic feel, lol its prob at 40psi

    • @MDrives
      @MDrives  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t believe that would solve the issue. The suspension didn’t have enough travel or shocks were too soft for the springs.

    what's the car's fault that you have crappy roads ;) change the country and you'll have good roads - it's more like a joke ;)) but really now do you think a Porsche will run better on that road?

    • @MDrives
      @MDrives  ปีที่แล้ว

      It was bad suspension setup. The other guys in m140i and clio didn’t have any issues with bottoming out suspension. Also they could see ho the car was jumping. It felt very unsettled. On better roads it was fine but this was definitely the car’s weakness.
